Random Spinning Noise, Hard Drive Failiure?
Lately I've been getting these odd spinning noises randomly when I use my laptop, it seems to be coming from the right side of the keyboard, I don't really know if its at the top or bottom, it seems like its in the middle. I'm not sure if its a hard drive failure because when I ran a disk utility test. It failed so I took it to apple, they ran tests but found no errors. When I got it back it the test failed but I was able to repair it and now it shows okay. So anyways, I recorded the sound with my iPhone's Voice Memo and it is sounds exactly how it is recorded.

I'd really appreciate if anyone can download and listen to the sound and tell me what might be wrong? Thanks

ITunes unnecessarily spinning up hard drives
Here is a feedback I just submitted to Apple. If you know of a solution, please share it. If you don't and are bothered by the same problem, please copy it and submit it as your own feedback.
Please prevent iTunes from spinning up hard drives when I merely browse my music library. Prior to iTunes 10.4, I would have to actually click on a song before iTunes would spin up the hard drive containing it. While this was undesirable, it's gotten worse in iTunes 10.4. Now with iTunes 10.4, merely selecting an artist or album causes iTunes to spin up the hard drive, presumably so it can load an album cover to display in its lower left corner, which is new behavior, as previous versions would leave this area empty until a song was selected.
Please note that it should never be necessary for iTunes to spin up a hard drive when merely browsing the library, because it has all the metadata and art cached in its own private database. Merely clicking on a song or reviewing metadata should not spin up a hard drive. Furthermore, iTunes doesn't even try to update itself when changes have been made to songs outside of iTunes, so it's doubly unnecessary to spin up the hard drive when merely browsing songs. Browsing the library should amount to browsing the database, which is located in my system on an SSD.
Please make iTunes spin up a hard drive only when it really needs to, such as when saving metadata changes or actually playing a song. The environment will thank you for being greener, and I will thank you for reducing wear and tear on my hard drives and helping me keep the noise level at a minimum.UPDATE: I've noticed that if I quit an application without closing its documents, and then open it again it restores all previous open documents. If I close the documents first (then quit the app) then there's nothing to restore, which seems to make things faster.
I wish things were a bit more obvious! -
Dynadock U3.0 - Spins up hard-drive after laptop put to sleep
Hi,
I have a Dynadock U3.0 and love it apart from a few small bugs.
1) After I put my laptop to sleep, the Dynadock USB light switches off and I hear my hard-drives spin down.
However, about 5 seconds later - only the USB 3.0 hard-drive spins back up.
I tried plugging the hard-drive directly into the laptop's USB 3.0 port and it spin-downs fine.
So, appears to be a problem in the Dynadock
2) Sometimes when I plug in a USB hard-drive, the Dynadock "disconects and then reconects".
Issue 2 is no major, but issue 1 is really annoying when I'm trying to sleep. I have to physically pull the power on the hard-drive.
I have updated my USB 3.0 drivers to the latest, and also the Dynadock to latest firmware from the Displaylink site.so, did a few more tests.
If USB 3.0 hard-drive plugged directly into laptop USB 3.0 port - it works fine
If USB 3.0 hard-drive plugged into Dynadock USB 2.0 port - it works fine
If USB 3.0 hard-drive plugged into Dynadock USB 3.0 port - no good - spins up 5-10seconds after spin-down.
So, currently making do having the drive plugged into the USB 2.0 port on the Dynadock.
If the issue isn't fixed, then I will buy a USB 3.0 hub and plug this into laptop. Then plug hard-drive and Dynadock into this so the hard-drive doesn't go through the Dynadock. -
I have a noisie hard drive is this bad?
My 2010 white MacBook's hard drive is making a rather loud
Spinning sound while using it. Is this ok? Does it mean
It is ready to die? Most likely. You should probably back up everything you have (there is a fantastic program called SuperDuper! that will make a complete clone of your drive, including settings), then either when the drive dies or when it drives you insane (whichever comes first), buy a new internal drive. If you used SuperDuper!, boot from whatever device you backed up your old drive on, and then clone the external drive onto your new internal drive and everything should work like a charm.

Spinning ball, hard drive, macbook pro
Dear Experts
I have mid 2009 Macbook pro (2.66 Ghz). I am frequently running into spinning ball that freezes my mac even for opening Safari, iPhoto etc. I am user of CPU demending softwares. Here is what I did till now
1. Free space on HDD is 78 GB (out of 320 GB HDD)
2. Ran Disk utility --> verified.
3. SMART status is OK.
4. Fixed all permissions.
5. Ran disk tool pro--> SMART status OK
6. Fixed bad alias
7. Removed all cache, junk, trash with CleanMyMac.
However, problems is persisted. I ran a bad sector check on disk tool pro and it shows all time that scan for bad sectors is failed while rest of the tests passed. I wonder whether my HDD is failing or what? I have already backed up on Time Machine.
Any experts has comments/suggestions? That will be of great help.
Thanks
SaiWhat you describe seems indicative of hard drive failure. You did yourself no favor, however, by running "CleanMyMac" which may have deleted some very important files.
I would recommend doing a full and complete reinstallation of everything. If you still have the 'beachballing' then I would try replacing the drive.

