Rapid memory loss
I am losing memory rapidly. I have no idea why? I've lost about 5oo gigs in just a few weeks.. I am a photographer, but all my files are stored on exteral drives..
You have a memory leak in an application. Go to User>Applications>Activity Monitor and see what's hogging the memory.
But are you sure it's not early onset Alzheimer's?

"Not enough disk space" when there seems to be (+ rapid memory consumption)
[Note: I originally posted this in the iDVD section, but due to an answer I got there to another question and further conversations with my daughter, figured out this is probably an iMovie question?]
I'm a newbie to iDVD and iMovie and Forums (my last Mac was a Performa 6360--still using it for the family budget). I got my daughter a MacBook as a graduation gift. She is using it to combine movie inputs from a wedding/reception that come from digital camreas and a couple of video cameras. We went to Flip4Mac to get the necessary software/features to import .wmv files (only way we could download one of the video cameras was by going from PC to Mac--can't remember if it was a Sony or Canon).
Issue: When she tries to import vidoes into iMovie HD 6.0.3 which have already been transferred to her computer, she gets: "The file could not be imported: There is not enough disk space to import Macintosh HD/Users/julie/pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2007/Roll8/CIMG1442.AVI" [She says this is about a 4 min. clip.]
Basically the question is how to get more room on her disk to import and to save? She seems to only be able to Save--she can't Save Project as an option because it says she doesn't have enough disk space (she's already deleted the Trash). Help says you need to have more than 400mb of free space or it gets difficult but the indicator shows 28.8GB free space left...so there seems to be some kind of disconnect?? (Or maybe we're talking apples and oranges?)
[Even more disturbing, just in the last couple of days with only a little time spent on the computer, the 28.8 GB has dropped to 2.3GB--obviously there is something she is doing that she is not aware of or shouldn't be doing that is consuming memory at a rapid pace.] On top of that, she also gets the same error message when she tries to burn the project onto a disk using iDVD???
I went through the first 5 pages of the forum and couldn't see a similar problem, but then I may have not known what to look for?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...she's trying to give the DVD as a Wedding gift--somewhat belated.Hello Karstn Schluter,
This is fm's daughter who is havin ghte difficulites. at the end you tell me to try to answer 1-8 so i will try.
1- how can you tell if the avi is containing divx? or not?? do I need to just keep this in mind when importing these files
2- I have not brought in an external drive. I did try making my laptop computer a harddrive so I could import my imovie poject to my eMAC at one point, but it was not allowing me to do that either. Because I had to have it in DVD form or something
3- No I did not segment the internal drive....sorry How do you do that??? Right now I am trying to find out what is taking up all the memory and Hard Disk Drive space....i do not know how to do that either....Do you know how???
4-Yes I know flip4mac is for wmv....I guess what that question was emplying was that I also have wmv files that I am trying to import to imovieHD and that is not working either...I can get my avi to get into imovieHD, but not my wmv. files
5-THank you for the tip with the trash then another question to this one how do you delet projects that are taking up memory that are no longer in use?
6-Thank you for the tip...so then ignore the not enough disk space.....how can you alter the disk space so that you can save the project under save project as and not just save project?
7- Sorry my dad was miss informed I cannot import the wmv. files to imovie and I cannot import imovie to iDVD I only have transferred one and then all of the other files are not seen as movies so I can not import them?? Does that make since
8- When we were useing the Sony Camera originally we could not import the video to the MAC because it did not have the correct firewire cable and it would not been read onto the MAC computer. So, we have to buy the flip4mac equipment so that I would be able ot download the inoformation to the computer by a wmv.file dvd so we are having difficulites trying to import that file.
I hope these answers clear up the question a little bit more and sorry that your answers brought out more questions. Thank you very much for helping me. I was using a different program in my college class so changing to imovie and idvd has been a huge struggle for me. Thank you once again. -
How to diagnose rapid memory growth in Solaris 10 java server application
Hi,
We have a production java based server that experienced large memory growth recently and we are looking for help in diagnosing what might be the cause. The memory footprint of this java server application is limited to 120M using the jvm -Xmx switch. The server process size held consistently at around 180M until an event happened that caused the process size to rapidly increase to aprox 3G. We used the java jstat command to check the application heap usage within the jvm was within the specified limits.
This application can be performs java Runtime exec's to run simple shell scripts from a variety of java threads in the server app.
We have attempted to search for a cause by analysing the output of the pmap, pfiles, and pstack commands but have been unsuccessfull at this. We have also attempted to run the libumem.so library with the application in the hopes of using mdb to find out where the heap usage is. Unfortunately when we followed the instruction on using limumem the application stopped working due an ELF error.
The following are what we used for libumem:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libumem.so
UMEM_DEBUG=default
UMEM_LOGGING=transaction
export LD_PRELOAD UMEM_DEBUG UMEM_LOGGING
<run the application>
The error we got is:
ld.so.1: nohup: fatal: /usr/lib/libumem.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32
We are looking for advice on how to proceed in finding the cause for this growth. In addition to the diag info below we have captured the core file for the application from gcore. The following is the output from pfiles, pmap, pstack, and the showrev command.
Any help/suggestions appreciated.
Steve

