Random shutdown MacBook Pro
I can't find this specific problem anywhere apart from on postings that are a couple of years old.
I have a 2 year-old Macbook Pro that has never given me a moment's worry. Except on the 1 January when it refused to start up. It would get to the grey screen and then just die. On the 2nd January I got as far as writing two emails and then it just died -- no warning, nothing.
I took it to an Apple store and they zapped the PRAM and checked that there was nothing wrong with the hard drive, etc. I have now been using it for a couple of days and it seems to be ok but I've completely lost faith in it. I am now backing up with TimeMachine and syncing to MobileMe, but does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this problem? Could there be a loose connection in the hardware?
I have the same issue. It started shutting down suddenly without making any warning when it is on battery no matter what battery level it was.
I have tried command-option-p-r and reset smc and other ways. It still does the same thing. I cannot get it to run on battery properly.
Any ideas?

since installing os x mavericks can't shutdown macbook pro(mid 2012) is there a fix?
I did the SMC reset and that did shut down the computer (did not notice if the power adaptor lite blinked) when pushed power button (after waiting approx. 30sec.) to see if computer would display same message -- it did! Here is report:

Windows vista 64bit shutdown macbook pro
Hi,
I a having trouble getting my macbook pro (3,1) to poweroff after a sccessful shutdown while using vista 64bit. The same happens when I do a reboot. The system appears to successfully powerdown ready for the actual 'reboot' or 'poweroff' but it doesnt do either, and I am left with a black screen indefinately, and I need to manually hold down the power button to turn the thing off. Any ideas whats wrong? I didnt have this problem with windows xp.Check your disk drive (chkdsk). If it wasn't having problems before, it might now, and you may need to use a restore point
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/127417-system-restore-points-stop-xp-dual-boot -delete.html
boot from DVD and use system restore, or follow tips for troubleshooting Vista.
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/search.aspx?=&qu=Vista+Recovery
System File Check is also useful.

Mac OS X Lion kernel panic on shutdown (MacBook Pro 5,3)
So lately I have been getting kernel panic on shutdown, running Lion 10.7.3 on my Mid-2009 Macbook Pro (Intel C2D, nVidia 9400M & 9600M GT) Reading the log it seems that it has something to do with the graphics card. prior to this, I did try to switch my graphics card from the 9400M to the 9600M but it never worked as after I logged out (after choosing higher performance), the system preferences doesnt remember the option and after I shutdown/restart, it went well to the Logon Screen but after I log on the Mac started to perform VERY slowly and hangs VERY often so I did a PRAM reset after so that I could use it again, on the 9400M.
The log can be seen here - http://pastebin.com/mjb9s6f5
If anyone can help please do so as I really wanna use the 9600M GT card for my primary/day-to-day use rather than the 9400M.Most likely culprits are these. Disable them and see if that fixes the problem:

Random crashes Macbook Pro Retina 15"
Hello all,
I have the: Macbook Pro Retina 15" Late 2013 model, with the 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD, running on: OS X 10.9.3 (13D65).
Now i have random crashes when i'm using my laptop, sometimes with only Safari open sometimes when i'm gaming. Also i have sometimes that when i resume my macbook from "hibernate/sleep" whatever you want to call it that my top bar (where the Apple logo is displayed) is black, this won't go away untill i completly restart my macbook. The strange thing is, it is very hard to reproduce the problem.
Does anyone out here have the same problem or know some fixes?
The following things i already tried:
- Resetting SMC
- Running AHT (Apple Hardware Check) -> shows everything is fine
- Repairing and checking disk permisions.I don't know if it are "kernel panics" best way to log it is to click "report to apple" when it occurs? Is it allowed to zip all the files in the "/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports " path, upload them and post link here, that way you can check out wich file you need to see?
I can only find 1 .panic file i think this is because i always click "cancel" instead of "report to apple"
Here are the contents of the .panic file i found:

Random Shutdown MacBook - accept replacement or moneyback?
After 4 months of attempted and failed repairs on my young brother's MacBook, Apple has finally accepted defeat and agreed to replace his MacBook or give him his money back.
They assure us that the current crop of MacBook's (post-October) do not suffer from the random shutdown problem - but I cannot trust their word given how many times they have falsely assured us the problem had been fixed over the last few months.
My question to the Apple community is simple - do the recent crop of MacBooks still suffer from the Random Shutdown problem? Should my brother just get his money back and shop elsewhere? This isn't much of a reply to the topic. I am new to Macs. My wife and I shelled out what is a good deal of money to us on two of the new mac books. We brought them with us to Thailand. Her computer has the random shut down thing. She loses work all the time. Safe to say she is not happy with my decision to make the switch to Apple. Sometimes she will be typing an e-mail or a word document and a half hour of work will just vanish. She has had to re-set her desktop settings two or three times as they keep resetting back to the origional factory settings.
My computer has a few problems of it's own. The hole in the case for the tracpad and button wasn't cut right so The whole cover needs t be replaced. This was diagnosed by a Genious at one of the Apple stores. I also seem to get electric shocks sometimes from the right side of the computer were my wrist rests when I type. My computer also freezes all the time. Just fozen like a PC with no way out (force quit won't work). The computer also opts to erase my computer and desk top settings from time to time.
The problem is we are stuck. We can't sent them out to America for repair or the government of Thailand will make us pay 1000 dollars each for import tax. You can carry them on your person, but they get heavily taxed when shipped.
I want to be happy with my investment but these computers were very expensive and they really shouldn't be breaking down all the time and freezing. In fact I suggested we get them because we didn't want computers that broke down and froze all the time. My wife is pretty unhappy with my decision here.

Unresponsive and random freezing macbook pro mid 2012
So the last couple of weeks i am getting the wheel of fortune freeze.
The macbook for a number of seconds stops responding, etc
Its not all of the time, i might get a couple of hours of use without issues and/or
this constant annoyance !
Also trying to watch a movie in vcl can get frustrating with a similar behaviour.
One thing i noticed, but i am not sure,
when streaming video material from an external drive i didn't get any issues,
so i suspect the drive..
After watching the activity monitor (not processor or memory stress happening)
and the console window i got nowere browsing the issues.
I did a new internet restore (erasing the drive first)
But the issue continues.
So, what should i do next ????
i am attaching the etrecheeck and some log intros

Since the problem persisted across a clean reinstall, it has to be a hardware issue. Note that Apple Hardware Test results can only be relied on if they are positive - ie, if a hardware problem is detected, you can be sure that hardware problem exists. On the other hand, if nothing is found, that really doesn't mean much. It just means that of the things Apple Hardware Test is capable of checking for, none are failing in a way that Apple Hardware Test can detect, and it tells you nothing at all about the things it's not capable of checking.
If I had to guess, I'd say it's likely your hard drive is dying. However, that's just a guess. You should have an Apple tech take a look for you. -
Randomly my macbook pro enters sleep mode
i recently purchased a macbook pro 2.4 GHz intel core i5 OSX lion. ( endning dec 2011)

How do I force shutdown my computer. I am hoping by rebooting I will be able to clear this problem
Doing what nbar says is dangerous, so I recommend you to try other steps before.
First, press Alt, Command and Esc keys, so the Force Quit window will show up. Choose Finder and relaunch it, so the copy process will stop. Then, you will be able to turn off the Mac.
If it doesn't work, press Control, Command and Eject keys to restart. If nothing works, do what nbar says -
After Service, Airport card stops working randomly on macbook pro 17" early 2009
Hi,
So after the last time my computer was serviced, the airport card stops working randomly on moving the screen.
Upons restarting the computer, it sometimes says wi-fi hardware not installed. Then, if I move my machine around,
lift it up, turn it around, place it back on the table and restart it, it works again. I don't understand this.
And all this started happening the moment my warranty ran out. Extremely frustrating!!It may be possible that one of the following may be the issue:
The internal AirPort Extreme card is not seated properly.
The internal Wi-Fi antenna connector is not seated properly in the AirPort Extreme card.
The internal AirPort Extreme card's connector is faulty or damaged.
The internal AirPort Extreme card is faulty.
To get an idea on how the Extreme card is installed, please check out the following iFixit article. -

You've no non-Apple kexts loaded, so I'm ruling out a software problem.

