Random Survey of Zen Mi

Well today I just recieved the Zen Micro silver, purchased from Crutchfield. I have been a little scared by the many problems I have been hearing about, but I decided to go with it anyways. The box is not open and I have no idea of what will happen, so I am not someone who found this board just looking to vent a little steam. If the Zen has no problems, great, but if it does end up having many unfixable problems I dont think it would be a coincidence that I just recieved one of the few bad Zen Micros. But lets see.
I was going to follow the manufacterers recommended procedure for beginning use with this product, but it seems like that is not the best way. I have seen some people get flamed on here also for "bringing problems upon themselves," so does anyone care to list a set of procedures to properly begin using my Zen Micro...
. Charge the battery overnight before doing anything...

Ok, I charged it up fully before I did anything. When that was finished I went straight to uploading the software, which I did have some trouble with because I didnt understand what some of the procedures meant or were for. I still dont. I just followed through anyways.
Everything downloaded fine, but downloading WMP0, it updated my old WMP and now I cannot play a few videos that would work fine on my old WMP. I dont know what that is about.
Starting to download music, I used my own USB as I heard some things about Creatives. Instantly the box on the bottom corner came up, so I was happy it was recognized... BUT, that was not the case. WMP0 and the automatic Creative pages that came up would not recognize the player. I went through the help section and it said to go directly to MY COMPUTER and start the player from its icon, which worked fine and enabled me to start downloading. I uploaded some files easily and left the player on all night. The battery lasted approximately 7 hours. I hope it gets better. I know some people have worse, but 7 is still a long ways from the advertised 2. I still need to figure out how the player will be recognized by all programs.
The other thing is about the user interface. The touchpad is rediculous. I changed the language to chinese letters before I had any idea of what I did. It has a mind of its own, really. The real problem is that it is not precise in the least! Adjusting does not help at ALL. Its a wonder how something like this gets by Creative Labs. I hope the new firmware updates this problem.
All and all, its a great little thing, smaller than I expected, and there is nothing on the market that I would trade it for. It just has a few stupid quirks... Also, for a micro player you would at least make it thinner than a 20gb iPod. Not to mention I never had to use the lock function so many times in my life. Also, the right headphone has been been turning off and on a few times but it seems to be fine now.

  • Random mode on Zen vision

you guys are going to think im an idiot, but I've had my zen vision M for about a year, and about a month after I got it, I put the dj thing on random. it has been on random ever since then, because I have no freaking idea how to set it back to normal!... like, i said, sounds like a stupid question, but I figured somone might know what I was talking about. I looked on the faqs thread too, and many of the troubleshooting lists and things like that did not include the vision m model. I was looking for the answer to some of my other questions there, but they seemed to not apply. does this mean my model is a really crappy model and no one uses it's or am I just looking in the wrong place ... is there a certain forum or thread just for the vision m also, I tried to put some of my dvds on my zen, and the computer was like, "NO WAY YOU THIEF! STOP STEALING AND copyrightlawas and notcompatable....blablabla....grumble..." but... I payed for the dvds at FYE or whatever, they arent bootleg or anything, so i dont understand why they wont load on the zen, because it says it can play movies. the only movies it has on it now are those little advertising clip things that were on there when I got it.

If you want to play something else instead of music through the DJ mode, just go back into the Music Library and select the artists/albums you want to play.
As far as DVDs go, you may have legitimately purchased those but that does not mean copying or ripping them is allowed. To get the content off the protected DVD, you need to decrypt it, and this is currently illegal in the US for instance. We cannot allow discussion on how to rip a DVD to your player, there are sites where you may be able to find this information but as it is illegal in some countries and a grey area in others, we can't allow discussion of those specifics here.

  • Random Problems with Zen Micro? Try a diff. USB cable

I know people have mentioned this in other posts, but I thought I would reiterate it here. Many people seem to be complaining that their player is not recognized, or only sometimes recognized, or recognized by Windows (as a USB device) but not by their Creative software, or songs won't transfer, etc. Well, I had some similar problems which ALL went away when I started using a different USB cable - the one that shipped with the Micro just doesn't seem to work consistently.
So, if you are having problems with your player that you can't seem to solve any other way, you may want to try a different USB cable. It worked for me.
Hope this helps - I am (now) loving my new Micro!