Imac / spinning ball hard drive gets stuck
Hi there,
I have an i-mac g-3, but up-graded it to mac osx 10.3 (and all the apple updates)
It now seems very, very slow.
1) It often gets into a right pickle, for no reason, and the ball just sits there spinning- the only solution is a cold (mains off) restart - it wont respond to anythng else, just spinns the ball.
2) it often sends the hard drive winding and realy gurgling away (not just free spinning) like its read/writing the hard drive - a LOT!
This then brings my mac to an almost go-slow, or just freezes me out with the spinning all again (see above)
these seem to be happening with frightning regularity now, but often without provocation (ie not even during a download, sometimes when its just sat there??)
any thoughts,, thanks,,Hi,
One thing that's not mentioned in Ferd II's links are the possiblity of bad blocks on your hard drive. They might develop over time, and can cause symptoms like what you're mentioning. To see if the problem might be bad blocks, you can open the Console application from your Utilites folder and look in the system.log.
You're looking for messages from the kernal that mention "I/O error" as the problem. The error will be on a line with a date and time, computer name, and then this:
kernel[0]: disk0s9: I/O errorThe numbers in the disk0s9 might be different, in particular the last one might not be "9".
If you do have these errors, you'll probably want to back up all your information right away, as it's a sign the drive might be failing.
You can use a program like TechTool Pro to do a surface scan and see for sure if there are any bad blocks. If there aren't many, they can be remapped by erasing the drive using the "Write Zeros" option in the Disk Utility. If there are too many, the drive can't remap them and will need to be replaced.
One final thing: just because the S.M.A.R.T. status is "Verified" doesn't mean there might not be a problem with the drive. On the other hand, if it says "About to Fail", believe it, and make sure you have a good backup of your data.

Is there a way in Mavericks to manually spin down a hard drive? I run my system, applications and store most of my data on a large SSD, but I have a 1TB HDD in the opitcal bay of my MacBook Pro. The HDD is not needed much, but it does spin at times more than needed. From an energy savings standpoint, I was wondering if there is a way in Mavericks or a widget to manually spin the drive down? Thanks!
Sorry, I meant to say the traditional platter 1TB HDD is in the standard Hard drive bay. I have the SSD in the optical bay.

Big whirring noise - hard drive?
Sometimes when I bump my iBook a little bit, it freezes and there's this really terrible whirring noise, I think it's the hard drive, but I'm not sure. It has also happened when closing the screen: instead of going to sleep, it will make the noise but not always freeze, and then I can just use it again.
Another thing that makes me think it might be the hard drive is that I was trying to listen to music while typing a paper yesterday, and iTunes kept skipping, like it wasn't reading the drive fast enough.
Thanks in advance for any help.It might be that you have too many things opened and is running at over 100%. The hard drive on my kids' iBooks whir when they are watching movies, typing papers and listening to music. It seems when there are over 5 programs open and running, there is slow performance and whirring occurs.

Crackling Noise Hard Drive or Speakers?
While listening to some music last night, I wondered if the low grade crackling noise I was hearing meant the speaker(s) were going bad in my G5 or if that is the death noise of a dying hard drive. Knock on some wood, but I've never had a hard drive go bad in 19 years of having macs. No other problems, just that noise. Which it is making even though I'm not playing music now (that's the scary part). If it is a hard drive, I'm worried how much backing up Time Machine actually does on my external drive...is it backing up the applications, too, or will I have to reinstall all those if the drive croaks? When I look on Time Machine, it looks like everything on my computer is there, including music & pictures. If you use Time Machine, can you restore it on an entirely different computer (meaning not the same size drive or OS)?
Could that be a “clicking” noise rather than “crackling”? It probably is your HD. I have never restored from Time Machine, but judging from some of the top users in these forums I don’t see it as the preferred method for back-up. Their preferences seem to run toward Carbon Copy Clone or Super Duper, both of which create a fully bootable back-up. I personally use Carbon Copy Cloner because of it’s boot capability which means that all your data & apps will be saved and you can start up from your external drive and continue to work until you replace your internal drive.

