Random unexplained shutdown in low light - the battery?

Recently I posted http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=685918&tstart=15
about my PB suddenly shutting down with a 'whining' sound. This was when on battery power (with a recent replacement battery) and always in low light conditions when e.g. the keyboard back light might be needed.
This evening it happened again, twice, the second time my I could not get the PB to respond to the power button at all (battery fully charged BTW), each time I pressed power I got a brief whining noise but nothing else. I swapped in the old battery (yeah, I know, just not got round to sending it back yet) and it started fine.
There was a faint smell from the old battery, maybe just warm battery, maybe more. Just, as they say, my 5 penn'orths worth.
Anyway, I am in the UK, how do I go about reporting my problem to Apple?

Sorry there are some typos above, but you should be able to figure out what I'm asking. Let me know if you have tha same problem, know how to fix it, or know if apple is aware of the problem and is adressing it in a future update.

  • Low-light Cameras

    Hey Everyone,
As camera and sensor technology has advanced, so has the ability of digital cameras to record in lower light without an external light source. In the past if you wanted to capture a useable image in low-light conditions you would have to use flash, strobes, or in a pinch you could use hot-lights.
Sensors have really come a long way. Modern Backlit CMOS sensors allow far more light to actually reach the photosites that capture the image, and because of this the data needs far less amplification. These types of sensors should produce images with far less digital noise while shooting at higher sensitivities. Over the last couple of years I have seen cameras with much higher selectable sensitivity to light (this is called the camera’s ISO).
Another feature that’s become better-and-better  over the years, which also helps out in shooting in low-light situations, is image stabilization. Basically Image stabilization shifts either the lens elements, or the sensor itself, to compensate for any movement on the part of the shooter. This really does help out while shooting in low-light.
If you really intend on shooting a lot in low-light the best thing you can do is get a camera with the above features, but also one that uses a large sensor. While most point-and-shoot cameras do a much better job in low-light than they used to, there really is no substitution for a physically large sensor of a DSLR or Compact System Camera when shooting under low light levels.

I think the biggest low-light accomplishment is how modern cameras are able to capture starlight and galaxies with the right lenses.
While sensor size is important, choosing lenses with large apertures also helps to minimize sensor noise.  Look for lenses with f/2.8, f/1.8, or f/1.4 designations.
Of course you can just cheat.  Nikon's SB-910 or a Quantum bare-bulb works wonders in challenging light conditions.

Note, many compact cameras are now shipping with larger sensors.

  • Is LED flash used for taking pictures at low light?

I recently bought 4s iphone, currently when i take pics in the night or low light the image is not clear due to LED flash light. Does LED flash is used only for notification /alerts or is it mainly used for creating better pictures in low light?
    Thanks
    Ravi

or is it mainly used for creating better pictures in low light?
    That is correct.
    * Double check if there is a plastic film covering the camera and the flash.
** In my personal opinion, pictures using the flash in iPhone are of poor quality anyway.

  • Solar cell charging battery and load at the same time When there is Sun , When there is no sun , the battery take over and power up the Load

    Hi
Im currently doing a project using LabVIEW and myDAQ where i have to use the solar cell to charge the battery and turn on the load ( LED) when there is light
and once the the solar cell is unable to detect the light , the battery will power the load instead of the solar cell
i am having some problems with labview programing ( unable to work )
Does anyone has something similar that i could reference to ?
    Thanks

Good to see that you found the LabVIEW forum, but you have not added any more information than what you posted on the Reddit LabVIEW forum.
The people here will also need more information about what is not working, be as specific as possible.  I will also repeat that you can replace the inputs with controls and the outputs to indicators so you have more control over the code to test it.  Then introduce the real IO when you have the code working like you want it to.

Good grief!  I had not plugged the USB jack all the way into the headphone port on the iPod.  Having taken that action, the iPod shuffle works great.  My bad, as they say.

  • Suddenly shutdown when the battery is lower than 6%

suddenly shutdown when the battery is lower than 6% (sometimes lower than 10%)and can not power on anymore, you need to plug the AC to trigger to power on the phone.

Your battery gauge needs to be recalibrated. When the phone goes off, charge for just a couple of minutes, then run the battery down all the way. If it shuts off above 1% charge again for a couple of minutes, then run down again. Repeat until it actually goes off at 1%. Then charge for 4 hours with the wall charger without using the phone.
To prevent this happening again, about once a month run the battery all the way down until the phone shuts off, then charge to 100% with a wall charger. (This is actually recommended in Apple's iPhone tips, but they don't say why to do it. The "why" is to recalibrate the battery gauge.)

  • Random shutdowns - IT'S THE BATTERY, NOT THE LOGIC BOARD!!!!

