Random Services Stopping (DNS, DHCP, SMB, etc)

Hello,
I have been trying to wrap my head around this, but we have a single Xserve 10.5.4 and it runs the the majority of the services here in the office, like DNS, DHCP, AFP, SMB, Web, Software Update, Open Directory, and more. The problem I've been having is that over the weekend some of these services just stopped. Not all of them, and in the most recent case SMB, DNS, DHCP, and Software Updates stopped. The server was up the whole weekend, people were in the office saturday working just fine but not on sunday. So where do I even begin to look on this? Some other things you might want to know is that we are dealing with an internal packet loss issue due to cabling, we have been troubleshooting out various bad lines in this office and preparing to have these lines repaired, but to be honest, I can't see how packet loss would cause services to stop on this machine. What do you think?

This is what shows up in the log. I have not seen this in the log before as I have been digging through it to troubleshoot the issues here (I'm new to this company and have been trying to wrap my head around their issues)
I checked into where that MAC address belongs and I have found that it belongs to the server itself, which seems strange that it's reporting that the duplicate IP is being sent from the server that's reporting this error, it shouldn't be reporting itself as a duplicate correct? I feel like I'm reading that wrong, but in looking there are no DNS errors like the ones you mentioned. I turned up the log reporting for DNS to be more verbose, hopefully that will turn something up.
Thank you for responding so quickly.

  • Services stop at restart, router restart or randomly

On 10.7.2 Server DHCP, DNS, Netboot, Web and Open Directory services stop (as seen in Server Admin/Server.app) and are unable to be restarted. If I try to restart them I don't get an error message, but the indicator resolutely remains grey (instead of green).
I can make this problem happen by:
    restarting the server
restarting the switch/router that runs the whole school
    It also happens pseudo randomly.
To fix the problem I need to:
Unplug the main router and our internet ADSL box
    Shut down the Server
    Cuss.
    Plug the main router/switch in
    Plug in the internet box
Wait for a minute or so
    Turn on the server
This is far, far less than ideal. I'm happy to grab error messages from console if that helps - but give me an indication for what service you'd like it from.
Perhaps you can tell me if this is a conflict somewhere - a bug, or something I can fix. It's driving me crazy.
    Cheers,
    Glen.

    Hi Fabrizio,
why do you want to reboot your server every sunday?????
If you reboot your SAP this often, you'll have performance problems every Monday. All
of your SAP internal Buffers must be filled again after an reboot. If your DB is on the
same Host, also your DB Buffer is empty.
If this is an productive System, i highly recommend you that you not reboot your SAP System this often....
(By side, thats the difference between an *nix and an Windows System.).
What is the reason for doing that?

  • Access Connections main service stops randomly

    Hi all,
I have a T60 at work with the latest version of Access Connections.  Over the last few weeks, my Access Connections will randomly show that it disconnects in my system tray.  However, I am still connected to my company's network.  Our tech group came out and said that they are seeing instances of the Access Connection Main service just stopping randomly.  When I go into Services, I can verify that it has stopped.  This happens anywhere from 20-60 mins after logging onto our network.  It also only happens when I am docked to my docking station, not when I am wireless.  If I have a tech remote into my machine and restart the service, it starts up just fine again.
Any thoughts as to what might be causing the service to stop like this?  It doesn't present a problem if I stay docked...but if I undock and try to go wireless, it doesn't do the auto switching because it's frozen...so I always have to reboot.

    Hi,
    in this situation make following:
    - go to services and open Properties of both AC Services and in the Recovery tab set all 3 options to "Restart the Service"
    - In case this should not change the situation, then go to "Log On" tab and select "This account" and insert your name and password.
In this situation would be also good to check the Event log if there is any notice, why the Service stopped working.
    Any info is appreciated.
    Cheers

  • Imap service stopping at random

    Hi,
We're running NSMS 4.15 on WinNTAS v4 sp6a. Every once in a while the imap service will exit. Nothing in the NT event logs or the NS IMAP logs. I set the logging mode to debug and there doesn't appear to be any more information in the log than before. The problem seems to not be related to load as it has happened at various times of the day (and night). Support has told us to reconstruct the mail folders which I did on Sunday with imap, pop, smtp, and http all off. Only store was running. On Tuesday the service stopped in the middle of the morning.
    Any ideas out there?
    tia, al

    Hi!
I hade the same problem with IMAP. It seems that some mailbox has problem. One message in inbox or other folders could be case of problem.
1- If you look at the log files you can find account, which has problem. Normally, account before the message ?Messaging Server IMAP4 4.15 ? starting up? in the log file.
2- Log on with this account and find out the mail folder (inbox, sent box or other) that makes IMAP goes down. If inbox has problem the server goes down when you log on or synchronize the inbox.
3- Find out which message has problem. You may create a new folder and move the messages there to find out the problem message. Delete the problem message and run reconstruct for folder.

