Random shutdown issues, battery, and overheating.

Hi,
About two weeks ago, I've experienced random shutdowns on my MacBook Pro (Bought it on October).
I am not sure if all this problem was about battery issues. First I've charged it for the first time and only lasted 1 hour. then I recalibrated it and now it last 2 hours and a bit more.
Now, apart from having battery issue, I've experienced random shutdowns from my laptop. I had installed all the available updates for my laptop.
Reading all the posted topics about heat, shutdowns and batteries, maybe my problem is just overheating.
So I've installed the fan control, adjusted the speed to 3500 rpm and worked fine.
But one thing came to my mind:
Is it safe for the fans to actually force the speed all time? if so, their cycle life could be shorter?.
On either case, what if the MBP actually has a defective factory error and if I still be using it, it could completely "melt from the inside"?
Does the battery itself has something to do with the overheating itself?
Maybe I should call for a laptop replacement as well.
Any suggestions?

Your Mac will very likely last as long as you own it or otherwise choose to upgrade. The heat issues posted here are not entirely valid. With that said, you might want to verify that your battery isn’t on the recall list by viewing the link provided below.
Excerpt:
"The affected batteries have model number A1175 and a 12-digit serial number that ends with U7SA, U7SB or U7SC. To view the model and serial numbers located on the bottom of the battery, you must remove the battery from the computer. The battery serial number is located above the barcode. See photos below. Only batteries within the noted serial number ranges need to be exchanged."

  • Random shutdowns: my experience, and a suggestion

I own a BlackBook whose random shutdowns began a couple of weeks ago.
During my first trip to my local Genius Bar, the guy behind the counter reset the PMU and PRAM, and was unable to reproduce the problem, and sent me on my way.
    The random shutdowns continued.
During my second trip to the Genius Bar, the guy was able to boot the machine from another drive, and was able to reproduce the problem. The machine was sent to the repair center for servicing. I got it back a few days later.
Random shutdowns have still occurred, but I find that if I reset the PRAM as the machine is booting, and wait for at least three startup chimes before letting go of the key combination (control-option-P-R), the machine seems to stabilize and not shut down on its own, at least so far.
Before repair, the machine was also exhibiting the "vertical colored lines at startup" problem. Before that, it needed a replacement power adapter and a replacement battery (the battery was refusing to take a charge or even be recognized by the computer).
Various theories for the cause or causes of the problem with random shutdowns have been suggested -- along with a number of magic-bullet solutions from different sources. My guess is that even Apple isn't sure what's causing the issue, and there's certainly no foolproof solution that the user can apply. We'll just have to wait and see what comes of the investigations.
Despite these problems, I still love the BlackBook and think it's perhaps the most beautifully designed computer ever made. I assume that once these growing pains subside, Apple will have a total winner on its hands.
    MacBook (black) 13"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I have a whitebook bought in June, shutdowns started about 6 weeks after I got it. Did the whole tech support line thing several times resetting various things etc. No change. Sent it in for repair with a strong encouragement that it would only take 48 hours. It is now 10 days later and repair is still on hold. Sent in several "why is this dragging on" and got nice automatic reponse saying they would respond in a day or two. No real responses yet. Called today the helpful tech said they would check and see what was holding things up and let me know when I called back in 48 hours. Assured me I would not be without my Macbook more than a week longer. Have missed work and have a presentation on Friday that I will have to do without it. Had I known it would take this long I would have taken my chance that it would not shut down mid stream in the presentation. I am very disapointed with Apple at this point. Have been a long time user and own stock etc. This is the worse customer service I have gotten on a computer problem, personal or business. Apple needs to realize they have a batch of lemons on their hands and bite the bullet and replace them. I am not encouraged to hear others are getting their books back repaired only to find the problem on going.

