Random strength in signals

I've been having my wireless router for about 6 months already, yet I've been encountering this odd problem for the past month. For 5+ months my GIGA-BYTE Wireless LAN card Status would be good(best status), and the signal strength would be at Excellent(5/5 bars) as well. But for some odd reason my signal strength for the past 2 weeks would just be Excellent during start up for about 2 minutes, then it would drop to low-good afterwards. Last week my friend had to go on my comp to transfer a few of my games onto a external HD that he brought into my house(I wasn't at home at the time). Being the tech-guy he is, when I came home(he left about a half an hour before I came home)my internet signal became it's original self =D(100% Excellent signal at all times, Wireless Status: Good). Just 2 days ago the horror came back, it's back to low-good signals as well as week-normal Wireless-card status. Is there anything I can do to fix this? And what in fact did my friend do to restore my signal strength? -By the way the "low signal strength, and the low-good wireless card status" speed is quite impressive, but it's not as near as fast as it's previous self. -My internet would disconnect a few times as well.

Check the adapter in any other computer & then see if it works or not ...
Also you can try upgrading the drivers of the adapter & observe the connection ....

At home I have two wifi networks , I try to use one of them depending on their strength of signal, can I not save  both their passwords on Apple TV , so that I can switch to one of the two wifi networks as required
Also the passwords are long and cumbersome to type every time on the apple  TV remote, what is the alternative if I cannot store them on the memory of the Apple TV

Is it possible that you are using the same password for the old O2 Study and newer O2 Apple Base Station networks?
If so, Keychain Access is storing the old information about the old network and may be associating it with your AirPort Extreme settings based on the BSSID that William has mentioned.
If that's the case, open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > KeyChain Access and look for a listing with the old network name. Delete this entry. You may need to power down both the computer and the AirPort Extreme and restart them.

  • Bandwidth usage/signal strength/dropped signal WRT160nv2

    Three questions
    1. How can I determine how much bandwidth each of my network devices are using.  Is there anyway to tell using Linksys easylink which is installed on my machine? I have a WRT160nv2 router.
    2. Is there anyway to boost signal strength through internal settings. If so, how do I do that.
    3. Been experiencing dropped signal for some wireless devices. Is there any way to determine why this happens and is there a fix for this problem.
    thanks

    1. Sorry no.
    2. Sorry no.
    3.  Change these settings in the router.  Disable UPnP, under wireless settings Beacon Interval 50, RTS and Fragmentation threshold 2304.  Change to channel 1.  Save settings.   Reconnect.

  • How to restore strength of signal from Airport Expresses on a network

I have a newly developed problem with the signal strength from two Airport Expresses drawing a wireless signal from an Airport Extreme downstairs near the router and an IMac. This network has been functioning well for some time. Recently I noted that the signal strength upstairs (for I Pods etc) was weak where it had previously been strong. The Airport Utility program reports that these AExpresses have been properly set up and report no problems (My Airport utility version was 4.something, in spite of supposedly being automatically upgraded, and when I checked "upgrades" that brought the response that there were none, even though the current version is 5.5.2, and I then went and got that upgrade anyway).
After fiddling with the upgraded Airport Utility, without knowing what I was doing, and possibly making the Airport Extreme reset itself, the strength of one of the Airport Expresses, (the one further away) increased almost to previous (normal?) levels, while the closer one stayed weak (the one Airport Utility calls "Base Station" even though, like the further Airport Express, it is an identical Airport Express wirelessly connected to the Airport Extreme downstairs). Both, incidentally are 8011n, if I have that right.
Please forgive this incoherent post, but I am confused about how to trouble shoot a network like this, when something is not going right. I have read a number of the support articles as well as posts in this discussion group, and have learned a lot in general, but not specifically for this problem.
    Thanks Rick Ward

