Random Shutdown & Random Screensaver Hang

I left my Macbook, all updates installed, on last night to convert some video to DVD and burn the disk. I woke up this morning to find it wswitched off. The power settings are set to never turn off, and nothing sceduled either. None of the software running has anything sceduled or instructed to shutdown.
Also randomly when I leave it on over night I find that it will go into screensaver, display will turn off (as instructed in the power settings), but when I wake up in the morning no number of key presses, mouse clicks/movements, wake up the screen to the password screen to deactivate the screensaver. It is not switched off as pressing the power button doesn't turn it on I have to hold it for 5 seconds to do a foreced switch off of the machine.
It is a 2 month old Macbook, 1gb Ram, 2ghz Core Duo. I'm also using an Apple Nano dock and an Apple bluetooth mighty mouse.
If I could post a log, I would, but I don't know where to start.
Thanks.

Getting random shutdowns also. Reinstalled the OS with upgrades to 10.4.9 and the problems still occured. Went back down to 10.4.8 and still had the problems. My machine did also shutdown when I ran strictly off the power cord by removing the battery. The only thing I can think of that is causing problems in my machine which is 1 year old and has had no problems is the battery firmware upgrade. I don't know how to revert that. I did order a new battery. Maybe it will make the firmware upgrade happy. I'm sort of running out of options here.

  • Random Application hangs having installed Mavericks 10.9.1

Having installed mavericks 9.1 just before Christmas I find various applications hang at random points. I list some of those happening since 28th December:
    Finder "Open With"
    Save As (in Powerpoiint)
    Save AS (in Grab)
Start Lightroom (get initial screen splash, lock the database but never get the Library screen up) Had this several times
    Start Elements 11
    On Opening USB memory stick
On inserting CF card into reader
    On Saving an Excel file
On loading a new page in Safari
    In Word on "save as"
In Word when highlighting a word (to make it bold)
In most cases (but not all) A Forced Quite leaves something in the running processes whiuch stops the application from starting again and stops me doing a clean shutdown (I have to do a power off and power on)
After a restart, most of the time the application will start up cleanly but on at least two occasions I have had to reinstall mavericks as I couldn't get to the main screen (although in both cases a Safe start came up OK.
I have done Disk checks on all disks with nothing showing.
I have Console running but I can't recognise anything in there as being a significant error, along with Activity Monitor.
I have also run Etrecheck and removed all startup items.
I am running on an 18BG Early 2008 mac pro which has never suffered from this type of problem before. The only applications which give any hang dumps are Microsoft (Office 2011) which have been duly sent off.
Can anybody suggest how to go about debugging this situation?

This is a very common problem with Mavericks and Mountain Lion. I had this issue so many times and many others probably did too. I went into Preferences-->Security&Privacy and select "Anywhere" under allow apps from.
If that doesn't work. You should repair disk permissions on your hard drive. There is a case where the files on the hard drive is not organized and therefore, the mac doesn't recognize it. Go into disk utility, select Macintosh HD or your mac partition, then press repair disk permissions. My macbook pro took 15 minutes for this disk repair process.

  • Random system hang-ups with Kernel 3.2.1-1 and catalyst 11.12

    Hello,
i have a very strange problem for the last month or so (i'm afraid i cannot say, when it exactly happened the first time or if it was after a upgrade): My system just randomly crashes. I haven't yet found out when it exactly crashes and how to reproduce it. But it happens almost every 2-3 days.
When the system hangs up, the last second of sound repeat over and over again. I can't move my mouse anymore as well as typing has no effect. I cannot change to another terminal. I cannot ssh into the laptop nor can i ping it.
In /var/log/messages.log, there is nothing usefull.. It just ends with the old kernel messages and then the new ones, when the system restarts. No error or so.
System runs on a Thinkpad X121e with AMD E-350 CPU. I have installed catalyst 11.12 with xorg-server 1.11.3. I will now compile catalyst 12.1 and see if it happens again.
Does anyone have a clue why the system crashes? Has it anything to do with catalyst?
    Best regards,
    pyro

isofluran wrote:Again, as I metioned before, the problem is likely not a hardware one but it is actually related to the kernel update (2.6.19)  or to an update which was performed at the same time.
Can anyone give a proposal for a step by step procedure to isolate the problem?
As I don't believe these crashes are related to anything but the kernel, one way of debugging your issues could be:
    * boot Knoppix
    * zcat /proc/config.gz | some non-volatile media
    * boot arch
    * get the current ABS
    * replace config in kernels/kernel26 with the one from Knoppix
    * makepkg
    * install and test
When that kernel runs, try to diff the two configs and see what's changed in arch. Also comparing both kernel versions if no significant changes exist might hint on the kernel being the problem.

