Random shutdowns X99S SLI Plus, ms-7885

Hello,
I'm trying to narrow down some random shutdowns. These seemed to be completely random and could happen with the computer idling. The computer just shutdowns and reboots. Nothing in the log, no BSOD. I have tried to trigger the problem by running CPU and GPU stresstests without success.
Until wither 3 came out. With witcher 3 the problem is 100% reproducible. Start witcher 3 => shutdown.
I can play other games for hours without any problems.
Can someone give a hint on how to find the problem?
/Tommy
Board: X99S SLI Plus
Bios: 1.8
VGA:   Gainward titan X
PSU:   Corsair RM750, 750W PSU ATX 12V V2.4, 80 Plus Gold, Modular, 4x 6+2-pin PC
CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K, Socket-LGA2011-3
MEM: Crucial DDR4 Ballistix Sport 32GB (8GBx4), 2400MHz (PC4-19200) CL16 SR x8 Unbuff
HDD: HyperX Predator SSD 240GB M.2 PCIe
COOLER: Cooler Master Seidon 120V v2 CPU
OC: none
OS: Windows 8.1

Some updates...
Tried to run with only two memory sticks, no problem with that. Even if I switch one it works. But with three it crashes after I exit witcher 3. Wierd since I can play the game without problem.
Ran some memtests one only one stick in. Only got errors in the "hammer test" which I guess is ok.
Put all four memories in again and ran memtest over the night. It ran one pass and after that the comp shut down and rebooted.
Downclocked memory to 1333 and ran 4 passes memtest without any crash. Some hammer test errors only.
I'm now trying to run at 2200 and it seems fine. I can play witcher and exit without any crash.
Is it the memory or the MB? Or just a bad combo?

  • MSI x99 SLI Plus Unstable

I just finished building my new PC with the following specs:
    MSI x99 SLI Plus
    I7-5820K
    16GB Corsair LPX 2666-15 Ram
    Evga GTX 980 SC
    Evga G2 SN 850W
I have been experiencing system instability. I updated the bios to the  latest 1.3 firmware. XMP Profile 1 enabled.
My PC randomly freezes unable to recognize keyboard or mouse inputs. I must hard reset at which time it reboots normally.
I ran Memtest86+ & it returned 8 errors during the first pass on test 6. Memtest86+ would also freeze during testing. I subsequently ran Windows Memory Test for 10 passes with no errors or freezes. I ran Memtest86 with all 12 logical cores in parallel for 25 passes with no errors or freezes. I reran Memtest86+ and have not been able to replicate the errors or freezing.
Today the PC froze & rebooted on its own. It was as if the power was being tripped as it would die turn on die turn on and then finally booted to a blank screen. The strangest part was that the on-board motherboard reset wouldn't work. I pressed the switch and nothing happened. I was able to reset the PC via the front panel switch. When the PC rebooted it displayed an error message about an overclock instability. I HAVE NEVER OVERCLOCKED the CPU! The only change to the bios was enabling XMP. The problem is very random and intermittent. Is it the Motherboard or RAM?

I upgraded my PC  a month ago with this bundle
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-023-OG&groupid=2833&catid=2512
which has the same MB/CPU combo and have been experiencing similar problems regarding stability. I've updated the BIOS to 1.3 and have run the Windows memory test without error.
I've tried several OC methods - the Overclockers UK setting, OC Genie and my own modest OC which involved just changing the CPU ratio to 38.
The Overclockers OC has never run successfully while the other two seem to run for one session OK but when I switch off then restart I get the 'Overclock instability' message.
It seems to run OK at the default setting though booting up can sometimes be problematic with it freezing intermittently at the MSI Logo page or at the Windows screen just before the animated logo starts.
Resetting then either solves the problem or produces the Windows error screen and selecting  'Start Windows normally' solves the problem.
BIOS B which I have never updated seems to run without issue.
I'm reaching the conclusion that this MB is inherently unstable at anything other than default settings.