Ok, thanks for clarifying your network requirements with the AXns.
For both AXns to be successful in extending the AEBSn's wireless network they need to be within a 25+ dB SNR range of that AEBSn. SNR, or Signal to Noise Ratio, is the base station's Signal strength (in dBm) - Noise level (in dBm). Two primary reasons for low SNR values is Wi-Fi interference and obstacles (like walls/ceilings, etc.) that prevent a signal from passing through.
You can easily calculate the SNR value by using a utility like iStumbler. Ideally, you would run iStumbler on a laptop and take signal & noise measurements at both the location of the AEBSn and at the desired locations of the AXns (with the AXns powered-off). If the SNRs are 25+ dB, then you should be get good performance with placing an AXn there to extend the AEBSn's wireless network. If not, then you won't.
Also, remember, with the 802.11n AirPorts, think of the configuration of the extended network with the main router as the hub of a wheel and the extending routers as spokes on that wheel. You cannot extend the network in a serial fashion (main to relay to remote) in this configuration.

  • Extract random portion of signal

If I am loading a signal from an LVM file, is there a way to extract a random portion of the signal?  Just some background, I will be loading multiple files in through a for loop/case structure, and each of the files may be of different lengths, so I won't know ahead of time how long the signal is.
    thanks,

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

LVM includes the number of points in each segment header.  You can get this by reading and parsing the header yourself.  The spec is located here.  The Express VIs presume that, being an ASCII file, LVM files are relatively small.  As such, the entire file is read into memory by the Express VI.  You can use the array or waveform VIs to easily extract a portion of this.
If you have huge files and this creates a memory issue, you can parse the file yourself.   Look for the ***End_of_Header*** line.  The next line is the column headers, followed by the data, one item per line.  The bad news is that lines can be a variable number of characters long.  This can make searching a long file for lines a very slow process.  One option is to read the file in 65,000 byte chunks and process these serially to get the data you want (this is what LVM does internally to convert from ASCII to data).

  • Difference between signal strength and signal qual...

Does anyone know the difference between the two scores and what they measure - and why the levels  change intermittantly. It's really affecting the quality of my tv picture.

The signal quality is actually a measure of the errors detected by the Vision box. Technically, the CBER in the advanced view is the "Corrected Bit Error Rate" measured as the  number of bit errors per billion bits received (i.e. units are 1 x 10^-9). If you had 100 bad bits in a billion bits it would display 100, but would correspond to 0.00001% error rate.
Note this is AFTER the Vision box has done its error correction. The raw Bit Error Rate is typically much higher but the broadcast signal includes information to enable the receiver to correct for most errors.
If the signal level is very high it can overload the box and result in poor quality and poor picture despite having a high signal level.
As Umpire said a signal quality of 100% will result in a perfect picture.
Do make sure that your HDMI cables are away from your aerial cables as they can cause interference. If you use the TV's Freeview tuner does that give a better picture or does it also suffer in the same way?
Also try entering your postcode into the UK Free site at http://www.ukfree.tv/transmitters.php - this gives you information about your local transmitter, including distance, scheduled engineering work and aerial recommendations.

  • Signal strength finder via black bt vision box

I have recently changed from sky (could be a big mistake) and have had constant troubles ever since.
The latest is I am getting pixelation on all tv channels.
Looking at the online "help" I have checked the aerial connections (all good), Aerial (brand new £50) and pointed in the correct direction. The next item was to use the handy signal strength checker as per BT's instructions.
However these do not appear to match what appears on screen.
You can check your Freeview signal using your Vision+ box, but please be aware that checking your signal will interrupt any recordings that are in progress. You only need to check the signal of one channel in a multiplex to know what signal you'll be getting for the whole multiplex.
    How to check your signal:
Press the BT Vision button on your remote control.
    DID THIS
    Scroll across to Settings.
SCROLL ACROSS GOES TO TV SO I SCROLLED DOWN.
NO "SETTINGS" PAGE SO WENT TO "HELP & SETTINGS"
    Select TV Settings.
    DID THIS
Select the DTT Signal Strength page.
NO "DTT SIGNAL STRENGTH" PAGE THE ONLY OPTIONS ARE 1/sCAN FOR CHANNELS, 2/ CHANNEL MANAGEMENT, 3/ TV SHAPE.
The minimum signal strength and quality you need for a good picture is:
    Signal Strength - 55%
    Signal Quality -70%
    Am I going mad ?
    Can anyone help please?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

