Random shutdowns and restarts...where to begin?

This is a client's machine.
It is a second generation G5, 17". It passes all TechTool tests. We have the back cover removed to check for overheating. Thus far, we have not been able to duplicate the problem of the shutdowns and restarts...but the machine is essentially idle all day. The processor is not really being used, so it is not an accurate test.
1. Is there are software utility that will put a load on the processor so that we can recreate the issue?
2. Does this have any known heating issues, like the 20" of this series that were recalled?
Thanks in advance for any help.
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

One not uncommon cause of this problem can actually be the very simple matter of a misaligned power cord collar, Bailey's Dad - see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86817
This might also help to explain why the behviour hasn't been easy to replicate after the move and with the back taken off. Maybe it is now properly seated!
Putting it under load would be a good idea , though. A power supply issue is not out of the question. The SETI "BOINC" software - http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/ - can be used to create an ongoing artificial load. Playing or rendering videos works pretty well (as Miriam has already suggested) too though. So does running "Classic" applications, using the Classic OS9 emulation.
Printing will provide a short term load on the processor and power supply, too.
THe "Rev B" extended repair program that Miriam has linked to only applies to the 20" model , I'm afraid, not the 17".
Cheers

  • Random Shutdowns and Logs

Like some others, I have started having random shutdowns and some high fan activity. So I can probably guess that it is the power supply.
However, in previous posts on this topic, some have suggested checking a couple of different acitivity logs that exist somewhere on everyone's Mac.
My question is...what logs might they be, and how does one find them?
    Thanks for any assistance....
    CHUCK
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Chuck--
But is there a log that would show me why the
    computer randomly shutdown?
Shutdowns and going to sleep are two different things. If your power supply is starting to fail, your computer will periodically just shutdown completely. Sometimes, the fans will run faster, but often, they won't. If this happens, you can find it out by looking at the system log right after you reboot, or by typing a command in the Terminal application. Terminal is found in your Utilities folder. You would just open it and type the following command, followed by the "enter" key:
<pre class="command">sudo dmesg | grep shutdown</pre>Unfortunately, those codes are not published anywhere. However, my iMac G5 has shut off a couple of times due to the UPS inexplicably draining its battery. The last time was Sunday night, and here's the code I get from that command (you'll have to type in your password when it asks):
<pre class="command">AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = -110</pre>I've also seen -118 and -122 as the error codes. I think the latter came when I had the same random shutdown problem. You can also find the same information in your system log, using the Console application. However, it's mixed in with a whole bunch of other stuff, so it's harder to find. You can use the little search window at the top right of the Console app to help you narrow it down. If your system has been on overnight since it last shut down, you may need to look at an older log, so look at the one marked system.log.0.gz for yesterday, and so on, where the larger the number in the name, the older it is.
The second problem is that the computer overheats and puts itself to sleep. This is, fortunately, easier to find in the logs. Once it cools down a bit and you can get it running again, use the Console application and see if you see lines much like this:
<pre class="command">May 28 10:49:08 localhost kernel: Thermal Manager: max temperature exceeded for 30 seconds, forcing system sleep

If you see this error, the fans can't get enough cool air flowing through the interior of the computer. Some people have reported that they've had success in fixing it by carefully cleaning out the vent holes at the bottom of the iMac, so air flows freely again. They've reported that pet hair or dust can get in there and clog it up.
On the other hand, this log is from a replacement logic board on that iMac. When I showed the techs that log, they didn't even bother with any tests, other than look to see if the interior of the computer was dirty (it wasn't) before they decided to replace the logic board as a defective.

  • Why do I get a popup message in multiple languages requiring a shutdown and restart

Why do I keep getting a popup message in multiple languages requiring a shutdown and restart?  Has been going on for a few months.  Because of the shutdown reports have been sent to Apple upon restart.

After it restarted, did you see a dialog box resembling this one:
If so, next time it occurs click Report...
Before you send it to Apple, copy the text of the report. Paste it in a reply. Remove or obscure any personal information, should it appear.
If problems continues to occur please determine if they also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

    Help???