I tried a different USB cable also, I thought that it would help, but I still got the same problems. I can almost guarantee that although you think you may have solved your issues, they WILL come back.
I've also been experiencing the "Player Not Connected" problem with my Zen Micro.
I've also had the problem where the Zen Micro just freezes in the "Docked" screen even after it has been disconnected from the PC
I've noticed that these are common problems with Zen Micros with the new firmware (.0.03)
My old Zen Micro with the old, original firmware did NOT have this connectivity problem
Creative should investigate these issues associated with this new firmware, or maybe even making the old firmware available for download to see if this really is the source of all these problems.

  • Zen Touch / Random M

    Hi there!
when i'm in "Random" mode the Zen plays songs from my whole library.
Can i restrict the selection to a certain genre or album or artist?
I don't want to mix classic with rock with blues etc...
    regards,
    Frizz

Yes. Go to the main menu, then to Play Mode, then select Shuffle, and start playing a certain Artist and all the songs just from that artist will play in random.

  • On Line Support Survey

I just participated in a three page survey regarding these fora.
Found it very elementary and not focused at all on the things discussed here. Almost like, "Are these boards any good"?
Was that a random survey or are you all seeing them at the top of the page?
    Joe

    Hi, Joe -
Many folk have received the survey request. It would appear to be random, but it is not clear what the trigger is - a few have received it more than once. One common event seems to be that it appears immediately after the person has posted a message.
It is indeed quite rudimentary; it seems to be directed primarily toward folk coming here for help, and includes very little applicable to those who stay here to help others.

  • Zen vsion M 30g computer sync and charge problem

My Zen vsion M was baught from creative refurbished. It was working fine but stopped. I couldn't connect it to my computer because it wouldn't recognize that it was plugged in. There fore my battery couldn't charge and eventually ran out. If i plug it into my computer it has a black screen with the beattery charging symbol in the corner and the blue light under the power button blinks. Although it is plugged in it won't charge. I have had it plugged in to try and charge it for over 2 hours but it built up no charge. On any random occasion the Zen turns on and functions like it normally would only while being plugged it but it only functions as the player portion. It doesnt sync or recognize that its plugged in. Are you still within the warranty ? If so send it back or buy a wall charger for it. The PSP (playstation portable) wall charger will work & is safe for the player using the Creative dongle .

  • Has this forum been hacked?

I just filled out a survey which opened in a window when I entered the forum. There was an Adobe logo in the window and I had no suspicious sites open in my browser. After finishing the survey, in which I spent valuable time giving feedback about how the search features of this site don't work, the survey said "Our Website Survey Is Temporarily Unavailable" and that I should send an email to a cryptic email address:
    [email protected]
This is extremely suspicious. Wow... even trying to get help is making things worse.

No, Foresee has been doing random surveys on this site.
Not sure what net glitch caused the unavailable message (but we've sure had a lot of them on the forums and adobe.com lately).

  • Codecs for Z

    Hi!
Today I got CREATIVE ZEN, and yesterday I wanted to prepare some videos to load today to my player, I used Super (C) Converter, and used these options:
    For video:
    Output Container: avi
    Video Codec: DivX
    Audio Codec: mp3
    Video size: 320x240
    Aspect: 4:3
    Frames per second: 25
    Bitrate: 536
    For audio:
    Sampling Freq: 4400
    Channels: 2
    Bitrate: 60 kbps
I converted this way 8 videos, tryed to load them today to my player and it only allowed me to put 5 videos from eight, it'ssaid that something is too high for this player, I don't understand how! The options were all the same, 5 of them work normally, BUT the player cuts few seconds from the end, which is annoying (that doesn't happen with default videos that were in the player)!
I installed everything from the ZEN CD.
I tried to convert a movie with Super (C) converter, spent a few hours with conversion, and it worked out corrupted! Tryed to convert one .flv (from YouTube) video, and it also worked out corrupted!
Then I tried to convert few videos with the converter which came with the ZEN player, and it says that I can't convert because some codecs are missing. I have WMP 9, can't install higher because my Windows aren't legal. So what do I do Where do I get the codedcs
And by the way is it'sat all possible to watch full length movies on the Creative Zen Player

Ok and some more questions: can the battery life be affected if I fully discharge and charge it every day? And how long does it take to fully charge the battery, I read that it takes about 4 hours, but mine stops charging after about 2.
    Okay okay okay...
For one, every rechargeable battery loses its capacity after so many charges. Like (complete random statistic) your Zen lasts 0 hours playing songs when you first bought it, after a year, 8 hours. My suggestion for your first question is to keep charging it normally, but after like 2 months, let the battery drain (Don't charge it til your player can't turn on).
Your second question requires a little common sense, to FULLY (meaning your battery was empty when you charged it) charge your Zen, it might take 4 hours, more or less. If your battery is like halfway on the indicator, then it might take like an hour. My advice, don't worry.