There is good news and bad news. The good news is that you are not going mad. The bad news is that you have a new version of the software which unfortunately doesn't include a signal strength tool.
Does your TV have a Freeview tuner? If so, try using signal strength on that.
Your signal could be too weak or too strong. If it's too weak you may be able to use a booster. If it's too strong you can use an attenuator.

  • 2.1 firmware update listed signal strength display fix in its release notes

Summary to those who haven't read Apple's latest letter to iPhone 4 owners:
Apple is saying 'death grip' only affects the graphics of the signal strength not signal itself. Who accepts that? And will therefore fix this in the next firmware update.
But wait! This seems to be fixed in the 2.1 firmware update already!
    See 2.1 firmware update changelogs.
Google it, I don't want to post direct link as Apple may start pulling that information down.

Letter from Apple Regarding iPhone 4
    (emphasis mine)
    {quote}the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display *is totally wrong.*{quote}
    {quote}We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. *Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone*, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.{quote}
But the 2.1 firmware had in it's release notes as one of the improvements:
    {quote}improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display{quote}
So in 2.1 they improved the accuracy of a totally wrong formula?

  • Program terminates at random (No signals raised, no exit(),no crash report)

My program will occasionally terminate at random. No signal is ever raised, no crash report is ever generated and the only place exit() exists in the source code is in the signal handler (which is never called). This is getting somewhat frustrating as I cannot replicate the issue, It happens completely at random (or what appears to be random). Any idea what could cause this?

Also, you should post more details, such as app type (iOS/OS X), what you're doing, compiler warnings/errors, and details about your system (hardware/software). Click on "My Public Profile" to the right (after you log in) to begin.

  • IPhone loses signal for several minutes?

I had AT&T before I got my iPhone and I know of certain areas around my neighborhood where the signal is weak. My old phone would sometimes drop a call in those areas, but seconds later, the signal meter would start to refill as I drove into a stronger signal area. With my iPhone, it completely loses the signal and displays "No Service" in the upper left of the screen. However, even as I pass into an area that I know has a better signal, it will stay on "No Service" for about 2-4 minutes before it finally finds the signal again! Anyone else notice this?

More information on my reception problems. I am now absolutely convinced that it is a either a tower problem or a SIM problem - AT&T problem not strictly iPhone. I spent several hours today swapping SIM cards around between the iPhone, Nokia N95 and Nokia E61. In all cases I did the testing in exactly the same location within our house. Here are the results:
iPhone: Signal strength varies from No Service to full bars at this single location in a random, completely unpredictable way. While on a call signal strength was 4 bars and during the conversation dropped to No Service and call dropped. Later my wife called and was sent immediately to voice mail. She then called me on the landline and I checked the signal and it showed No Service. When it goes to No Service it sometimes takes a few minutes to re-acquire just like others have reported here.
N95 with iPhone SIM card: Signal strength varies from one bar to full bars in a random, completely unpredictable way. But never actually lost service. I tried several Edge data connections and while slow when signal was low none failed. I do not remember seeing this random fluctuation in signal on the N95 before with my old (pre iPhone) Cingular SIM card but perhaps it was there and since it was still usable I just didn't notice.
E61 with iPhone SIM card: Pretty much the same behavior as N95 except no full bar signal strength showed. Completely usable.
I realize that the iPhone will probably never get as good reception as the Nokias but I think if it would quit the signal strength variation or tower hopping or what ever it is doing it would be usable at even 1-3 bars if the signal remained steady.
As another point of information in case Cingular and T-Mobile are sharing towers at my location, I returned my T-Mobile SIM card to my N95 and tested it in the same location as before and it showed a consistent full bars with no variation and perfect operation.
Unless something good happens to solve this problem soon, I think that when I find a reliable method or service that will unlock the iPhone I am going to do it and go with T-Mobile. AT&T is not ready for dependable operation at my location with the iPhone.

