RANT: Why is there no power button on the Airport Extreme Base Station?

I know there is no solution to this until Apple updates the next generation of Airport Extrem Base Stations; hopefully they'll add a POWER BUTTON to it.
I like to turn off my base station when I'm not at home and the only choice I have is to pull the plug out of the back. Why? Two reasons: cut down on my energy bill and SECURITY.
Not that it really uses much energy, but I'm doing the environmental thing here. And my network is password protected, but I just feel more comfortable having it turned off when I'm not there.
So, does anybody feel the same as me about this?

Really an airport
being tunred off for the time you dont use it isnt
going to save the environment that much I am sure
there are plenty of environmental accidents that ruin
your hundreds of hours of energy use over the years
in mere seconds.
I'm not just thinking of myself when I speak of the environment and energy use. If everyone that has an Airport Network at home turned it off when they were not at home, I think it would make a significant difference. People need to think nore of their impact on the world instead of viewing just their one little piece of it.
It's like the people who leave their desktop computers and monitors on all the time. Turn the friggin' things off if you're not there and if it's not performing any function. Those devices are just eating up energy.

  • HT3500 I am trying to hook up my new Canon MG5320 printer wirelessly to my MacBookPro with OSX.8.2.  The Airport Extreme Base Station does not have a WPS button and so I seem to be stymied even though the printer detects the Airport Extreme.  Suggestions?

I am trying to set up my new Canon MG5320 printer to my wireless network.  However, there is no button on the Airport Extreme to push when I get to that step in the set-up directions.  I am using OSX.8.2.  Suggestions please!

If the display shows the "Press and hold the WPS button..." message on the MG display, press the red Stop button on the MG and then select Standard Setup. The MG will search for networks and should display your Airport Extreme's network name. Select this and then enter the password to connect to this network.

  • Can the AirPort Extreme Base Station be plug-in to the power forever?

    Hi,
sorry for my english but this is my question: Can the AirPort Extreme Base Station be plug-in to the power (electricity) forever? I mean, I don't have to un-plug the Base Station sometimes? Thanks
    Alvaro

Sounds more like an issue with your router and
network than a problem with AEBS.
    Which router?
I certainly do not need to reboot my AEBS like that,
I think I have rebooted it once in two years!
I would start a new thread describing your network in
more detail and the issues with the AEBS.
Thank you, but my diagnosis is the result of many days
of experiment with about hundreds of users. It's a bug,
I know were it is. It was reported to Apple in september
    (2005).
It isn't that easy to upgrade at the same time all the
wireless (802.11b and 802.11g) that do have to interoperate
    smoothly within the same space.
I don't think anyone need to waste more time on these
bugged firmware versions (5.6 & 5.7) as I already explained
it. They work smoothly just in a limited environment
which they were conceived for: one Mac connected to one
    AEBS connected to one FAI.
You can't recommand these version to colleagues who have
to live in a real world with other wireless equipment
(a Mac not updated, an ABS not updated,
a Cisco wireless card emitting to 100 mW and smashing all
the neibourhood, a pre 802.11g+ card using 2 channels at
    the same time...).

  • I can't find an ac power adaptor for my AirPort Extreme base station.

I was given an AirPort Extreme base station, the square model, I just need an ac power adaptor. I can't seem to find one that will definitely fit. Help please?

It is easier and better to give the model number from the base.. A1143 is the oldest Airport Extreme that is N wireless.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirPort_Extreme
All the models from Gen1 to Gen5 use the same power supply.. 12v 1.8A
But it can be replaced with any standard 12v supply.. of sufficient current rating.
The real thing is expensive. It still doesn't have the Apple cord.

Buy a power supply rated at 12v 3a 4a or 5a .. any of those ratings will work well.
I generally buy 4a or 5a. as they tend to be a bit better. Although if you check they all seem identical to each other..
Check in your local market if you want one fast.. just do ebay search for 12v 4a power supply..

Power cord is probably a standard IEC computer cable.
Cheaper from HK but if you want reasonable quality pay around $10US.. cheaper can be rubbish.

Unfortunately, you are describing the symptoms of an AirPort Extreme with a failing (or failed) internal power supply.
As a last resort, try a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme as follows:
Power off the AirPort by pulling the power cord
    Wait a minute or two
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for an additional 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the AirPort
Release the reset button and allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart
Now try to configure the AirPort again.  If you continue to see the same symptoms as before, the AirPort will need to be replaced.

  • AirPort Extreme Base Station Failing to Power On

I have an AirPort Extreme Base Station that suddenly stopped showing a power light. I've had this device for less than a year. Is it likely that the power supply has gone bad this quickly? This is a model A 1408 unit. Any history of this?

Just take it back to apple.. yes the internal or external power supply can fail.. but if less than 12months old it is under warranty.. Apple wiil simply replace it.
It does happen .. not often but it is reported occasionally.
I have this problem too! I have a model A 1521 and I bought this mid august this year. It's depending between 2 or 5 days that my airport extreme stopped working and have no supply anymore.I need to pull out the plug and plug it back before it works again.
This is much more common.. return to apple for replacement.. try using it with a protected power board or even UPS and people say they work better.. the power supply shuts down with the slightest dip in power.. so it seems to be a design fault in certain batches.. there is a long thread..
My Airport Extreme intermittently shuts down completely.

  • Why does my Airport Extreme Base Station keep appearing as a Shared device?

After installing 10.5 my Airport Extreme Base Station keeps appearing with a Windows PC icon under the SHARED list in the Finder, and I don't have a hard drive attached. Does anyone know why it's appearing, and how I can make it go away?

Even more weird in my case, I have the Airport Extreme show up twice under Shared. One shows an icon of the actual Airport Extreme which is the one that has the hard drive attached and that works fine. The second is named Airport-Extreme and has an icon like its a PC. lol Not sure what's going on here but if you ask me the first one should be there because that makes sense, but I have no idea why the second one is displayed. Must be some sort of bug.

  • Power Mac G3 Pismo with Airport wireless card in Mac OS X 10.4 won't connect to wireless network  with  newest Airport Extreme Base Station set at WPA Personal/WPA 2 Personal encryption.

My Power Book G3 Pismo with an Airport wireless card  running Mac OS X 10.4.11 will not connect to my new Airport
Extreme Base Station using WPA Personal/WPA 2 Person encryption.  The Airport firmware is version 9.52.  From
posts I've read online at different places indicates the Airport card should support the WPA encryption.  Perhaps the problem
is the Base Station is using a combination setting and the fault is in the base station?
    Thanks for any suggestions

Perhaps an inexpensive usb wireless adapter would work as well?
This is probably the simplest way to get the G3 connected to the wireless network.
I'll have to read up on getting an express and using it as a wireless bridge as I am unfamiliar with the concept.
The new AirPort Extreme is broadcasting a wireless signal.
A new AirPort Express could be located close to the G3. The Express will pick up the wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme, then provide an Ethernet connection to the G3 though a short Ethernet cable.
This can work very well......IF.....you keep the G3 at a fixed location, since it will always be connected to the AriPort Express using an Ethernet cable.
I do have an old Linksys Wireless G router.  I wonder if that would work?
In theory, yes. But it would have to use much older WEP "security", which is easily cracked in minutes using free tools available on the Internet. So, anyone who really wanted to get on the network could do so. It's an option, but not a very good one.

  • Are there any faster wireless routers compared to the Apple Extreme Base Station?

Are there any faster wireless routers compared to the Apple Extreme Base Station?

The speed of wireless is limited by the technology. If you are using 802.11n wireless at 5 GHz, and assuming you have a strong connection, the speed will approach the 270-300 Mbps range. Other routers will achieve similar results if they have 5 GHz capability.
As far an ethernet connection is concerned, the Gigabit ethernet ports on the AirPort Exteme will provide top performance, along with other routers that have Gigabit etherent ports.

  • AirPort Extreme Base Station (g/b): Downtime is increasing this year. Why?

I work in two schools with numerous wireless Macs. We've used AirPort Extreme (802.11g) base stations since 05-06. One school has 22 base stations and the other 18.
As the school year is progressing, the frequency of base station downtime and random falling off the network has increased dramatically. Most days when I walk in the building and check there are at least 20-30% down. I've taught a few teachers how to reset them by unplugging, waiting 30 seconds (or 5 minutes for stubborn ones), and replugging. Some teachers who "babysit" individual base stations have reported that they're down as many as 6-8 times per day!
There have been no significant network changes to cause these problems. (But, I am detecting leaking wireless signals from homes across the street.) I've tried reinstalling firmware (v5.7), but it doesn't help much. I've also repositioned a few... especially those which are near old microwave ovens.
    Questions:
    - As these things age, does the failure rate increase?
    - Is there a network diagnostic tool I should use to find a source of the problem?
    - Any other suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Dick

How reliable is the connexion to the internet itself? I ask because I had many more problems like this - admittedly on a tiny home network - before our ISP replaced our modem after it went on the blink. Some of those problems were resolved by cycling the modem. But many of them were resolved by resetting base stations. I don't know why a jittery modem should have that effect and I don't know that I won't have lots of evidence to undermine my hypothesis tomorrow, but it certainly seems as though I spend less time unplugging base stations now than I did before. Just a thought really.

  • Why won't AirPort Utility find my new Airport Extreme Base Station?

