Random Shutdowns (Driving me crazy)

After owning my MacBook for about a month, just 2 days ago, my MacBook randomly shutdown right after I booted it up. Then when I went to power up again, it immediately shutdown after the ding start-up noise.
The shutdowns have gotten more frequent and sometimes I have to try about 3 power ups in order for it to stay on.
Just a note (but I don't think it's related) I installed Windows XP through Bootcamp yesterday, however the shutdowns had already been occuring a day or two BEFORE I installed it.
I am using upgraded RAM (2x512mb), however it's the RAM that Apple provided me with, and therefore I don't have the stock 512mb original RAM. It was already upgraded the day I got it.
Other than those two significant changes to my MacBook, nothing else is different.
Again, note that these shutdowns have occured after owning my MacBook for about a month. (I bought it at the end of July).

contact apple care. this is a relatively common problem. Either go to an apple store or send in your macbook and they'll fix it. It took them about two days to fix mine and I've had it back about a month now with no problems.

  • IPod will pause randomly!  Driving me crazy!!!

    Can anyone help me??
I recently bought a new 60GB video iPod and since i can remember, it has been pausing on its own when i play a song. this does not happen all of the time and it is not because i am accidentally hitting pause in my pocket or anything (i have tested it by just holding it in my hand). at random times it will just pause like every 4 seconds or so a couple of times and then be fine for several minutes until it starts up again. does anyone know what this may be and if there is anything i can do to fix it???

yeh ive got a video 60gb and i also get the problem but for me it only happens wen i watch a video.
ive test the microphone jack, because theres some auto pause function.
its really frustrating but wat in pauses i will have to fastfoward to the point it gets unpaused. if i let it sit there paused it will become unpaused but without any sound :S

  • When I download music into Itunes and move songs into playlists, Itunes has twice randomly deleted all recently added songs from the playlists they have been added to.  It is driving me crazy.  Has anyone else had this problem?

When I download music into Itunes on my PC, every song is transferred into a specific playlist.  Twice now when I have opened up Itunes, all the recent songs that have been moved into playlists have been deleted by Itunes.  I now have to go back and figure out which songs are missing and re-add them.  It is driving me crazy. I have 10,000 songs and now have no idea which ones are missing and which ones have been retained.
Please help.  Does anyone else have this problem?

    Hi TRuss08,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like songs are missing from iTunes on your PC, and need to be re-added. I know that can be a frustrating situation.

  • To Everyone with Random Shutdowns! (Solved! REALLY!)