  • MacBook not sending signal to external display - was working fine before.

hi guys, i have a unibody macbook and i've been hooking it up to my tv for almost 2 years now using the mini display port to hdmi adapter and hdmi to my television.
tonight the macbook randomly stopped sending signals to the tv. i tried two tvs with two different display adapters as well as a DVI monitor.
the displays are detected in osx but there is just no signal sending to it. anyone have any ideas? did my mini display port just die? i've tried several cables/adapters.

    Hey,
I just experienced a similar problem as the original poster, except that I'm using a minidisplayport - DVI adapter and not HDMI. Been working fine on my external screen for 2 months now and suddenly the external says no signal?
Macbook still flashes a blue screen when plugging in the adapter but does not detect the external. Haven't ruled out that the adapter is busted yet, but worked fine earlier.
I tried resetting the PRAM without any change.
Any kind of software / hardware problems on the macbook?
    Any thoughts?

  • Rssi strength

My Magic Mouse clicking became very stiff, so I recently purchased a new one, which is continually dropping/disconnecting. Also there is a horrible lag between click and effect which in photoshop makes it unworkable.
In Mountain Lion, holding down the option key while checking the bluetooth menulet would show the (weak) strength of the Blootooth connection with graphic bars. When it is very near the computer which is to my left benath the desk (about 1 foot away) it shows nearly full strength, but when I have it in a workable position (3 feet from MacPro) the signal drops to 'very poor'. I no longer see this graphic result in Mavericks. Is there another way to check the strength of signal?
I brought the Mouse back to the Mac Store where I bought it and of course it worked perfectly, so they could see no issue. I've also tried it at home on an iMac where it works but does disconnect occassionally.
    Any suggestions?

I'm getting -68dbm about three feet from MacPro located on the right of and behind my corner workspace desk (it's wood). Since in my last house the machine was positioned on the opposite side (left) and the signal was much stronger, I figure that I will need some kind of booster (D Link was mentioned elsewhere), externalof an antenna to fix it. That worst case level causes jumping of the Magic Trackpad (MT) that's driving me nuts. It's also affecting any wireless BT device (dongle) that happens to be plugged in.
Maybe some combo of USB wireless devices is the issue, too, I never had this many woreless issues and used the wireless keyboard/trackpad for awhile in various locations typically on the left of the machine. I put the MT on the other side of the room (4' away, but in front of the machine) is -61dbm and it works smoothly.
The closest "working level" that doesn't give a problem is when the trackpad is almost directly on top of the machine @-52dbm. As this is a newer machine, I guess I cannot discount the fact that there is an actual defect in the machine. Is there any other way to test it? I do not have a USB 3 card installed as that is a know BT killer.

  • Problems recovering signal when iPhone 5 lost it. Bug?

    Hello,
I'm experiencing random problems with my iPhone 5 when I lost the gsm signal (i.e. When I go down to a parking). When I go up to the street the iPhone cant recover the signal and 'no service' message appears. The problem happen randomly, sometimes the signal appears again.
I think that this may be a bug because there are three different iphones 5 in my family and I have experienced the probem with all. The three iphones are in 6.0.2 and the cell operator is different in each one.
Anybody has experienced problems like this?