    Hey,
Just got my battery replacement, and the shutdown problem is GONE. Here's how you verify - run your Macbook with the battery removed, on AC power - the problem disappears.
The tech told me that it is a short in the battery, which tells the PMU that there is no power (whether there is or not!)...anyway, I hope this is helpful to all of you!
P.S. If you're also getting the vertical lines at startup, that's a video driver issue - just zap the PRAM so you can boot, and once booted, change the resolution to something else and back to normal - it will fix the problem entirely.
    THERE IS HOPE!!!!

<<<dear ASPs! this is -NOT- true!!!! it is NOT the battery!>>>
probably thanks to you my ASP (DataQuest, Zurich Switzerland) only replaced my battery and handed back my MacBook unrepaired.
After the "repair" the problem at first was rare but after just three days I'm back at normal frequency of random shutdowns. I have to spend another two weeks waiting for my macbook. this time I'm sending it to Netherlands
I guess that it's really that badly calibrated thermal module causing these shutdowns. obviously the thermal module is irritated especially if you use your macbook often - so after 1-2 weeks of repair time the problem is barely apparent. (which causes unsuccessful repair - "testing after battery replacement worked fine" says ASP)

  • Iphone 5s: surprise shutdowns at lower battery %

    Iphone 5s; Version 8.1.1
As soon as my iphone was a one year old in November, 2014 I started having this issue. I have not been able to track a pattern as to when this happens.
Issue: When the battery is low enough: 25-40%, and I am trying to use my phone. It would suddenly hang and then shut down. When I try to turn it back on with the power key, the phone indicates no battery and asks for a plugin for charge. As soon as I plugin, the phone turns back on, and the battery is now low any more, it is at whatever percentage it was before it got shut down.
Is there any one out there with such an issue? I feel that there is a defect in the battery or a bug in software.
I am annoyed by this because I cannot trust my phone any more, it can power down randomly when I need it. Whats even more frustrating is that this problem started right after my warranty expired. I have owed iphone before, I am disappointed that the quality is degrading.

You should get your phone checked by visiting an Authorized Apple Service Provider or Apple Store next to your place,
or contact Apple Support and talk to them. They can check the battery online.
You can also visit this page to do that: iPhone - Contact Support - Apple Support
Click on Apple Support, then on ->Battery, Power &Charging ->Battery questions and troubleshooting, and follow the instructions.

  • Problems with random shutdown after replacing a swollen battery

    Hello all,
Perhaps one of you can help with this issue.
I'm using a Macbook Pro 17" mid-2007 model. A few months ago, the power disconnected from the machine when the battery had already run down and the machine did a hard shutdown. When I booted it back up there were serious problems with the display. Eventually it stopped working altogether. I took it for service and it was determined to by the NVIDIA graphics processor problem, so Apple replaced my motherboard.
When I got the machine back from servicing, there was a rattle in the right fan that gradually got worse. After a while the touchpad button stopped depressing in the center. I also experienced several random shutdowns while operating on battery power. I learned about the swelling battery issue with macbooks and ordered a replacement. By the time the replacement battery arrived my original battery was quite swollen. I'm concerned that the swelling battery may have warped the case a bit, leading to the fan noise.
I have now replaced the battery, but I'm still experiencing random shutdowns after 20+ minutes of use on battery power. I have done the RSS tests that were recommended in other forums and there doesn't seem to be any random shutdown problems when I'm plugged in -- only under battery power. My understanding is that a swelling battery can sometimes cause the battery to disengage from the electrical contacts on the MB, causing a sudden shutdown. I'm wondering why the problem is persisting now with a new battery? After one random shutdown, I tried to power up again using the battery, while pushing the battery into place at various angles, but I couldn't find any angle that would give power to the machine. The fan noise is also still present.
Can anyone offer an explanation or advise on any methods to overcome these random shutdowns? I have checked the console and the machine isn't registering any error when it shuts down, although when it restarts it says "DirectoryService[35] Improper shutdown detected"

Yep, it is video (or: or audio for video) so unless you're sure you need it (because you work or will work with the DVC Pro HD video/audio codec), you can remove the plug from its' folder and put it in your documents folder (don't trash it, I have no idea if it is necessary for non-DVC Pro HD users to have it installed too).
The WWW is littered with posts from people encountering bugs and crashreports with DVCPROHDAudio.plugin as the main suspect. Most of those posts seem to be from video people rather than audio folks.
    http://www.google.nl/search?q=DVCPROHDAudio.plugin&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=or g.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
But, if you get crashes and you see this one mentioned in the report, disable it, restart, and see if the problem's gone.

  • My iPod shuffle could be seen on iTunes, but it cannot be charged and don't play music. The battery light do not flash at all.

Like what I mentioned, the iPod do not work, it won't play music and the battery light do not flash.
But it shows in iTunes, and I could sync music into it.
I tried to reset all the settings of the iPod, and installed all the new software, but it does not work.
I don't know if it works before, my friend left it to me. I erased all the data she used before and syncronized all my music inside.
But it just never worked in my hand...
I really appreciate all feedbacks! Thanks and please answer this question if you have the similar situation!!