  • Random System Hangs - 100 % SSD Usage

I'm having some significant issues with a new PC build. I have a 240 gb Ultra II.  I have 8.1 installed on it, as well as a few other programs (I'm at 182 GB free).  Now, at random times when I'm using my system, everything will suddenly hang.  All programs become unresponsive, the mouse sometimes locks up, ctrl+alt+delete won't do anything, etc.  This lasts for about 30 seconds, then everything usually returns to normal.  I leave task manager open at all times now, and it shows that during these hangs, my SSD "active time" jumps to and stays at 100%. These hangs don't seem to be linked to specific software.  They occur randomly, even when my computer is under no significant load.  I've already tried a clean install of 8.1.  I've tried disabling superfetch/prefetch and other background system processes.  I'm very confident that I am free of any viruses/malware.  I'm suspecting some sort of hardware issue, but the SanDisk Dashboard shows that my disk health is fine.  My firmware is also up to date. Has anyone had similar issues?  Any advice or thoughts?

Hi Deponia, Thanks for the suggestions.  I've already tried a complete format and reinstallation of windows, and the issue still recurred.  I've also tried a repair installation from the windows disc, and that also did not eliminate the issue. After a couple google searches, I'm not seeing much about compatibility issues with the motherboard.  I have an AsRock H97 Pro4. I'll try to contact sandisk support.  I'm getting advice on other forums as well, I'm going to try increasing my virtual memory.

  • Everything randomly crashes / hangs

Hello and thank you for taking the time to help me out here.
I have a desktop computer with Arch. For the past several years I've been experiencing random crashes where my entire system is totally hung up. I can't do anything and have to do a hard reboot. For a while I was able to SSH into the box and do a soft/proper reboot, and those times it seemed like it was xorg was the culprit. Lately though, when the computer crashes I can't even SSH into it, doesn't answer to pings etc. Nothing to do but hard reboot.
Now here's where it might get interesting. I'm using LVM2 to combine several physical volumes into one large logical volume. On this volume (which spans 2 whole disks + 1 partition on a 3rd disk) I have an XFS filesystem. I use this for all my digital hoarding needs and general storage of stuff (music, movies, tv, etc). Back in May, one of the disks started failing so I took the entire volume offline until I could afford new disks. From that point on and all summer I don't think I had one single crash. If I had, it was very rare. The computer could run 24/7 for weeks with no problems. Now, early September I bought new disks, moved all my data and got all my LV online again. That took a while, but no problems. But I'll be damned, it didn't take many hours after having my LV back online before the computer started randomly crashing again. AAAAARGH! I could also mention that during the summer, when my giant LV was offline, I did very very little torrenting, and very little downloading with sabnzbd. But of course when I had my storage space back, I started torrenting and "sabnzbd'ing" again. The crashes are totally random and unpredictable, I haven't been able to find any pattern, except that sometimes they seem to correlate with torrent-related things, e.g. starting a torrent, so I recently switched from transmission-daemon to rtorrent, and for a few days that seemed to have a positive effect, but today everything crashed again.
Any ideas? It seems to be related to the LVM/XFS volume?!
    Some specs and info:
AMD Phenom II X4 965 cpu
    12 GB RAM
    Kernel 3.16.3-1-ARCH
    Xorg 1.15.2-1
Catalyst-total 14.4-23 (Radeon HD 5400 something something cheap graphics card)
XMonad 0.11-6 with various statusbars made with dzen/conky
transmission-daemon or rtorrent usually running in the background
sabnzbd and sickbeard usually running in the background
mpd usually running in the background
everything else running in the background is fairly vanilla I think.
Let me know if you need any other information to help me out here. I haven't personally been able to find anything in the logs that would indicate the reason for the crashes.
Thanks again for any help in figuring this out! It's getting very frustrating!

you should definitely check your hardware for issues first
But if you only get crashes when using LVM2+XFS it could just as well be some serious bug with either LVM2 or XFS or something that only happens when you use both.
Random crashes that often happen when starting torrents (which tends to be IO heavy), also sounds a lot like filesystem issue to me.
even if 'linux should never crash' there will always be bugs that might get unnoticed for ages, especially if you're running some relatively uncommon combination like LVM2 with XFS.

  • AMD/ATi with xf86-video-ati is glitching (random frame hang)

I've asked #archlinux about this multiple times to no avail. Also, I can't find anything on the Wiki about an issue like this.
Basically my computer hangs for around a 8th-4th second or so about every 20-40 seconds. The hang is visual only (i think), meaning no audio glitches or network glitches (that I'm aware of). I have a OpenGL test writing out frame rate, and during the hang the FPS consistently drops from 61 to 51. No CPU spikes are visible in the System Monitor, so my guess is that it's video driver related.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I have an overclocked ATi graphics card (specs below) so I'm thinking that's probably related to the issue. Any help is very welcome.
    ~ system specs ~
    DE: Gnome Shell 3.2.2.1
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 920
    GPU: AMD Radeon HD 4870 (O.C.) 512Mb
    RAM: 8Gb Kingston
ps. I've tried many different combinations of Cool'n'Quite + cpufrequtils with no luck. ACPID 2.0 is disabled in the bios.
[EDIT] also, I would get the Catalyst drivers if they worked with Xorg 1.12, but I'd rather have Gnome Shell than Catalyst drivers ATM.

Yes I am. I've tried taking it out but to no avail.

  • Safari crashes at random and hangs on restart (OS 10.4.11)

I am working with a computer with a Safari problem that has only developed in the last couple of weeks. Safari crashes on different websites (no pattern that I can see although we are creating a log). I have tried the suggested solutions on several different forums (including ApplicationsCache.db and Webpageicons.db removal and various history plist removal).
The iMac in question is running OS10.4.11 and the latest Safari (4.1.3 (4533.19.4)) for that OS. The problem only occurs on this one account and not the other account on the iMac. It is an Intel iMac. Usually after a Safari crash, reopening will cause an unsuccessful attempt to open Google, which is the Home page. A Safari quit and reopen gets a normal Safari open.
Switching to Firefox is not an option and all software is up-to-date.
    Any help would be appreciated.

That didn't work. The problem is now on both accounts
That's an indication the startup disk may need repairing.
Launch Disk Utility. That's located in /Applications/Utilities
Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If the disk needs repariing follow the instructions for Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks

  • Screensaver hangs macbook

    Hello,
i'm using a mobility home (network home which gets cached on my mac).
everything works fine unless my mac SLEEPS or the screensaver kicks in.
both lead to the same issue:
when i try to enter my user/pass and hit enter, it hangs forever and i have to force shut it and turn the mac back up again.
any idea why is this happening and how to solve it?
    Thanks,
    --Roland

    Hi Roland,
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup),  use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, move these files to the Desktop if they exist. Will require resetting some options.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.<12digitHex Number>.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.slideshow.< 12digitHexNumber>.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktopscreensaver.rsspictures .plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.preference.desktopscreeneffect .plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    Then reboot once more.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
Other than that it might be a keychain problem, but let's see how this does.

  • Two years later, a random, hopeless e9105z PC from Hewlett Packard with continual freezes.

I posted a message over a year ago with no luck, and wanted to see if a second posting would give any advice.
In short, my PC freezes randomly, with no predictability or triggering events.  The only thing that happens is the system locks up, the mouse pointer is frozen on the screen, and the system is essential unuseable.  All I can do is a hard power down.
Over the 100+ freezes I've had, here are some odd things that have happened:
    (1) Around 30% of the time, pressing F8 to run system diagnostics fixes the problem.  When I run system diagnostics, 90% of the time, the system comes back perfectly clean.
    (2) Of the times that systems diagnostics has been run, here are the errors that have been found:
--several times, it warned me that my Western Digital 640GB HDD was about to fail
--two times, it warned me that I had no boot path
--two times, it warned me that my Intel X-25M SSD was on the fritz
    (3) Sometimes I can turn back on and be okay, other times, I have gotten something to the extent of 'boot sector missing, press Ctrl-Alt-Del to reset'
    (4) system has been unplugged/replugged several times, motherboard dusted off, SATA connectors unplugged/replugged, etc.
    (5) the system sometimes will fully boot up in Safe Mode, other times it just freezes up during the initialization.  when it does hang in Safe Mode, it does not get hung up on the same file twice.
    (6) For Windows Update, the NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller June 2009 driver update crashes my system.  I have to do a system restore.  This update is hidden/disabled in the Windows Update profile
Recently the freezes are happening once every 1-3 minutes every time I turn on.  They used to go once every 2 months, then maybe once every 2 weeks.  Tonight, oddly enough, my computer has worked for over an hour without problem.
HP's tech support has been useless.  It seems like they are more or less following a flow chart that has little applicability to this situation.  Telling me that my printer and Microsoft keyboard were the problems.  (Really?  Am I that stupid?)  They succeeded in gringing me down over the phone.  And besides, I'm out of warranty.
Is this most likely a bad motherboard, or an NVIDIA chipset bug, or a Windows 7 compatibility issue?  I have no idea where to start (or end) in this problem.
    My configuration:
    Win7 clean install
    6GB memory (Stock)
    Phenom II X4 945 (stock)
    Intel X-25M primary/boot
    Western Digital 640GB HDD (stock)
    Microsoft mouse
    Microsoft keyboard
A printer that is hooked up about 30% of the time (Lexmark X8350 POS)
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,