I originally bought my phone, well actually pre-ordered it, from ATT here in the US. I had issues with the connection loss from day 1 of getting it activated. I spent probably about 30 hours over the course of 6 months on the phone with ATT and Apple support. Apple always blamed ATT and ATT blamed Apple. I had a friend who worked for ATT and he went through all my stuff that ATT handles and got it all set up properly and I still had the issue. After that I concentrated on Apple.
I did, however, a couple weeks ago get my phone replaced after spending 2 hours on the phone with Apple arguing that I was still having the issue and Apple trying to push the blame to ATT and the support person even went as far as to put "DO NOT REPLACE PHONE" in my support notes, the rep in the Apple Store didn't notice me reading the notes over his shoulder. Long story short, phone replaced and still have the issue.
I've noticed if I'm on 4 bar LTE and I get a phone call it will drop to 1 bar 4G while it is ringing and stay that way for about 5 minutes after they leave a voicemail. I have officially decided to switch to the Galaxy S4 because I am tired of having a phone that doesn't work, which is very dangerous. Prime example. I live in Oklahoma, where a tornado hit 3 miles from my house. My wife called me to warn me. After that phone call I could not send a text, EVEN WHILE ON WIFI, or make a phone call. I spent 15 minutes resetting the phone and trying everything I could to get a call to her to tell her I was okay. I actually had to turn my xbox on and have a friend in another state call her for me to tell her I was okay and my phone wouldn't work. My brother, who lived 2 miles away had no issues with his ATT Galaxy S4 when I was having issues so it wasn't due to the storm. I recommend that if you have an Apple Iphone 5 that has issues, switch to the Galaxy S4 or another smart phone. I think there are more Iphone 5s with the connection issue then there are without connection issues.

  • Why does my iPad randomly shut down and then restart?

This has only happened since the newest iOS update. It has also had problems with the wifi happening since the last 6 level update: randomly drops wifi signal etc.
What can I do? I've tried backing up and doing a factory restore, the problem doesn't resolve.

I'm not sure. I didn't buy it, I won it in a contest at work and I don't have any of the reciepts or anything for it.

  • Weak Signal or No Service after upgrading  firmware 1.1.2

I live in Los Angeles, Hollywood area, and for the past 2 months have had nothing but headaches with weak signal strength, no signal, dropped calls and slow data service. Sometimes the phone will have 5 bars then go down to zero bars or no signal without even moving! I think it must be the iphone/at&t service/software, since my friends on standard phones with AT&T seem to not have these issues.. I have seen on other message boards that other iPhone users around the country are experiencing similar issues...
No one seems to answer my question, "Could this problem be related to the Edge/3G combination have anything to do with this problem? The first 5 months of using the Iphone, I only noticed slight weak signal problems, generally related to having the wifi radio on. But this problem is occurring with wifi off. I have Reset the Phone, restored the phone, re-seated the SIM card, check to ensure SIM show no physical damage, all to no avail. You folks need to give me some real answers, and not just the standard we don't know. Now I must add there are some places like 6700 Hollywood Bl. where the signal is great both Voice and Data, but a 1700 N. Las Palmas the signal drops off to one bar, and at 1737 N. Las Palmas Av. it goes to No Service. Please help Please help!

You folks need to give me some real answers, and not just the standard we don't know.
Firstly, "we" folks here are iPhone users, just like yourself, not Apple employees (though there are a few who sometimes post here of their own volition, and not because they have to). So your problem will be answered or advised on depending on our own experiences with the iPhone. To that point, I am in the UK, and am one of those people who have suffered from exactly the same problem as you: my iPhone gets very poor reception in areas where other 02 (UK network) phones get near perfect reception. There is a rather long thread on this topic, and another similar one which was started when the original was locked by the mods. I'm afraid that after much troubleshooting, we are still no closer to finding the source of the problem. What seems pretty clear is that the iPhone antenna probably isn't as sensitive as those of other phones. Also, it's on the bottom of the phone, so can be covered with your hand causing a drop in signal strength. It may also be that in an attempt to conserve battery life, the iPhone doesn't boost the signal as much as it should. But there are all speculations at the moment.
You best best is to communicate your feedback directly to Apple at:
