Random system hang-ups with Kernel 3.2.1-1 and catalyst 11.12

Hello,
i have a very strange problem for the last month or so (i'm afraid i cannot say, when it exactly happened the first time or if it was after a upgrade): My system just randomly crashes. I haven't yet found out when it exactly crashes and how to reproduce it. But it happens almost every 2-3 days.
When the system hangs up, the last second of sound repeat over and over again. I can't move my mouse anymore as well as typing has no effect. I cannot change to another terminal. I cannot ssh into the laptop nor can i ping it.
In /var/log/messages.log, there is nothing usefull.. It just ends with the old kernel messages and then the new ones, when the system restarts. No error or so.
System runs on a Thinkpad X121e with AMD E-350 CPU. I have installed catalyst 11.12 with xorg-server 1.11.3. I will now compile catalyst 12.1 and see if it happens again.
Does anyone have a clue why the system crashes? Has it anything to do with catalyst?
Best regards,
pyro

isofluran wrote:Again, as I metioned before, the problem is likely not a hardware one but it is actually related to the kernel update (2.6.19)  or to an update which was performed at the same time.
Can anyone give a proposal for a step by step procedure to isolate the problem?
As I don't believe these crashes are related to anything but the kernel, one way of debugging your issues could be:
* boot Knoppix
* zcat /proc/config.gz | some non-volatile media
* boot arch
* get the current ABS
* replace config in kernels/kernel26 with the one from Knoppix
* makepkg
* install and test
When that kernel runs, try to diff the two configs and see what's changed in arch. Also comparing both kernel versions if no significant changes exist might hint on the kernel being the problem.

  • Random System Hangs - 100 % SSD Usage

    I'm having some significant issues with a new PC build. I have a 240 gb Ultra II.  I have 8.1 installed on it, as well as a few other programs (I'm at 182 GB free).  Now, at random times when I'm using my system, everything will suddenly hang.  All programs become unresponsive, the mouse sometimes locks up, ctrl+alt+delete won't do anything, etc.  This lasts for about 30 seconds, then everything usually returns to normal.  I leave task manager open at all times now, and it shows that during these hangs, my SSD "active time" jumps to and stays at 100%. These hangs don't seem to be linked to specific software.  They occur randomly, even when my computer is under no significant load.  I've already tried a clean install of 8.1.  I've tried disabling superfetch/prefetch and other background system processes.  I'm very confident that I am free of any viruses/malware.  I'm suspecting some sort of hardware issue, but the SanDisk Dashboard shows that my disk health is fine.  My firmware is also up to date. Has anyone had similar issues?  Any advice or thoughts?

    Hi Deponia, Thanks for the suggestions.  I've already tried a complete format and reinstallation of windows, and the issue still recurred.  I've also tried a repair installation from the windows disc, and that also did not eliminate the issue. After a couple google searches, I'm not seeing much about compatibility issues with the motherboard.  I have an AsRock H97 Pro4. I'll try to contact sandisk support.  I'm getting advice on other forums as well, I'm going to try increasing my virtual memory.

  • System.log flooded with kernel[0]: On Board Mode Message

    The Kernel keeps sending this message, apparently at a rather brisk pace.  It's been going on for over a month apparently*.  It's ogooglebar, also.  Any thoughts on what it is?  I'm not observing anything wrong on the system, but it's annoying when I need to rummage through the logs for whatever reason.

  • Text-only Pop-ups with linked Word docs in RH8 and links in general

    Procedures have been written in Word with several words to have pop-up definitions.  The Word-styles have been set up in my RH8 project.  I plan on linking the Word docs instead of importing them.
    What are the impacts to the pop-ups and links when the original Word document gets modified down the road.  Do these all need to be set up again?
    Am I better off performing an import or will linking be acceptable?  I have not tried to create the pop-ups or links at this point.
    Additionally, we already called out related procedures at the bottom of our procedure (they are not linked-would do that in RH).  Should I remove these in the Word document and perform the drop and drag function in RH8 to add the related documents?

    A pop-up menu can be associated only with timelines not with playlists.

  • What is wrong with FF it keeps closing up and numerous hang ups awful

    I have so many problems with this browser - they just keep multiplying. Today, Firefox started closing by itself without my doing anything. This is added to the constant script running errors and other hang ups that constantly slow down my work and are driving me crazy. Maybe I'd just better go back to IE? I've tried your help "fixes" and they don't. Very frustrating.

    Did Firefox crash?

    Hi,
    i have installed Oracle 10g on SuSE 9 Professional with kernel 2.4.21-192 and it works fine.
    For testing purposes i have installed a 2.6.4 Kernel and get the following error on database startup:

    Do you have any hints or is the kernel 2.6 not supported.
    Thanks Klaus

    Wireless extensions are included and I did make/make install and everything seemed to go right - no errors! And I have allways used rt2500-cvs-daily -drivers because they have been very stable (in my system).