    Hey all,
I had posted about a week back about my Macbook (Core duo white, late 2006), it was having the same symptoms as some of the others with the known random shutdown syndrome (RSS). Like many others I had thought it was the end of my macbook and the logicboard needed replacing because that is what the 'genius' people do, but I was still wondering what would cause it. It would randomly shut off! (or so I thought) I'd be typing in Safari, watching a youtube video, and even playing games, it would just shut off and I could hear the hard drive spin down. I'd restart and it would do it again sometimes right away, sometimes hours later.
This got me to thinking (like others have said) that it must be an issue with over heating. To test my theory I backed up my HD, and tried to reinstall Snow Leopard after zeroing the HD (as a fresh install). During the install process the Macbook's fan started to get loud and then it happened, it died again! So, this proved to me that it is NOT a software/OS issue at all, which means the said efforts in other posts of changing screen saver and energy saver settings had nothing to do with the cause! Aha moment!
I thought to myself... something is making it shutdown, obviously, and has to do with too much heat as the fan was going crazy even while reinstalling the OS. After reading many posts on different support forums I came accross the possibility that it could be the heatsink and/or sensor that is attached to it. I also found out that this "RSS" only applies to the non-unibody, core duo, and core 2 duo macbooks... you know what that means?
These models are the only ones with the shared memory and GPU on the same heatsink! GAH! A possible solution presents itself? To make a long post even longer... I removed the keyboard, carefully unscrewed the heatsink and fan and what did I see? Cracked and dried out thermal paste on the CPU AND GPU, they are both under the same heatsink after all, this was bad, really bad.
Luckily I had some Arctic Silver thermal paste in a tube from years ago when I upgraded my PowerMac CPU. Using some rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth I removed the crud on the heatsink, processor, and GPU (I might add that there was way too much paste on there in the first place). I waited an extra few minutes to make sure the alcohol evaporated, and then I applied a small (dime sized) amount of thermal past directly onto the two chips, I aligned the heatsink carefully and gave it a very small gentle push down onto the chips, reattached the sensor wire to the mainboard, and screwed the heatsink back in.
After putting the keyboard back on and making sure all screws were in... I immediately turned on the laptop and reinstalled the OS. The OS install took approximately 10 mintues! (crazy!) The last time I did that it took over 30 mins to install! I was stunned!
After the OS installed I let the computer idle and shut down, I let it sit for about an hour to allow the paste to contract as it cooled. After starting up again I immediately downloaded Temperature Monitor and installed it (I did have it running when my mac had RSS by the way), here are the results to prove my theory:
    My Macbook with RSS:
    CPU1 and CPU2 Idle temp - 114 degrees (F)
    Heatsink temp - 128 degrees (F)
Approximate over heating temp - 184 degrees (F) (causing the heatsink sensor to shutdown the laptop)
My Macbook with new high quality thermal paste:
    Idle temp of CPU1, CPU2, and GPU - 77 degrees (F)
    Heatsink temp - 84 degrees (F)
Running temp with adobe CS4, youtube, and typing this message - 103 degrees (F)
Pretty amazing if you ask me!
Before I applied the thermal paste my Macbook took at least a minute to start up with a fresh OS install, now it only takes about 15 seconds! I have not heard the fan spin up and go crazy since! And I can't even explain to you how much fast it is now!
This does prove that Random shutdown syndrome (RSS) is caused ONLY by your GPU over heating due to old thermal paste between the chips and heatsink! A design flaw by Apple? probably not because thermal paste will crack and dry over time.
This also proves that energy conversion to data in the chips can decrease because of over heating, causing the computer performance to dramatically drop!
So before you take your out-of-warranty macbook to Apple or a repair shop, see what your internal temp readings are and try to replicate the problem with over heating your CPU/GPU! This was a 10 minute fix! I am still amazed at how much faster everything is, and haven't had a random shutdown since! I hope this helps alot of people that think they are out of luck and have to pay to get it fixed!
    - Cory -

I too have this problem as well and it has been getting worse lately, I don't know what to do anymore. Here is a little info about my macbookPro. I have the late 2008 unibody model, i bought it in late 2009 Refurbished from Apple. Recently my mac has been turning off out of nowhere. I may be doing something and all of a sudden it just shuts off, it usually happens faster when i start to open up more programs like Photoshop or Final Cut Pro. My mac is out of warranty now and i dont know how much apple is going to charge me to fix it. i mean they want 50 bucks just to talk to them on the phone (ridiculous if you ask me)!.

  • Macbook in repair for kernal panics and random shutdowns.....

It's been exactly one week since I sent in my macbook for random shutdowns. I called today to check on the status and they told me it was on hold because they needed more info from me as they can not replicate the problem. This thing was shutting down on me 3-4 times a day without warning. I gave them all kinds of suggestions, ie: check logic board, power management system, panic logs, etc. Don't these techs know how to troubleshoot? My biggest fear is that they won't find the problem and they'll send my defective Macbook back to me. What are my options then? It was bought for me by a friend in Denver who brought it down to Albuquerque for me (500 miles away) so returning it to a store is not an option. I know other people are having this problem so I know I'm not crazy and delusional. I don't want to be stuck with a defective computer but my 2 week grace period is over. What can I do?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Here's an update on my repair. It's been 2 weeks and they finally found the problem to be a bad logic board. They said it was on hold for repair to replace the board and didn't specify a return time. I expressed a concern with having a month old computer that has already been in for a major repair. After some polite but concerned dialouge between myself and a product specialist, she offered me a new one. I accepted the offer gladly. She even asked black or white? My original was white. So chalk one up for Apple customer support. They seems like they're out to make things right with their customers. You just have to remain calm and patient.