SOCK_DGRAMI was finally able to reproduce this problem where I observed that within a 5 minute time span the jvm process grew from around 180M (VS) / 100M (RSS) to 2G (VS) / 1G (RSS). Here are some samplings at the end of my dtrace run showing the largest allocations that were made. We suspect this might be a JVM bug (since jstat reports our heap is well below the 120M limit we specified). Do you have any suggestions on how we might resolve this issue ?
Thanks,
Steve

Hi,
We have a production java based server that experienced large memory growth recently and we are looking for help in diagnosing what might be the cause. The memory footprint of this java server application is limited to 120M using the jvm -Xmx switch. The server process size held consistently at around 180M until an event happened that caused the process size to increase rapidly to aprox 3G within a 4 minute period. We used the java jstat command to check the application heap usage within the jvm and it was within the specified limits.
We have collected a variety of diagnostic information (pmap, pstack, pfiles, etc - available on request) as well as output from dtrace using a script that is used to count the number of memory allocations. The dtrace script and tail end of this message.
Any help in interpreting the dtrace output in the hopes of pinpointing a cause for the large memory allocations would be greatly appreciated.
Steve

-8588966992This isn't a heap space issue with the java application though, which is what these tools you mentioned would be used to diagnose. The heap space usage of our java app is remaining constant and below the specified limit of 120M but the process continues to grow as we speak.
I can only conclude that this is most likely a jvm memory leak. I should have probably made this clearer in the subject heading.
Anyone know how to file a bug against the solaris jvm ? -
Ever since I installed InD CS4, and after doing several edits on different pubs, I'm no longer able to open the panels by clicking on them. They just sit there and stare at me. I have to close InD and restart it for them to start working again. Is this a memory leak or what?
Thanks Nini... I'm embarassed to report that it appears to have been low battery power in my wireless mouse!

Strange heavy memory loss (storage) when saving pdf dokument in Preview
This is already taking all of my day and I still havent got closer to a solution, so I really need some help!!
I am currently editing lots of pdfs and other files for notes.
There is one particular big file, ca. 300 MB (part of a book). When I edit this file in Preview (underlining etc.) and save my changes, I loose almost the whole size of the file in disk space (almost regardless of how much I change).
Saving 10 times, that equals ca. 3 GB. Since I am a diligent "back-upper", I loose ca. 3 GB every 90 minutes.
Over the last 3 days, this has consumed more or less 40 GB of my storage space.
I have restarted several times and had to delete a lot of files; the sleepimage file is ca. 1 GB big only, so that is not the problem;
so I have used "Disk Utility" to localize the massive space use.
But here comes the part that made me come here:
Disk utility registers the storage loss in total numbers (35 GB free, next time only 32 GB free), but not within the folders (the single sizes of the folders -Application; Library; User etc-), their sizes stay the same!
I looked through all the forums but I cant figure out what happened to my disk space.
I need some help, cause I need to restore those 40 GB they are being used by something completetly useless somewhere.
Thank you for your time!In an application that supports Auto Save and Versions, open a document and select
File ▹ Revert to... ▹ Browse All Versions...
from the menu bar. A browser view of the saved versions will open, with the current one on the left and the saved versions stacked on the right.
To delete a saved version, select it, then move the cursor to the top of the display. The menu bar will appear. Select
File ▹ Revert to... ▹ Delete This Version...
and confirm when prompted. Click Done to exit the version browser. -
Few days after Belle update my N8 suddenly lost 20 MB on C for no apparent reason. I've seen others report this, apparently same thing also happens few days after reset. Anyone know what it is? I'm not short of memory, just curious.
Solved!
Go to Solution.Ah, cheers for that, you've actually confirmed my only vague suspicion. In the process of freeing up memory I deleted reserved file from C: Private\102072c4 (20 MB) - this is a FOTA file that recreates when you use *#0000# or SW update. That must have been it.

Major Memory Loss after Yosemite 10.10.2
Greetings, all.
I've had Yosemite installed since the first day it was released, and have diligently (now regretfully) applied every update since. The only trouble I had to date was a very infrequent and intermittent WiFi disconnection. Up until last week, and according to Memory Clean, I consistently saw 11.5-12 GB of free memory with no apps running. Even when running VMWare (4 GB allocated) plus 6-8 others apps simultaneously, I would still see 3-4 GB of available memory. Performance has always been solid. However, since installing the latest Yosemite update just last week, I now see 8 GB of free memory with nothing running, and 1.5 GB of memory available when running VMWare (2 GB now allocated) and only 2 apps running (Chrome, Messages). Additionally, this usually drops into MB with fans running and sluggish performance.
What's happened?!? Really appreciate any expertise and guidance as this has significantly degraded performance on my MacBook (specs and report below).
Perhaps there's another thread I've missed. Do share if that's the case.
I followed steps in this article to no avail.
Guide: How to solve Yosemite memory leaks and CPU usage
I downloaded EtreCheck per this thread, but not certain if there is something standing out as the culprit.
Yosemite made my MacBook Pro so slow. Need help.

I actually had skimmed that very article, and do see green in the memory pressure. Interesting. Perhaps the concern arose more so because of my fans kicking on more and the third-party app Memory Clean all of a sudden started showing lower figures. Correlating that with the fans raised the concern. Yes, it's green under Memory Pressure, but why would my fans be running more--especially with hardly any apps on? Are you saying then that Yosemite will apply all RAM available to what's running and as I run more and more apps it will gradually reallocate RAM across everything? Should the fans running more concern me? They do get quieter gradually; I guess with this gradual "reallocation".
Thanks for the tip about McAfee. I'm pretty sure that it's standard from IT at work, but I'll double-check. -
Power cut / itunes update leads to itunes memory loss :-(
I am running a mac mini only 6 months old with 2.5ghz intel I5 Core.
Where i live we suffer many power cuts. Everything was working fine with itunes, but now itunes is having real issues with locating many of my files.
I have around 260gb in music altogether, and after using itunes for many years, i have spent a lot of time making smart playlists to organise everything just the way i like it. All my favourite songs i have spent time giving them 5 star ratings so Itunes knows to put them in the "My Top Rated" smart folder.
I keep my music on an external 1Tb hard drive. Itunes knows where the folder is located via preference settings.
After a recent spurt of power cuts, followed by an unrelated external had drive failure (only movies), i went back to my mac and discovered that around 30% of my music was missing. This was indicated by small exclamation marks placed just to the left of the individual track names in itunes.
Off course, the first thing i did was panic, but my fears were soon put to rest, when i checked the master file on my extrenal hard drive where the itunes folder is located, the files were still there.
When i try to play the selected file, the message :- " the song "______" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
i have 2 main issues here:-
1. Itunes will only let you locate individual files at a time, if i have to locate 30% of 260gb, i will still be till next year.
2. when i follow the option to locate, find the file and click open, Itunes crashes after hanging some time.
I can dump all itunes indexing files and copy my master itunes file (all 260gb) onto another drive, then delete itunes application and reinstall, but i will loose all my playlists and 5 star ratings. I am also concerne about song degradation which can happen when copying files. I have many Flac converted files which are 320kbps.
I have read on the apple.com itunes windows forum that there is a script to locate missing files, is there a similair method for mac?
Is there another method for Itunes to reindex the complete folder where the music is located without loosing smart playlists and 5 star ratings?
Any help appreciated. If iTunes is busy saving the library file (which it does frequently) and there is power loss then the file can become corrupt. This can cause links to be broken, and if the library file is corrupt enough it will cause iTunes to freeze.
Your solution is to back up your library (especially the library.itl) frequently so you have good copy from which to start, and buy a power source backup. The other things about which you are asking are not real long-term solutions giving the conditions you describe.
There isn't any script for repairing links on Mac. You can check Dougscripts web site. There was one there but it wasn't highly successful from my reading of it. iTunes itself has a minor repair links feature built into it whereby if you find one link it will ask if you want to try to find others based on the same criteria. If that isn't working then that's as far as it goes.
I'm not too clear what you mean about song degradation in copying files. Yes, any file copying can theoretically cause error, but there are also error checking routines. Still, even just leaving files on a drive can cause errors as sectors suddenly go bad.
The main problem you have is computers are not designed to survive frequent abrupt shutdown. Macs aren't too bad and last night we had a sudden shutdown twice and my computer started up fine both times (hats off the Apple). You need to deal with that problem and your iTunes will not corrupt as frequently. I have been using my library since the early 2000s and never once had it go corrupt on me. -
HI,i'm having problems with the phone memory on my n91,when trying to send a text or picture message,i get a 'memory full, please delete some data message',i have deleted all my pictures, text messages, videos and games, but still get this message.
My hard drive still has 1.5gb of memory left,i have 400 odd songs on the hard drive, can this be affecting it?Let's just clarify there are 3 memories in the N91.
1. The Hard Drive
2. The Phone Memory
3. The RAM
When running programs RAM is consumed, the more programs or processes are open the less RAM is available.
So even if your Hard Drive has 3 GB free if your RAM is full you are "Out of memory".
Some applications like email, contacts and messaging use the Phone memory to store their data. So if you have received many pictures via BT or MMS or emails your Phone memory may be full and thus an "Out of Memory" will also occur.
You cannot check the RAM status, but when you power cycle the phone it will get flushed.
You can check the Phone memory status and Hard Drive status going to Tools->File Manager and then using the Options menu.
Hope this helps clarify.

Hi,
I am hoping someone can help me.
I've got a 6280 and have the usual problems that most people get with them.
I've got another problem with it.. The phone memory is disappearing fast.
According to the memory status I have used 114.2kb
I only have a Free memory of 4.0kb
Messaging 8.8kb
Applications 96.0kb
Bookmarks 9.5kb
Where is my memory going? I can barely store a text message on it (I used to be able to store over 200)
Thanks in Advance
GazWell it's either you have installed a theme thats really large or it's this, eneter *#0000# what version is it? (second line)

hey, recently I wanted to transfer some files to another mac computer via bluetooth, so the transfer started, but as it was passing it was consuming memory so when my memory got to zero kb available the transfer stoped and i didn't get my disk space back, somebody plese help me I lost like 20Gb.
Use WhatSize to find out where the 20GB of unwanted data is on your hard disk. Whether or not it is safe to delete that data depends on where it is and whether it is currently in use or not.

call to Support resulted in an Archive and Install
exercise. >
However, I now find that an astonishing amount of
memory has been gobbled up. Out of my system’s 250
Gb. I now have only 205Gb.free. I am wondering
whether the original System installation has been
archived and is still lurking on the machine. >
Yes an Archive and Install moves the important (old) system files to a folder called "Previous Systems" on your hard drive while installing the new system in its place. It is recommended you hang on to this for awhile in case you find something missing from the new system and need to copy from the old. If you are satisfied with the new system, you can just delete the "Previous Systems" folder. I did an Archive and Install recently and so far have found no reason to go into that "Previous Systems" folder. -
I just received a new Macbook Pro with a 128g SSD (drive). It is my first SSD but I really wanted the extra speed and I thought the 256g was just too pricy at this point. Anyway...
I know there is some loss out of the gate but was surprised to see the Capacity of the 128g was 112.68g and Available was 92.68 before adding anything. Does that sound about right?surprised to see the Capacity of the 128g was 112.68g
It's a math thing. Storage media manufacturers use base 10 math (1 GB = 1000 MB, etc.), but computers use base 2 math (1 GB = 1024 MB, etc.). See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte#Consumer_confusion
Means you 'lose' about 7% of drive space based on the manufacturer specs, actually more 'loss' the larger the drive.
So, you drive really holds only ~113 GB, and with the ~20 GB of preinstalled files, that should account for everything.
If you want to gain back some space, you can perform a custom install and eliminate things you won't use - for example, omitting all printer drivers except HP saved me ~2 GB, and omitting GarageBand (with all the support files) saved ~4 GB. Also, note that Snow Leopard (due out tomorrow) actually takes up ~7 GB less space than a typical Leopard install.