  • Random shutdown issues

    Hi,
I apologize if this has been answered in other threads, but I'm going to ask anyways.
I've been having random shutdown problems (both kernal panics and "won't wake up from sleep" issues) since I got my MacBook in November 2006, but they've been happening more frequently recently and I'm worried I'll lose information (especially as I'm just starting an online university course).
What are my options? I still have the one year warranty going? Can I get it repaired/replaced? Who should I talk to or email?
Thanks so much for your help, it is much appreciated. If there is any other info you might need just let me know and I'll post it.
    Carl
ps yes I have installed the firmware update that was supposed to correct this issue.

I've been having random shutdown problems (both kernal panics and "won't wake up from sleep" issues...
These are not related to RSD.
There are lots of things to try depending on what exactly is happening and what you're doing at the time these things occur - running Disc Utility from the Install DVD, creating a new user, running maint. tasks, SMC or Pram resets.
You're book has a standard 1 year warranty and you can get it repaired by bringing it in to your local Apple shop - if it's a fault of the Macbook and NOT anything user related (installed problem apps, widgets, drivers etc.) then you won't be charged for any service work.
Yes, posting specific information will always help in nailing down what a potential problem could be.

  • Relationship between battery and overheating problems?

I have several questions related to my battery.
    1) Looking at the sales page, one of the reviews says apple will replace the battery for free. I assume this reviewer is still under warrantee (which I am not, unfortunately). If there's any truth to this statement (e.g. for a while apple was replacing failed hard drives on 13" macbooks purchased around the time I bought mine. i found this out after my 3rd hard drive failure in 18 months) I would really really like to know.
    2) My battery is warped. One topic here about a warped battery says to replace it immediately, but I asked the last time I was at a genius bar (for the 2nd hard drive replacement) and they said a warped battery was no problem. I asked explicitly.
    3) HOWEVER, my laptop has a heating issue. I have been under the impression that this is standard for macbooks, so I didn't think much about it before my first hard drive failure. Now, I watch the temperature closely and have a program that lets me increase the fan speed, but sometimes the temperature can shoot up unexpectedly. Normally, i try to keep the temp ~60C, which is still like twice the recommended temperature. I'm afraid the heating problem precipitates the hard drive failure. On a whim, I took out my battery today and immediately the computer ran more stably around 60C temperature. If I put the battery back in, the temperature shoots right up again (say, if I'm watching a video). What is the relationship here? Is it a known issue? Is there any way to get them to replace the battery without me having to shell out $120?
For reference, here's the current battery info:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 4526
    Fully charged: Yes
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 4559
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 179
    Condition: Good
    P. S. I almost always run the laptop of the adapter rather than the battery -- I basically only use the battery to work when I'm traveling (several times a year) or in order to transport the laptop without turning it off (pretty much daily). I assume this is why the condition is good. Also, I've never calibrated it. Huh, also this is an interesting part of a reply from someone else's thread: "you should know that Applecare doesn't cover the battery, it is specifically excluded unless it's defective." I actually was sold the extended applecare on the premise that it only cost a little more than a new battery and I probably would need a new battery before the warrantee expired. Funny.

One could probably make the argument that the fact that the battery is bulging while system profiler says that it is still good is an indication that the battery is defective. Be polite but insistent, especially since your computer is still under warranty.

  • Since downloading Yosemite, I have had performance, battery, and overheating issues. Help?

    Hello,
I've been quite unfortunate with my laptop (Macbook Pro Early 2011) ever since downloading the Yosemite OS. It has been plagued with extremely slow speeds when running basically anything, the fan runs constantly, and the battery drains at a rate of 1% every minute it seems. I can typically only get an hour or 2 out of my MBP without having to run and find an outlet.
The performance is extremely slow when opening apps, but not so bad once they are open and running. However, switching apps (e.g. from Chrome to iTunes) causes a long lag and leaves me unproductive. Some apps don't even open. It takes about 5 minutes to open one app, and about 15 minutes on average to use my computer once again after restarting.
I've looked at various other discussions where people had problems, but each situation seemed unique with no solution working for everyone. I used Etrecheck to analyze my computer, but not knowing a lot about computers, I didn't find a solution. Below you will find the data. Any insight or solutions would help so much! I hate always having to be plugged in and burning my legs when my laptop is on my lap.

