Random shutdown on a 15" macbook pro

Hello, my macbook pro has started to randomly shutdown. The battery does not seem to charge much beyond 0% either. Here is the battery information from System Profiler -- is it likely just a battery issue?
Model Information:
Serial Number: Sony-ASMB012-356a-75f4
Manufacturer: Sony
Device name: ASMB012
Pack Lot Code: 0003
PCB Lot Code: 0000
Firmware Version: 102a
Hardware Revision: 0400
Cell Revision: 0303
Charge Information:
Charge remaining (mAh): 0
Fully charged: No
Charging: Yes
Full charge capacity (mAh): 1674
Health Information:
Cycle count: 309
Condition: Good
Battery Installed: Yes
Amperage (mA): 1945
Voltage (mV): 11875

It's picking a particularly bad way of telling you - your MBP should never just shut down - bug given your charge capacity seems significantly down from what you should be able to achieve I'd say yes, it looks to be a battery issue.
How old is your Mac?
Your battery should retain about 80% of its charge capacity after 300 cycles, and since you only have 309 cycles, your battery seems to be much below that.
If you've an Apple Store nearby and you're under warranty or AppleCare you may want to ask about it - they might replace your battery at no charge, depending upon a wide variety of factors.

  • Random internet slowing down on MacBook Pro with Retina Display

    Hi there!
    I have a 15" Macbook Pro With Retina Display, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel Iris Pro 1024 MB, OS X 10.9.2 (13C64). late 2013
for some reason since the last system upadate, my internet on my Macbook has been slowing down at random times during operation, sometimes I am using facetime and browsing Safari, facetime continues operating normally but everything else relted to the interent would show me that there is no internet connection "Basically i cannot use anything related to the internet unless i turn off and on the wirless adapter. and its not just while using Facetime and safari but Safari alone aswell "one second am using the internet no problem playing video on youtube and checking facebook and all the sudddent it stops loading and tells me that there is no internet connected though the wireless indicator shows otherwise.
I have really fast internet and am the only one using it, i have comcast Blast Plus "57 MB/S download speeds".
could u please help me get the bottom of this random occuring issue ?

  • Randomly losing space on my macbook pro?

So I've got about 22 free gigs on my macbook pro, but sometimes lately it randomly drops to 19 or so even though I haven't downloaded anything new.  When it does this the computer starts running much more slowly.  If I restart the computer I get the free space back and the computer runs normally.  It's very annoying.
Edit: It doesn't do this all at once, it rapidly loses little bits until it gets to around 19 and then seems to level off.

    Wooginator wrote:
But then shouldn't the space come back when I close programs, instead of just when I restart?
No. Once the system allocates a page file, it doesn't give it back until you reboot. It can reuse that page file for a new program if an old one is closed.
Also how do I tell by looking at system utility memory whether this is what's happening?
At the peak of the slowness and disk usage, check Activity Monitor > System Memory > Page outs. To account for the space usage, you should expect a total page out size of multiple GB (3GB at least, could be much higher). To account for slowness, add the rates for Page ins and Page outs; if that rate is high, that would explain the slowdown. I can't quantify "high" because I don't know the capabilities of your hardware.

  • Randomly freezing cursor on NEW Macbook Pro

I have a new 17" Macbook Pro - 2 weeks old. I noticed almost immediately that there was an issue with either the trackpad being unresponsive OR the computer
is thinking before acting. Anyway, the cursor freezes randomly - sometimes for a second, and sometimes for several seconds. I've been very conscious of how I'm tracking, I have everything turned off in the trackpad preferences.
Is this a software or hardware issue and will I need to bring the unit in for
    exchange or repair?
    thank you.

Reformat the drive using 'Zero all data' under Security Options and reinstall your system. If it still does it after that, have it looked at.

  • IMessage has randomly stopped working on my Macbook Pro, what can I do?

My iMessage on my macbook pro has stopped working. I can log in just fine and I have logged out and back in but still cannot send or receive messages. It worked just fine at my house and last year at college but for whatever reason it has stopped working now. What can I do to fix this?
I keep everything up to date and currently have no updates ready at this time.
I also cannot currently FaceTime from my computer either, but both of these work just fine on my iPhone 5 which is connected to the same wifi.

Right now the best thing to do is be patient. The last six days many people have been reporting problems with FaceTime. The source of the problems remains unknown.

DO NOT use Tech Tool Pro on your Intel Mac. It is only a PPC version. TTP has not released an Intel version yet.
TechTool Pro hasn't been, but the Intel version of TechTool Deluxe was released sometime in the last few days. I couldn't say if that's the version Nancy is using, of course, but it is finally available for download (with instructions to create a bootable CD) for those who have enrolled an AppleCare Protection Plan.