I bought a reconditioned 5th Generation Airport Extreme.  I'm running it with a MacBook Pro, running Lion OS.  I have version 6.0 (600.92) of AirPort Utility.  The firmware in the AirPort Extreme was version 7.0 and it updated to 7.1.  Then I couldn't get it to update again.  Probably have the latest version?
When I first plugged it in, AirPort Utility found it and I was able to configure it with a WiFi private connection and a guest connection.  I had a blinking light, but it worked and I was able to use if for a day or two.  I wanted to see why the blinking status light would not go out so did some trouble shooting and did a couple of hard resets and started to understand how the various settings work and had it close to where I wanted it, with the status light on steady.  Then it stopped finding the base station and reset no longer worked.  I noticed that after working with it for a few hours that the case felt warmer than I'd like.
So, I suspect I have a defective AirPort Base Station.  The setup paramaters were confusing, after resetting it, it kept asking for the PPPeo name and password.  I have no idea what to enter there.   I guess the next step is to call AppleCare and arrange for a replacement.  A reconditioned one carries the same warranty as a new one.  But, now I'm skeptical and wonder if it is worth the $30 I saved (after spending hours trying to get it to work).  I may be better off returning this and getting a new one.  Any suggestions??

I took the defective AirPort Extreme to the local Apple Store and it was replaced with a new one.  It is now working.
I am using it with two 1 GBit Ethernet Switches between it and the DSL Modem.  I have it configured as a Bridge. I tried DHMP and it didn't like it, may could have got it working, but it was asking for info that I didn't know how to answer.  It seemed to work in DHCP, but the Status Light kept blinking amber.  Bridge mode works, but I've lost the Guest Login.
Is there a was to run this in Bridge mode and still have the second login (guest)?
Thanks for any suggestions on this.

  • Why no DSL and  no cable respectively on new AirPort Extreme Base Station?

    Hi,
I just saw the new APE Base Station, and I wondered about the fact, that it doesn't come with an ADSL2+- (for Europe) or cable-modem embedded, and being an full-featured router. I'd like to replace my adsl-router with the APE, but there would one more thing hang around here. Even the fact of missing 1000T isn't really good for me. Maybe next APE Base Station has some of the features?
    Regards

Should I have set both networks with the same name, which I guess would alllow the various clients to default to whatever is the fastest?
    Is that how it works?
Not the fastest, the best quality connection, which is a combination of signal strength, speed, low noise and who knows what else the Apple engineers have come up with for the formula.
The default setting for the Extreme is dual band, using the same wireless network name for both bands. This is the setting that most users should use because their device(s) will automatically connect to the best signal available depending on their capability and location.
You can "force" a connection to 5 GHz by assigning a different name to that band, but this does not assure you that you are making a better connection. It might well be worse.
Why? The upside is that 5 Ghz is capable of faster speeds. The downside is that you always must give up something to gain something else. In the case of 5 GHz, the signals are not nearly as strong as 2.4 GHz signals, so the 5 Ghz signals are going to be absorbed much more quickly by any walls, ceilings, or other obstructions.
To really get good perfomance on 5 GHz, you almost have to have a line-of-sight relationship between the router and the computer. So, 5 Ghz works well if you are relatively close to the router and you have a clear shot at the Extreme. Move your laptop down the hall and around the corner and chances are, the 2.4 GHz signal is stronger (and possibly faster) at that location.

  • HT4262 Is there any way to extend my Apple Extreme Base Station using an Apple Express by via ethernet or does it only work via wifi and being in range?

From what I read, the only way to extend my Apple Wifi Network is via another Apple Airport Extreme or Express using overlapping wifi zones. If I try to connect my Apple Express to my Apple Extreme via Ethernet, then this is guaranteed to fail regardless of how I configure the Express. Is that correct?

It is certainly possible and better....in terms of performance.....to connect the AiPort Express to your AirPort Extreme using Ethernet to extend the network that way.
If you are having problems with this, then your setup is not correct....or....if your setup is correct, you may have a defective AirPort.
We can walk you through the steps to get things set up correctly if we can get some basic information to provide the correct settings.
What is the model number of the AirPort Extreme?
What is the model number of the AirPort Express?
if you are not sure, look on the bottom of the Extreme and side or bottom of the Expess. The model number starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.
We also need to know what operating system you are using on your computer. If you have a Mac, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac and post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.
We will likely have more questions about your current setup to understand things a bit better, so please be patient.

  • Why do I get an error message that the IP address of my new Airport Extreme base station is invalid?

I have tried several times to replace my Airport Express with Airport Extreme by following the instructions. These attempts were made with both options, Replace an Exiting Network and Create a New Network. I get to the Setup is Complete page and wait for the base station to restart. The amber light goes from solid to flashing but never turns green. After waiting several minutes I get the problem page stating that the IP address is invalid. I have powered off my computer and modem, reset the Airport Extreme and tried again witht he same result. I am now back on Airport Express to enable connection to the Internet.
    Any suggestions?

There are three Airport resets, soft, hard and factory default.  It would probably be beneficial if you tried each one in sequence.  Actually, you could jump to the factory default reset if you don't mind reconfiguring from scratch.
