Random Shutdowns and Kernal Panics

I've got an early 2008 Mac pro with 4 gigs of ram. Runs great, except I get a few KP's a week and recently it's been randomly just restarting. Fans aren't running, it's well ventilated, and there doesn't seem to be anything consistantly causing the restarts or the KP's.
Anyone else having this issue? If so, any suggestions? I've been to Apple, but it's never done it while there so they don't know what to tell me.
Any help appreciated.
Mike

Just to exclude that the Kernel Panics (KP) and your restarts are a separate issue, you might like to have a look at that discussion:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7709762#7709762
(the deletion of the preference files sorted out my restarts, and the
monitor USB cable is certainly a point mentioning).
Reference the KP's, as this could be EITHER hardware or software (or BOTH!) related, I would follow the advice given about the RAM.
Good luck.

  • Mac randomly restarts and kernal panics

This is what happens if I move my laptop too much or when I do certain things. I don't know what to technically call this problem and usually when this happens I have to restart. Sometimes it automatically restarts and sometimes its kernal panics. I just really want to know how I can fix or if I can fix this at home because it usually happens at the worst times and its getting really annoying so if anyone knows a fix, I'll be very grateful! The battery is messed up and isn't in the laptop if that helps

I believe it's a sign your GPU is failing which is a common issue with your model. Take it in for service. I believe Apple may have a replacement program that has not yet expired.

  • Random crashes and kernal panics

Hi community, I have been running into a problem with my MBP mid 2010 13' model.
Im not sure what causes it, but occurs 3-6 a day and I already reformatted it twice.
This was what I was able to pull up from the crash report.
Any information will help. I suspect its the ram, but most of the tests have come up clear.

What happens when you insert the original 2 GB RAM chip in place of the 4 GB RAM chip?
Run a RAM test, Rember, from Kelly computing:
    http://www.kelleycomputing.net/Rember/
Run it overnight so you get sufficient loops.
    Ciao.
Do you have two HDDs installed?  If so, have you checked both of them?

  • Random Shutdowns and Logs

Like some others, I have started having random shutdowns and some high fan activity. So I can probably guess that it is the power supply.
However, in previous posts on this topic, some have suggested checking a couple of different acitivity logs that exist somewhere on everyone's Mac.
My question is...what logs might they be, and how does one find them?
    Thanks for any assistance....
    CHUCK
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Chuck--
But is there a log that would show me why the
    computer randomly shutdown?
Shutdowns and going to sleep are two different things. If your power supply is starting to fail, your computer will periodically just shutdown completely. Sometimes, the fans will run faster, but often, they won't. If this happens, you can find it out by looking at the system log right after you reboot, or by typing a command in the Terminal application. Terminal is found in your Utilities folder. You would just open it and type the following command, followed by the "enter" key:
<pre class="command">sudo dmesg | grep shutdown</pre>Unfortunately, those codes are not published anywhere. However, my iMac G5 has shut off a couple of times due to the UPS inexplicably draining its battery. The last time was Sunday night, and here's the code I get from that command (you'll have to type in your password when it asks):
<pre class="command">AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = -110</pre>I've also seen -118 and -122 as the error codes. I think the latter came when I had the same random shutdown problem. You can also find the same information in your system log, using the Console application. However, it's mixed in with a whole bunch of other stuff, so it's harder to find. You can use the little search window at the top right of the Console app to help you narrow it down. If your system has been on overnight since it last shut down, you may need to look at an older log, so look at the one marked system.log.0.gz for yesterday, and so on, where the larger the number in the name, the older it is.
The second problem is that the computer overheats and puts itself to sleep. This is, fortunately, easier to find in the logs. Once it cools down a bit and you can get it running again, use the Console application and see if you see lines much like this:
<pre class="command">May 28 10:49:08 localhost kernel: Thermal Manager: max temperature exceeded for 30 seconds, forcing system sleep

If you see this error, the fans can't get enough cool air flowing through the interior of the computer. Some people have reported that they've had success in fixing it by carefully cleaning out the vent holes at the bottom of the iMac, so air flows freely again. They've reported that pet hair or dust can get in there and clog it up.
On the other hand, this log is from a replacement logic board on that iMac. When I showed the techs that log, they didn't even bother with any tests, other than look to see if the interior of the computer was dirty (it wasn't) before they decided to replace the logic board as a defective.

  • Safari causing kernal panics and random shutdowns and overheating.

My original Inel macbook pro is getting rather sick and I am hoping to hold out for the new 15 inches when they eventually unpdate.
However Safari is causig all kinds of hangs restarts kernal panics overheating with my machine and yet if I use google chrome for the exact same web sites these same problems are not present.  I much prefer to be able to keep using safari and I realise that I haev not got the most up to date software since Lion is not supported on my machine but it is as up todate as snow leaopard allows.
I also realise that a more than 5 year old machine is doing very well especially since it is rarely off. It has outlasted 2 timecapsules and countless airport express but the anomyly between 2 browsers is weird. I doubt this has a solution but maybe the odd apple tech who read this might find it a challenge to know why one browser causes heart issues but another doesn't.