I'm running 10.9 Mavericks.
The other day as I was doing my every day activites I realized randomly my macbook pro began preforming extremely poorly.
My problems:
Boot time now takes 2-3 minutes.
Applications take 2-3 minutes to open.
Applications will say they're open sometimes but will not display.
Applications will take several tries to quit.
Applications, especially Safari, will randomly crash.
Everything is slower and takes a while to do, even opening a simple folder will take a minute.
The things I have tried:
I ran a Hardware test and the results showed it is not a hardware problem.
I have reset the SMC and PRAM and the problems still occur.
I have Verified and repaired the Disk/Permissions, however it seems to stop mid-way through (after about an hour).
I have replaced my HDD as I thought it was failing, bought a brand new SSD and installed a clean version of Mavericks. It did not help.
I have an appointment with a "genius" at the apple bar tomorrow as my laptop is still under warranty, but would like to figure out what's wrong before I go.
I assume it HAS to be a hardware problem as it has transfered from my HDD to a clean install on a brand new SSD.
Another question I had is if Apple usually handles these things quickly? I need my laptop for my upcoming finals as I'm a computer science major.I'm running 10.9 Mavericks.

Macbook Pro Boot time and general response time slow.
I'm running 10.9 Mavericks.
Yesterday as I was doing my every day activites I realized randomly my macbook pro began preforming extremely poorly.

I can't seem to figure out what's wrong with it. I can re-install the OS but with my internet it is estimated to take 8 hours.
Any suggestions?Your disk may be failing. Do not attempt to resintall the OS until your disk is healthy.
Backup your data immediately:
Before proceeding you should make sure you have a current backup. If it has been getting slower over time your disk could be a failing slowly. SATA drives have two retry modes: short and long. They can continue operating as read errors are increasing. The long retry cycle is very long and can cause significant performance degradation. If it has started long retries then it is likely to get worse and eventually fail. SSDs also have a failure mode where the fail slowly.

Make a Genius Bar reservation http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ .
or find an Apple Authorized Service Provider https://locate.apple.com/country
If it is a failing disk, consider an upgrade to a 1 TB, 7200 RPM disk. Check out a one terabyte HGST 7K1000 7200 rpm, SATA III drive from OWC or consider an SSD. -
MacBook Pro Core Duo 15" Random Shutdown worsening
Have had my MBP for over 18 months now, and any glitches have been software so far.
Two nights ago, I was working on my MBP and suddenly went into an unwakeable sleep. After resetting, I could start up intermittently up to 5 minutes, but it seems to have gotten worse, to where I'm at a point where I can only manage a few seconds of startup before it blacks out again, either off or again, into an unwakeable darkness.
It's the same with just battery, battery & AC, or just AC. It wont stay on long enough for me to start from CD, neither will it stay on to let me Firewire my info/account to another Mac.
At times when I cannot start at all, I can hear a small 'electrical snap' (best description I can give) when pressing the power button, whichever combination of power source I use. I guess this is normal, but I wouldn't notice it usually.
For anyone who've had their MacBook Pro with "Random Shutdown" fixed by Apple out of warranty, could you give an example of cost?
Thanks
Sion Joycei dread to think how much it would cost, but i was having random shutdown problems as of last week. completely out of the blue
but, the latest Firmware update seems to have solved it! not before i went and bought another battery of course
one thing i have noticed though is the eta on the battery fullness is completely random now, it'll go from having about a minute left to having an hour and 30mins