  • Communication between the DNS/DHCP Manager and OES Server

No communication between the DNS/DHCP Manager Console and OES server (status, start, stop)
The screenshot shows the tab "DHCP (OES Linux)" in the DNS / DHCP Manager console
in the bottom of the image it shows the state of the DHCP servers.
    allDHCP.JPG
The dhcp service is started on all these servers
You can see that the status is known only for four servers.
The button "start/stop DHCP service" works fine on this servers and
the dhcp service can be canceled and also restarted
But the status of the "dhcp service" is not recognized for all the other DHCP servers
and so we can not start or stop dhcp service on these servers.
All servers were installed at different times (last three years) with OES11 and
are upgraded to OES11SP2 with all patches.
The server keto (DHCP_keto) is a new installation OES11SP2 few days ago.
All OES servers were set up identically from me. LDAP, LUM, DMS, DHCP works fine.
Which service on the OES server is responsible for
communication (status indicator) between the DNS/DHCP Manager and the OES serve?
How the status query is performed by the DNS/DHCP Manager?
How can I test the communication to the server on the client (console)?
Which configurationfiles I should be compare on the server?
    Thanks in advance

  • DNS/DHCP app no longer sees DNS/DHCP server.

When I moved the majority of my Netware 6 servers to OES-NW last year, I started using iManager to handle admin duties for DNS and DHCP.
With a planned move to OES-L coming up, I tried accessing both services using the DNS/DHCP java console.
While I am able to log into that console, I am unable to see my DNS/DHCP server or any of the expected components for either service (DHCP pools, zone records, etc...).
I have tried both the console that is installable from the server and the newer LDAP-based version.
I have tried both 32 and 64-bit versions on XP and Windows 7, respectively.
Since I want to move those services to OES/Linux and the java console is the only mechanism that can administrate the services on that platform, I am perplexed.
My needs are simple, and I could easily move those duties to a SUSE server or even a Windows server, but that is not my preference.
Any ideas on where to begin troubleshooting are welcome.

You have more than one DNS-DHCP locator object in your tree, and the
console is picking up a/the empty one. Find the proper object (look at
the other tab in consoleone or imanager to see if it's connected with
servers zones and the like), and delete the superflouos ones.
This is an *extremely* common problem when OES gets introduced into a
tree, as it by default creates new locator objects in the server
container, if it's not configured otherwise.

  • Viewing Dynamic Leases Under The DNS/DHCP Management Console

My dhcp-server is on oes2 sp3 / sles 10 sp3 and i am trying to set it up for viewing dynamic leases in the DNS/DHCP Management Console.
I am following TID 7006450 and right away i get stuck.
    From the TID
    1. Launch the DNS/DHCP management console and login to the server
    2. Click on the 'DHCP (OES Linux) tab toward the top of the console
    3. Find the DHCP Server object at the bottom of the console and select it
    4. Toward the top-right hand side of the console select the GENERAL tab and find the section called DHCP SERVER
---- There is no section called DHCP SERVER only Services
    5. Click the ADD button and enter the IP address of the DHCP server
NOTE: If doing this step on OES 2 SP 2 the buttons may be greyed out. This is due to the schema not being extended. This option is officially supported on OES 2 SP 3
---- There is no ADD button
    6. Click on the SAVE button toward the top, left-hand side of the console (looks like a floppy disk)
---- There is no SAVE button

    Hi Stevo,
Is this on the server where DNS/novell-named cuts off every so often? And ifso, did you try adding the "-n 1" switch as per previous thread?

  • Single server as Soft AP, DC, DNS, DHCP for a small office

The server is running 2012 R2 Foundation with a wired network for internet (Comcast). It has a WiFi adapter so it can host a wireless network (as a Soft AP). The WiFi host has a static IP 1.1.1.1.
On the server I have setup AD, DNS, and DHCP services (all bind to that static IP).
All clients need to connect server and internet via WiFi, and join the domain for work.
But it looks like the DHCP/DNS services don't like the virtual adapter - although all clients can connect, they cannot get their IP.
Without AD/DNS/DHCP I can share internet connection with ICS perfectly, so I think the hosted WiFi network is setup correctly.
I tried to remove the DHCP service, and use ICS to assign IP - it works, but clients cannot see the DNS server and thus cannot join AD.
What am I missing? Thanks for your help!

It is never a good idea to run a DC with two NICS. It causes all sorts of problems. (The only exception was SBS server which was designed as a one-box solution). Also, a domain will not run behind ICS. If you are running a domain, the domain clients
must use the local DNS (on the DC) for DNS, not the DNS relay system of ICS. RRAS/NAT will work because you can configure it so that it does not run its own DHCP function. ICS is not configurable.
Even if you overcome that problem, you still have the multihomed DC problem. It really isn't worth the effort to save a few bucks.

