Randomly losing network connection over wireless

Shortly after installing the 10.4.5 software update, my G4 iBook with built-in Airport Extreme card has been losing connection with increasing frequency. Built-in Ethernet use is unaffected. I'm calling this problem thrash-and-drop.
1. When it's losing signal, processor activity goes through the roof. I had Activity Monitor running during a thrash-and-drop. kernel_task CPU consumption goes from under 1% before the event, to over 80% during the thrashing, and back under 1% after the thrashing stops. The activity is so bad the cursor can't be controlled: using the track pad sends the pointer all over the screen or nowhere at all.
2. This has been observed to occur with two different wireless base stations: A Linksys WRT54G and an older SMC 802.11b router. Either router is within 10 feet of the computer. Only one is running at a time. There are no other base stations in range.
3. Another iBook G4 (OS 10.3, Airport Extreme card (not built-in)), sitting next to it, shows no change and its wireless behavior is unaffected.
Initially, this seemed more likely to happen when Safari was loading Flash-heavy pages. And after thrashing and dropping a connection, it was able to reconnect after either a reboot or a five minute sleep. Currently, it can't connect to a base station for more than a minute. Most recently, it thrashed and dropped while I was selecting the base station to use. This is true regardless of the application running. In fact, it will thrash-and-drop when there are no user applications running at all, after a fresh reboot.
I've tried the following things to address the problem. None have affected the thrash-and-drop problem. Admittedly, most of this is random:
1. Back up and delete network preferences in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
2. Turn off IPv6 in System Preferences/Network
3. Back up and delete network preferences in ~/Library/Preferences (com.apple.NetInfoManager.plist and com.apple.NetworkUtility.plist)
Has anybody else seen this problem? I want to blame it on the 10.4.5 upgrade but I haven't seen anybody else complaining about 10.4.5 doing this to them. If there's something I can do to fix this in a software setting, I'd much prefer that to yet another roadtrip to the Apple store.

Hi!
I have the same problem of randomly losing network connection over wireless, though mine is hardly related to surfing.
I have an external storage drive in which I use for backup of my stuff, and I access the drive via my modem, using the airport. Of late, I noticed that when copying files from my iBook to the external drive, the connection would suddenly drop before the transfer is completed. This began to occur with increasing frequency, particularly when transferring large files.
I have since abandoned wireless connection, and reverted to my trusty cable. Still, I admit that I'm really curious about the cause of the apparent lack of reliability with my wireless connection. Has it something to do with the airport?

  • Losing internet connection over wireless

    Hi
I got my iMac last Friday and since then I have been having two very annoying wireless bugs.
    1. My Mac does not connect to my wireless network automatically on start-up.
    2. I will be surfing away happily when I will suddenly loss all internet access, I’m still connected to my wireless network I still have a decent 5 or 6 bar connection but I just can access the internet. It generally comes back after 30 to 40 seconds but twice I have had to restart to get the connection back.
Does anyone have any advice on this.
I’m with Eircom broadband and use a netopia wireless router with WEP security. I could really use some help.

  • Losing network connection (NOT WIRELESS) every 3 months

About every three months I get a 169 IP which I am told is a computer assigned "bad" ie non functional IP address.
The first timewas last november and the cable company spent 2 hours here and said cable was ok- while talking to apple- they never solved it it just came back on- it did it again today and when I clicked renew dhcp lease it would dim out but not reset the IP. after about 15 minutes I got a 171 IP .
    what cauises this ??
my airport is "not configured (I do not use it) and blue tooth is turned off.

    Hi.
I had an almost identical problem for several weeks, and I always knew everything was OK with my Mac. The problem turned out to be, as I suspected, on my ISP's side: The company had took over a rival ISP, and they were merging their networks.
Curiously, the WinPC users had no problems (including myself, as I had no trouble with my XP system during that time), while other Mac user in my area experienced the same problems I had with my Mac.

  • Imacs randomly dripping network connection

I have 3 imacs that just drop the network connection. If I leave them alone, they will reconnect some 5 - 10 minutes earlier.
They range anywhere from 10 minutes to approx 1 hour to drop the connection and theis happens randomly.