  • Random trumpet fanfare sound from Macbook pro "15" retina

I have this problem that really annoys me sometimes it's just that  my macbook is making a sound like a trumpet fanfare, and it just happens randomly, not at any specific moments and i have no clue what that could make that sound, i usually only have safari, mail, skype, spotify and league of legends open, and i can't see what could cause the sound, cause there isn't any commercials when the sound comes, and i don't know what to do

Do you have Growl by any chance?
Temporarily disable the notifications by clicking the icon in the upper right hand corner of your menu bar. See if the problem persists.

  • Forced Shutdown Required to reboot MacBook Pro

I have a MBP running 10.4.11. I recently changed my bluetooth mouse from the Mighty Mouse to the Kensington Pilotmouse Mini Bluetooth. I installed their Mouseworks 3.0r1 software. One big issue; if I do not shutdown bluetooth and then use the trackpad to shutdown the computer, the computer will not shutdown unless I use the power button to do so. The desktop icons disappear but the cursor icon remains active. This never happened with the Mighty Mouse. Is there another way to shut down the computer?

  • Random Clap Noise, Macbook Pro

For the last week or so I have been hearing a random noise occur on my Macbook Pro. I just got it for Christmas so it is brand new. The only way I can really describe it is almost a clapping sound. I have no idea where it is coming from. I have even tried to shut off my computer and turn it back on and once I start going on Safari it seems to make the noise. It doesn't happen all the time which makes me feel crazy. And the fact I can't figure out where it is coming from is infuriating. Help!

I know this is old, but I wanted to help resolve it in case any one came to this thread by searching (like I did).
I had the same issue - turns out it was notification sounds in Messages. Every time someone logged in or out it made that clap sound. Disabled it and not a peep clap since.

  • Macbook pro late 2011 Kernel Panic: bad ram? Not really

Hi guys, I'm Experiencing random kernel panics with my MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Late 2011. The kernel panics are completely random but I found a way to reproduce it with playing 2 videos in youtube simultaneously. The longest interval between kernel panics is about 20 minutes; I got sometimes 2 hours results.
Running the mac in safe mode, I can use the mac for hours and the kernel panic will not happen.
Strange thing is that the problem arise even when I load a linux live distro (ubuntu): this makes me think it's an hardware related problem.
I think my problem is related to this thread: Processor context corrupt.
I already changed the ssd and the ram (2x4 GB new Crucial modules) but kernel panic is still happening. No results even resetting PRAM and SMC.
Here's a little extract of kernel panic: as you'll see there are no third party modules loaded and applications installed.

My main concern is: could this be overheating related?
Temperature levels are affected by several things such as the type and number of applications open, the ambient temperature, how the MBP is physically positioned and occasionally by foreign matter inside the unit.  The temperatures that you describe for given circumstances are not necessarily out of line.  Here is a screenshot of a temperature monitor from my MBP as I respond to you:
This is with a very light load on the MBP resources and is less than the 50°c that you report, but there could be explanations for the differences.  The specific details would have to be examined but all told I do not view this as a matter for grave concern.
Temperatures in the 90°c+ range are not unusual when running applications such as Skype or rendering video.  Again knowing the details would be required to make a definitive statement one way or the other.
Be aware that there are thermal shutdown provisions in the MBP that will protect it from heat damage.
    Ciao.

  • Duo Displays Problem on MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) Resolution 2560x1440 and 1280x800, Sometime 2560x1440 is blank screen and must restart to fixed it

    Dear all,
I found some problems for using Duo Displays with MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) display and Samsung UHD Display (U28D590). I use resolution on my macbook is 1280x800, Samsung UHD Display is 2560x1440 And Connect with Display port to mini display port.
But I use sometime found always blank screen on Samsung Display and I tried to unplug mini display port and plug it again but it is not working until I shutdown and restart my macbook pro, my display back to working.
I want to fix this problem because it is very trouble for my working a lot.
    Thank you very much
    Phot

The symptoms I'm getting now, and I'm not sure if they're any different, suggest that for some reason Mountain Lion thinks my display resolution is higher than what it is, as wether I'm turning AirPlay on or off, it keeps changing it (on the MacBook) to what looks like maybe 1080p.

Games can be very CPU/GPU intensive and temperatures in the 90°c range are not uncommon.  Note that there are thermal shutdown provisions in the Macbook Pro that will turn the computer off before damage from heat will harm it.
If possible, play games on it in environments are cool and consider a cooling pad if you wish to play games often.
    Ciao.
