Rapid battery drain over EDGE

EDGE seems to just rip through battery on my phone. An hour and ten minutes of browsing over edge completely drains my battery. Hardly the six hours advertised. Anyone have any suggestions?

Read more of what was advertised. The fineprint note below says:
Internet over Wi-Fi: Testing conducted by Apple in May and June 2007 using preproduction iPhone units and software. Internet over Wi-Fi testing conducted using a closed network and dedicated web and mail server, simulating browsing to 20 popular URLs and checking mail once an hour. All settings were default except: Call Forwarding was turned on; the Wi-Fi feature Ask to Join Networks and Auto-Brightness were turned off; WPA2 encryption was enabled. Battery life depends on the cellular network, location, signal strength, Wi-Fi connectivity, feature configuration, usage, and many other factors. Battery tests are conducted using specific iPhone units; actual results may vary. Internet over EDGE: Testing conducted by Apple in May and June 2007 using preproduction iPhone units and software. But honestly, I get more than what you say you get, but I also don't get many phone calls (0 to 2 a day for just a few mins). Phone calls will kill your battery faster that other activities. Will say Internet over Edge is second fastest. If you get a few calls and browse a lot....well, find a WiFi hotspot.

  • Why Does My iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.0.1 Cause Rapid Battery Drain

I upgraded my iPhone 3GS to iOS 4.0.1, and now the battery drains very rapidly---needs to be recharged after a few hours---and gets very warm. Before this, iOS 4.0 was fine (although slightly increased battery drain over 3.1.3).
I use Exchange with push and had no issues before iOS 4.0.1. This may be the culprit now because when I turn off "push," the battery drain appears to be normal (although not extensively tested yet). But, I also have MobileMe, Yahoo!, and Google email accounts set up.
Is this a new problem? Anyone else have this problem? How can this be fixed? Anyone have any ideas?

*Reposting this..had done the same thing earlier as well*
    This is my observation from past 6 nights;
All 6 nights, charged my iPhone to max and then kept it in sleep/stand by. Not even a single call or mail checked...(11 pm to 6:30 am when my alarm rings)
1st & 2nd Nights, I had flight center, angry birds, twitter, facebook, mail, phone, sms, settings app open in the multi-tasking bar.
Battery drained from 100% to 83%
3rd and 4th nights, i had only twitter, facebook, mail, phone, sms
Battery drained from 100% to 92%
5th and 6th nights, I had nothing open
Battery drained from 100% to 93%
my mail is always in push enable setting to exchange and me account,
location always on, bluetooth always off. 3G off
I thought, the applications on multi tasking bar is actually not draining the battery, but looks like they are...might be a flaw in multi tasking api or may be from developer.
I hope to get an easy way to kill the apps and not let it go to multi tasking bar.

  • IOS 4.2.1 + 3G data = hot phone & extremely rapid battery drain

    Anyone else having this issue?
Since "upgrading" to iOS 4.2.1 on the weekend, it seems anytime I try to use the phone for data over 3G, it'll heat up like crazy and I can watch the battery drain in front of my eyes.
Everything else works fine including data over WiFi aside from some apps quitting abruptly without any transition effects.
I've reset and just finished Restoring. Less than a minute after I turn off WiFi and use any kind of data, the phone heats up and my battery % actually went down while connected to my Mac Pro.

    Donovan,
just wanted to share my experience... I too updated to 4.2.1 the other day and running on Rogers network. I noticed that the 3G data seems to be the culprit. Its consistantly downloading data! I can only imagine what Rogers is going through if all iphone 3G's are having this issue :s... I just turned off cellular data and running some tests, later tonight going to try a full restore to see what that will do...
    keep you posted.

  • IOS 5 rapid battery drain (including in sleep mode), springboard crashes: FIX!