  • Hyper V virtual machine randomly loses network connectivity

I have an extremely odd issue happening on one of my Hyper-V virtual machines.  For no apparent reason and completely sporadically my virtual machine will lose all network connectivity.  It is a linux Vyatta firewall image.  Digging through
the logs shows nothing at all when the machine actually goes offline, but when the machine starts back up I just get a Warning stating the network driver on my virtual machine loaded but has a different version from the server.  Server Version 3.2 Client
    version 0.2
I've ran the integrated services setup disk and nothing has fixed this.  When the VM loses connectivity it is for no apparent reason, sometimes at 1am sometimes at noon, just happens.  The only solution is to reboot the VM to bring it back online.
Has anyone else seen this or know of a fix for it?  Its starting to slowly drive me insane!
    Hyper V Server - Windows Server 2008 R2 - Hyper V Manager Version 6.1.7601.17514
VM - Linux Vyatta Core 6.3

I tried downloading new integrated services disk setup for linux, but Vyatta wouldn't work with it so I was kind of stuck there.  And not sure where you are talking about changing NIC to legacy at.  I did disable some TCP chimpney settings as
per an article I found, but not sure if it will fix it or not.  Sometimes the machine will stay on for a month before losing network connection and sometimes it comes in spurts and happens like 3-4 times over a couple days.  Its really odd

  • WRT54G. Computer sees network but can't connect over wireless

So I have a WRT54G router since a couple of years now.  Laptop (Win7 64bit), ipod, ipad, phones can connect to it without a problem, but new computer (Win7 64bit) can't.  I can connect the PC via ethernet without a problem though.
I powercycled my devices, I changed broadcasting options off and then back on, changed my security mode, tried the MAC Cloning (after doing the MAC Cloning, I lost internet connectivity even through ethernet), resetted my security settings, changed SSID, I'm broadcasting through channel 11 2.462.  I also tried deleting the HomeGroup
Important fact: the network is in the list of available wireless network, but Signal Strength is No Signal and I can't connect to it.
My network adapter is ASUS 802.11n Wireless LAN Card, drivers are up to date.
I've upgraded to the latest router firmware.
    I use a cable ISP.
I've been looking at everyone else's posts with similar problem but none of the suggestions fixed my problem.  Anyone has an idea?  I'm no techie so I may be missing something important/obvious...   Thanks a lot for replies (please don't hijack!)

As the concern is with your wireless connection and you have updated the firmware of the Router so once reset and reconfigure the Router... Since you are using Cable Connection refer the link for the configuration: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&vw=1&articleid=3686
As far as the wireless is concern make the channel to 6, 9 and 11...
Under Advanced Wireless Settings change Beacon Interval to 75, Fragmentation Threshold to 2306, RTS Threshold to 2307...

  • All in One Printer, losing network connection

I have an HP Photosmart, 5510.  It's only about a year old but is now always losing the network connection.  I have it set up properly (it has actually worked!) to the wireless router.  Most times now when I need to print, it tells me the printer won't communicate with the computer.  I have taken it off the network, put it back on, and it says it is all connected.  I have printed out the network status page, all is okay, no problems found.  Why then am I still unable to print? This is very frustrating.
I have it set up to my Macbook Pro and my iPad.  It has previously worked on both devices, but I can't seem to get it back to working order now.
I have looked at the forum here and have seen many many people with the same problem, but most seem to be using a Windows operating system.  Any ideas on what to do?  I really need to print!!
    This question was solved.

I feel that perhaps either my post was in haste or in error since I did not see the above solution you provided when I posted this.  I do not mind helping you out with router and network problems either way, but since you do not know the name of your router, it will be hard for me to assist with that.  I will say, you can always contact your internet service provider and have them check for a firmware update if you have to reset the router that often. If you look on the back of the router you will see little numbers (specifically a model number).
Is that IP address that of the router or the printer?
Either way, I am very happy to hear you were able to get it working again.  If you need any more assistance let me know which device has that IP address and at least a model number so I can look up your type of router and let you know if a firmware is available.  I'm happy to help!
Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" if I helped solve your problem.