  • Iphone 5 random shutdown when battery is not low?

Recently My iphone5 keeps shutting down itself randomly when it still has enough battery. It could happen when battery is 50%, or 60%. The lower battery, more frequently does shutting down happen. It is the latest ios7 version. And I tried to enter DFU mode and restored my iphone. But the problem is still unsolved. I want to know if it is a hardware problem, or something wrong with iOS system. And what further steps I should take. I don't think restoring it again in DFU mode would help.

There are other conditions that cause the iPhone to shut down - not only a low battery.
    Examples:
Operating the iPhone in a temperature that is too hot.
Operating the iPhone in a temperature that is too cold.
Storing the iPhone in a temperature that is too hot.
Storing the iPhone in a temperature that is too cold.

  • Possible Fix for the Random Shutdown Issue

One of the readers at MacFixit was able too find a solution to his RSD Macbook. He discovered when he removed the top case (they keyboard) off his machine, the Macbook worked fine. After further investigation, he found out that the top case and the heat sync seem to touch each other while the machine is closed (generating more heat). To fix the RSD he put kapton tape on the top case (to separate the heat sync and the top case) and on the track pad cable. Not only did it fix the RSD problem, another plus it causes the computer to run cooler.
So it appears what Apple needs to do is, either put Kapton tape on the top case, or move some the thermal grease from the processor too the top case. Another easy fix might be just to send out new top cases (since only a significant minority are effected by this problem, their might just be a set of bad cases out their).
Before you decide to open up your machine and put on Kapton tape on your machine, keep this in mind, it will void your warranty.

    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Holding down the power button until it beeps is still the only way that I can get my machine to boot up fully and become operational. I was starting to think that I was crazy after reading above that all it did was to remind me that my finger was still on the power button. I've had my husband and my son watch this process just to convince myself I wasn't crazy.
I've been deleting software, going through log files, making other changes to make sure that they weren't interfering with the machine working. I shut the machine off this morning to go do something else. When I turned it on again I forgot to hold the power button until I heard the beep. After I logged in, I realized that I hadn't done that and that the machine had actually gone through the complete boot cycle and login. I thought "wow, maybe I fixed it. Maybe it was something software related." I waited for a few minutes to make sure that everything that it had to do in its start up was finished before I did anything thinking "well maybe its just that I try to do too many things too quickly, and it is operator error and my fault I've been having this problem". Then I went to open Safari and "blink" the machine went dead.
Then I put my finger on the power button until it beeped to start it up a second time. I've been working on it for six hours now. It's gone to sleep while I've been on the phone, I've woken it up with a short press of the power button and logged in a few times today.....not one single problem in 6 hours.
It's crazy. I don't know what holding the power button for that long does but it must be resetting or otherwise doing something that causes it to override whatever problem was causing it to just shut down by itself. I love everything else about this MacBook. I don't want to have someone start taking it apart and putting it back together again. If the fix is just remembering to "hold power until it beeps" I"ll live with it.

  • 1st generation MacBook, battery and Leopard issues; looking for help please

I have a 1st generation MacBook that started having battery problems immediately after installing Leopard. it was the same issue many others have complained about; battery life shortened and shutting down while on battery power with no warning. I have never had that problem while using Tiger. I experienced this with both 10.5.0 and the stand alone upgrade of 10.5.1 using an erase and install method.
(BTW, as a side note: I'm religious about calibrating my battery every month and use a program called "CoconutBattery" to document the results. Prior to Leopard, the battery measured 97-99% capacity. Three days after Leopard was installed it was time for another check, the result was 74% capacity.)
I had a clone backup of Tiger and immediately restored my MacBook, but the problem followed Tiger. I have Applecare and called support. Both myself and the tech found it rather hard to believe that the battery just suddenly failed coincidentally after the Leopard install. We went through the regular things; SMC reset, firmware checks, diagnostics, repair permissions, etc.
We believe it has to do with the Battery Updater package. I had gone between both versions of 1.2 and 1.3, but the problem remained with both Tiger and Leopard. The tech decided to send me a new battery (it's on the way) and I wish to try installing Leopard again. As long as I have my cloned Tiger image, all I have to lose is my time, but hopefully, not another battery! I would honestly like to get Leopard running on this machine.
But... here's my question. In reading through these discussions in both the Leopard and MacBook forum, there doesn't seem to be any consensus of which BatteryUpdater package to use. The Apple tech honestly told me he didn't know. Also, if the BU package "writes" to the battery (which it states it does), can it be downgraded once v1.3 has been installed? I mean, should I leave the battery out, install Leopard, then manually update BU to v1.2 before installing the battery (if possible)? I do plan on testing the new battery with my Tiger install, just to verify it is working as it was before.
There are a lot of people here claiming to be knowledgeable about Leopard, never had any problems with a variety of machines, etc, etc, so I would appreciate your input. Please don't speculate, but if you're using a version of BU that works with Leopard and your 1st Gen MacBook, I would appreciate you telling me about it. I have tried to document and methodically relate everything I've done so far, but if you need additional information, just let me know.
I noticed Leopard had installed BU v1.3 when I checked it, so it must use that as default, since I noticed Tiger had v1.2.
OR, am I way off base on this? Can anyone think of another reason I may have had this problem? Am I barking up the wrong tree by concentrating on the BatteryUpdater package? Is it possible all these batteries are failing under a Leopard install maybe due to some unknown reason?
Any knowledgeable advice or suggestions are welcome, thanks!

Well, Ding Dang y'all... it appears the battery was the culprit. I received my replacement battery from Apple and followed the same steps and everything seems to be working fine.
It sure was strange that the battery started this problem immediately after Leopard was installed... I don't know what to say about that, unless BatteryUpdater v1.3 started the chain of events.
In case it helps someone else, here's exactly what I did (rebooted through each step):
    - Backed up data; unauthorized computer from iTunes
    - Erase and install from the Leopard disc, while keeping the old battery in
    - Installed Leopard, did software updates except for delta 10.5.1 update
    - Applied combo update of 10.5.1 from separately downloaded file
    - Found BatteryUpdater Bundle (BU) of v1.3, moved to trash, rebooted
    - Ran software updates, BU v1.2 was found and installed
    - Then, swapped out battery to new battery
    - Tested unit, seems to be okay now, no shutdown issues, battery runtime seems normal
Thanks to all that had advice and suggestions. It was enough to get me to try it again. Now, I have two more machines to upgrade, since these are production machines, I'll probably wait awhile. But, having this is a real treat.
    Have a great holiday everyone!

  • Whats next if all else fails with random shutdowns

Hi, having random shutdown on battery power on my 'macbook intel 1.83 core duo' no warning of low battery etc always ample battery power available.
Have installed battery update 1.2 twice
Have reset the SMC twice to no avail
Next stop apple repair centre, but what's the most likely outcome has anyone had this issue resolved by repair, and if so, what was the cause.

I am in the same situation, save that I have not yet tried re-setting the SMC. My MacBook is still under guarantee, but the local Apple shop can suggest nothing more creative than that l leave the notebook with them for a week plus. That is impossible for me -- any more than half a day, and I need to have a stand-by replacement into which I can slot my hard drive, but that is most certainly not on offer. It is the more irritating in that it is now apparent to me that Random Shutdown Syndrome been the subject of complaints literally for years, and comes as no surprise to Apple. I am beginning to wonder whether the AppleCare Protection-Plan was worth what I paid for it.

  • MacBook 3x went to service center, still random shutdown, what to do next?

Hi! Mine is week 17, and mainboard already replaced for 3 times. The last one they replaced the battery also.
There is no Apple Center in here, I deliver it to the local authorized Apple service.
I just got my 3rd replacement yesterday, and I noticed from the first place that it got blank gray screen on startup & can't sleep using the Energy Saver. But I waited long enough for the repairement, so I decided to take it home anyway. At home, I did the commandopt+pr and reinstall it back to 10.4.6 using the equiped cd. But still it can't sleep using Energy Saver..
But the blank gray screen problem is gone.
Today I calibrate (since they replaced the battery with brand new one), after the process done (5 hours sleep, zero battery), I plugged the magsafe and I heard looping click sound, and it went random shutdown again!
And it goes shutdown on: yes dev null
I just do the commandopt+pr, and the yes dev null havn't invoked the shutdown. But from my previous shutdown experiences, it will go crazy random shutdown in about 3 days ahead from now.
So what to do next? going to the authorized service again?
    I'm sick and tired now.
Also the outer body case is suffers little scratches, and it's getting mucher and mucher everytime I got it back from repairement.
Oh dear God do help me! All I want is for my money back, at least a new replacement for my MacBook.
And they said Apple wouldn't allow it.

Since you're not actually turning it in to Apple for repair, I wonder if the repair shop that's doing the work knows what they're doing. Since you've had the logic board replaced three times, that's pobably not the solution. I had the random shutdowns and verticle lines on the display, and Apple replaced my heatsink and then erased the HD and re-installed to factory settings, 10.4.6. I then migrated my data from my backup HD, updated OS to 10.4.7, and installed the SMC firmware update. No problems since then.
Many other users have had their logic board replaced more than once only to continue having the problems. Some have had logic board replaced once and then no longer have problems. Others have had other parts replaced, such as in my case and have had no problems.
Apparently each MacBook has to be diagnosed individually to find the problem.

  • Randomly turns itself off, and won't restart.

OK, I know the shutdown issue can be fixed with a firmware update, but I think I might have another issue from what I have heard described in these posts.
I have had my macbook since July, so it's 5 months old and I’ve been seeing the following issues for the last 2-3 months.
I have been seeing a lot of random shutdowns (maybe every three times I sit down to use my macbook) with no error messages, fully charged with the AC adaptor plugged in. After it shuts down and I try to turn it on, it will stay on from anywhere from 10 seconds to less than one second before turning itself back off. Is this failure to power back up a different issue from the random shutdowns? They seem to correspond, because I have never had trouble powering up when properly shutdown and dormant.
I found a workaround to get booted when it is failing to restart by simply holding the power button for 5-10 seconds until the macbook beeps loudly, then I let go of the power button and it powers up ok, and I don’t see the random shutdown issue for a while.
I have not yet applied the firmware update; will this fix both of my issues? I'm worried that if the random shutdowns stop, that there might still be a hardware issue (not powering up) on my macbook that won't surface until I am out of warranty.
I also heard that a friend of a friend had this same problem and was given a replacement macbook, which makes me think I have a more severe problem.
    Any ideas?

Well... the issue is they may not have been seated correctly to start with... not so much that they would have worked loose. Actually, if you've ever tried to put RAM into a MacBook, you'll see that they're certainly not loose. Your main problem certainly seems like the random shutdown issue. Your start up issue is related to the same thing. Your MacBook gets a funky signal from a temperature sensor and shuts down. It doesn't want to come back on right away because it thinks the temperature issue has not been resolved. When you hold the power button in and get the beep, you are locking your MacBook at a slower speed which has seemed to work for some people temporarily. The firmware update should resolve your problem.
NOTE: If you know your machine will run for a few minutes under certain circumstances, make sure it's under those circumstances that you update the firmware. You don't want to have a random shutdown during a firmware update.

  • Mega 180. Randomly shutdown.

Anyone ever have this issue?  The meda 180 just randomly shutdown.  The light stayed on for 'PC', and the cpu fans were spinning, but the cdrom and hdd powered down, as well as there was no video.  Nothing was running other than winXP, and it wasn't any hotter than normal.  upon trying to boot it back up, it would sit and do nothing.  i reset the cmos, and it booted again, but... odd.

Also, while we're on the subject, the system takes forever and a year to detect ide drives.  jumpers are right, and they are new units that work fine in different machines.
--> fix: me and a friend were talking.  we decide the only thing I hadn't tried was changing out the jumpers themselves.  to our humor, and my delight, switching the jumpers out for some newer ones laying around (same type of jumper, mind you) and the issue with ide drives taking forever to detect is fixed.  however, I am still at a loss for the random shutdown..

oi, and when I have cdrom before hdd-0 in the boot priority, it will not boot unless there is a cd in the drive.  boot other device is enabled... shouldn't it be cycling to the second boot device when the cd fails..?  quit an annoyance.

  • Random Shutdown/Thermal Runaway

Unfortunately, the AppleCare Plan on my iMac G5 (iSight) expired a month ago. Or, to be a little more clear on the irony, a month before I started getting a repeat of a random shutdown issue that I had the machine in for about a year ago. These typically happen when my son is playing WoW or we are watching YouTube vids, movie previews, etc. or just plain using a lot of processing power.

Have tried the standard resets of PRAM and SMU, permission repair, etc. which, though fun, have not done anything to solve the problem.
Any thoughts, suggestions as to what I can do or what can be done now that I am outside the AppleCare Plan would be very appreciated. Other than spend lots of money on a repair of course!

Your power supply is failing, take it in and have it replaced, your symptoms are classic and point to thermal overload caused by the power supply failing.
You might try calling Apple Customer Relations at 800-767-2775 and see if you can talk them into paying for the repair. Be polite but firm and ask to be escalated to the next level.

  • Random Shutdown (theory | wild guess) - thermistor

Just sent my MacBook into service for the second time because of Random Shutdown. First time I got a new logic board. This next time, before I took it into the Genius Bar, I called up AppleCare to see if there was any known resolution on the Random Shutdown issue. Got directed to a Product Specialist who said that she would send a note to Engineering. I thought ... right. But apparently Engineering got back to her, she made some notes in my case report. Of course, no one at AppleCare would tell me what was in the notes. ???
So, this morning, the Genius tells me that the notes indicated that the thermistor cables may have been damaged when the logic board was replaced. Hadn't heard that before, so, thought I'd post.
Could Random Shutdown be caused by bad "thermistor cables"? Seems as likely as anything else; perhaps the manufacturing process tended to damage some as they were made. And during repair, they were also damaged. Who knows. Maybe Engineering took a wild guess. Maybe there's no such thing as "thermistor cables".
I'll post more when I get the box back; supposedly since this is a re-repair, it gets a higher priority. But they also couldn't repair it in store, no thermistor cables (or whatever). So it's off to Tennessee.

Please tell me you were repairing 8-track equipment
MORE than just a few years back...
Ya, I guess the 8-tracks were back in the 70s. Boy how time flies...eh? A good friend of mine used to go to K-Mart every week and buy new 8-track tapes. It was an addiction. He had a couple of suitcases in his trunk full of them.
    Any random
    shutdown issues in those?
I replaced a LOT of thermistors in television sets. When they went bad, the degaussing circuit stopped working and the CRT's color purity would get all screwed up. I could tell the thermistor was bad when I walked in the door and looked at the screen.
I had a PC that eventually had a problem reading disks (3.5", if you >remember those). Swapped it out, and when I did, realized their were a >bunch of coins in it. Gave the boys a little lesson that day to NOT put things >in slots on machines unless we said it was ok.
Oh yes. Coins were VERY popular.
