Rant:  Why call Solaris 11 "x86" when it's actually x64?

There was a time I could install Solaris on a Intel Celeron 466 Mhz 256 MB machine, and that was not so long ago, just a few years. That became a nightmare with a new release because the installation needed more memory. No problem, because now I have an Intel 3 GHz 2 GB machine: that should be enough for SunOS 11. So I downloaded the X86 image and burnt it onto a CD-ROM. Not working. Buring it onto a DVD should be a more safe guess, but then the same error came: "long mode not supported". Searching with Google tought me that this is because Oracle only supports 64-bit processors now.
Angry as I am, I am literally throwing the useless burned CD-ROM and DVD disks in the trash for miles away now. Why does Oracle name the downloads "X86" when it is in fact "X64"? While reviewing the download pages, I really can't find any clue for the X64-only thing. So it's not my fault!
So Oracle, thanks for not supporting 32-bit systems anymore and keeping it a well kept secret.

I got bit by that too when VirtualBox would only run a 32 bit guest on my 64 bit Opterons and the new S11 was 64 bit only.
To answer the question, the original Solaris was SPARC based. Actually, that may not be entirely true, since Solaris descended from SunOS which (I think) predated SPARC, so there might have been a time during the transition when Solaris supported more than SPARC.
Nonetheless, there is a Solaris SPARC and its little brother which runs on the x86 architecture: Solaris x86.
Just because it is 64 bit only does not change the fact that it is x86-based, regardless of the fact that Linux-ish operating systems differentiate the two by referring to 64-bit x86 architecture as x64.

  • Gethostbyname returns h_errno 2, when /etc/hosts has no info on solaris x86

    Hello,
I am calling gethostbyname(native_machine_name) in our code, and we do not want this to be dependent on /etc/hosts file. So when we remove all entries from /etc/hosts file, it works well on sparc machine, but the same doesnt work on solaris x86 machine. gethostbyname returns null with errno 2.
Also "ping hostname" doesnt work on solaris x86 when there is no entry in /etc/hosts, but the same works on sparc machine.
Is there any such dependency on x86 machine? If there is any then how to achieve this functionality (to get host info without /etc/hosts)?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like your name resolution isnt working.
Check you have host: files dns in /etc/nsswitch.conf

That is not legit, it is a scam to gain access to your computer and information.

  • Why dose not see the call waiting notification when other party in a call with some one ?

why dose not see the call waiting notification when other party in a call with some one ?

Because that is not a feature of the iPhone (or of most phones). If someone does not answer when you call, it means they do not want to or cannot talk to you at that time. They could be on another call or they could be simply busy doing something else. Why does it matter which?

  • Why the clock disappears when you recieve a call !!

    Dear iphoners,
It is really strange why the clock disappears when you receive a call "during ringing" ..
for me it is really matter to know the time just before I answer .. you can notice that when your phone is ringing , you can't see the time and you are stuck !!
I'm sure some of you are sharing the same concern .. how can we send this to the developers to solve this issue !!
just to let you feel my concern .. Imagine yourself sleeping and suddenly someone called you "your Boss", you just woke up and you have no idea what is the time .. its bad to answer and ask the caller what is the time !! .. and its annouing to wait till the phone stop ringing to check the time then you call back !!
Please let me know if there is a way to solve this .. or at least let’s ask the developers to solve it
    Thanks,

  • Why can caller hear me when i use and ear bud

Why can't caller hear me when I use an ear bud. I am using the same ear bud that  I used with the Cosmos touch. The Cosmos 3 that I just received worked for awhile with the ear bud but not it's now.  Any suggestions? I'm seriously thinking about going back to my Cosmos Touch, I'm not like this 3. The only thing I like about it is the keyboard.
    Thank You

        clb19,
We definitely want you to enjoy the new phone as well and it's imperative to get the earbuds working with the phone. Have you tried a different set of earbuds? It it one ear bud specifically? Other than this, do all other sound options work? Is there any damage to the phone?

Why is there a missing font called "Ben Pioneer" when it is installed on my pc and works perfectly well with photoshop CS5?

Yes the font works fine with Photoshop and office been using it for years.
Illustrator is a lot more pickier about fonts than those two. And Freefonts are known to get into trouble with Illustrator.
From what I can see on Dafont the font isn't a bitmap font.
Do you use font management? Try installing the font without font management.

  • Why is it that when i am receiving a call the phone does not respond to my finger touch?

Why is it that when i am receiving a call the phone does not respond to my finger touch?

If the photos that you have on your iPad came from a different computer that may be why you are getting that message. If you have photos from a previous sync with iTunes you must make sure that you have those photos selected to sync again.
In the photo below, I have a checkmark next to sync photos. The folder from which the photos are syncing is iPhoto on my Mac. You can also see that I have clicked - selected albums, events, and faces automatically. These events, albums, etc will sync every time the way I have this set up.
I can also add new events or albums when I sync if I choose to do so. You have to select the other albums, events, etc. that you want to sync by putting a checkmark in the box next to the event and then click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes and they will transfer to your iPad.

Yep. You need to touch the sleep/power button once to silence the ring, and twice in order for the call to go directly to Voicemail.

Basic troubleshooting steps clearly outlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new device.
Have you tried ALL the troubleshooting steps?  If you have and you're still having problems, then you'll need to bring your phone into Apple for evaluation and possible exchange.

  • I have a production mobile Flex app that uses RemoteObject calls for all data access, and it's working well, except for a new remote call I just added that only fails when running with a release build.  The same call works fine when running on the device

I have a production mobile Flex app that uses RemoteObject calls for all data access, and it's working well, except for a new remote call I just added that only fails when running with a release build. The same call works fine when running on the device (iPhone) using debug build. When running with a release build, the result handler is never called (nor is the fault handler called). Viewing the BlazeDS logs in debug mode, the call is received and send back with data. I've narrowed it down to what seems to be a data size issue.
I have targeted one specific data call that returns in the String value a string length of 44kb, which fails in the release build (result or fault handler never called), but the result handler is called as expected in debug build. When I do not populate the String value (in server side Java code) on the object (just set it empty string), the result handler is then called, and the object is returned (release build).
The custom object being returned in the call is a very a simple object, with getters/setters for simple types boolean, int, String, and one org.23c.dom.Document type. This same object type is used on other other RemoteObject calls (different data) and works fine (release and debug builds). I originally was returning as a Document, but, just to make sure this wasn't the problem, changed the value to be returned to a String, just to rule out XML/Dom issues in serialization.
I don't understand 1) why the release build vs. debug build behavior is different for a RemoteObject call, 2) why the calls work in debug build when sending over a somewhat large (but, not unreasonable) amount of data in a String object, but not in release build.
I have't tried to find out exactly where the failure point in size is, but, not sure that's even relevant, since 44kb isn't an unreasonable size to expect.
By turning on the Debug mode in BlazeDS, I can see the object and it's attributes being serialized and everything looks good there. The calls are received and processed appropriately in BlazeDS for both debug and release build testing.
Anyone have an idea on other things to try to debug/resolve this?
Platform testing is BlazeDS 4, Flashbuilder 4.7, Websphere 8 server, iPhone (iOS 7.1.2). Tried using multiple Flex SDK's 4.12 to the latest 4.13, with no change in behavior.
    Thanks!

After a week's worth of debugging, I found the issue.
The Java type returned from the call was defined as ArrayList.  Changing it to List resolved the problem.
I'm not sure why ArrayList isn't a valid return type, I've been looking at the Adobe docs, and still can't see why this isn't valid.  And, why it works in Debug mode and not in Release build is even stranger.  Maybe someone can shed some light on the logic here to me.

  • On my iPhone 4, people cant hear me when I make and / or receive normal (GSM) phone calls. But when on calls using internet based / native apps like viber or skype, people can hear me just fine. Voice memos work too and have already tried different SIMs

On my iPhone 4, people cant hear me when I make and / or receive normal (GSM) phone calls. But when I make/receive calls using internet-based / native apps like viber or skype, people can hear me just fine. I have tried recording my voice using voice memos - this works. And have already tried different SIM cards but the problem persists.
I have taken my phone to an authorized Apple service center, where they restored my phone to factory settings, but still facing the same issue. They service center directed me to Apple Customer Care Hotline, where I have now spent 3+ hours explaining my issue and yet no one can resolve it. The easy answer if to replace the phone - and since it is out of warranty, I am expected to pay for it.
Additionally, the customer service has been so rude and confrontational that it has completely changed my view of Apple and its customer focus. I am a disappointed and angry customer today - people would be surprised to hear just how rude customer service was including making statements such as "Apple doesnt make infallible products, that's why warranty is needed for our products" and that "every product undergoes a problem at some stage, so do ours!" There goes whatever confidence I had...
My concern is simple - if no one at Apple and / or its CS hotline is able to address my issue comprhensively and keep telling me that they have never encountered a precedent before, then with what right can they expect me to pay for a replacement?! I am NOT here to fund Apple's research into their product faults and manufacturing.
And even though a customer is out of warranty, is it too much to expect an Apple product to work well for at least a 'reasonable' period of time. My phone is less than 18 months old and has been facing this issue for the past 2 months - surely the longevity of Apple products is more than 18 months!
Just a sad sad day for an Apple customer, compounded by unjustifiably rude and aggressive staff. And still no resolution to my problem.

I am having the same issue - with my last 2 iPhone 4's. My first handset each time I was on a call wether it was up to my ear or on loud speaker, the call would automatically mute even though the mute button wouldn't show up as highlighted. Pressing the mute button on and off during the call doesn't fix it either. I rang Apple and asked what some of their trouble shooting solutions were. I got told that it might be a software issue and to install the latest software update. This failed. I then got told to uninstall the software on the phone and do a complete restore. This also failed. After trying the troubleshooting suggestions, I took the phone into my provider and they sent me out a new phone within a week under warranty claiming it was a hardware issue and probably just a "glitch" with that particular phone. This was not the case....
After receiving my second iPhone 4, I was hopeful that it would work. For the first couple of days, making/receiving calls was not an issue. Until after about a week, the same problem started again. In one instance I had to hang up and call back 4 times and the call would still automatically mute after about 5 seconds. Also on the second handset, the main camera located on the back of the phone has red and blue lines running through it and can't take a decent picture. So back to the store I go to get another replacement - Again.
For a phone that is rated highly and as a keen Apple product purchaser, I am a bit disappointed with the experience I have had with the iPhone 4. Let's hope they find a fix sometime soon because this is becoming a bit beyond a joke.....!!