  • Creative Zen 8GB Random Shuffle

Creative Zen 8GB Random Shufflej I have owned a Creative Zen V Plus 4GB for two years and have really enjoyed it. About a month ago, the screen started to fade out and is now totally black. I have researched this problem and have come to the realization that there is no way to fix the issue short of either shipping my player in for repairs or buying a new Zen V Plus. I have tried all the "fixes" I could find on here and other places. Nothing works and a lot of others seem to have the same issues with their players. The player still plays fine, but with no screen, it is very?tough to use correctly. I am willing to "start over" with a new player and am interested in the Creative Zen 8GB. The player looks real nice and has all the features I need. I read online that the Creative Zen 8GB DOES NOT have a random shuffle feature. I was just wondering if this is true? I love setting my player on random shuffle and letting it randomly choose the songs. If this is not a feature on the Zen, I guess I wouldn't be interested in buying one. Does anyone know if the Creative Zen 8GB has the random shuffle feature?

Yes it does. You would from the music menu scroll to DJ & choose random play all

  • Zen V Plus plays in random order -- whether I like it or n

    Hi All,
I searched and read the FAQ but couldn't get an answer that addresses this issue:
I've put my music on my new Zen V Plus (which I absolutely _love_!) and organized the songs into playlists. When I select a playlist and start it at the first song, however, the order of the songs that follow from there are *completely* random. If I go back and start again, it randomizes the playlist in a different -- random -- order. I've looked through all of the menus and can't find a "random" or "shuffle" setting to turn off. Is this normal? Am I missing some trick?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark

    Romerica --
Thanks for your speedy reply! I looked on the Main Menu and there was no "Play Mode" listed. However, having but recently learned about the "Configure Menu" option (under System/Player Settings for those having this same issue), I went in and discovered that the "Play Mode" was un-checked. I checked it and went back the the Main and voila! "Play Mode" was now listed and I could set it back to Normal. Problem solved! Multo, multo grazie!
    Regards,
    Mark

  • Zen MX 'random play all' problems

!Zen MX 'random play all' problemso Hello, 2 newbies here, Maz (who is typing)?and mum Wendy (whose player is having problems).
I have a Zen in an older version and I've never had many problems but my mum recently got a 6gb?Zen MX (version .00.09)?and although it was working fine before recently after an update that seemed to go wrong (I wasn't there an mum?is?unclear what exactly went wrong but we have had a major virus problem)?the 'random play all' mode has become messed up somehow. It will only play one track at a time then stops and has to be prompted to continue every time. Apparently it also randomly halfway through tracks will sometimes change the speed of play but I have not heard this so I'm not exactly sure whether this is a separate problem or already resolved.
So far we have tried using the reset button and that had no effect. Then we tried restoring the default settings and reprogramming the programmeable button to random play all and the issue reoccurs. We have also checked and 'play mode' is on shuffle as I thought it should be.
    Any suggestions?
    Maz & Wendy

Has the firmware on the player been updated? • Zen Vision M: Random Play All, press FF button, becomes Album of the

OK, I choose 'Random Play All' from the DJ menu, and it does queue all the tracks. But if a track that I do not want to listen to comes up, I press the >> Fast Forward button to try to skip to the next song in the queue, but then it goes to 'Album of the Day' mode.
It does this no matter what 'Play Mode' I have the player in.
    I have upgraded the firmware.
My Zen Xtra did not do this....
    Any idears?
    Bill

Sounds like you both need to report it as a bug. In my experience bugs mentioned here don't tend to get fixed.
Go to the support section under contact, and file a report there of the bug.
That way a ticket will get made and put in the system and sooner (most likely later) we might see a fix in the next firmware.