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.

  • Leopard and kernal panic after starting up external hard drive

    Hi,
After upgrading to Leopard, everytime I turn on my external hard drive after my Powerbook G4 starts up, I get a kernal panic and it says that I need to shutdown. So I do and when it restarts the disk is mounted fine with no problems. Why would it have a kernal panic? I don't need to access the external all the time so I don't need to have it on. What should I do?
    Thanks,
    Mary

    Hi,
The drive is connected via firewire through the back of my Apple Cinema Display firewire hub. Out of curiosity, when I disconnect the drive from the ACD hub and connect it directly to my Powerbook Firewire connection, I found that I did not get a kernel panic when I turn on the drive. It mounts without a problem. It may be the ACD firewire connection.
This is the panic log that I get.

  • Applecare And Kernal panics.

Ok so I have this ibook 14" 1.2ghz
I have had MAJOR problems with it for a long time. I have sent it to apple at least 7 times. and it still gives me kernal panics and freezes at random times....
Will apple replace it because I still have it under an extended warranty or no? I would like a new mac book :P or just my old ibook just a working one.
    It might be the CPU...
Will they replace it under warranty yes or no? I mean the whole thing cause they seem to not be able to fix it and Comp USA is getting tired of seeing my face.

After 3 times I would have asked for a replacement. Whether they'll replace it is anyone's guess. We can't guess Apple's policy as the Terms of Use say. Just with a firm voice speak with them and tell them what you've been through.
I also suggest looking over my kernel panic FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/kernelpanic.html
Note that CompUSA is not where I'd take it, I'd take it to a better authorized service center in your area as listed by http://www.apple.com/buy/
The big superstores tend to have lousy support. Except Apple's retail.
Call 1-800-APLCARE and tell them what you've been through, and if you have to, also speak to customer relations.

  • Windowserver crashes and kernal panics from iPhoto in Mountain Lion

I am using a Mid2010 MBP 15inch i7. I have just upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. Currently whenever I try to open iPhoto my MBP completely crashes and reboots woith each report stating a windowserver crash or occasionaly a kernal panic. I was having similar problems in Lion when with windowserver crashes when switching between windows or scrolling in Numbers or switching to iPhoto from other apps. I upgraded to ML because I was told this may fix the issue. Now i can't keen open iPhoto. I have Pram restarted and iPhoto opens but as soon as an image is selected I have another window server crash. Pre ML install I did a clean install of Lion and it made no difference.
Posted below is a copy of my last error report. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully no one here told you that. A common theme is people blaming all problem on Lion or Mountain Lion, whatever operating system was just released and telling people with obvious hardware problems that they need to wait for a "bug fix". Updates come and updates go - taking warranties with them - but no fix ever happens.
There is a small possibility that the "Soundflower" kernel extension is giving you problems. It is very unusual to see a kernel panic without Soundflower being listed. If you remove that and still have panics, then it is definitely a hardware problem.

  • Cd won't eject and kernal panics: what does it mean?

I've been getting kernal panics from time to time recently, and just last night a burned DVD refused to mount, show up in Disk Utility, or eject. i tried rebooting with the mouse down with no effect, and then i tried option-apple-O-F'ing and typing "eject CD," but it told me "can't OPEN the EJECT drive." is there anything i can do to get the DVD out? i'm out of warranty and apple care at this point.
The drive still makes noises on bootup, so at least the power is connected correctly. But I just checked System Profiler, and under Disc Burning it says, "No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly." Does this just mean that the drive somehow got disconnected? Would it be worth my while to open the computer up and make sure the connection is tight?

you'd be wasting your time; its so tight in there that the optical has no place to go.

  • Spinning Beach Ball of Death and Kernal Panics - Capacitors?

    Hi,
I got this email from my mother. This is her computer, not mine. I'm technically adept, so I'd be able to help her. I'm not sure this is actually a kernal panic, or if it's another issue such as capacitors?
    ================
Lately sometimes (at least every couple of days) when I first turn on my iMac G5 (1.6 GHz, 1.25 GB RAM, OS 10.3.9) after it's been shut off all night long, I get the colored spinning beach ball of death for a minute or so. Then the background on the monitor turns grey-green and in a box in the middle of the screen is "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button" - this is written in four languages. I assume this is a kernal panic. When I restart the computer it's okay.
When I turned it on yesterday, however, the monitor was blue, but not normal blue as it was all "wavy." The dock only appeared about halfway up from the bottom of the screen, and only the bottom part of "Mail" appeared - no Mailbox or anything else. I turned it off with the power button and it was then all right.
Today the same thing happened, but I didn't get anything on the screen, except it was a "wavy blue" so I again used the power button to turn it off, and then when I restarted it it came on fine.
I've also noticed that the computer is much slower these past few weeks than previously, especially when using Safari. I have also seen the spinning beach ball of death in black instead of the usual colors.
I have not installed any new programs lately, nor ran any Software Updates lately. I have recently repaired my Permissions.
    ================
Thank you in advance for any suggestions and advice.
    Robbi

    Hi,
Here is the kernal panic log. Thanks. We have done Dr Smoke's Resolving Kernal Panics.