  • IMac keeps losing network connection

My iMac keeps losing the connection to my AirPort very sporadically, but very often. I keep having to open Network Assistant, choose the AirPort and the network, and re-enter the password. I then get a message that my network connection appears to be working correctly, which it then is. This could happen several times in a few hours.
I have tried creating a new network, but it still happens. We have 6 other devices on this network and do not have a problem with those devices.
    Any advice?

here's a (very crude) screen shot of an iStumbler scan on my MBP
my network is called pegasus. see that it broadcasts on channel 11 (2.4 GHz band) ? see also that there are six other networks broadcasting on the same channel ? now, ideally i would change my channel to broadcast on "5" or "6", but since there are so many networks around, even those would give me interference from other networks nearby.
in the end, i decided to hardwire (using ethernet cables) most of my devices to my router (time capsule) in order to avoid interference alltogether.
also, there could be closed (hidden) networks around that only KisMac would be able to pick up.
lastly, as the read about *wireless interference* revealed, there are other sources that could interfere with your network performance: microwave ovens, cordless phones - heck, even enabling bluetooth on your very own Mac could be a source.
as an alternative to running ethernet cables throughout your place, you could consider *powerline adapters* _*such as these*_.

  • Losing network connection on T61 but still showing that I am connected

    Hello All,
I am having network connection issues with my T61. On any network I connect to, my downloads will randomly stop, or videos I am watching will stop loading, same with online radio, etc...
The connection will resume after about 30 seconds of being lost but is a major pain especially if I am on a vpn and have to log back in.
My network connection never reports any problems and the icons still show that I am connected.
I have reinstalled all my drivers, ran multiple spyware/virus detection, and tried to trace my network activity with no luck.
The interesting part is that if I am using skype voice my issues disappear. It seems as though the deluge of packets sent by skype forces my connection to stay alive.
Any thoughts? (other than talk to someone on skype all day)
Edit: This happens while using wireless and LAN connection

Make sure data roaming and cellular data is turned off.  If you don't want to receive calls or SMS then put your phone in airplane mode and reactivate WiFi

  • Losing network connection (phone, text, data)

For the past couple of weeks I have had problems losing my network connection affecting phone calls, text messages and data access. The problems seem to be occurring more frequently, and have not been able to identify a consistent pattern yet.
Phone: On 2-3 occasions recently, I have had calls dropped.  I see that I have no [phone] network connection.  In each case I've been in a location where I frequently make calls.  Twice this was while on a major freeway in the SF Bay Area.  In each case I do get a signal back, but it takes several minutes until I re-acquire a signal.
Text:  On multiple occasions (3-4 in the past week), I have tried to send text messages from my office (in San Jose), where I have not had problems in the past.  After waiting for several minutes to re-acquire a signal, I re-booted my phone and my text messages were sent as soon as the phone re-booted.  Note:  changing the phone to airplane mode and then off, did not resolve the problem.
Data:  On multiple occasions (8-10 times in the past couple of weeks), I noticed that my phone shows "4G", but no arrows and I have no data access (i.e. no access via web browser, can't use any email apps, can't use any apps that use data access).  Once I lose the data connection, it never re-acquires the network even after moving and/or waiting in excess of an hour.  The only way to re-acquire data is to re-boot my phone.
This seem to have started 2-3 weeks ago, but definitely getting worse over the past week - very, very frustrating!
Using Samsung S4, running Android 4.4.2.  I don't recall installing any new apps or new O/S versions in the past couple of weeks, though many updates auto-installed.

I tried removing/replace the Sim card.  Still have the problem.
I got really frustrated with this and after spending over an hour on the phone with technical support and then with Assurion, I got them to replace my  phone, with a replacement S4.   Spent another couple of hours getting my phone reconfigured, including having to spend another half an hour on the phone with technical support because the new phone wasn’t activating on the network.   And, still have the same problem on two consecutive days where the phone hangs when I try to make a call at the end of the day.  (Though I had been able to make a couple of calls during the day).
    So:
    ·         It fails in safe mode
    ·         It fails if I set the network to LTE/CDMA rather than Global
    ·         It fails after re-seating the Sim card
    ·         It fails with a replacement device
What’s going on?  How do I fix this?

  • Randomly Dropped Network Connections WRT54GR

Two wireless notebooks running Vista, two wired desktops running Win2k Pro. Router is used for internet connection and networking. (Assigned IP addresses) All devices maintain steady internet connection. So far so good.
But network connection is not steady. If I reset the router by powering off and on, everything is fine for a while, all computers see each other. But within a random space of time they stop seeing each other consistently. I then have to do a power off/on.
New to wireless and home networking. Is this just to be expected? Any ideas of how to fix the problem?
    Thanks!

I think you should disable all the firewalls on these computer and reduce the MTU on the router to 1365, beacon interval to 50 and RTS and Fragmentation threshold by 40 each.