  • PETITION: Change Zen Touch "Random" button functionali

I've heard alot of people mention this and thought it might be a good idea to make our voices heard (we might as well make use of all the time creative is taking to release the firmware!).
Basically I'm sick and tired of the random button. Sometimes I have the zen touch in my pocket and accidently press the random button and away goes my entire custom playlist, its so annoying especially when I haven't saved the playlist. It happens at least two times everyday while I'm on my way to college, I nearly broke down in tears the last time it happened. Yes I can use the hold switch, but I frequently switch tracks and its a joke having to hold/un-hold/hold/un-hold/hold constantly. Also, the remote is a rip-off so theres no going there!
    OK, my proposal is this:
    a) Single press - Zen Touch switches between normal and shuffle mode.
    b) 3 second press - Zen Touch loads up entire music library in shuffle mode.
I'm 99.5% sure this is possible via firmware update, so please Creative, put me out of my misery!!!Message Edited by titaniumx3 on 05-05-2005 07:7 AM

I'd like to throw my $0.02 in. I completely agree that the RANDOM button's functionality should be changed. I don't use it because, upon pressing, it loads my ENTIRE library into the shuffle playlist. The problem is that I don't just carry music on my Zen Touch. I have audio books and audio dramas. Each audio drama is broken up into 8 to 20+ tracks. So, with the current RANDOM button functionality, it would work this way:
    ===============================================
(LOADS ENTIRE LIBRARY AND SETS MODE TO SHUFFLE)
    Plays a Massi've Attack song
    Plays an Incubus song
Plays Track 3 of the Doctor Who audio drama "Chimes of Midnight"
Plays a 939 episode of the Shadow radio play (which is 30 minutes long)
    Plays a Cure song
Plays a reading from "The Dark Tower Book 4: Wizard and Glass"
    Plays a Beastie Boys song
    Plays a Strokes song
Plays Track from the Doctor Who audio "Scherzo"
    etc....
    ===============================================
Clearly, this isn't a realistic way to shuffle audio. It works great if you use your Zen Touch for PURELY music. But I don't. I'd rather see the RANDOM button toggle between NORMAL and SHUFFLE modes, but not load any audio tracks to playlist. In fact, that was my first thought when I bought the Zen Touch of how the button works. Currently, for me, it's a pain.

  • Weird Menu/Random button conflict on Zen To

Sometimes when I press the "menu" button on my Zen Touch, it randomly queues all tracks, as though the random button has been pressed instead. Has anyone else noticed this problem? It's a fairly minor annoyance (especially compared with some of the other problems I've had with the Zen Touch *grumble grumble* ) but still, it's odd. Firmware reloads, harddri've cleanups etc do nothing to change the problem.
Message Edited by debaser on 0-09-2005 0:40 AM

I think you have a "mechanical" problem i.e. when you're pressing the Menu button due to its proximity it's also pressing the random button as well. Sounds like you might need to return your player... but you could try a reset and a disk cleanup, and perhaps updating the firmware. To access the Rescue Mode hold down the play button and KEEP it held down, press the tiny reset switch once, and KEEP the play button held down until the player boots into the Rescue Mode. Choose Disk Cleanup from the menu.

  • My Creative Zen has started randomly deleting alb

I bought my Zen (6 GB) from eBay on February 3rd.
It was deli'vered to me on the?5th of February. Although it was for my birthday (on the 23rd), I was allowed to put all my albums on it etc. so that it would be 00% ready for use when I actually opened it on my birthday morning.
I followed the instructions and did?nothing out of the ordinary. Charged it fully before use, didn't do anything weird when I was syncing music onto it, etc. I?have had three previous Creative MP3 players, one of them a Zen (4 GB), but decided to upgrade to 6 GB when?the?4 GB?became too small, and have treated them all the same. They have been fine.
I have been using?my current Zen?since the 23rd, but discovered about a week ago that it has started randomly deleting?various albums. I don't know if it just doesn't like Sting, Fleetwood Mac, or Mark Knopfler, but it's kind of irritating.
Has this happened to anyone else, and what might have caused it's Is it just faulty? Thanks.

My music is bought; just ripped from CD onto my laptop and synced using Windows Media Player (like all my previous MP3 players).
Also, I just remembered that it sometimes does this thing where it turns itself back on after I've turned it off.
Well, it's just deleted all my Bowie albums my guess is, the player s become sentient and has taken against the music I listen to.
Anyway, thanks for your help. I'll contact support and see how it goes from there.
