Random streaks in windows!?

Hi Anyone!
I have an Intel iMac and recently it has been doing strange things with its graphics output. Seemingly randomly, horizontal streaks of one pixel wide and mostly dark colors show up in windows like Safari, iTunes, Mail, and just about everything else. Usually it is just one streak between 2 inches and all the way across the window. The streaks follow the window as I move them around, so I don't think it's a monitor problem. The only thing that coincides with the start of this problem was the installation of a OSX update 2 updates ago. It's not a constant problem and the streaks go away if I close the window and reopen. A more troubling thing is that sometimes, also randomly, the display goes black, and any sound output just does a broken record and the computer is unresponsive. Has anyone else seen these symptoms? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I solved the problem, I think. I set PM setings for hardware to Max in Bios(before Disabled) and keep APM in XP set to "never" , and no problem til now.The computer remains in full power.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." • Save image for web/devices - random streaks

I have no idea why, but sometimes when i save images for web It leaves random streaks across certain areas. It has nothing to do with transparency/gradients because i've used normal fills and it still does it. It's probably something stupid but i can't seem to figure it out.

Document DPI vs. Save for web vs. preview. Make sure to always work in 72 DPI and you'll have a lot less problems to get predictable results. Also use the align to pixel grid options to avoid semi-transparent gaps and edges, where applicable...

  • InDesign CS6 randomly crashes on Windows 8.1

I have installed InDesign CS6 on Windows 8.1 (for a while now).
But it keeps crashing at random moments.
It doesn't matter whether I am working on a document or the program is opened and idle in the taskbar, at some point it just says: "InDesign has stopped responding, click to close program" (not the exact error message, that one is in Dutch).
I have contacted Adobe support several times with this issue, they help me clear the Adobe cache folder.
But it still happens, even after clearing the cache folder.
    Thanks for your time.

There hasn't been a single file lost, because I know Windows and save after every edit.
It's a big annoyance I want to get rid off.
So please don't start the discussion whether I have time for random crashes or files losses, the answer is: NO.
But I also haven't got the time to sacrifice a working day to try and solve the crashing.
Rather provide me with possibilities I can enable/disable that you think might work.
Thank you , your help is appreciated!

  • Openbox randomly closes xterm windows

I just installed arch on my desktop computer after using it on my laptop for a few months and decided to install openbox as my wm.  Unfortunately, I'm running into an extremely strange bug.
When I open xterm from the openbox right-click menu, the window often disappears completely randomly, usually within the first few seconds after being opened.  There doesn't seem to be any logic behind when it disappears: it can be after one second like it can be after 15 seconds.  It will do it regardless of wether I'm typing and clicking.  If I leave it alone it sometimes just pops out of existence on its own.  If a window manages to last more than 30 seconds or so, then it "sticks" and won't go away.
I have no clue what could cause such strange (and infuriating...) behaviour.  Any ideas?
EDIT: Well, it will also close terminals randomly if I start them using xterm &.  Lovely.
By the way, no other program seems to be affected in this way.  Firefox runs just fine and doesn't randomly close on me.  It's only xterm.

Actually, I once had the exact same problem. My solution was to just install urxvt, which is an awesome terminal. Personally, I consider xterm as part of my basic "does my X work?" package. After that I don't use. Hence my suggestion is to just replace and ignore - like I do since at least a year now
I know, this isn't a real solution, but I never noticed again until you reminded me I just had this problem as well.

  • Programs randomly minimizing on windows 8.1

Hello would someone please let me know what the solution to this issue...?  The programs are randomly minimizing, word, excel, IE, on my widows 8.1 laptop.  It occurs in desktop mode and when I open word, excel from the 8.1 screen.  I have
disabled Aero Snap.  The threads on the previous posts have a lot of bickering etc.
    Thank you.

    Hello TAC325,
Have you made any changes before this issue?
If my understanding is right, all programs both desktop app and metro app will randomly minimize themselves. How about the Windows explorer and Control panel?
Do you mean all apps minimize at the same time or one app one time? Please share us a screenshot if you willing to.
Please take the following steps for troubleshooting:
    1. As this is a laptop, please check if the mouse flickering caused by the touchpad. Please update the touchpad driver to the last version from the manufacturer website and check if this issue still exists.
    2. Unplug the mouse and check if this issue still exists
    3. Run the Anti-virus software to scan malware.