I am having a similar issue with random freezes/hangs as many posts with my Pavilion Elite m9350f that I bought a year ago or so.  I have automatic update turned on and have gone to HP and MSFT sites to ensure all drivers/software are current.  I have also attempted to clear the fan and heat sinks of lint.
This has been a chronic issue since the PC was new that has good days and bad.  On good days I will not see a crash at all.  Bad days, the PC will randomly hang every 5 minutes or so EVEN when cold, while in BIOS setup, and operating in safe mode.  The software applications I use don’t seem to be relevant (they are limited to Office Pro 2010 and StarCraft II).  The typical “crash” is a hang that freezes the display and all user I/O.  USB ports will often power down (laser mouse light will often turn off as does PS2 keyboard).  I also don’t hear the buzz of the hard drive (it appears to spin down).  I do hear the fans even after a hang.  A power cycle is needed to reboot and bring the PC back online.
The ‘crashes” seem to corrupt data on the HD.  As a workaround to fixing this issue, I reinstalled/repaired Vista several times because as time from install increased, it seemed bad days became more prevalent.  Then, three months ago, because the PC crashed too hard to reload/repair vista, I installed Windows 7 and replaced the hard drive.  When I attempted to attach the faulty hard drive as a secondary drive, my PC would not boot (faulty drive was confirmed?).
Now with the new OS and HD, I am seeing the same problem again.  Like you I am running out of ideas.  I took the PC in for troubleshooting with the GeekSquad where they kept it for a week (three days longer than planned) to run several virus scans and hardware diagnosis programs.  All test passed.  The tech claimed to not duplicate a crash so I thought maybe it was my keyboard and mouse.  I bought new keyboard and mouse on the way out of the shop.  When I got home, the hangs continued…another bad day.  The event log recorded several crashes while the PC was in the shop…I hate being told lies.
My PC Event viewer logs close to 50,000 events most of which mean absolutely nothing to me.  I am unable to find events that appear prior to the 41 and 6008 recovery error notices that might signal a cause.  However, I am getting many instances of Event ID 12 with indicates “The platform firmware has corrupted memory across the previous system power transition.  Please check for updated firmware for your system.”  I assume this means to look for an update to motherboard BIOS?  I am working on finding the right BIOS now.  I don’t believe it likely a BIOS update will fix the hang issue.
Reading through the forums, I see this issue on many different PC models configured with many variants of software.  Like you I don’t have my PC working correctly yet.  Maybe we just need to accept that we bought a lemon and start replacing parts?  I’m thinking power supply and motherboard…

  • Shutdown immediate hanging

I need to develop a scripts that shuts down all databases on a server. One of my databases sometimes hangs after issuing "shutdown immediate" command, and I want to handle this situation in my script. What I am thinking is to add "shutdown abort" in the script if "shutdown immediate" does not work. However, I do not know how to determine the database is hanging during shutdown immediate. Can you advise me on how to handle the shutdown immediate hanging problem in my shell script? Or is there better way to handle this in the script?
Thank you very much for your help!

As noted, if your shutdown immediate really hang because of rollback, then my method won't work either. The only different will be Oracle is going to do the rollback at next startup when doing instance recovery. In that case, the startup will appear to be hang.
    Check this metalink doc,

  • Shutdown immediate hangs and HVM of a database

    Hi,
    I have following questions,
    1. What are the possible causes of SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE command hangs
    and doesnt responds.
    2. What do u mean by High Water Mark(HVM) of a database. Because when we
give SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE command there is message in alert log file
mentioning the HVM of a database.
3.Also is there any relationship between shutdown process taking long time to
shutdown a database and HVM of a database.
    4. If the database instance is up for a long time then does it take long time to
    shutdown a instance.
    Thanks,
    Girish A

    Hello,
for 1.) view Metalink Note:375935.1. Maybe you even get an error: "SHUTDOWN: Waiting for active calls to complete". This has nothing to do with HWM but with already logged on sessions. Immediate means new connections are not able to log in, existing connetions are not disconnected at once.
for 2.) the HWM is the highest point to which datafiles have been filled up. This is the value to which you are able to shrink (if you desire to). View Metalink Note:1034330.6 for message "License high water mark" in alert.log at shutdown ("highest number of concurrent users sessions").