    Code:
    modprobe -l | grep rt2
    Thanks for that - there was missing rt2500.ko module and I added it in place and wlan is now working.
    But now I have nvidia-problems... maybe I can solve it later

  • System hangs randomly with hard disk problem

    I got some problems with random system failures. After a couple of hours my system isn't usable anymore. Most programs freeze and if I try to start new programs, I get a I/O error message. System console writes many errors like this:
    [ 3728.036223] systemd-journald[127]: Failed to write entry (18 items, 517 bytes), ignoring: Read-only file system
    Then I have to reset my hardware. This problem occurs since two days. I made an update lately, but I can't remember if that problem occurred after that update.
    What can cause such a problem? Where do I find relevant log files?

    I just checked my SSD with smartctl. It displayed a warning with a link to: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Crucia … 14544.html. That sounds like my problem. I try to update my firmware.

  • Total lock-ups with fan running - translate system.log file please!?

    Hi, all. My late 2005 2.3 gig dual G5 has been experiencing random lock ups for as long as I can remember. My system is up to date and I have tested each pair of the 5 gigs of ram that I have and the system freezes with each pair. It can happen at any time, when I am doing absolutely nothing, for example, overnight. I am at my wits end!
    Here's the system log file for the latest freezes. Can anyone tell me what's going on here??? I really need to get to the root of this problem. Thanks so so much in advance.

    Hi-
    The machine seems to be having trouble with loading certain drivers, but, as this isn't a crash log, and doesn't show the "hang-up" or freeze, it's hard to tell.
    Noted possibilities are:
    -Microsoft keyboard (possible USB power problem)
    -firmtek driver (from archive) questionable due to the "archive" annotation
    -Wacom tablet driver, causing system problems
    Running in Safe mode without freezes would help to determine if one of these drivers is the problem.
    Other possibilities are outdated drivers, or simply a need to reinstall the OS.
    If unnecessary, removing the driver(s) would be a good idea.
    External USB and Firewire devices are all suspect, should all be disconnected, revert to Apple keyboard, and test system performance. Adding one device at a time, and testing each will be necessary to clear each device.
    I have experienced system trouble when a Wacom tablet was not connected, but the driver was left installed.
    Disabling the driver from Startup items may be necessary to test without the Wacom tablet connected.

  • [SOLVED] Arch with kernel 3.15.1 hangs/reboots in early boot

    Hi all,
    Recently I bought Asrock D1800B-ITX and I installed Arch without seeing any error messages.
    However, when I rebooted to the installed system, the kernel hangs after printing "Booting the kernel."
    What should I do next to troubleshoot this?
    PC spec:
    CPU: Intel Celeron J1800
    Mobo: Asrock D1800B-ITX (BIOS version 1.4)
    RAM: Transcend DDR3L-1333 2G x2 (passes memtest86+ 5+ times)
    SSD: Crucial m4 64GB (M4-CT064M4SSD1)
    What I tried to do:
    The installation method is the same as the Beginners' guide on the ArchWiki.
    Arch ISO 2014.06.01 written in a USB memstick by dd is used to install Arch.
    Both UEFI (tried first) and BIOS installation won't work.
    Changing the HOOKS variable in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf won't affect the symptom (tried "base udev ...", "base systemd ..." and "systemd ...").
    The kernel from linux-lts package (3.10.44 as of writing) and 3.14.4 (included in Arch ISO 2014.06.01) boots.
    The console output (tty0) from the kernel with "debug" appended to the kernel parameter is messed up like the image if framebuffer is enabled.
    If framebuffer is disabled, I got some error messages like this image("debug" appended).
    The serial console output from the kernel 3.15.1-1 with "debug boot_delay=5000 console=ttyS0,115200n8r" appended to the paramaters is below:

    Does the parameter maxcpus=1 affected to your system?
    Wow, with your paramater the kernel boots!
    However, the framebuffer is still broken (the same white artifacts, but many of them).
    I'm considering filing this issue as a bug in the Kernel Bug Tracker...
    I also tried unplugging all of the USB devices connected (the reason is this page, linked from the thread you mentioned), but no luck.
    Here is the serial console output (in the hope of potentially helping others):

  • System hangs with radeon card and vgaswitcheroo

    I have an HP Envy 17-3200 with an integrated HD4000 (i915) and an ATI M7850 (radeon).  These modules are both included in the kernel via mkinitcpio.  I am using systemd but have enabled the rc-local service to run at boot (rc.local is run).  This turns off the discrete card via vgaswitcheroo.  Given this configuration, the system boots normally into gdm.  However, when I attempt to switch graphics cards via:
    $ echo DDIS > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
    $ sudo systemctl restart gdm.service
    The system hangs (I have to force a reset).  This happens regardless of whether I echo OFF into vgaswitcheroo.  This does not happen if I restart gdm without switching cards.
    I know the radeon driver is loaded and associated with my card as:
    $ lspci -k
    00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
    Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 1853
    Kernel driver in use: i915
    01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device 6827 (rev ff)
    Kernel driver in use: radeon
    I'm not even sure of what log to look in to narrow down the problem.
    NOTE:  This seems to be related to this post.  That problem was at boot time and mine was not, though.  In addition, no one replied to that post, so I thought I might make a new one.

