Rapidly disappearing disk space - 19GB windowserver.log?

Hi,
I noticed that my disk space has been rapidly disappearing recently - now at the rate of 50-100MB per minute!!! Couldn't figure out for the life of me where it was going. I ran Disk Inventory X and it is showing that the file windowserver.log is currently up to about 19GB! I don't even know what this file is for but I know that it's not supposed to be THAT big. And continuing to grow every minute. After a restart I jump back up to about 43GB of free space but it doesn't last. Also the comp (MacBook Pro 2.16 Core2 Duo) is running really hot, currently between 145 and 150 F with only finder and firefox running. Can anyone tell me what is going on here?
Thanks.

Hi--
Go to your System Preferences and look at the "Accounts" preferences. Select your user account on the left hand side, then look at the "Login Items" tab. If you have any items there besides "iTunes Helper", make a note of what they are and delete them, then reboot and see if the problem goes away. If it does, add back your login items one by one and see if one of them causes problems again.
If you've installed new software recently, and see an item in that list that relates to you new software, just delete it and reboot, maybe it's just that one piece of software.

  • Disappearing disk space Windows Server 2012 R2 with SharePoint Server 2013 Enterprise

I've got an interesting problem with a virtual machine in our VMWare environment.  It is Windows Server 2012 R2 with SharePoint Server 2013 Enterprise installed.  I started out with a 60GB disk and it started running out of space, so I increased
it in VMWare and extended the partition to 100GB.  Well, that lasted for a bit and so I extended it again.  I've done this 3 or 4 times and now I've got a 160GB disk with about 2-3GB of space remaining (and it started with 10GB remaining).
WinDirStat shows 105GB of <Unknown> space being used, which is probably my issue.  However, I can't determine what this is and it keeps growing like a tapeworm.  The context menu on the <Unknown> files has all the options disabled,
so WinDirStat doesn't appear to have access to whatever the file(s) is/are.  I've performed several chkdsk /f on the C: drive and nothing bad is reported.  I don't have any restore points and am not running VSS (that I'm aware of).  The pagefile
reports as being about 4.9GB, so that's not the issue.  No large files are shown anywhere and my explorer settings are set to show me all files, including system files.
When I try to run WinDirStat with elevated permissions, it hangs and becomes unresponsive.
I've even resorted to running CCleaner to see if it found anything, but it simply found the standard temp files and such...about 1GB.
I'm pulling my hair out...and I don't have much to start with.  Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks
    Russ

It appears that somehow, Microsoft Fusion Assembly binding logging was turned on and many of the temp folders located at c:\users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\InetCache\IE were filling up with hundreds of thousands of Fusion HTM log files.
This is controlled by an entry in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fusion\ForceLog which was set to 1.  Hopefully, setting it back to zero will fix the issue.  As a result of figuring this out, I have recovered almost 80GB of disk
space occupied by the log files.
I thought WinDirStat would show me what I needed to know, but it turns out TreeSize (which I've used in the past) works much better.

  • Disk space issue with log files

I noticed that I was running out of disk space, so I downloaded OmniDiskSweeper and ran it. Turns out that the main culprit is log files. They are located in /private/var/log/asl. However, OmniDiskSweeper won't let me delete them (it doesn't give an error message or anything--it just won't delete the files). What are these .asl files and how can I delete them? I cannot see them when I open up the Finder, so I assume they are hidden. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Those log files are created by the "Apple System Log" process. The first thing I'd do is to use the Console utility to examine what's in them to see if there's anything obvious that should be fixed. In Console, open the "/var/log" item on the left, open the "asl" item, then select the first item in the list. You'll see a lot of gibberish, but you'll also see some text.
To navigate to those files in the Finder, use the menu item Go -> Go to Folder and type "/var/log/asl" (without the quotes) in the field, and click "Go".

  • Disappearing disk space--do I have a virus??

My disk space seems to be disappearing like crazy.... I have a 100GB unformatted (93.04 GB formatted according to Finder) system HDD, and I examined the size of every subfolder in "Macintosh HD" and came up with this:
    Users: 17.39 GB
    Applications: 3.66 GB
    System: 1.66 GB
    Library: 5.82 GB
    System Folder: 156.5 MB
Applications (Mac OS 9): 170.2 MB
    Backups: 903 MB
=About 30 GB (not that it makes that much difference, but assuming 1000 MB=1 GB).
There is NO WAY that even comes close to 93 GB. Even accounting for slack space, that doesn't make sense. (I'm not familiar with the ins and outs of HFS+). And to my knowledge this system has no hidden partitions on it. My trash is also completely empty, yet Finder tells me I have ZERO KB of space. Any thoughts what could account for all that missing space and how I might go about recovering it???

You don't have a virus. Look at these links.

  • Weird situation, disappearing disk space while using only few applications

    Hello
I got a weird warning when I had about 20gb of disk space available that my start up disk was empty and that I had to force quit Firefox, Finder and itunes.
I restarted the computer and once again there was approximately 20 gb left of disk space again, but looking at it, it started disappearing quickly all the way until I got the same warning. This time the applications I was using were Firefox, Ical, Mail and my widgets.
I restarted the computer once again and the 20gb were there again.
Anyone help me or have a clue what's going on?
    Thanks!!!