  • Random Freezes in Windows XP

Replaced 3700+ San Diego with X2 4600+ two months ago; at the time had 1GB kit of Corsair XMS 3200XL 2-2-2-5 1T.  I had no problems whatsoever until I changed the cpu.  What happens now is the screen freezes; at first nothing used to respond, i.e mouse/keyboard/taskbar, icons etc.  Just lately, I can move the mouse round the screen but obviously can't do anything else.  This happens typically every 2-3 days but on occasions has gone 2 weeks without a freeze.  It can happen when idling; today for example I was attempting to move a file to a different folder.  Nothing occurs in Event Viewer at the time of the freeze, although I have a couple of explorer.exe errors at other times and a few IE & errors also.
CPU running at stock; memory running at 200 Mhz.
This is what I have done up to now:-
Changed memory to ones in signature - good excuse for an upgrade.  Both sets of memory, pass 12 hrs of memtest.
    Tried 3 different bioses.
Tried a fresh Windows install.  Since repaired it as well.
Cloned hard drive to another to eliminate possibility of hard drive error; both seagate hard drives pass seatools diagnostic tests.
Ran orthos, ATI Tool (to stress graphics) over 24 hrs with no errors.  Temps seem to within range; 30C idle/52 stressed approx for both cores.  Reseated cpu as well.  Graphics temp well within range; tried different graphics drivers and chipset drivers also.
Hard Drive is on sata 3; I have 1 and 2 disabled.  I've tried another sata cable as well.
Removed avg anti-virus, IE7, Logitech setpoint.exe software.  System is clean, all windows updates installed.
I've tried with Dual Core Optimiser installed and without; MS Hotfix installed and without.  Have amd X2 processor installed also.  Tried bumping up cpu vcore to 1.4v but no change.
I intend to swap out psu for an old enermax 465 I have lying around somewhere.  Would think psu would exhibit other strange behaviour but need to eliminate it as cause first.  Even tried tagan split and combined modes but problems persist.
If replacement psu does not work then I'm at a loss.  May have to replace cpu; maybe try another brand of hard drive; maybe replace the board.
    Appreciate any other pointers.

There have been quite a few reported cases in this forum of PS/2 ports going bad with freezing the usual result.  I had one in the office, on a K8N Neo4-F, just start suddenly freezing up after a random amount of time after power on - thought it might have been the mouse so changed it but no-go.  Since it was used by someone else, I couldn't experiment with it and had to just switch to the USB port.
Whether this next is associated with that problem or not is not clear but, a few months later I also had trouble with the keyboard on the same machine but, after seeing i8042 Event Log errors (can't set repeat speed or something like that) and having power on problems, I discovered that the keyboard connector was err, munged: the plastic key was broken and a couple of pins were a bit bent - some klutz messing with it when I was "not there".  Straightening the pins with very careful insertion and/or a different keyboard resolved the keyboard probs but I had to change the PSU... one of those things I'll never know: whether the bent pins, or the act of bending them on botched insertion, blew the PSU or maybe even the mouse port.  Anyway... check the PS/2 connector pins carefully.
    Thanks for the reply.
I am not using a PS/2 port.  My transmitter is usb powered.  Mouse/keyboard are wireless.
    @Grayone
Thanks for the link.  I thought I'd checked scan out but obviously not well enough!
Time to make the plunge I think.

  • I use tabbed browsing. Firefox randomly opens new windows with advertising. Pop-ups are disabled. How to fix?

I use Firefox with Windows 7. I use tabbed browsing, and the tabs show at the top of the page. At the bottom of the page, where the Firefox logo is displayed, Firefox will randomly open a second window with advertising. This is a Firefox issue because it says Firefox at the top of the new page. Pop-ups are disabled via Tools>Options>Content. Pop-ups also are disabled on the Verizon Security Suite.

    For possible causes see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Popups_not_blocked

  • Safari randomly opens new windows

Safari keeps opening new browser windows on its own at random times (not startup) when I'm using the computer. It doesn't matter what I'm doing - there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. For example, I could be playing WoW and get lag spikes that have nothing to do with the server or my ISP. If I close WoW or window it to check what is going on with my desktop, I find several  blank Safari windows open (I've found up to 8 of them at a time!). It doesn't matter if I'm using the internet or not, it does it anyway. I've gotten 3 of them just during typing up this question!
I've had this problem since I got my MacBook Pro (it was originally a display model from Fry's) a few years ago. However, when I was running 10.6, I was unable to uninstall Safari and just use Firefox instead. I just upgraded to 10.8 and it won't let me uninstall it - says Mountain Lion NEEDS it.
I've done everything I can think of - it's not my default browser; it's not listed as a startup item; I've run MacScan; cleared all history and cookies. Anyone have any suggestions?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Leave the machine running overnight in safe mode. Don't launch any applications. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Randomly opens new window to program files

When I open a new tab or at random times it will open a new window with 7 tabs to go to some site listed as Firefox program files. I ran a virus scan and found nothing so it must be something else

Instead of defaulting to my homepage, Safari opens to my last viewed page.  I cannot find a setting for this in Preferences.
Go to the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the General tab.

Make sure you have the correct url.
If you had the correct url, go to your Safari menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari
Select the top 5 buttons then click Reset.
    Restart your Mac, try Safari.

