Range eMac:  Card v. Airport Express v. Base Station

Hi,
Want to go wireless in my home with my eMac.
Wondering about the respective ranges of the: Airport Extreme Card, Airport Express Base Station and the Airport Extreme Base Station.
I'm mainly going to be connecting with my PC notebook from work.
I'm thinking that the airport antenna built into my eMac should compete well with the signal put out by the Airport Express Base Station and the Airport Extreme Base Station.
Am I horribly deluded (about this anyway)?

Mcfugu,
If you're sure you want your eMac to go wireless. I'm just asking you to think twice about it, will it give any benefit ?
Will you need the Airport Express ?, or Airport Extreme Base Station ? This will depend on whether you want to use Airtunes (limiting where your wireless range will be) and whether you want to limit all your computers to have to connect to the network over wireless (AXBS has Ethernet ports for computers to connect to).
As your original question was just about range, probably just for the PC laptop you bring home from work, you'll have to work out how far you want the wireless range to extend.
AE has a very small antenna, and by it's very nature, is placed very low down on the wall (wireless devices like high up, above desks, furniture, etc).
AXBS is slightly better, and usually has a better placement.
If you do use the AX in your eMac, I'm sure it'll have no problem with wireless range, I think the antenna goes round the screen, definitely big enough.
So only queston(s): How far does the wireless range need to extend ? And what sort of materials are in the way (walls, fish tanks, pipes, microwaves, etc)

  • 802.11n and Airport Express iTunes Base station Help me ?

I'll try to keep this simple :
In my Office I have a 24" iMac Intel and the
802.11n resides also in my Office
About 40ft away is my Den which resides:
My MacBook Pro 17" Intel and a Airport Express iTunes
    Base Station
Going Back to the 802.11n I have a 2.0 USB AC Powered
Hub connected to the USB port on the back of the 802.11n
of which  said is OK to do
Connected to the USB on the back of the 802.11n:
is a Epson R200 USB InkJet Printer and also on that
Hub is a Lacie Porche 500gb External USB Hard Drive
Again  says is Ok to do
The problem I'm having is that the Cable Modem is
in my Office and is connected via Ethernet to the 802.11n
and I can get a strong connection to the internet
on my iMac 24" Intel in my Office but the MBP 17"
in my Den is having issues getting onto the Internet
now about a week ago I spent 8hrs on the phone W/Apple
about such issues so we erased all the information in
the Disk Utility and started over with the information
in the 802.11n and the iTunes Base Station Express
this has helped until the recent FirmWare Update that
Apple Released a few days ago,
I've tried to actual bring my MBP 17" into the Office
and it gets a better Internet signal than in the Den,
but this wasn't the way it was before the FirmWare Update
Any Suggestions on what I can do to fix this situation
As all worked well with the Express iTunes in the Den
and the 802.11n in the Office and the Cable Modem has
always been in the Office ?
P.S> One problem I forgot to mention is I keep dropping
The Macbook Pro 17" and a Lacie 400gb Hard Drive which is
connected directly to the MBP 17" USB Port which keeps
dropping from my iMac 24" networking it will be working
fine and then I get a message stating that either or both
the MBP 17" and the Lacie Disk (400gb) is Disconnecting
from iMac 24" and then the same will happen on the
MBP 17" with the iMac 24" and any connected drives I'm
sharing from the iMac 24" ?
I'm having a connection problem and I can't get to the
bottom of it and I need some help please

i cannot install airport utility 5.6 onto my computer although i need it to configure an older airport express and base station

Here is my method.. the software is free that is required.. always a good point.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Airport Express extending Base Station network very slow.

    Hi,
I have an Airport Extreme Base Station and an Express, both of which are 802.11N. Currently I have my express connected and extending the network hosted by the Base Station but when I am in a location where I use the Airport Express rather than the Base Station it is extremely slow. If I am on a call on Skype for example the calls drop constantly or I have latencies over 2000 if I am playing a game. But Once I am in range of the Base Station my wi-fi is great. Anybody have any ideas as to why?

What are the steps to extend the network using the Airport Exprss with a Linksys router? I have the Airport Express working with my network (a Linksys WRT54G) but have never attempted to use it to extend the network; instead, it just works for Airtunes currently.
In addition, I can't seem to get Airport Express Assistant to work on my Macbook Pro. It says there's an error when it tries to connect to my Airport card, which is odd, since it works fine.
    Any ideas?

  • Printing with Airport Express as Base Station

That is, I think our Airport Express is our base station. It's the only thing we have, and we can connect to the internet just fine, but it doesn't show up in the Airport Utility.
The main problem is printing through the Airport Express. Our printer prints fine when plugged into the USB on the ibook but it won't print from the USB on the Airport Express.
We can see the printer located on our wireless network but when we try to print the print center says that printing has stopped with an error of level one, or category one or something. I do see the appropriate printer driver on the list when I add the printer (I think it's an Epson C40ux, but I'm doing this from memory) and that's set correctly. I've got the unofficial list of printers that work and don't work and I see that some printers may need other drivers to work from the wireless network. There must be other things to check, but I'm a little new at this. It seems like this would be a common problem but I'm not seeing many posts like this so if anyone has a moment and any ideas I'd be grateful. Thanks. Mark
Ibook   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   Airport Express

Thanks... I will try that first. I've also been advised to delete the network and add a new one with the printer connected... but your idea is simpler.

  • Dedicating an Airport Express Remote Base Station to a BB Curve

    Hello all,
Please forgive me if this has been answered in another thread. I have been searching for the last week or so and have found that many people are experiencing the same frustration with the BB Curve and H@H (UMA) service. Someone recently suggested that I dedicate the Remote Base Station to my BB Curve so as to grant the UMA a fighting chance (my network consists of one Main and one Remote base station). In other words, the problem, as I understand it, is that UMA/voice data gets kicked off the network in favor of true data. If I can dedicate my extra (remote base station) airport express to my Blackberry, then the UMA should work more reliably.
    Sooo...here is my question:
How do I assign my remote base station (set-up through WDS) to serve only my Blackberry Curve? Should I not do this? How do I find my Curve's MAC and IP address? Which address do I need? So on and so forth...
    Thank you all who help.
    james

No one seems to know what's going on! I'll retract it, then. Thank you for your consideration.

  • Airport Express - Extreme Base Station - MacBook Connection PLEASE HELP!

Ok, i thought i had a pretty good idea of what i was doing with my mac stuff but apparently not, can someone talk me through how to set up the following - i've google and searched forums far and wide and cannot seem to find a simple walk through guide, even read the manual. The Airport Express manual online still says you can only stream to one device at a time.
I have an Airport Extreme Base Station broadcasting a DSL connection from a router - works a treat. I also have 1TB WD Hard Drive plugged into the Base Station which works as a shared AirDisk - also works a treat. I have two stereos at each end of the house and got my hands on two Airport Express devices (Models: A1084 and A1088).
I've gone through every possible scenario in setting these up to join the network but once they're 'joined' there no sign of them, and they no longer show up in my Airport Utility so can no longer configure them, thus having to reset them and start again.
I've tried a) setting up a WDS network, the base station as the main and the express' units as remote. No show in iTunes and no real show of being on the network at all; and b) tried leaving the existing network as is and joining the express' to that, again, they supposedly 'join' (i assume, only because they no longer show up as their own network) but do not show up in iTunes. As far as I've tested and found, I have the latest of all versions of software / firmware available, including Leopard, iTunes and Airport Utility... HELP! It's driving me MAD! And a thousand thank you's in advance...

Thanks for your help, after trouble shooting to no end, I've discovered it has something to do with the WEP password I was using and after reading through many a support article I found this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2098?viewlocale=en_US - however, the $ sign doesn't seem to work to when setting up the Express' (even tried making the password the very one used in that article) and when I set the network up initially, it seemed my flatmates PC's only joined the network if I used a WEP password, rather than a WPA that i'd rather use.
Any suggestions here? Do I have to use a WEP password to let Windows join?

  • I accidentally set my airport express to base station when it should be my time capsule and can't set it back

    I'm an idiot!
I have my Time Capsule as my base station. I have two Aiport Exrpres' that connect to them.
One of the AE's was not working right, so I went it, did a soft reset, and using the Airport Utility, I accidentally identified the AE as the base station.
I've now gotten the Time Capsule set as the base station, and of of the AE's working off of it...however, when I plug the other AE in, it trumps the Time Capsule and shows it as the base station, and then the TC doesn't work.
I've tried doing a soft reset, and then hitting forget, but I can't figure out how to how it show as the child to the parent (the TC), as the other AE does.
    Help!!
    Thank you,
    Dennis

Thank you, that seems to have done the trick...I knew Apple would be much easier than Windows!
    I appreciate your help!
    Dennis

  • Apple AirPort Express wireless base station & aol uk

HI want to get this base station but need to know if it will work with my ISP AOL any help please greatly received thanks John

If AOL provides a modem to UK customers, then yes it will work. For more info:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1419772?start=0&tstart=0
However, if it doesn't, you can still make it work. All you have to do is purchase an ADSL2+ modem such as:
http://www.ebuyer.com/262957-tp-link-adsl-modem-router-1x-ethernet-port-td-8816 (don't take this link as an endorsement, I have no idea whether it will work).

  • Error when trying to connect Airport Express to Base Station

I came home today and the light was flashing amber on my Express. Tried to re-connect but keep getting this message: "There was an error setting up this wireless device for WDS. Quit Airport Utility and try again." I have, several times and it still won't connect. Got any ideas? My wireless router is the older Apple version flying saucer.
    Thanks....

Have you tried using a WEP password for your wireless network instead of a WPA one? That fixed it for me.

  • Can you connect an iMac to a Lynksys router without an airport express or base?

can you connect an iMac to a Lynksys router without an airport express or base? I tried running it from cable>modem>router and it doesn't sling to the iMac. The airport card in the Mac does seem to be on, and there is a network connection set up. It's an intel iMac7,1.
At my house I have the same configuration going to an old Mac laptop and it works fine.
    Any ideas? Thanks

    Csound1--
If you mean does the network appear on the Mac when I look for it, then yes.
I think my friend had her wifi network set up properly, or it wouldn't be showing in the list of networks when I check.
    the router is a Lynksys WRT160N V3.
I don't think she has the security code so I can check what's actually hooked up (the network name on screen at least appears to be locked). She's had the computer out to the shop and back recently and has never even run anything off the wireless.
I have a feeling I'm going to have to call her cable provider to sort it out. I'm hoping to avoid that. I don't know Mac at all. I could troubleshoot on my PC.
Ultimately, I want to be able to hook a Roku box to her TV to run Netflix.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to extend the range with a second Airport Express? Do I need a DSL cable?

How to extend the range with a second Airport Express? Do I need a DSL cable?

Thanks, now we need a bit more information, please, in order to provide you with the correct information that you need.
I assume that you already have one AirPort Express.....either a model A1264 or A1392.....set up and operating OK, is that correct?
If yes, you can extend the network either by using wireless or an Ethernet cable with a second AirPort Express.....either the A1264 or A1392 model. A wired connection is the way to go, if possible, since it provides better performance.  But, wireless might work OK for you if you want to try that.
Let us know "how" you want to extend......wireless or wired?

  • What is the range output on the airport express?

What is the range output on the airport express?

Loaded question. It's 150 feet or so, but for most folks, this is a meaningless number.
Measurements like this are taken in a very large area like an aircraft hanger with no obstructions in the signal path.
A typical sheetrock wall in a home will absorb 15-20% of signal or more. A ceiling will absorb even more. So, after a few walls or a ceiling and a wall, more than half of the signal is probably lost. That's about as many obstructions that the signal can penetrate and still deliver a decent quality signal with some speed.
It's nice to know that the signal will go 150 feet or so, but few of us have houses with no walls or ceilings.

  • How do I make my new Airport Extreme a base station?

I have been using an Airport Extreme (5th generation) as my base station router for a few years. I set the main network for my and my wife's use and created a guest network for when my sons visited and needed to use the wi-fi connection. I used passwords for both networks. Today I purchased a new 802.11 ac Airport Extreme. I unplugged the 5h gen. Extreme and plugged in the new Extreme. After a short hunt, my new 27" (late 2013) iMac found the new Extreme and had me set up a name and a password for it using Airport Utility. I was expecting it to ask if I wanted to set up a guest network, but it did not. I was expecting it to ask since I believe that is what happened when I installed my 5th gen Extreme a few years ago. For the 5th gen Extreme, I had to enter a password to protect settings on the Extreme, a WPA2 password for my main network and another password for my guest network. It took about 10 minutes to set up. For this new Airport Extreme I entered just one password. It took about 2 to 3 minutes for the entire setup. When I checked the menu in the Airport Utility under "Base Station", all lines are grayed out. Under the File Menu in Airport Utility, "Configure Other" is available, but "Import Configuration file" and "Export Configuration file" are also grayed out. I checked Network Settings in System Preferences and I see my new network name in the Wi-Fi menu and under the "Advanced..." button, I see the old and new Networks listed in the "Preferred networks" box.
So, how do I get the new Airport Extreme to act as the Base station and be able to enter a guest network? Does it require me to delete the old Network name from the Advanced... button page in System Preferences > Network Settings? Will I just have to start all over with the new Extreme to make it a base station?

    Hello Leo,
I'm not at home so can't confirm but I can only assume that maybe some of the "old" settings in airport utility have changed, and simplified.  Hence why you probably only need one password.
When I bought the new "tower" like AirPort Extreme, I just plugged it into the Ethernet, powered it on with the previous generation Extreme in place and in Airport Utility it just asked me if I wanted to copy the settings to the newer device, which included a few "port forwarding" settings.  All done in this sequence.  I didn't have guest network set up but you can still set up guest network under wireless in Airport Utility, hope this helps!