Hey Chris. that is happening to me too! I was using iTunes last night to update my iPad. First when I booted up, it gave me a "no camera detected" error (never happened before), then it says I had no free disk space as it tried to backup my iPad. I checked the hard disk and it said I had zero KB's available. So I deleted or moved a bunch of videos, pics, and files off of the computer and got it to have 13 GB's free on the hard drive. Then I rebooted and tried again. Same errors, showing 13 GB free at first but during iPad syncing, it fails saying that I have not enough free disk space and then I check it and its says I have zero space left. Shut down and restart, and I have 13 GB's free again. Its maddening and I dont know whats going on! I was afraid my hard drive is gonna fail! If anyone else can help us, or Chris if you found out what was happening, please let me know! I have an older model MacBook Pro from about 2005. it has been slow lately but otherwise working fine! Please help! Thanks! Tom

  • The Case of the Disappearing Disk Space

Last week when I noticed I only had 5.5 gigs on my hard disk, I decided to start deleting files and programs that I didn't really need anymore. I ended up freeing up about 7 gigs! However, I have since noticed something peculiar...
As I use my computer (mostly browsing and e-mail, no other downloading), my hard disk mysteriously gets filled up. And I don't mean a few megabytes here and there, but rather more than two gigs in just a couple of days! This doesn't seem normal to me at all. Even if I do save files, they are usually just small Word documents for school. A few minutes ago, Finder said I had 10.7 gigs on my hard disk with the trash emptied. After I restarted, it said I had 13.15. Since then, I've already lost .02 gigs and the only programs I have open are Mail and Safari.
Can someone please explain to me what is happening here? Thanks!

Okay, my hard disk is at 12.71 now and a random .rtf file reads 8 kb. I'll check it later (if I am doing this right...)
You don't seem to be doing it correctly. Open TextEdit, create a new window, and note down the usage of disk space reported by WhatSize by typing it out into this window. After the amount of free space on the hard disk has decreased, run WhatSize again and note down what is reported this time. Compare the differences in the two sets of notes.
Another possibility is to choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, enter /private/var/vm/ as the folder's path, and keep an eye on the number of items in this folder as you use the computer.

  • Unable to install SCCM roles - reporting not enough available disk space on to complete this operation

    Hi.
I am having a strange problem with my SCCM 2012 R2 installation running on Windows Server 2008 R2.
I am not able to add any new roles to the server.
Event log reports: "Product: Application Web Service -- There is not enough available disk space on  to complete this operation. Installation requires at least 10MB free disk space."
awebsvcMSI.log reports: "Product: Application Web Service -- Configuration failed."
    and
"Windows Installer reconfigured the product. Product Name: Application Web Service. Product Version: 5.00.7958.1000. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation. Reconfiguration success or error status: 1603."
I have three disks in the server.
C: (OS) ~8.7 GB free space
D: (SCCM) ~7.69 GB free space
E: (data) ~52.4 GB free space
I have NO_SMS_ON_DRIVE.SMS files on C: and D:. I tried removing it from D: and restarting the server without any effect.
Does anyone have a solution to this?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Disk Space disappears!

I recently was running low on space on my hard drive ( less than 2 gig remaining on the 75 gig drive) and decided to copy large files from my G4 Powerbook to an external drive, about 12 gigabytes, to free up space. I copied the files then dragged them to the trash and emptied it. The hard drive indicated that it had not about 15 gig available. All good right? Afterward when I rebooted, the memory was still down down on the hard drive, this time to near zero. I then unplugged the maching from the large monitor, rebooted again and then it showed that I had 11 gig available. So, I updated my software as per the latest apple updates and also checked permissions just to be on the safe side. All went well, and afterward I had 16 gig available. So I shut down, came in the next day and now have zero memory available again, can't even download my email. I have rebooted, unplugged, removed the battery, etc but still no memory available. Now I get an error message saying my startup disk is almost full and to delete files. All the files I originally deleted are still gone, 12 plus gigs, so I really don't understand this. Can anyone advise me why the files I deleted are gone but the disk space hasn't been freed up? I am running OSX 10.3.9.
    Thanks

    tnarg:
There are a number of possible explanations for your disappearing HDD space as the article Where Did My Disk Space Go? shows.
I suggest that you download and run the little utility What Size. Look for unusually large and unfamiliar files. My guess is that you have an expanding Console log file. If WhatSize bears that out follow roam's fix in the thread Self-expanding console.log files!!!
Please do post back with further questions or comments.

  • Disappearing Hard Disk Space

For several days, I have watched my available hard disk space "disappear" before my eyes. I should have approximately 13 GB of free space available, but this number has gradually dropped to zero and then back up to 6 GB and currently hovers around 2-3 GB. This has happened over the last 3-4 days. I don't recall installing any new software, drivers, etc. A virus scan detected no viruses. Disk Utility detected no problems. System Profiler logs don't seem to show any processes that are unusually large and consuming. Where did my hard drive space go and how can I get it back?