Random restarts after hard drive change!!
Hi guys, I have a Late 2009 15" MacBook Pro (Unibody) A1286 that recently had a hard drive change due to the stock one coming close to failure. After a couple hours of usage, It suddenly freezes (and if i'm playing audio, it sounds like a broken record for a second) and restarts and gets the "Your computer restarted because of a problem" message. When the desktop loads, It requests to send a report to apple and provides this message:

It was a brand-new hard drive, so there shouldn't be any issues!!! Any help or ideas ? The person I got the HD from suggested it's another issue such as the power adapter or motherboard, but It started after the swap.Back up all data, then remove the Norton/Symantec product by following the instructions on either of these pages:

Random file on hard drive, please help me find out what it is
Hi all,
I have had this file sitting on my hard drive, when you click and open from hard drive icon there is a file sitting there called mds-crash-state. If i try to delete it it says enter my user password, so ididnt thinking it could be important. Anyone able to shed some light on this and if i can actually delete it without killing my machine?Go and trash it. The 'mds-crash-state' file may be created if the Metadata Server crashed or was unexpectedly closed during the indexing process. The presence of this file can prevent Spotlight from indexing the volume in the future.

WRT610N with power saving spin down hard drive
Hi,
Has anyone used the WRT610N with a storage drive that auto spins down? I find the router works fine accessing the HDD until left idle when the HDD spins down. The next time I try to access the HDD and of course there's a lag as the drive spins back up, I get some type of freezing, usually the USB light on the router turns off, the HDD light stays on and the router loses connection the HDD.
Any help here???
Also, despite gigabit ethernet and 802.11n speeds, I get around 2 Mb/s speeds to the USB storage port. A little slow no???
Yes, I have the latest firmware.Connect your HDD directly to a computer and check if you face the same problem, I think there is a problem with your HDD...

How do I automatically spin down the hard drive to save power?
I have searched for this in the wiki and the forums, so if I've missed something, please point it out to me, but is there a way to have Arch automatically spin down hard drives and/or suspend the machine to ram to save power? I'm not really interested in the full suspend to disk because I don't think my BIOS will do a wake on lan, and I'm trying to run a home server here.
Anyway, I'm just looking for ways to save on my electricity usage. Any ideas? If the HD is just used for storage, hdparm is your friend. with hdparm -S you can set the timeout until the disk spins down.
If its a system disk hdparm will work too, but the HD will spin up after 2 secs (or less, depending on your HD) again because of the OS accessing the disk (logs, journal etc). Laptop-mode-tools works very well on laptops because it automatically sets the journal-rewrite time, file-write-cache size and the time when new data gets written to the disk. If you are not reading anything or anything thats not in the cache, it works very well - but thats on laptops. I tried using laptop-mode-tools on my desktop, but without luck (yes, it detected that i wasnt using a laptop).
You could try using cpudyn with the cpu-idling stuff disabled (option -i 0). I know it has a feature that spins down a specific HD after a certain amount of time. But i don't know for sure if cpudyn automatically remounts the HD, so that it caches all the write activity (like laptop-mode-tools).
Good luck. -
Hello,
Over the past two days, I've begun my MBP has been spinning the hard drive constantly. This has not happened previously. At first I thought it was the processor cooling fan that was always on, buut after reading these boards, I found that it was in fact the hard disk. Is it normal for the disk to always spin, it seems as though that would adversly effect batterylife.
Any input would be appreciated.
MBP: 183ghz 1gb Mac OS X (10.4.6)You should take a look at your software installation log, and see if you've installed anything on your machine around the time this began happening. You may also want to compare this to how you've been using the machine recently. Certain applications (torrent file transfer, music playback, debug logs to name a couple) will keep the disk spinning, regardless of your power saving features because disk access is required.
If you open up the activity monitor, you may want to check and see if you've got any particular application hitting the disk -- do you for example have this issue even when you haven't launched any apps?

Hard drive use in "Sleep"?
Ok. So I own a 3rd generation iPod and it's been giving me battery problems for the last few months. Every night I would leave it in it's base to charge and disconnect it and take it with me around town the next day. Even without using it, by around 2 in the afternoon if I tried to start it the Apple logo would come up and it would do it's typical boot thing and then show no battery power.
So my ipod was sitting on my desk tonight in "sleep" mode. Just chilling. I haven't used it all day. Then all the sudden I noticed it was making a noise. I held it up to my ear and I could hear the hard drive just spinning away and every few seconds it was followed by a small click.
Is there any particular reason my ipod is spinning its hard drive while its asleep? It's making other noises too and I swear I'm not crazy...You can check laptop-mode-tools for the various tunables they use to optimize disk usage and let it spindown as much as possible.