  • Network Manager driving me crazy (3 issues)

Hey guys I'm new here, hope you can help me
    nm-applet is driving me crazy!
First issue: when I boot nm-applet doesn't appear in my tint2 eventhough I'm connected. This don't appear all the time, it's random. I have to kill it and restart it to be able to see it.
I use openbox and I have this in .config/openbox/autostart
    (sleep 3 && /usr/bin/nm-applet --sm-disable) &
    Second issue:
I selected the save option for the password of my vpn but it won't save it... Or wait, yes it will.. But not all the time. It asks me for the pass sometimes, and sometimes not
    Third issue:
I thicked the "automatically connect to vpn for this connection" but guess what... It won't
Any idea about how to troubleshot this. I'm seriously considering pacman -R network-manager and pacman -S something else
    Thank you
Last edited by Truc (2014-03-06 21:17:51)

1st issue: run nm-applet from the command line (take it out of openbox's start file wherever that is) after you log in to see what's going on.
2nd issue: do you have gnome-keyring installed? I believe it should be started with by networkmanager when it's needed, but you may need to figure out how to start it on your own. I don't know how.
3rd issue: I believe the automatic connection to vpn on a specific network is triggered by networkmanager-dispatcher which is just part of the networkmanager package, but is its own separate service. When you enable/start NetworkManager via systemctl, it should enable/start 3 services - the dispatcher is one of them. Do you have that running?
I may be wrong about some of this; it's been a while since i've used NetworkManager.

  • MacBook 3x went to service center, still random shutdown, what to do next?

Hi! Mine is week 17, and mainboard already replaced for 3 times. The last one they replaced the battery also.
There is no Apple Center in here, I deliver it to the local authorized Apple service.
I just got my 3rd replacement yesterday, and I noticed from the first place that it got blank gray screen on startup & can't sleep using the Energy Saver. But I waited long enough for the repairement, so I decided to take it home anyway. At home, I did the commandopt+pr and reinstall it back to 10.4.6 using the equiped cd. But still it can't sleep using Energy Saver..
But the blank gray screen problem is gone.
Today I calibrate (since they replaced the battery with brand new one), after the process done (5 hours sleep, zero battery), I plugged the magsafe and I heard looping click sound, and it went random shutdown again!
And it goes shutdown on: yes dev null
I just do the commandopt+pr, and the yes dev null havn't invoked the shutdown. But from my previous shutdown experiences, it will go crazy random shutdown in about 3 days ahead from now.
So what to do next? going to the authorized service again?
    I'm sick and tired now.
Also the outer body case is suffers little scratches, and it's getting mucher and mucher everytime I got it back from repairement.
Oh dear God do help me! All I want is for my money back, at least a new replacement for my MacBook.
And they said Apple wouldn't allow it.

Since you're not actually turning it in to Apple for repair, I wonder if the repair shop that's doing the work knows what they're doing. Since you've had the logic board replaced three times, that's pobably not the solution. I had the random shutdowns and verticle lines on the display, and Apple replaced my heatsink and then erased the HD and re-installed to factory settings, 10.4.6. I then migrated my data from my backup HD, updated OS to 10.4.7, and installed the SMC firmware update. No problems since then.
Many other users have had their logic board replaced more than once only to continue having the problems. Some have had logic board replaced once and then no longer have problems. Others have had other parts replaced, such as in my case and have had no problems.
Apparently each MacBook has to be diagnosed individually to find the problem.

  • Wireless internet keeps dropping, its driving me crazy

Ok here is the story many might have heard before. My macbook pro will randomly drop the internet connection. it will still show full bars of service but wont go anywhere. I use the latest version of firefox and the issue pops up with safari also. It happens at home and anywhere i use the internet. I was at a coffee shop and it drops randomly, at my dads house so the same thing. Now if I use my pc in any of these places the internet is flawless never drops. I want to retire my pc but am forced to use it since I can't get the internet to work properly. I have sent out the macbook pro under applecare and they said they found the problem and replaced the airport on it. I got it home worked great for awhile and now the problem is back at its regular frequency. It's driving me crazy as I even have an old macbook in the house and it works great. Does anyone have a solution as I'm ripping my hair out and I don't wanna have to send my macbook pro out again. Please help!