    Are you using File Vault?

  • "Not enough disk space" when there seems to be (+ rapid memory consumption)

[Note: I originally posted this in the iDVD section, but due to an answer I got there to another question and further conversations with my daughter, figured out this is probably an iMovie question?]
I'm a newbie to iDVD and iMovie and Forums (my last Mac was a Performa 6360--still using it for the family budget). I got my daughter a MacBook as a graduation gift. She is using it to combine movie inputs from a wedding/reception that come from digital camreas and a couple of video cameras. We went to Flip4Mac to get the necessary software/features to import .wmv files (only way we could download one of the video cameras was by going from PC to Mac--can't remember if it was a Sony or Canon).
Issue: When she tries to import vidoes into iMovie HD 6.0.3 which have already been transferred to her computer, she gets: "The file could not be imported: There is not enough disk space to import Macintosh HD/Users/julie/pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2007/Roll8/CIMG1442.AVI" [She says this is about a 4 min. clip.]
Basically the question is how to get more room on her disk to import and to save? She seems to only be able to Save--she can't Save Project as an option because it says she doesn't have enough disk space (she's already deleted the Trash). Help says you need to have more than 400mb of free space or it gets difficult but the indicator shows 28.8GB free space left...so there seems to be some kind of disconnect?? (Or maybe we're talking apples and oranges?)
[Even more disturbing, just in the last couple of days with only a little time spent on the computer, the 28.8 GB has dropped to 2.3GB--obviously there is something she is doing that she is not aware of or shouldn't be doing that is consuming memory at a rapid pace.] On top of that, she also gets the same error message when she tries to burn the project onto a disk using iDVD???
I went through the first 5 pages of the forum and couldn't see a similar problem, but then I may have not known what to look for?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...she's trying to give the DVD as a Wedding gift--somewhat belated.

    Hello Karstn Schluter,
This is fm's daughter who is havin ghte difficulites. at the end you tell me to try to answer 1-8 so i will try.
1- how can you tell if the avi is containing divx? or not?? do I need to just keep this in mind when importing these files
2- I have not brought in an external drive. I did try making my laptop computer a harddrive so I could import my imovie poject to my eMAC at one point, but it was not allowing me to do that either. Because I had to have it in DVD form or something
3- No I did not segment the internal drive....sorry How do you do that??? Right now I am trying to find out what is taking up all the memory and Hard Disk Drive space....i do not know how to do that either....Do you know how???
4-Yes I know flip4mac is for wmv....I guess what that question was emplying was that I also have wmv files that I am trying to import to imovieHD and that is not working either...I can get my avi to get into imovieHD, but not my wmv. files
5-THank you for the tip with the trash then another question to this one how do you delet projects that are taking up memory that are no longer in use?
6-Thank you for the tip...so then ignore the not enough disk space.....how can you alter the disk space so that you can save the project under save project as and not just save project?
7- Sorry my dad was miss informed I cannot import the wmv. files to imovie and I cannot import imovie to iDVD I only have transferred one and then all of the other files are not seen as movies so I can not import them?? Does that make since
8- When we were useing the Sony Camera originally we could not import the video to the MAC because it did not have the correct firewire cable and it would not been read onto the MAC computer. So, we have to buy the flip4mac equipment so that I would be able ot download the inoformation to the computer by a wmv.file dvd so we are having difficulites trying to import that file.
I hope these answers clear up the question a little bit more and sorry that your answers brought out more questions. Thank you very much for helping me. I was using a different program in my college class so changing to imovie and idvd has been a huge struggle for me. Thank you once again.

    Dear all
i am facing a problem in my database
the database is in archive log mode and continuous archiving of log is filling up the disk space
please let me know what should i do so that at the end of activity there should be no complaints of logs filling up
i wil ensure the big disk space
please let me know what kind of administration i have to do with this issue ...

    hello Sagar
when you use RMAN for backup you can set RETENTION POLICY for window of day or redundancy for example
    RMAN> CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 3 DAYS;
    or
    RMAN> CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 3;
and when you backup use "BACKUP ... PLUS ARCHIVELOG" for example
    BACKUP DEVICE TYPE sbt
    DATABASE PLUS ARCHIVELOG;
    it cause that RMAN when backup your database , backup your archived logs too ;
and about that two first CONFIGURE command
first command cause backupfiles and archived log files that backuped up before than 3 days signed obsolete in V$BACKUP_FILES view
(you can query the V$BACKUP_FILES view and check the OBSOLETE column)
second command cause backupfiles and archived log files that backuped up 3 times signed obsolete in V$BACKUP_FILES view
and if you use "DELETE OBSOLETE ..." command in RMAN it delete obsolete files
and your archived logs that backued up and are obsolete will be delete
AND you can use DBMS_SCHEDULER for synchronize this routine