  • Losing network connection and NIC acts weird from warm/hot weather/temperatures?

    Hello.
Is there a known issue on MSI P43 NEO3-F (MSI-7514) motherboards' onboard RealTek RTL8168C (P)/8111C(P) PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC network disconnecting and acting weird during warm/hot weather?
I noticed lately and back on 1/11/2009 night when weather got warm/hot (e.g., my room can get over 85F degrees, but lately it has been 80F degrees), my network would lose its connection. See http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5580/screenshots.gif for a few SpeedFan's sensor readings when the incidents occurred. I have never seen this happen when the weather is cooler (60-70F degrees in my room).
I also think this only happens if I am using the PC lightly (nothing intensive) like watching fullscreen videos (video overlay), surfing the Web, etc. I don't see any errors or evidences that it happens when idled (e.g., asleep or out). Uptime doesn't seem to matter since I have seen days to 3.5 hours.
I tried upgrading network driver twice (e.g., Realtek_XP_5714_0219 from
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false ...), disabling Kerio Personal Firewall v2.1.5 (XP's disabled already), releasing and renewing IP address (works, but still no network -- can't even ping my router!), unplugging and replugging the cat5 cable (do see the network port lights on), touching the network jack and hardware inside and outside of the case (not hot), trying another cat5 cable and a network port on a switch instead router's), changing from "Minimal Power Management" to full power (no underclocking/slowing down when idled), etc.
    During the disconnections, I tried:
    C:\>tracert 192.168.0.1
Tracing route to 192.168.0.1 over a maximum of 30 hops

I also noticed the disconnections usually start with red X icon in my taskbar with its bubble and then later the long disconnection even though no red X (1 GB and connected). If I were to disconnect the cat5 cable from NIC, then it wouldn't even detect it is missing the cable!
The only way to fix this was to reboot (best way and last longer) OR disable network connection and re-enable it (Windows XP's Network Connections) or the NIC itself (Device Manager), but that doesn't always last long (maybe a minute). Example of my pings right after disabling and re-enabling NIC:
    C:\>ping 192.168.0.1 -t
Pinging 192.168.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Force your NIC to run at 100Mbps full duplex and see how it goes.
Check your router / switch ports as well as cables.
I will try 100 Mbps if it happens again. So far, it hasn't occurred after installing the driver supplied by MSI's Web site and not RealTek's Web site. The room temperatures even got warmer like 83F degrees.
As for router and switch, what am I checking for? Other computers didn't have any problems. As for cat5 cables, I already tried another one like I said in my original post.

  • ATV keeps disconnecting and losing network connection

I konw this has been posted on seval discussion boards, but the answers are all over the place.  I have been watching Netflix over the last several weeks and noticed that almost routinely my ATV will stop playing and go back to the home screen.  Sometimes I am able to resume where I left off but more often it loses my network connection.  I have to unplug ATV or go through the menue and reset.
I have not had this problem until recently.  I have done all of the disconnecting, checking cables, restarting router, etc.  Nothing seems to work.  I even cancelled my Netflix subscription because I thought it was their issue.  However, I have learned that it must be the ATV itself.  I love my ATV, but I can't seem to figute out why this is happening.  I don't have any other issues with WiFi in my house or with any other devices.
Any ideas if this is a software update issue?  I did read that people were having issues after the latest software update.

We've had our ATV for about a year and it's always worked perfectly. But every day for the last five days it has needed to be reset each day. Doesn't matter if we are trying Netflix, YouTube, or Podcasts it will say "can't connect to server, try later." So we will either unplug it and plug it back in or select reset from the general menu then everything works again. Can't figure out why it's doing this. All software is up-to-date.

  • Wired PC losing network connection to AE

I have an Airport Extreme, a Power Book (wireless), and a destop top PC.
I hook up the AE to my ethernet jack, and the PB connects just fine.
I hook up my PC through wired network connection on the AE, and I get a "network cable unplugged" error on the PC. All the while my PB is doing just fine.
I then bypass the AE, and plug the PC directly into the wall, and my PC connects just fine, so it doesn't seem to be a problem with my NIC, driver issue, or bad cable.
The other funny thing is this is a new problem. All three components WERE working just fine.
Any thoughts as to what I'm doing wrong?

Check your settings against this guide:
