Range Extender - SMC Broadband router

Hi,
if found some postings on how to extend your Wifi range combining Linksys and AE, but how about other WiFi solutions?
For instance, i've a SMC Barricade Broadband router (SMC7004AWBR).
Will this also work?
Regards,
Roger

Hi Roger
To extend your wifi network using an AE you must have the capability to operate WDS on your second router. If your router has it then you are in luck, not very many do, if not then its a no

  • Range Extender from old Router/Modem.

    Hi guys,
I am trying t find some information on my router. I have a Sky Broadband router and the signal does not project far enough. I am trying to set up a Linksys BEFW11S4 ver. 4 as a range extender... this can't be connected to anything (because of positioning) but the power. In lamens terms as I am not a networking guru, is this possible?
    All help appreciated.
    Dean

BEFW11S4 is a router and can't be used as a wireless extender. You have to plug it to the Sky router using ethernet to use its wireless capability. You need to cascade the routers for that matter. It's either you employ LAN-LAN connection or Internet-LAN. You pick one.
    Here's the procedure.

  • Range Extender for WRT300n Router

I set up a wireless network with the WRT300n router and the WMP-N PCI Adapter in a remote desktop.  There is marginal signal strength and the connection goes in and out.  My question is:  Is there a range extender available for this router?  Because if there isn't, then I've wasted several hundred dollars for this equipment!!!

Just what sort of distance are you talking about between the WRT and the PC? THis model already has extended range over most anything else...
    1. You may want to think about a repeater between the two
    2. You may want to think about directional antennae

  • Can I use Netgear powerline range extender with Actiontec router M1424WR-D?

We have been using FIOS internet happily with an Actiontec router (M1424WR-D) since 2008, but we have a 'dead zone' in a remote part of our home. I am attempting to install a Netgear Powerline AV 200 Wireless N-Extender kit in the dead zone room, but have not been successful. If I give a unique SSID to the extender, and do not set any encryption, I am able to have wireless connection in the room, but having unprotected wireless connection is unacceptable to me. If I use the same SSID for extender and Actiontec router, and use the same encryption key for the extender as is used on the Actiontec router, then I no longer have wireless connection in the room. I hope someone can provide some help in understanding what it is I'm doing wrong in setting up this powerline extender. Should the extender have the same SSID and encryption key? Should it be a different one? Thanks for any help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Great news! At last I finally have been able to get a Netgear Powerline AV200 Wireless-N Extender Kit to provide wifi in the 'dead zone' in our house, and I was able to secure the network with an encryption key which I set up wirelessly, instead of relying on the 'wired' security option offered by the kit (a push-button on the side of the extender box). None of the phone techs at Netgear were able to figure out why we could not get the kit to work properly to begin with, and I finally gave up on the phone techs.
For anyone interested in using this product and who needs to set it up with a non-Netgear router, or a router that does not have a WPS button on it, please be aware that the resource CD in the box may be out of date. You will need to go to Netgear's website and download the Powerline Utility software for your device directly from the website. You will need to supply your product serial number in order to get the download. It is important to have this up-to-date software. I discovered that the up-to-date software downloaded from Netgear functioned more smoothly and allowed me to set up my encryption effortlessly. After forcing a factory reset on the extender and removing the device IP addresses associated with the initial unsuccessful attempt to create a secure network, I was able to set up the extender and secure it with absolutely no problem. The up-to-date software seemed to be the critical factor. The product seems to be working really well now and so far we are happy with it.
A word of caution when dealing with Netgear's phone techs. On some occasions when I phoned into Netgear my case was farmed out to a company called i-Yogi. I had a disturbing experience with one of the techs at i-Yogi. One of the i-Yogi techs said he could help me to set up encryption on my network using the AV200 extender, but that he needed first to gain remote access to my laptop. He also wanted access to another laptop in our house in addition to the one I was working from. This seemed odd and I refused to allow access to the second laptop. After gaining remote access he noted that I was using Norton 360 and he claimed that it was not working with my XP operating system and attempted to sell me a copy of McAfee security software at a reduced rate. He became very pushy about this. I refused to engage in this purchase and insisted that he return to the task of troubleshooting my encryption issue. At this point he still had not once attended to the configuration of the extender settings at all, but even so he refused to assist me, saying that it was not his problem that my network was not secured. It was not a good experience, and I believe he had a totally different agenda than dealing with my technical issue.

  • RE2000 Range Extender possibly bootlooping

    Hello,
I purchased the RE2000 range extender last weekend. Worked well for a few days and I moved it to a new location. Plugged it in and now the green light on top blinks constantly for a about 15-25s. Then the light will go out and the ethernet light will light up for a second. Then the green light on top starts to blink again for 15-25s. Then repeat. I think it may be stuck in a bootloop and I need help cause there is no quick troubleshoot for this problem.
Also setup with the CD will not connect to the device at all.
    Thanks,
    Alex

What is the model of your router? The RE2000 is designed to extend the wireless range of your main router. It acts as a repeater for the wireless signal and at the same time a wireless bridge for wired devices. From what I know with range extenders, the light will flash quickly every second or so if it has encountered an error.
How far is the range extender from your router? There might be signal obstructions between your router and your range extender.  Try transferring your range extender to another location.  Avoid placing your range extender near metal objects, masonry walls, and reflective surfaces such as mirrors. The best location to setup the range extender is the point where you are getting at least 3 signal bars with a laptop or 50-60% wireless signal strength.
I would suggest that you reset and reconfigure the range extender since it is not working at the moment and you may test it with a wired connection with a laptop to see if it is properly configured. And when you say that it is too hot, did you notice any smoke, flash or flame  coming out of the device? Be safe. Unplug the device immediately.

  • Help with a WRT400N with a Range Extender

I have a Linksys WRT400N and want a Range Extender to boost my signal, can I use the D-Link DAP-1360 Wireless N Range Extender with this router ?    (I don't want the Linksys WAP4410N because of it's unreliability and terrible reviews by users.)  Any ideas are greatly appreciated !
    Thanks

Yes you can use it, First thing which you need to check is if the D-Link DAP-1360 Wireless N Range Extender is compatible with WRT400N Router.

  • Wireless range extender

I am connecting wirelessly using a range extender and am finding media streaming a problem. When I connect direct to the router everything is fine, but media is slow and buffers going through the range extender. I can't find a problem, tried various different channels but no joy. My download speed is the same though the extender too.

However maximum connection I can get is 24 MBPS, my line is 50 and I do get them when I connect with wired line. Just wondering if anything I could do so I can get more then 25 MBPS using wireless. New device is N so it can do more I know.
Should I upgrade verizon Fios router?

  • Extend range of BEFW11S4 Wireless-B broadband router

    Hello,
I curently have a linksys wireless-B broadband router (BEFW11S4) and would like to extend it's range, which device should I buy to accomplish this? I guess I could buy a linksys wireless-G access point (WAP54G), but I'm not sure it will work with an wireless-B router (BEFW11S4). Anyone, any ideas?
    thanks in advance,
    Joeri Kumbruck

yes.... wap54g doesn't work with a wireless - b router.. it will work wirelessly only with another wap54g or wrt54g....even wap11 might not help you..
if you have befw11s4 v 4...then you can try setting up a range expander with it...however , make sure that both the devices have the latest firmware.....

  • HT4145 How can I use an Airport Extreme to act as a Range Extender for an Alcatel One Touch Y800Z WiFi modem/router? I get a message saying it cannot be extended. Thank you. Arup

How can I use an Airport Extreme to act as a Range Extender for an Alcatel One Touch Y800Z WiFi modem/router? As we live in a rural area and our landline broadband speeds are awful, I have moved on to a 3G provider in the UK (EE/Orange) and set up the wireless modem which is working very well with an iMac. I have an Airport Extreme base station which was previously connected with an Ethernet cable to the landline router, and two Airport Express stations as Range Extenders. I would now like to use the Airport Extreme and the two Express stations to extend the range of the Alcatel WiFi device. I have tried automatic and manual set up with the Airport Utility but at the crucial step for selecting a network to extend, although the WiFi device is recognised, I get a message saying it cannot be extended.
Thank you for any help you can provide.
    Arup

This is a problem with a lot of cheap end wifi hotspot like devices.. sometimes you can just swap the sim out to a real 3G wireless router.. that is a better approach IMHO than wireless repeater ever will be.
    In the meantime..
Have a go with the suggestion.. place the express as wireless bridge. With a computer connected to the wifi from alcatel unit.. (I am amazed Alcatel still are in domestic market.. I thought they sold out). Set the express to join the wifi.. you do this in the airport utility.. old one is easy.. but in v6 you have to trust to luck so to speak and hope the auto setup works.. tell us if you have trouble.
With the Express bridging.. you can then plug it by ethernet into the TC.. which will be in router bridge..
    ie
You can then run the connection from wireless or ethernet on the TC.. and it will relay back to the alcatel for internet.. all a bit dodgy but who knows.. it may give you what you need.
Wireless repeater is never particularly reliable in my experience. I would avoid it if possible.

  • Router as Repeater / Range Extender

I use a 2-wire 2700HGV Business Hub as my router and cannot change this as I need Broadband Talk which is not available on the Home Hub 3.
I purchased an iPad for my wife for Christmas and she wants to use it in the kitchen where reception is virtually nil.
The house is not suitable for 'wired' connections so I want to configure a router as a range extender - I have a couple of Voyagers, Home Hubs 2 and 3 and a spare 2-wire [this won't configure according to the manufacturer].
Does anyone have a step by step idea on how I might configure one of the routers as a repeater?
The Devolo products [power line] won't work as the location of the main router and the kitchen are on separate circuits with different meters.  The house is 450 years old and the builders didn't forsee the internet!
Any and all help greatly appreciated.

Use a universal wireless repeater. I have suggested and described this to a number of people here, and it has worked.

  • Can I use an airport express as a range extender to a NON apple router using an internet cable (so not wireless)

can I use an airport express as a range extender to a NON apple router using an internet cable (so not wireless)

Yes, if the AirPort Express is set up to create a wireless network that uses the exact same wireless network name as the other router and the same wireless network password as the other router.

  • Is the WRE54G range extender compatible with the WRT300N wireless router?

I bought a WRT300N wireless router, hoping it would give me better range than my old hub.  It's pretty good, but I still have dead spots in my apartment.  I'd like to buy a WRE54G range extender, but I don't know if it's compatible.  Anyone try this?

i don't think that the wre54g would work with the n-router .. rather i would suggest you to setup a wap200 or wap54gp wired to the router and configured as an AP ... if it still falls short of the wireless range .. configure another one in a repeater mode ...

  • Router as range extender????

I was told that I could use this router (EA4500) as a range extender for my Uverse service. To do this, do I need to set it up in bridge mode? I'm a novice at this & I'm not sure what I'm doing. Does the router have to remain plugged in to the modem in bridge mode? Thanks for the help!

You can set the router to bridge mode and use it as an access point only. But you cannot set it up as a range extender. It needs to be plugged into the modem always in order to get the internet connection since the modem will serve be your DHCP server. If you need to extend the signal in the network, why not get a range extender instead of a router?
If you still have the classic firmware for the EA4500, check the link below how to set it to bridge:

  • New router, Range extender or Powerline network adapter?

Have WRT310N router connected to my desktop in the basement. The signals are very weak upstairs when use my laptop.
Have just purchased a new Samsung Smart TV (located upstairs).
To get stronger signals for streaming, internet connection on TV and laptop what should I be getting?
new router i.e.  EA4500, range extender or powerline adapter.
    Thanks

I have used range extenders and they do work but you should know that the wireless range extenders are 'repeaters' they capture the signal and rebroadcast it.  Therefore the throughput you get with a range extender will typically be less than 50% of the speed of similar router.
If you have the ability to run an ethernet cable between the two rooms I would suggest a 2nd router setup as an access point.
If you can't get ethernet to the 2nd room then I would suggest powerline, In fact I'm currently running a E4200 V1 router with one of it's lan ports connected to a Trendnet powerline adapter and then I have a second Powerline adapter in a room where I couldn't get an ethernet cable the second powerline adapter is connected to a WRT350N router set up as an switch, for devices such as an Xbox and Blu-Ray Player.

  • Trying to connect a NetGear Wifi Range Extender to my existing Wifi. I have an Airport Extreme Base Station and I am also connected to a Vonage Phone Router. Any help would be appreciated?

I am trying to connect a NetGear Wifi Range Extender to my existing Wifi. I have an Airport Extreme Base Station and I am also connected to a Vonage Phone Router. Any help would be appreciated?
The Apple update Firmware for my Airport Extreme Base Station does not update for some reason? Help?
Additionally, I have an older version Airport Express that does not update with the newer Airport Utility Version 6.3 and asks me to download 5.6 to update? Is this worth it?
    Thanks

The netgear is not going to work very well.. and not at all unless it is universal wireless extender.. you cannot use WDS method.
If it does support universal wireless then make sure the airport uses a rational SMB compatible wireless name.. not an apple name which is 35 characters long with spaces and illegal characters like apostrophe.
So nice AE name.. AEwifi and actually while you are trying.. fruitlessly to do this.. use AE24ghz and AE5ghz (so different names on the different bands)
Assuming your AE is gen3 or greater.
You should also fix the wireless channel at least for 2.4ghz since the netgear is probably only going to repeat 2.4ghz so use channel 11, as a trial.
And use no wireless security as a test.. if that works.. then use WPA1 & 2.. as often old equipment using WPA2 is not compatible.
If it fails with simple name.. fixed channel and no security. Sorry it is not compatible at all.. it happens.
If your AE is G wireless or earlier model.. really the time has come for replacement.
If your Express is G wireless model it is not supported.. and is too old to bother with expect I guess if you want to run audio to a speaker.
You must use older 5.6 utility to do this.. so do you have a computer running older OS.. up to Mountain Lion it is easy to install with a bit of manipulation.. later is much harder .. or windows computer anywhere or available to you.