    I am not 100% sure, but I think that is the answer to your question.  Not very satisfying, but I have the same problem.  It's impossible to get it working.
    Maybe Wayland will solve the issue, someday... when we've already bought new laptops... which by that time won't be supported by Wayland. ;-)

    IBM OS ISSUE: SYSTEM HANG WITH JFS2 AND HEAVY LOAD
    ==================================================
    PURPOSE
    이 문서는 IBM AIX5L OS 상에서 Arch Process가 online redo log
    를 release하지 못하고 OS의 kill 명령으로 kill조차 되지 않을 경우
    조치 방법이다.
    Problem Description
    이 문서는 다음 OS 정보와 Oracle version인 경우에 해당한다.
    Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition - Version: 9.2.0.5.0
    Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition - Version: 8.1.7.4.0
    AIX5L Based Systems (64-bit) or (32-bit)
    문제 발생 당시의 증상은 다음과 같다.
    - arch-process doesn't release redolog files
    - arch-process doesn't die after database shutdown
    - arch-process can't be killed
    genclntsh 수행 시 hang 상태이다.
    (sleeping...)28590: kwaitpid(0x2FF22470, -1, 4, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
    또는 이 문제로 인하여 ORA-600[2103] 에러가 발생하기도 한다.
    이 에러가 발생하는 원인은 IBM AIX5L 64bit, 32bit OS 이슈에 있다.
    IBM OS issue: SYSTEM HANG WITH JFS2 AND HEAVY LOAD.
    Workaround
    none
    Solution Description
    OS AIX5L ML4.0(5.2.0.40)의 bos.up / bos.mp / bos.mp64 fileset level을
    갖는 JFS2 file system을 갖는 경우에 해당한다.
    AIX 5.3 APAR IY59387은 IY58143에 포함되어 있다.
    JFS2 file system에 Heavy I/O activity가 발생하면 database process에
    HANG 문제를 야기시킬 수 있다. 이 때 database process가 kill -9
    명령으로 kill되지 않는다. 데이타베이스를 SHUTDOWN하여도 Process가
    계속 살아 있게 된다.
    Process에게 SIGKILL 함수가 issue되었지만 영향을 주지 않게 된다.
    Process를 제거하는 유일한 방법은 OS를 reboot하는 것이다.
    문제를 예방하는 방법은 IBM APAR-FIX IY59082 를 적용하는 것이다.
    이 APAR는 bos.64bit 5.2.0.42에 포함되어 있다.
    Fix :
    Need to install the IBM APAR-FIX IY59082, this APAR is included on
    bos.64bit 5.2.0.42.
    (주) IBM 엔지니어에게 확인 결과 이 Patch 안에 AIX5L 32bit 용과 64bit
    용이 모두 포함되어 있는 것으로 확인됨.

    b,
    The install was from my original Dell XP Pro-SP1 'Reinstallation' CD along with the complete MS XP-SP2 download that I burned to another CD. I also had all the latest Dell drivers from their website burned to a CD. Install went as follows:
    - Format HD
    - Install XP Pro SP1
    - Install SP2
    - Install Dell Drivers
    - Obtain any MS patches from their site
    - Install Office
    - Update Office from the MS website
    - Install iTunes
    - Tweak MS settings
    - Install many software programs
    - Make an interim Image of system and store to ExHD
    - Install other software programs (mostly security programs)
    - Make another 'complete' Image to ExHD
    - Restore backup data and music
    After additional testing last night, I determined that it is not iTunes at all (or to blame). I get intermittent hangs/freezes/pauses in other media players (WMP, etc.).
    Seems that something is causing the 'System' process to periodically jump up in CPU %age (though not more than 30-50%). Even this relatively small amount is enough to pause the playback of music or video, hang the mouse movement for a brief moment, or delay a menu opening. All very subtle - you have to be looking for it to notice (except with real-time audio-video, which is quite noticeable whenever this happens).
    I had this problem a year ago, which is why I reimaged then and stayed with SP1 on the advice of Dell and Webroot. I'm stumped as to where to look for the culprit. Every time I go back to the original HD with SP1, everything runs smoothly. Some sort of system call is generating this complete pause....
    I'll be limited in my Internet ability for the next several days, so I may be out of touch until Friday. I'll keep testing and playing with the limited equipment I take along....
    Any thought you or others want to toss out, I'll attempt when possible.
    Thanks!