  • MacBook hangs; must force shutdown; still hangs

My MacBook was hung, so I did a forced shutdown (i.e., held down the on/off button).  Now it keeps hanging, and I have to keep doing a forced shutdown.  The hang occurs in different situations, but I am always left with a totally stuck computer and no option other than a forced shutdown.  I restarted in safe mode, thinking I'd try doing a repair with Disk Utility.  The machine was not totally hung (i.e. the mouse still moved the cursor), but I couldn't access any menus.  So I did a forced shutdown and restarted in normal mode.  The hanging recommenced.  No progress at all.
    All insights welcome.  Thank you.

False alarm.  I think the problem is the mouse.  Yikes!

  • Internet hangs.. then PC hangs on shutdown or re-boot.

Hello all, Having problem as follows:
PC 1-upstairs. PC 2-downstairs. Operating system:Windows XP home SP2 w/all updates on both. PC 1 connected w/ Wireless-G broadband router 802.11g w/speed booster. PC 2 conected via Wireless-G USB Network Adapter 2.4GHz(802.11g) v4.2-WUSB54Gv4. Problem just recently started occuring. Problem only occurs on PC 2. Problem is intermittant. May occur 1,2,or 3 times a day or may not occur at all in a given day. Internet is accessed via cable TV. Problem only occurs WHILE ON the internet as follows: PC 2 will suddenly appear to lose internet connection completly. Will not do anything on internet. Monitor icon in tray no longer flashes green as it normally does when connected, although it still says It's connected with a strong signal strength. Other programs also fail to work when this occurs. Example: unable to open control panel in start menu. Unable to play PC games. If I leave PC alone for any length of time after problem occurs and then retry problem is still there.  Then when attempting re-boot or shutdown PC will hang at "windows is shutting down screen" and stay there indefinitly until I manually push button and shut down PC. After re-boot everthing will operate normally and problem may or may not occur again that day. Have had only one error message during all these occurences which showed up after a re-boot and said the following:' Access Violation at address 004075E5 in module WUSB54Gv4.exe. Read of Address 00000368.'  Not even sure if this a Linksys related problem but problem ONLY initiates itself while on the internet on PC 2 . I'm stumped and frustrated so any ideas would be helpful. Thanks in advance, Jbones

I've had a similar (if not identical problem). For me this has only started happening since I received a RMA replacement for my original (dead) adapter. I have a second identical adapter purchased more recently and the problem occurs for both WUSB54Gv4's that I own when they are plugged into one computer. The hardware is different between the two systems, so it could be the interface between hardware and drivers. The one that is having the problems is running an MSI K8N Neo Plantinum mainboard with BIOS version 2.1. This BIOS is actually supposed to resolve some problems with USB devices over my previous version, 1.7. And it has resolved an issue of a USB mouse causing the entire USB bus to shut off.
I have done some digging (and kernel debugging) to isolate where the problem occurs. When the hanging occurs, the system process uses up 90-100 percent of the processor time. The problem initially appears to be usbport.sys. Digging further it seems to be a hung IRP from usbehci.sys. Am I looking at something that could be caused by the WUSB service? It is definitely hung. The WUSB54Gv4SVC will not stop after the hangup occurs.
It has almost universally occurred when I am stressing the network connection (large downloads). I am stable for many hours with normal internet use. But, as I have been testing this problem, I have been sending very large (GB-range) downloads via multi-thread download software to stress the connection. And I invariably get the above failure within an hour or two. (And yes, it really does take time, rather than occuring quickly.)
I'm stumped. I've refreshed the Windows drivers (XP Pro SP2), have refreshed the TCP/IP stack, and have uninstalled and reinstalled all USB devices (the first thing that I did was to reinstall the adapter and I have done this both before and after the USB bus refresh), I've even done a safe mode removal of the USB bus hardware and allows the system to do a redetect to reconstruct the USB stack. I have stress tested the adapter both with and without any other USB devices attached to the system. I have checked with and without software firewall (Norton 2006) and antivirus (same). I have also used different file copying software to stress the connection (SMB share copying, FTP, BitTorrent).