Your personal details show that you are using 10.2.x - is this correct, if not then update your personal details? If you are using 10.5.x then you can try these simple maintenance procedures:
Repair Permissions - /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app. Start Disk Utility, select your HD and click on Repair Permissions. When finished, quit Disk Utility and then restart your computer.
Reset PRAM - hold down Option-Command-P-R keys when starting until you hear the startup chime a 2nd time.
Safe Mode Startup - hold down the Shift-key at startup until you see the login screen. When logged-in, then go to System Preferences/Network/AirPort
    - click on the 'Network Name:' roll-button, select 'Join Other Network...', enter 'Network Name and select the security type you are using, and finally, enter your Password and click 'Join'.
    - click on 'Advanced', TCP/IP and confirm that 'Configure IPv4:' is set to 'Using DHCP', click 'OK'.
    - click the 'Apply' button and exit System Preferences.
Also, look in System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items. With a clean system you will see AirPort Base Station Agent and iTunesHelper in here. Other users have found RealPlayer Updater in here and removed it (- sign), and this stopped the network drops after restarting.
These Login Items are located at ~/Library/LaunchAgents/. If you don't want to lose your login items then move them to the Desktop and archive them. Then delete the originals - restart and see if it helps.

  • How to remove Adware that is driving me crazy?

I downloaded a movie player and ended up with some Adware that is driving me crazy!  It opens a new tab with a random advertisement whenever I click on a 'submit' button or some other link.  It's been happening on sites that did not normally exhibit this behavior in the past.  The ads range from Mackeeper pro 2.0 to Sexy Latina girls.  Any ideas on what could be causing this and how to remove it?  I'm using Safari 8.0 with Yosemite.

Yes, you have accidentally installed some sort of adware. The fastest, most effective way to identify and optionally remove all currently known adware is by using AdwareMedic, developed by thomas_r. this Forum's malware guru, owner of TheSafeMac and a colleague of mine.
If it turns out to be the Downlite adware, then they have managed to block your access to that site and you will need to use an alternate technique as described in About the Downlite adware.
To understand why this happened an how to avoid such things in the future read John Galt's How to install adware.

  • Spinning beach ball, driving me crazy

I have been running Safari fine in all my machines until last week. I am trying to remember what I put on the computer before the problem, Dragon diction was just updated and for some odd reason I was asked to update flash and did, but I was running the right version. Since then I dumped flash and reloaded it.
    Problem:
No reason but all of a sudden when calling any random page I get a spinning beachball. Sometimes after ten to 20 seconds it recovers but in most case I have to do a force quit and start over. Have no issues with Firefox or Camino. But this problem is driving me crazy. Help
Have a new Power Mac 2.66 with 4GB. Running 10.6.4 and running Safari 5.2
    Thanks

    HI...
If you didn't repair permissions after updating Flash, that may help.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Apple Service - how do you prove RANDOM shutdowns ?

    Hello,
My macbook has random shutdowns, they occur about 4 times a week. I use the machine for work. I called Apple technical support, they gave me a case number, and I took it into service.
Apparently the computer cannot be fixed until the technician sees the shut down issue for themselves ! They had it for 2.5 days, it didn't shut down so I took it home (I need the machine). Sure enough, 2 days more of me using it and is shutting down again.
Who in their right mind is FAKING their shutdown issue to get the identical logic board swapped in ?? What would be the point of this ? Why don't they just believe people are not crazy and replace the mother boards ?
Am I supposed to camp in the store praying for a shutdown so they can see it ?
    Ridiculous. Simply ridiculous.

That's very interesting coooldoc. I tried it on my
MacBook just for kicks. When I entered the commands
it did indeed max out the processors. I watched my
iPulse peg both processors to 99-100% but my fans
    never did kick in.
When running "yes", your fan should start revving up to full speed after about 1-2 minutes. When you terminate the process, they should stay running for 1-2 minutes and slowly wind down. Your temps are to high also. Mine only get up in the 60c range when running "yes."
If you don't get that corrected, I believe you will develop SD sooner or later. Did you install the firmware update?

  • Random shutdown and wouldn't start up

My macbook is driving me crazy. Each time it is displaying a different symptom. It will randomly shut down or suddenly display a black screen or strip patterns on the screen. And then, sometimes it will remain shutting down, sometimes it will repeat the hardware sound when you boot your computer. After I force shutting down the computer by holding the power key and reboot the computer, sometimes it will start as normal, sometimes it wouldn't start up and display a black screen, or repeat the sound. And if I move it, it will recover sometimes. And when it's normal, it passes the hardware test, and when it's not normal, it cannot run the hardware test at all or run half of it and shut down. Today, it displays a new symptom, when start up, it beeps three times, stop, then beep three times again. The LED flashes with it. When I restart, it freezes at the gray/blueish screen. Help~~ Thanks.