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic log under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List   from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the panic report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

I have tried to download a movie via iTunes. Every time the download nears the end, it stops and restarts from the beginning. This has happened 5 times. How can I clear the download or solve this?

If it is a HD movie, it may not be enough. The iPad also need working space.
Try download to iTune (computer) and "Move" to iPad.

A Safe Mode boot might help ..
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
    See if the problem persists.

  • After upgrading, videos randomly stop and restart.

Since upgrading to iTunes 10 purchased videos of TV shows randomly stop and restart. I've had these videos for years and never had a problem, but now every time I watch an episode it sill get around 5 minutes in and spontaneously start the episode over. Anyone else having these problems?

    Hi Fabrizio,
why do you want to reboot your server every sunday?????
If you reboot your SAP this often, you'll have performance problems every Monday. All
of your SAP internal Buffers must be filled again after an reboot. If your DB is on the
same Host, also your DB Buffer is empty.
If this is an productive System, i highly recommend you that you not reboot your SAP System this often....
(By side, thats the difference between an *nix and an Windows System.).
What is the reason for doing that?

  • Macbook pro 15 inch can't shutdown and restart normally

My macbook pro 15 inch can't shutdown and restart. I reinstalled the system but the problem still had.what's can i do?
    Many thanks

Shutdown the machine until you can take it to a Apple repair/store and get a new adapter or contact the person you might have switched it with.
Your document isn't worth a few thousand dollar machine, use something else to finish it.

  • Computer randomly crashing and restarting.

I recently upgraded my 2010 Macbook Pro to Mountain Lion OSX. Ever since I upgraded my computer has been randomly crashing and restarting itself. I have looked online for many solutions. I have tried editing settings in system prefereneces, a hard drive repair, a fresh instal of the operating system, and even bringing the laptop into a local apple store. They did some diagnostic checks and a hard drive repair and sent me on my way. Even after all this it is still randomly crashing and restarting itself.
The issue most often happens after being in sleep mode for a little while, atlhough it still occurs randomly throughout the day.I will bring it out of sleep mode and it will restart itself in the next minute or so.
I copied a crash report since I have seen many people posting them here. I hope that you guys can help me identify the problem and fix it. I need to use this computer for school and I have many urgent projects coming up. I am covered under apple care, so a part replacement is not an issue. Any insight into the issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - Andy

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution.
Most likely, the logic board will be replaced. Sometimes the replacement is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.

  • Elgato video to USB has become unreliable after shutdowns and restarts

I have Yosemite 10.10 on an early 2009 iMac, and an Elgato Video capture device with latest software (1.1.5)
The messages "Device could not be initialized" and also "Please connect your Elgato Video capture hardware to any USB 2.0 port" come up after I have had a shutdown and restart.
For 2 or 3 years i have operated this system with no trouble, but as the iMac software became upgraded, and also the Elgato S/W upgraded, the problem has come up, so now I am reluctant to shut down.  However, there are times it must be, such as when the power company shuts service down for maintenance - happens a lot lately.  I have tried different ports, and done the unplug and replug routine, but it takes dozens or even hundreds of attempts until one time it works.  then i have to be sure not to "quit" after a recording session, or the problem comes up all over again. Also I tried using a USB hub, with no success.  Also, I have tried to reset of the USB bus routine (Command-Option-P and R keys during startup) with no success.

Get rid of CleanMyMac and DivX. Add much more RAM. You don't have nearly enough for all that you are trying to load.

    Hello Eduardo
It sounds like an issue with the RAM on your MacBook Pro. The idea is to see if you can reseat the RAM and if you cannot, then you would need to talk to an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for additional support.

  • Facetime auto shutdown and restart

After using FaceTime on my ipad mini and iphone 5 for 3 - 5 mins, the device will shutdown and restart back or turn to blue screen then restart back. I try to reboot using the home plus sleep button and reset network setting, but the result still the same

    Try this:
    1. Close all inactive apps. Double-click the Home button and hold apps in the Task Bar down until they all wiggle then tap the minus sign to close apps. Tap the home button to return to Home screen.
    2. Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home button down until you see the Apple Logo.