  • MSI X99S SLI PLUS and XP941 - Booting, but very erratic behavior

I finally got my XP941 to boot in my X99S SLI PLUS using the beta BIOS. I Still can't see it listed as a drive in the system settings, but Windows 8 install sees it just fine, and I can see the "Windows Boot Manager" option available to boot from. Windows is booting just fine now, however it will  freeze up for about 3 seconds about every 10 seconds. I used CrystalDiskMark and found that speeds were over 1000MB as expected for sequential reads, but 4KQD32 reads were absolutely abysmal. I can't remember the exact number, but it was around .012 I've seen other reviews of the XP941 showing much higher speeds than this. I think the slow random read performance is causing the machine to lockup and have erratic behavior.
Does anybody have any ideas? or can anyone confirm that their SLI Plus is running this m.2 ssd just fine?
Another note is that I am only using 1 4GB Single Dimm of memory until my real memory kit arrives. Would running just a single dimm cause this?

Hello cbutters, I have the same configuration and I cannot manage to have the XP941 working (MZHPU256HCGL-00000).
The win8.1 setup does see it but after copying the files and rebooting it won't start.
What bios version do you use ? Can you indicate the specific settings you modified in the bios to have it working ?
    thanks
Using BIOS 136 from here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=183560.0
Using default BIOS settings to start from, then enabling windows 8/8.1 features and changing it to M.2 PCIe. I didn't touch the SATA Config after loading defaults. (I don't have any memory remapping settings available to me either).
Keep in mind that the device won't show up as a sata device, so don't even bother looking for it. You just have to start installing windows and trust that it will show up....  make sure after initially installing windows 8.1 and first reboot that your first boot option is "Windows Boot Manager". The install was really quick. See my youtube video here:

  • MSI X99S SLI Plus Persistant Boot Issue

    I upgraded my system 4 months ago with an X99S SLI Plus, i7 5820, GTX780, Avexir Platinum 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 RAM
The boot procedure has never been problem free and has now settled into the following sequence
    1 Press START
2 Freezes at MSI Logo or Windows start
    3 Press RESET
4 Windows REPAIR/START as NORMAL screen appears
    5 Select NORMAL
6 Windows starts and thereafter runs without problems
Usually steps 2 to 5 have to be repeated one or more times
Very occasionally it will boot straightaway
    I use W7 64 and have BIOS 1.5
All drivers are up to date
I use OC Genie which overclocks to 3.8. These problems occur whether OC Genie is enabled or not.
If I use SLEEP rather than SHUTDOWN it will restart without any problems.
Any assistance with this annoying problem would be appreciated.
PS Not sure if this is related, but the XMP option doesn't appear next to the OC Genie button though the RAM is described as XMP enabled

test it with 1 memory stick only, see if the issue will still exist when you do this

  • MSI X99S SLI Plus: Ethernet network disconnecting

I have an MSI X99S SLI Plus motherboard, and it works great except that my wired ethernet connection using the built in Intel adapter randomly disconnects.  This is on Windows 8.1 x64.
I have downloaded the latest drivers from Intel for the I218-V adapter (which are newer than those on the MSI site), have tried four different ethernet cables, and have disabled all power saving options in the adapter properties.  None of this works.  I'm about to give up and either RMA the motherboard or buy a PCIe ethernet adapter, but I'd love to see if anyone has advice.
Here's the disconnect events in the event viewer:
    Here's my driver version:
    Thanks for your help!

Yep, I tried rolling back the driver, as well as lots of other things:
    * Updating router firmware
    * Changing from auto negotiation to full duplex 1 Gig
    * Changing from auto mode to slave mode
    * Trying yet another ethernet cable
    * Lots of other suggestions from other forums...
Nothing worked.  I am going to RMA the motherboard.

  • MSI X99S SLI PLUS - What a Nightmare!!