  • E1200 stops serving DHCP all of a Sudden (affects both wireless and wired)

     Greetings All,
I have a 2 year E1200 router that has given me very good service uptil now. Now, it appears to suddenly stop serving DHCP at least once daily. This results in a situation where all my devices (3 over wifi, 2 directly wired) suddenly all cannot talk over the local LAN or reach the Internet (WAN).
This issue started about a week ago when the build I live in had an issue with its network - they won't give a full explanation of what the exact issue was but somehow some media gateways were requesting MAC addresses (ARP?) from every single device in the building constantly. Since then, my E1200 gets into a funk daily, typically at night when it is idle, though I have seen it get into this condition during the day when I am actively connected to a VPN at work.
My network consists of 3-4 wireless devices, 2 wired devices connecting to the E1200 (wpa2-psk) and the E1200 is connected to a Digital-to-Analog GW that converts fiber input to 100Mb Ethernet. I have the latest firmware on it.
I realize this is very scant information to begin a hypothesis so any suggestions on whether this is a know problem and if so, how to rectify it? If it is not known, I'm all ears on how to debug it.
So far, my work around has been to reboot the E1200 and that clears up the issue but clearly that is not a good long term solution.
    Thanks,
    H

    Hi,
If you have time, you can try to perform a hardware reset on your E1200 then reconfigure it back manually. Since you are running on the latest firmware, there's no need to reflash that. You might still have the same issue if there's really a problem from your gateway.
If everyone needs to believe in something, I believe I'll have another beer..

  • Data services stop working after updating to new OS version for Q10

I am from Qatar, after i updated my device ( Q10 SNQ100-3 ) to new OS ( 10.2.1.537 ), the mobile data services stopped working, but it works everytime I connect to wifi. This is the same with Z10. Please need help.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
With a strong carrier network signal (e.g., not merely WiFi), I suggest the following steps, in order, even if they seem redundant to what you have already tried (step 1 should result in a message coming to your BB...please wait for that before proceeding to the next step):
    1) Register HRT
KB00510 How to register a BlackBerry smartphone with the wireless network
Please wait for one "registration" message to arrive
    2) Reboot
Pre-BB10 Devices ONLY. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes.
BB10 Devices. Hold the top button down until the counter reaches zero. Wait for the device to be fully shut down (e.g., nothing at all displayed on the screen, no LED lights, etc.). Hold the top button until the red LED is lit. Wait through the full boot-up process. IF this fails, you can attempt the battery-pull method above, but it is normally NOT recommended unless nothing else works.
See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
Hopefully that will get things going again for you! If not, then you should contact your mobile service provider for formal support.

'THE UBSLAN_LDR SERVICE ON LOCAL COMPUTER STARTED AND THEN STOPPED.SOME SERVICES STOP AUTOMATICALLY IF THEY ARE NOT IN USE BY OTHER SERVICES OR PROGRAMS'
What can cause this and solution please

    Hi kuados  ,
    Thanks for posting here.
After reading your posting I understand that when you establish USBLAN_LDR service on windows server 2008, system prompt an error message.
According the information what you provided right now, it’s hard to determine what cause this issue, you may like to post more information about your environment
(Event log ,Other  System prompting etc… ).
Please check if it worked with assign a  Local System account instead of Local Service account to run this service.
    Open service MMC snap-in.
Right UBSLAN_LDR service , and click “properties”.
Click “Log on” tab , and assign a local account for running this services.
Seems this issue related to a third party software, I suggest to consult software vendor for future troubleshooting.
Please understand that I don't mean to bounce you between different solution provider as I am fully aware how time consuming this can be. However, they really are
in a better position to be able to assist you with this issue as they may have experienced similar issues.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • CFMX windows services stopping

    Hi,
Has anyone else run into the situation where the CFMX 7
    ColdFusion services are stopping randomly?
    Set-up - Server 2000, CFMX 7, IIS 5
On checking the windows services i'm finding that the
services are failing which require a restart, this holds up for a
while then the services stops again. On restarting i'm then
sometimes receiving the 'service specific error 2', strangely
enough not all the time though, i did set the services to auto
restart on failure, this however does not seem to start the stopped
service, is there a set order they should be starting in? If there
is a service dependency can be set, any ideas?
This has also been coupled with a license key error in the
logs saying the server may be out of compliance, we have checked
all our license keys they are all valid, bit stumped on that one.
Any ideas & help greatly appreciated...

That's a fairly generic error message - have you dug through
the JRun (runtime) logs, and/or the system event logs?