Are you using the USB docking cable that came with the iPod?  There are separate contact points for power and data, so it is possible for the cable to connect for data, but not for power.  Some third-party replacement cables may be of lower quality, if you do not have the original cable
However, it seems to be getting power, since the shuffle is operating when connected and you are able to sync when it is connected.  So I think your USB docking cable is working.
That leaves a problem with the USB port or a problem on the shuffle.
For the USB port, it may not be supplying sufficient power to charge the battery.  As a test, you should shut down (power off) the computer and disconnect all USB devices, including hub, except for standard keyboard and mouse (if normally used).  If the Mac is a laptop, connect its power adapter (so that it's not running on battery power).  Do this to reset the shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1655
Start up the Mac, run iTunes, and connect the shuffle to a direct USB port on the Mac.  Any difference...?
If that does not help, it may be a problem with the shuffle, such as a worn out battery.

  • HT1349 My computer won't turn on. Makes a low beeping noise that I've never heard but the screen doesn't turn on. The battery ran completely out but I've had it plugged in for 2 hours. Any thoughts?

I have a MacBook pro. After running the battery down, the computer won't turn on. It seems to cycle on but then makes low beeping noises and the battery indicator light blinks along with the beeps. I've had the computer charging for quite awhile. Any thoughts?

    UPDATE:
My computer now works but still has the loading bar at startup. Here is some advice for other mac users with the same problem. To get the computer to turn on again (but unfortunately still have the loading bar - you will need to fix this problem seperately) follow these instructions:
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer’s power cord and disconnect peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
This is called a SMC Reset and will hopefully get your computer back up and running (at least for the time being!)
Good luck to all those iMacers out there!

  • I just bought my macbook pro and it's charged up to 100% and is still plugged in but now shows the battery at 98%.  How is this possible when it's plugged in to the charger and the green light is on?

I just bought my macbook pro and it's charged up to 100% and is still plugged in but now shows the battery at 98%.  How is this possible when it's plugged in to the charger and the green light is on?

The system regularly lets the battery drop to about 95% when on the charger, then recharges to 100%.  This lets the batery exercise "just a little" all of the time and saves the recharge curcuits from overuse.
    Regualr occurence for me.
Also ... you need to let your battery work at least once per month.  Let it run down to 40%, but not less if you can at all avoid it.  Running thr battery fully dead will shorten the battery life significantly.

  • The other day, i was using my iphone 3gs 32gb to take pictures, thenit just shut off, the battery wa around 70-80%. Now it shuts down randomly as long as the screen is unlocked, there will be a chance it will shut off. I have tried draining and charging,

    Hi everyone,
I was playing games on my 3gs the other day and then it shut off randomly and the screen slowly faded away the battery was at about 70%
now it will just turn off randomly without warning unless plug into a power source and wont turn on after shutting off unless plugged in
I have tried restoring it, putting it in a dehumidifier and also charging overnight
I have tried to drain the battery but it wont work because it will shut down whilst i am draining the battery
One time today i turned it off and left it for a few hours, the battery was 89% but when i turned it back on a few hours late it showed the plug into power sign
It charged to about 33% and then a few mins later it went up to 100%
Could this be a battey percentage sensor problem?
It anyone has an idea of what might be going on please tell me, it would be greatly apreciated
Also: i am on ios 5.1.1 and NOT jailbroken
    Thanks
    Kelby

I had major issues with the iPhone 4s battery, however it’s resolved.
The tech who set the phone up at the Apple store did so with little training.
if you have a mobile me account. First go and move all your data to the cloud by going on your computer and logging in at me.com/move. The cloud has replaced mobile me, so there is no need for those two accounts
Also make sure that for any of your email accounts you set them up to fetch, not push. My tech person set them all to have the email servers push data to the phone. The new iphone4s antenna is extremely strong so it will continually try to access stuff that is pushed–***** a lot of battery life doing this. It makes it worse if you have exchange 2010 accounts. Something about changes made to exchange really suck battery life from devices that access such accounts.
turning of locator and the push notifications from facebook--they have a lot!

  • My phone seems to delete contacts and info when the battery gets low, is there a solution to this issue?!

After the most recent update, I've noticed a couple MAJOR changes! 1) The battery life can barely make it through half the day. I have to keep charging it no matter how little I use it. I've even turned off apps running in the background, it didn't make much difference. And 2) When the battery gets really low, at the 10% mark, it deletes contacts and settings. I've lost so many contacts all of the sudden and I constantly have to restore my iPhone. It's so frustrating! And when the battery gets low, it also deletes my e-mail account to receive e-mails on the phone. I'm tired of having to constantly reset my phone carry a charger with me, it's not reliable any longer and I'm not sure why. Help??

Here is some information on the applecare +:
    http://www.apple.com/support/products/iphone.html
It appears that you have to buy the applecare within 30 days of buying your phone - you said that your phone warranty is almost over, so when did you buy it??? That could be the explanation for the error.