    Hi There...
I have purchased the board X99S SLI PLUS.
But since day one, has been a real nightmare to work with it...
    I have a 5820k CPU and 32GB 8x4gb GSkill DDR4 2400mhz black.
I have flashed both bios to 1.20, to try to improve my situation to no avail...
I still have random boot problems, where the boot process stops on the "B4" reference on the lower corner right...
That happens when i do some restart on the OS for exemple...
Some times it hangs there and don´t go anywhere, other times it goes to the bios screen and do the POST.
When it hangs i have to press reset to restart the system and at that time it posts normally.
The other issues, are allready inside the bios....
Sometimes the bios hangs from nothing... like when i want to the Sensor monitors, or when i apply the settings...
Last time i think the bios went corrupt, because when i pressed reset the power light and hdd don´t light anymore and there is no action on the POST...
Have to switch to the Green BIOS, to get the system up again...
This is a very bad bios product, and i don´t really understand why theses products don´t have a better quality control.
Now i have a NON FUNCTION BIOS on the blue side, and a problematic bios on the green side.
Also... There is some memory problems on Windows 8.1, because i have allready have some random BSOD (more when i activate the XMS option).
Also there is some kind of problem with Samsung SSD Rapid Option and this board, because i also get some BSOD refering the Rapid process.
To reference, my system is NOT OVERCLOCKED, the cpu are at default and so is the memories...
    What can be done?
    - To recover the corrupted and failed blue side bios
    - To resolve the hangouts on boot sequence that stops at "B4"
    - To resolve the random lockups inside the bios (THAT corrupts the damm BIOS)
    - To improve reliability of this Board...
So far im not impressed with this product... I was expecting far more from MSI, after i have a good experience with my latest Z77 Gamming board.
I really need help here because i do need my system to work...
    Best Regards,
    Paulo Eduardo

OC is a bit of a nightmare, and it's not because of bad motherboard or CPU, it's just as it is. OC is usually never stable, and it's long way to find correct voltages, multiplier etc..

    Hi LPC
Would you happen to have anything connected to SATA port 5 or 6?
I cant get my motherboard to recognize HDDs in those two ports. 1-4 and 7-8 works fine. Just not 5-6.
Just wanna figure out if my board is defect or if this is a general issue.

  • MSI X99S SLI Plus - Can't find BIOS setting for enabling VT-x Virtualization

    Hello,
I am running the newest BIOS upgrade "MS-7885" released last month on my MSI X99S SLI Plus MB.
I have a Intel 5820K CPU that supports VT-x. I am NOT able to run my VMWare workstation VMs w/o this setting enabled.
I can't find it anywhere in the BIOS settings.
    Thanks for the help!

Also you might have to enable Advanced mode within OC section, so note this too.

  • 4-pin CPU-PWR connector on x99s SLI Plus

I'm attempting to install a Kraken x-61 cooler into my Corsair 780T case and the MSI X99S SLI Plus mobo.  One step says:
Connect the 3-pin power cable from the pump to the 4-pin CPU-PWR connector on the motherboard.
In the MSI x99S SLI Plus mobo and the manual (En-6) I can't find anything called CPU-PWR.  The 3-pin power cable fits into the 4-pin CPUFAN1 connector, but I don't know if that's the correct connection.  Could someone tell me where the CPU-PWR connector is on the MSI X99S SLI Plus motherboard?

it can be confusing to start with but you get used to it once you have done it a few times!
so yes connect it to the fan header for CPU as that line has a sense pin that will detect if your pump fails and will shut the computer off to prevent the CPU overheating to stop it breaking the processor! just take your time and anything your not sure of feel free to ask us!

  • X99S SLI Plus losing drive connectivity

My new X99S SLI Plus is losing connectivity to drives in SATA ports 5 & 6 (the two Sata Express ports).  They are ADATA SSDs.  The Intel RAID controller is in RAID mode, and I was trying to get 4 of these drives on ports 3-6 into a RAID5 array.
At first, the controller wouldn't even see the last two drives.  I've flashed to latest BIOS and latest Intel drivers and now it sees the drives, but the array constantly goes into rebuild.
    Any suggestions?
    Thx!

    Hello,
Did you try to change other cable to test? What does BIOS show under Settings--System Status, you see 2 of your SSD or all of them can be detected?

  • X99 Sli Plus WHEA 17 Errors.....Again

So I decided to go back to MSI and bought my second X99 Sli Plus board. Thinking that by installing the latest bios (5 revisions since I had the first X99 Sli Plus) that of the kinks would be worked out. Sure enough after updating everything and reinstalling all of the newest drivers. WHEA logger 17 errors are once again flooding my System logs.
Is there a fix for this?
I went to an x99 Asus board for a while, and had no issues. After searching around, both Evga and Asrock have fixed this with Bios's.
Please for the love of god someone tell me how to make this stop other than disabling event viewer. It's annoying to no end.

Hi I have the same whea logger 17 issue again and again on my MSI X99 SLI PLUS!
I have the latest nvidia installed, the bios is the version 1.8, the graphic card is galax gtx 980 SOC (factory overcolocked).
For now I found a solution which is not a real solution. If you force from the bios PCI-E to GEN2 (in place of auto or GEN3, that is PCI-E 3.0), the whea logger errors suddenly disappear.
That's why I think the problem is a bios problem. Maybe next bios update must be focused on solving the issue. It's like we are not able to run gen 3 cards in this way.
Please MSI fix this issue in the next bios update!!!!
(or If somebody know how to solve this issue in a different way please help us out)

  • X99 SLI PLUS VT-d

    Hi,
Was wondering if anyone knows if the X99S SLI PLUS motherboard and its BIOS supports VT-d?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Newest motherboards support pretty much everything, as long as the CPU allows for it. So check spec of the CPU you want to buy and it should tell you whats supported.
Though for 2011-3 I guess its supported even with cheapest CPU available for it

  • Can 1st and 3rd slots of X99S SLI Plus be used for SLI?

Can I use the 1st and 3rd full size PCI slots for SLI on the MSI Global X99S SLI PLUS mobo?
    Specs:
    * i7-5960X, intend to OC
    * Corsair H100i cooling
    * Corsair AX860i pu
    * 32gig 2400 DDR4
    * Samsung XP941 256GB Ultra M.2 PCIe
    * 2x Gigabyte GTX 970 Gaming, intend to OC
I'd like to not put the 970's on top of each other when there's so much extra space - will i get PCIx16 if I use the 1st and 3rd full size slots? Any downside at all?

yeah its a shame, makes for a bad design if using sli on air imho, one card runs 20-25c hotter than the other :(
if I had known of this design problem i would have gone for a different board :(
can't understand MSI's reason for this?
not looking forward to the summer heat coming, might have to try water cooling (if there is room) but even that looks a tight fit?
has anyone run wwater cooling on the MSI GTX970 Gaming on these boards?

  • Starting BIOS first time after build with X99S Sli plus

Is there a tutorial for the basic BIOS set up for this mobo?  I want to just set the computer to boot up tfrom my ssd.  Is there anything else I have to do in BIOS  before I load Windows 8.1?  I don't want to get into overclocking, just the basics.  Should I try to connect the computer to the internet right after I change the boot drive priority in BIOS? I'm thinking automatic updates to the BIOS via The Web.

If you don't need UEFI win8.1, then no need to change BIOS settings.

If you mean using Live Update to flash your bios, be sure you updated to the latest Live Update version, and before flash the bios, be sure the bios does for your motherboard

  • MSI X99 SLI Plus - Won't Post

    I've got:
    Motherboard: MSI X99 SLI Plus
    Processor: Intel Core i7-5820K
    Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4-2400
Power Supply: EVGA 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX
It's a new build and I can't get it to post. When I try to turn it on, a red LED located next to the 24 pin ATX power connector comes on and will not go off until I cut the power at the Power Supply. I can't find anything online concerning the red LED. Is it some overvoltage protection? An issue with the memory? I'm at a loss trying to diagnose this. Please see the images below:

    Hello.
I'm having the exact same issue.
My computer was running with no issues for over 1 month and today when i tried to start it this exact issue happened.
The lights on the rest of the motherboard are working (CMOS, Power, OC Genie) but it won't post.
I have tried to reset the CMOS, re-seated and tried various configurations for the RAM, tried both BIOS and OC Genie on and off and the issue remains.
Could this be a PSU issue? If so, would the remaining lights work?
Anyone else had this issue and how did you fix it?
    Thank you in advance!