  • Tecra M11 - Random Crashes with Windows 7

We have a Toshiba Tecra M11 running Windows 7 which has a problem in which it randomly crashes, forcing the user to hard reboot it. When it crashes, the fans spin up, not sure if this means anything. We've tried many things to fix it.
At first we thought it may be overheating, which would explain the fan, but the laptop got through a 24 hour stress test absolutely fine with normal temperatures. The laptop also isn't necesarrily doing anything stressful when it crashes We also tried reinstalling some of the main drivers and also intalled the newest (2.60) BIOS but still the same problem.
It crashes up to 2 times a day, but can also go some days without crashing. It's a very strange problem and we'd very much appreciate a fix for it.
    Thanks
    George

I just posted this answer on another thread. However, for me, the following worked. The laptop was locking up at least once a day with no clear cause since I bought it.
I've been trying for the last few weeks to get a fix for this. However, I've removed the fingerprint reading software and disabled the fingerprint reader in device manager. This appears to have finally fixed the issue (fingers crossed, one week no crash). I'd also removed Toshiba reeltime and eco utilities but had less success. The various BIOS updates have not helped.
All the latest drivers were installed. I also rebuilt the machine and could not get a crash from it with the factory build though I didn't setup the fingerprint software. USB connections also seemed to have a bearing on stability, though everything has been fine since the fingerprint reader was crippled.
    Hope that helps.

  • Random Reboots in Windows XP SP1

Given the specs which I'm hopeing will show up on my signature, anyone have any guesses for why mine reboots at random too?
I ran quicktech pro on my machine and everything passed except the extended memory.  When I ran that other test using memtest86, it passed once but appeared to lock up (i had to hit the reset button).  I was told by a tech at spartantech.com that dual channel memory will test bad in quicktech but he said nothing about memtest86 (i didn't know about it at the time).  It has rebooted in musicmatch, windows media player, while burning cd's, etc.
I ran the test on the CPU, NPU, Timer x 100, RTC x 100, all DMA and RAM tests available.  Any input would be greatly appriecated.

list you ram timings.........Have you checked the systems event viewer for any clues what devices or module are cousing the shutdowns... try disabling the auto restart option in the Start up and Recovery options in the systems properties page........and it should write an event to the log.

  • Scroll down selects ithin a website randomly stop workings - Windows 7 and Firefox 18.0.1

When accessing a select box - for example a date, from a drop-down box, it becomes impossible to select. Also the minimise button stops working. This appears to be random and will be ok for a while and then suddenly stop! Any clues why?

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
Try to do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling a fresh copy of Firefox.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 18.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will also lose your personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

  • Blurry/pixelated icons at random in Finder windows 02 (Not Solving Yet)

Since the problem in the old topic (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2132399&start=0&tstart=0), I have started new one.
    the Problem is:
"I'm seeing a lot of blurry icons in the Finder, though, seemingly at random. I'll open a window and about half the icons will be essentially large versions of the 16x16 icon, rather than sharp icons at the appropriate size. Changing the icon size via the new slider just enlarges the blurry icon, it doesn't increase the resolution." (Eric Westby)
This is really the most disappointing non response issue I have ever seen by Apple. I hope from Apple to address this issue.
    Thanks.

Problem. I am experiencing problems with suddenly blurred custom Finder icons as well.
Trigger. So far as I can tell, this happened when Software Update ran on my computer this afternoon. If I recall correctly, it updated to the latest XCode and iTunes versions pushed out this week. When it was finished, it gave me the message, "Blah blah blah your installation has finished" with an Okay button. The Finder window with my film library was open and in full view with nice, not-blurry icons. I clicked Okay to dismiss Software Update and the instant I did that it quit the Finder, must have been to rebuild something that was edited during the installation. All the open windows went away, the Finder restarted and its windows reopened. Wouldn't you know it, every single icon I had edited in the last day or three, +but none of the others+, was a pixellated blob.
Details. This is a single folder with rips of my DVD collection made using Handbrake, one folder per film, for a total of about 400 folders.
For each folder, I locate an image of the theater poster using Google's image search and create an icon using that image. The process I use is to open the image in Preview, ensure it is 800 px tall or less, then Select All > Copy to the Clipboard. Then I go to the Finder and do a Get Info > Tab > Paste for the folder.
    Screenshot
My screenshot shows the sort of blurry pixellation I am getting, as seen on the icon for "Grand Central Murder (1942)" and "Graduate, The (1967) Nichols". All the rest look sharp and nice, they way they usually all do.
Guesses. The only thing I can think of is that as you paste custom icons, the Finder is just dropping that information in a cache somewhere. It will write it out properly if it gets the time, but if the system is always telling it "not now, I'm busy" it will put it off as a low priority task. If something else then tells the Finder to restart, all those changes are lost because the cache gets hosed down when the Finder reboots. It's only a guess, but it's the best I've got.