Yes, i tottaly agree with you, at the only difference that i do not have so meny problems that you have...
But i can compare to my previous Ibook some good stuffs and very bad stuffs:
The only worth thing i had previously with my Ibook its that he was VERY slow.. But every thing else was OK.. never Bugg, never Crash, very Strong body... All good!!..
Now i have a reverse problem: My BlackBook is a **** Fast Performing Machine, but is also its DAMNED instable and fragile and Bugged...
For me the reasons are a group of incompatible things: INTEL shipset not adapted to Leopard (also Tiger) and bad hardware quality problems...
I'm a Pionneer on Apple Macintosh since 1985.
a little history reminder: Macs in order was made at the begining:
    1) In copertino,
    2) Then In Irland (for european people like me)
    3) Check republic (if my memory is good)
    4) and now in china... NO COMMENTS!!
I know.. price are less than before for more speed, but the rest is verry, verry poor compare to previously quality...
Then if you have paid 1000 dollars for your Macbook and you have so many problems, its normal This WASNT Apple politics at the begining because the customers was PROS in PROS activity,
Now Apple sells Iphone, Ipods and Macbooks at Mister-everybody in the world who buy Apple for the name and that are not so exigent for quality like i am!!
If you buy first quality shoes from known factory, your got the same problem...
Now, you can try to use a program that fix some problems, it calls OnyX. (read carefully introductions)

  • Macbook problems, hard drive crash, random shutdown, freezes

I bought my macbook used a few months ago, and it worked flawlessly until about 3 weeks ago. The system started freezing and not booting (getting folder icon instead of apple at startup). I ran drive setup and tried to repair the drive, but this did not fix the problem. DiskWarrior also could not fix it. I pulled the drive and installed a new hard drive, as I wanted a larger capacity anyways. All my problems appeared fixed for about two weeks, then similar problems began occurring. I backed up all the files I needed to an external firewire drive and attempted to reformat the new internal drive. Drive Setup says it can not reformat the drive - can't mount it and if it does, the drive disappears while in the process of formatting. I pulled the new drive and am having it replaced under warranty. I am using the firewire drive to run my computer, and this seemed to work fine for a day or two until the computer just started shutting down with no warning. Everything goes black, including the little light on the front of the computer. I have to hold down the power button for 10 seconds before it lets me start the computer back up. I had read this may be a memory issue, so I ran memtest and it says the memory is fine (I need to do it in single user mode still, however). I also tried pulling both sticks of ram. They are both 1GB crucial memory. I put each stick in by itself and tried it in both slots and was able to reproduce the shutdown issue with any ram configuration of either stick.
After all this, I realized the firewire drive was only running 10.5, so I updated all the software through software update, and it is now running 10.5.2. It seems to be working better as I have not experienced a random shutdown yet, but I'm anticipating it may start back up soon. Today, however I experienced a different problem - the screen froze on me and the only way to get anything to happen was to force a shutdown with them power button. It's restarted and seems to be working fine again for now.
I've run some logs and here's some things I've found:
When the latest freeze happened, I got this repeated over 100 times:
    Apr 29 11:04:31 jon-turners-macbook quicklookd[536]: CGContextClosePath: no current point.
    I've also seen this:
    Apr 29 11:18:19 jon-turners-macbook kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: 3
    Apr 29 11:18:19 jon-turners-macbook kernel[0]: GFX0: family specific matching fails
Apr 25 19:19:50 localhost kernel[0]: hi mem tramps at 0xffe00000
Should there be anything else I can check? I would run Apple Hardware Utilities, but I don't have the original disks, just the Leopard installer. I have Disk Warrior, but it seems strange this would happen with multiple systems and drives. I'd like to get Techtool Pro, but haven't had the money/time to order it yet.

    Thanks for the replies!
Yeah, I think it's the HDD. I was just worried that the RAM was bad and corrupted the HDD or something, but given the symptoms I think you guys are right. Ordered a 7200RPM 320GB HDD off Amazon Prime...will be here tomorrow
I'll post how it goes after I finish installing it. I'm backing up as I type.
I wonder if I can fix the ir port and the sleep indicator light when I install the hard-drive. The sleep indicator light never turns off. It stays on as long as my computer is on, only turns off when I shut it down.