OK folks, I resolved all issues in their entirety with the help of a genius bar tech who recognized that I was very technical.  WARNING!  Sync or backup your phone prior to performing these steps!
First, do a MANUAL download here of the IOS 5 that matches the model of phone you have and save that image to your desktop or some other place on your computer.  PUT THE PHONE IN DFU MODE, not recovery mode (google on how to accomplish if you are not familiar).  The raeson why you are going to put in DFU mode is so that you will be able to not only get a good copy of IOS 5 installed but to ensure that your firmware is not corrupt, which appeared to be the case with my battery drains and springboard crash issues.
One you are in DFU mode (your screen should be black the whole time, again google), open itunes and it will give you a warning that says that your phone needs to be restored.  If you are on a mac, hold down the option key and press RESTORE in iTunes.  This will open up a box that will allow you to "locate and select" a file, which will be the IOS 5 image that you manually downloaded before.
Once you do, the iphone will start to restore.  After all of the restore cycles have been completed, you will be prompted in iTunes to either setup as a new phone or restore from backup.  I USED RESTORE FROM BACKUP so that I could preserve all of my settings.  Everything has been working PERFECTLY ever since completing these steps!  I will probably go ahead and make a separate thread related to this fix.
    I hope this helps!  Scott

Their is another thread in here that mentions turning off reporting of Diagnostics data (Settings --> General --> About --> Scroll to the bottom/Diafnostics --> Select Don't send.
Another item to check are you E-mail accounts. If you only have one account in this section then you should be good. If you have multiple and have every feature turned on (Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, etc) then your device could be trying to update to all and timing out which would get it to retry over and over again. I have turned off all the other features for my email accounts with the exception of iCloud and my battery life is looking good.

  • Battery draining/over heating issues - 925

    hi all,
ive had this issue for a while now but havnt moaned about it until now but ive just had enough of this constant issue and want some help
i have the lumia 925 and have the above simptons, i have the lumia amber update and have disabled every setting and background app the only thing i have enabled and running in the backround are -
touch display is turned on (double tap to wake)
on my home screen i have the apps -  Photos, Battery,  Bing news, The Weather Chanel, set as live tiles
the backround apps i have running are -  Battery, Bing News, Facebook and whatsapp
apart from that all other settings are disabled or off
i can disable bing news if have to but i dont think this is the issue here as before i was having the exact problem
one time i noticed a 30% decrease in battery, not to mention the battery got really hot in hand

    Hey Robert,
If it's anything like my 920, sometimes it gets caught in a CRAZY battery drain cycle. Sometimes it may get hot, sometimes not, but I always make sure that my GPS is working correctly. A lot of times it's not, and I need to reset the phone by either turning it off or holding down the power and volume down buttons.
Especially check any apps that you may have downloaded that may be using GPS. Also, if you do the power + volume down, always turn your phone off again the normal slide down way afterwards or your live tiles won't update correctly.

  • Rapid battery drain after Mavericks Install

    Hey everyone,
I've spent a lot of time reviewing the existing threads and haven't been able to pinpoint a solution to my issue. I upgraded my late 2008 MacBook Aluminum 2.4 GHZ to Mavericks, and noticed considerable battery drain. I made an appointment at the Apple Store to do a clean install of Mavericks, and this seemed to help but as I installed software required to access internet at school (SafeConnect, AnyConnect VPN, Avast) my battery life has gone down again. Also, the battery drains when the computer is supposed to be in sleep mode. I have a new battery on board (127 cycles, my cycle count has increased a lot due to this battery drain issue). Does anyone have an idea of what could be the offending software and provide me potential alternatives?
Some numbers for reference: With Snow Leopard I have 3.5 hrs of battery life, and after my initial clean install I had 3.5 hrs of battery life (so no improvement, but no worse performance either..). Now I am lucky to make 2 hrs with a full charge.

  • 9800 Torch - Rapid Battery Drain

I've searched a bunch of forums and found that this is an old problem, but this has just started happening on my device within the last 2-3 weeks.  I have a Torch 9800 with 6.0.0 Bundle 2647.  When i look for an upgrade, the desktop software tells me that i have the latest version (ie..no upgrade available).
My Blackberry 6.0.0 System Software is pulling 100% of the CPU time.  I have deleted a few of the apps that i thought might be the culprit, and the problem goes away for a day or two, then boom, BSS 6.0.0 is pulling 100% again, and my battery drains quickly, and the phone acts sluggish, to the point it is almost useless.  I am at wits end, and although this appears to have been resolved in an older version of the OS, my OS seems to be up to date.
    Any ideas out there?

What OS are you on? On your device, type in a new message MYVER and a space after to see and report back please.
Try a Battery pull please, with the BlackBerry device powered ON, remove the battery 15 seconds and then reinsert the battery to reboot device. This will clear all cache like rebooting a PC. Then try again and see if your problem persists.

  • Rapid battery drain after turning on iCloud

Is it normal for iCloud to drain my battery so quickly? Since turning on iCloud for Calendars, my battery drained almost completely overnight, and went from 61% down to 36% in about 2 hours doing nothing other than sending one very short (2 words) iMessage. I'd like to use iCloud but keeping my iPhone plugged in constantly is not an option.

  • IPhone 5 Rapid Battery Drain - No Standby

Hi folks - I have a 64GB iPhone 5.  When wifi is enabled and I am at work (this doesn't occur on any other wifi network that I have yet found) the phone will not go into standby mode (though the screen turns off) as evidenced by the Usage and Standby times being almost identical.  In approximately 3 hours, when wifi is enabled, my phone will go from 100% to below 20% and is quite hot to the touch. The wifi network at my work is WPA2 encrypted, wireless N and G, and 2 SSID's are broadcast for the same network (to support staff whose wireless laptops haven't been switched to the new SSID - don't get me started - it's a stupid setup).  Anyways, the wifi quality is dodgy at past and even though the signal remains strong, internet connectivity frequently drops.  I suspect that the wireless router is defective but I have no control over that and have been ignored by the IT folks.
To make matters even more interesting, my iPad 4 connects to the same network at work and the battery doesn't drain and the device goes into standby without issue.
If I disable wifi on the phone while at work, the phone goes into standby and the Usage actually reflects the amount of time the device is actually used (a fraction of the total time).
I have reset network settings on the phone, reflashed 6.01 and restored from backup, disabled location services, etc... but to no avail.
Do you think there is a defect with the phone in its ability to handle the dodgy wifi at my work when the iPad manages it fine or is there something else that I could do to stay connected to the wifi without the phone chewing through battery, heating up, and not sleeping?
    Thanks folks!

    Hi sjfwhite!
I've got exactly the same problem with my iPhone 5 (32GB). I talked to the support over the phone and they offerd me to send it in for service. It ended up that I got an new iPhone 5. But the battery just drains for no reason. Talked to the support again, service ...again.
The apple-support tested to send me a diagnostics test. They coundn't see a problem.
After all test I've done myself, I think it is the cellular network that is the problem.
If I put the backside of the iPhone to my ear I hear a sound that is a very high tone. Then when I turned the cellular network of, it didn't sound at all. And the battery works just fine.
So maybe it could work if you tested a new nano sim.
Because, the service seems not to work, or as you said wait for an upgrade.

  • Curve 9300 3G Sudden rapid battery drain w upgrade to version 6.0 - solution

Issue :  Curve 3G works perfeclty fine running BBOS 5.0 and an upgrade suddenly results in very poor batterylife
Check: use  CPU discovery to see if the required Blackberry Phone application reports signficant CPU use (say 5 hours or more) that is obvioiusly more than what you were actually making calls with on your phone
Solution:  try doing a fresh re-install using using BBDM, or even downgrading one version of version 6.0 (option is available if using BBDM.  (in my case was running 6.0.0.5xx and downgraded to 6.0.0.4xx)
This was an easy fix, given i was highly inclined  to otherwise throw the phone under the bus.
    Caveats:
    -  problem may be carrier specific
    - corrput install of the phone application may repeat itself due to firewall/hardware of your computer
Worked perfect for me and was easy to do, i.e. if you are comfortable enough using BBDM, and have added/removed any applications (or done backups and restores) you should be able to do this by just upgrading or downgrading the BB Version 6 "core applications" as you cannot just select the Phone application as a standalone install
I posted this separate message in the hopes of saving someone else new to this problem reading scores and scores of  threads without anyone CLEARLY pointing the fix.

I noticed the same, the "Phone" app uses a lot of resources causing the battery to drain. I upgraded to 6.0.0.7xx and this seems to have fixed this issue for now.

  • High CPU usage - Rapid Battery Drain - Running HOT

    Looking for help.. PLEASE!
    Z10 - Model STL100-3 Software release 10.2.1.2179
    Symptoms;
Occasionally, and for no apparent reason, I notice my Z10 getting hot in my pocket. I run the device monitor App and see a very high CPU usage, which consequently drains the batter very quickly.
I've tried all the solutions from every support group thread and blog. And I mean ALL!
    Pulling the battery
    Replaced the battery
    Removed the SIM
    Deleted G Mail
Removed all 3rd party Apps (2)
    Stopped email sync
    Stopped calendar sync
    Turned off all radio
    Turned Off Wi-Fi
Let it sit for hours, even days to let it finish doing whatever its trying to do
    Etc Etc Etc.
Finally, I called BB support, they wanted $50 to talk to someone. I told them the issue, they said the device is bad and must be replaced. I said its software related!! They said.. no, its a hardware issue. Device is under warranty and they want me to just go get a new one. I don't want a new one, I want a fix! Stop the waste of BB $
    Temporary solution
Eventually, I decided I would do a restore, back to the factory settings, and here's when I found something
I run BB Link, connect the device, do a back-up... and LOW AND BEHOLD.. this fixes the high CPU usage and the device runs great, very cool, low cpu and extremely long battery life.
Sadly! .. this problem reoccurs, after a few days, sometimes after a couple of weeks and just out of the blue.
I can force this fault to occur, simply by doing a restart of the device. Sure enough, it will run hot, use all the cpu and I will have to do a back-up to get it to settle down again. I've tried to wait for the so called 'indexing' to finish, but it never stops running with high cpu and doesn't help.
Can any one tell me whats happening and how to make this a permanent fix?
There are hundreds if not thousands of people having very similar issues, and many different methods to fix it. Its my belief that there is an underlying bigger problem that relates to all these differing fixes, but as yet.. I cant find it and none of these fixes work for me. For now... I will keep doing the occasional back-up and hope I get a response that can help.
Thanks to all that read this.

The heat may be normal. After a little water damage incident, which I repaired, I disassembled my Z10 the find a small heat sink will thermal compound. This helps dissipate heat efficiently. I found a large number of air bubbles and possibly a large air pocket by the way the paste stuck to both sides. I removed the old paste and replaced it with artic silver paste and the z10 has been much much cooler. It use to run about 105*f and now it is around 85*f.
See this thread I posted for before and after pictures using a thermal imager.

@Curve8530 .....as much a s your discovery is appreciated, I hardly believe that most people will actually dismantle their phone to remove the paste and replace with arctic silver. Besides, what you are doing is not a fix for the actual problem....
In most cases, this heat is associated with apps using the CPU resources beyond the normal limits.
As an easy fix, finding and removing the app(s) in question followed by a reboot, solves the issue. In some cases an OS reload is necessary.... but under no circumstances I would even remotely suggest to any member to dismantle their phone and do what you did...

  • Battery drain over night

    Hello,
I have a strange problem with my 9810. Yesterday I pulled out my phone from charging at 7:AM (100%). I put it on GPRS , because i didn't did any browsing on that day and to see how much my battery will last. So after a few phones, sms, emails, I was down to 80% by 10PM. Was very happy with what I saw.
In background were running Accuweather and Facebook with update once every 3 hours. Also I have Battery Bost MAX, and an application which shows me battery icon with procentage.(Smart Blndie). I am in an area with good signal.
Put the phone in the holster, and went to bed. I was very courios to see what the battery shows. At 6 AM i was shocked : 42%... I can't blame it on the applications, because if there were their fault, my battery should discharge the same over day... GPS is off, wifi is off. The phone has 2 weeks (almost new).
I am runing 7.1.0.658 OS...  My screen is at 10%, and turn off over 20 seconds...

    Hi radu_dobre
If you run an social based application you can't say it will be same for night as it will be in day time. But if you think that application are not responsible then you can try  Application resource monitor or Open BlackBerry Device Analyser and run a battery test it will show you which application is using your battery resourses
and you will be able to figure out the problem.

Listen, brentwoodperson, I understand you're all for getting the replacement - you've posted so in a number of forums.  Please stop now.
The issue is that the issues many of us are having are intermittent.  They can not necessarily be reproduced on demand. So I can't just go into a Verizon store and insist on a replacement because I cannot necessarily demonstrate the issue.
I also have a busy schedule and travel extensively. I can't waste a lot of time at a store.  I need a reliable fix or exchange, and that is why I am hoping that the Verizon moderators will respond - as I am sure there are many in my situation.

  • Rapid battery drain repaired - why?

My battery suddenly started draining from fully charged to 20% or less in 4 hours or less. This continued for three days. Finally, I accidentally let the battery go to zero. The phone reset itself in the charger and the battery began to function normally after charging. What happened? Could I have fixed this problem without draining the battery?

You recalibrated the battery. Its a wise move on any modern rechargeable device