  • Random Shutdown and Mooing

I'm curious. Of those who have MacBooks that exhibit the random shutdown syndrome, how many also have the "mooing" fans? And how many shutdowns have occured to people who don't have a fan that moos?
My fan mooed and only turned on once at full throttle since I purchased my MacBook, and it started shutting down after about six weeks. I wonder if the problem involves the failure of the fan to cool the logic board (or some other part of the computer), which at some point fails due to the high head.
For now, my MacBook again works perfectly, but I wonder what will happen in six weeks' time, since I still have the moo.

I have bought a white MacBook at the Farmer's Market Apple Store in L.A. about a month and a half ago. Since last Sunday, it has been randomly shutting down on me.
It has happened both when the computer was cool (just turned on) and when the computer was hot (not alarmingly hot, though). It has happened with the computer plugged in and with the computer not plugged in. It has happened before the computer has gone to sleep and after the computer has awaken from sleep, never with any overwhelming workload.
It seems pretty random to me and, even though I almost never hear the fans, the temperature seems to have nothing to do with it.
For the past two days, the only way I had to turn it on and not get a shutdown a few seconds later, was to press the on/off button for ten seconds, until the light started blinking fast and it emitted an alien beep before turning on. Even so, it usually shut down after the first time it went to sleep.
Now that I am back in Brazil, where I live, the Apple phone service tells me they can't offer me any support (even though I bought it less than two months ago), 'cause you only get phone support for three months in the country where you bought the computer. This after two days of getting nothing but a busy signal from both numbers listed for Brazil in the AppleCare Service and Support Guide.
Granted I haven't bought AppleCare, but this is a major defect and I am appalled that they aren't dealing with this in a more forthcoming way, especially since I am still fully covered by warranty.
I have entered Brazil legally with my laptop, and for a simple lack of assistance and options, I have left it at an Apple Store in Rio for hardware tests. Unfortunately, my computer started up just fine in front of the tech support guy today, for the first time in nearly three days. Let's hope they can replicate the defect and SOLVE IT, godwilling.
But I've looked at many forums and found reports of people having to get their logic boards replaced two or three times, isn't Apple at least acknowledging that there is a problem here?

  • Random Shutdown and Previous shutdown cause: -x2

    Hi,
I had twice "random shutdown" for now. My MacBook is about 4 month old and It happend with about 3 weeks between them.
I tried stress testing it with 'yes >/dev/null' heating it up and cooling it down several times but I could not reproduce the Problem. However, looking at older system.log files, I found the "Previous shutdown cause: -82" lines in there. My question: Some MBs seem to report -72, others -82 as the shutdown cause known as random shutdown but what actually is the difference? Is it possible to guess the time it will take to get it repaired depending on the shutdown cause (which obviously describe two different conditions)?
Thanks a lot in advance and sorry for my somewhat clumsy english;-)
    Peter

I don't know where you are in Austria, but I took my RSD macbook to mcshark in Vienna, and they repaired it, replaced the case, and returned it to me in one day. That was last Friday and it's been working great since. They knew all about the heat sink problem, didn't even ask for my user name or password, left my hard drive completely intact - they were absolutely super.
If you are anywhere near Vienna, call McShark and make an appointment - they'll repair it quickly for sure.

  • Firmware for G5; OS 10.4.7 and Kernal Panics...........!!!!!!!

In updating OS to 10.4.7 last year, I had an issue with the computer seemingly running very quickly, as though it was doing sixty in first gear. I learned it was a "kernal panic" issue (if you don't know what those are, good!) and that upgrading the firmware would fix it; I tried that and fried the drive.
Bought new drive, didn't use the old one, didn't look back. Now the same symptom has started up again, but I don't find any more references on Apple's site for 'upgrading firmware'......anyone know anything about that for powermac machines?
    I'd be most grateful

    Hi, tbfa.
If your question is "How do I troubleshoot a kernel panic?" then this may help.
If you are seeing the following message
    that indicates a kernel panic.
If so, see my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.
    Good luck!

  • Neither RAID nor drives showing up! And kernal panics after 10.4.5

I have a RAID 0 set of two Iomega HDDs. The HDDs are working (power on, spin ok) but neither the RAID nor the individual drives how up in Disk Utility or the desktop. This happened after a kernal panic (see below). Everything was fine before this happened. How do I get the drives back?
After upgrading to 10.4.5, none of my FireWire based recording apps record direct to disk except FCP. BTV Pro and EvoCam both cause kernal panics when I try to record from my DVMC-DA2 (Sony analog to digital converter) to a file. This probably caused the above problem.

I fixed it myself. I restarted my computer from the CD and repaired permissions and disk. I then plugged my 2 HDDs in and they showed up in Disk Utility. I repaired the disks and restarted and the RAID showed up again. Everything seems to be working now.
