Raster and vector..Photoshop to Illustrator

I created a logo in Photoshop (it is now a raster image), now need to enlarge it and have it printed on Tshirts and signs.  Can I transfer it to Illustrator making it a Vector file, or does it need to be created in Illustrator to be a Vector file?

Kristi,
The difference between raster and vector graphics is far more than just resolution dependence. That's just one aspect. Just as important--even moreso in textile screen printing--is that vector artwork is built from objects. This makes all the difference in the world wihen it comes to practical production needs for "logos" and for screen printing.
For example: Okay, suppose the raster image of the "logo" is oversampled enough to avoid pixelation (which is actually less of an issue with screen printing) when enlarged to the size needed for the T-shirt. Someone's making a blunderbuss statement like  "you can then color separate it" isn't even beginning to think through the practical requirements of the reproduction process. Yes, you can print color separations from a raster image. But what kind of separations do you get? Assuming a CMYK or RGB raster image, you'll get halftone dots. Halftone dots are inherently problematic in screen printing. Most common screen printing assumes line art and spot color, not contone art separated to halftones.
There are methods for creating raster artwork in Photoshop which will result in color separations suitable for spot color and screen printing separations, but it's far more involved than just designing in CMYK or RGB and then making some automagic "conversion." It requires just as much forethought and understanding of the process as building it correctly as vector artwork.
To advise you correctly, one has to know more about the specific situation in question regarding the specific original artwork and the capabilities of the screen printing house re halftones and color separations.
A similar set of considerations apply to signs (which you also mention.)
Trust me: If your focus is "logos" destined for screen printing and/or signage, and you intend to make it your standard workflow to create the original artwork in Photoshop and then use Illustrator as some kind of automagic "conversion" utility when you think you need vector graphics--then you are very much barking up the wrong tree, and are creating untold problems for yourself before you even start.

  • Matching Raster and Vector RGB color in InDesign CS3.

We print on a Durst Lambda RGB imaging device to photographic paper. All color management is done as an early bind (raster files are converted to the printer's color space and vector colors are chosen from a palette database). So basically the files must go through InDesign without any color change in raster or vector information. We have clients that require specific RGB builds for logo colors the are present in both their raster and vector files.
Color Management is set to "North American General Purpose 2" with "RGB: Preserve Embedded Profiles" selected.
    1) The file is exported as a PDF 1.4, High Quality, PDF/X_None.
    2) The PDF was ripped on a Cheetah RIP (Jaws level 3) with no color management on.
    3) Solid raster colors such as 0-255-0 will reproduce as 0-255-1.
    4) The color differences between the raster and vector are usually 1-4 points.
    5) The vector is consistent as was input in the programit's only the raster that changes. When you are trying to match raster and vectors logo colors it is a killer.
However, I can go into the InDesign (or Illustrator) color settings and turn color management off (This is our current workflow). In doing this the RGB working space uses the monitor profile and "color management policies" are set to OFF. With these settings the RGB raster and vector match. The problem with this work flow is two fold:
    1) We have other devices than our RGB Durst Lambda that can use the InDesign color managementVutek flat bed 3200 and grand format 3360.
    2) We have had many occurrences where the custom "color management off" settings have reverted back to the default "North American General Purpose 2"without any intervention.
I have tried this with different RIP's with the same results.
Does anyone have an idea to create a simple PDF workflow and keep the color information consistent?
    Program: InDesign CS3 5.0.2
    Platform: Mac OS 10.5.2
Computer: G5 tower with 4 gigs of RAM

I believe that setting is an old Illustrator setting that has been saved to effectively turn the color management off. The monitor profile effects the image displayedit doesn't effect the color transform.
Anyway, the color management I want to use is the "North American General Purpose 2".
    To reiterate:
    The procedure:
    1) The file is exported as a PDF 1.4, High Quality, PDF/X_None.
    2) The PDF was ripped on a Cheetah RIP (Jaws level 3) with no color management on.
    The Problem:
    3) Solid raster colors such as 0-255-0 will reproduce as 0-255-1It changes from the original raster color placed in InDesign.
    4) The color differences between the raster and vector are usually 1-4 points.
    5) The vector is consistent as was input in the programit's only the raster that changes. When you are trying to match raster and vectors logo colors it is a killer.
To summarize, the color of the raster file will change from the original that was place into the documenteven though nothing was selected in InDesign that would change the color (i.e. profile conversion to an output profile or a transparency effect used). The change is slightbut there.

How do I create a text style in CC libraries? Every time I drag and drop text into library form Photoshop or illustrator it turns it into a graphic.
If I select the text layer and click the text style button in the library it just creates a new text style for Myriad Pro 12pt - I'm not using that anywhere in my document.

I realize AI is an illustration program.
Do you realize it is an object-based vector-based program? Do you know the difference between raster-based and vector-based content?
My question seems to be all over the forum but no one has been able to answer other than exporting to these file formats, which make text look awful and of no use....
And yet everyone else in the world makes proper web images every day using a plethora of programs, including these...go figure.
    Am I missing something?
    Yep. Pretty much.
Hello Adobe! People use transparency on website logos.
Hello, cocteau! What you're calling "transparency" is inherent to object-based vector artwork. But web browsers don't support object-based vector artwork, except via file formats like Flash and SVG, or by viewing as a PDF in a plug-in version of Reader. Raster imaging in general only supports "transparency" by either indexing a specific color (i.e.; "don't display this color", as in GIF) or including an alpha channel (i.e.; "blend all the pixels with existing pixels, based on values from this extra channel", as in PNG). It's all in the raster file format you use, cocteau; it has little-to-nothing to do specifically with Adobe software. Such things are among the most basic matters understood by someone doing web design.
When I export an eps from .ai file, and open the eps in photoshop,...I save as a gif for the web, it goes back to the original problem...creates jagged text. I"m giving up on this garbage...Thanks a lot adobe! Lower the price of this software if this is all that can be done.
Once it leaves Photoshop (or Illustrator, or whatever) as a non-proprietary raster image format, it's all about what the format can do re "transparency". You can do this stuff with most any graphics program. You should read about basic web design and the differences between raster and vector content, rather than rant.

  • Photoshop to illustrator plus noob = arrrgggghhhhh

    Hi
I'm producing images in PS CS3, saving as a pdf then opening in Illy CS3 and adding a contour cut/stroke line. For the printer/cutter to see the Contour cut line the image needs a background.
What I'm then trying to do is layout 30 or so individual images in a single Illustrator document but when I place my individual pdf's onto the artboard they still have the white background from PS. How do I get rid of it so I can layout the images close to one another?
I've spent the last week trying to figure it out and have only succeeded in tying my brain in knots and scaring the dog a lot. (I have a feeling that this is something very simple but I've just confused myself so much that I can't see the wood for the trees)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    TIA
    Simon

The first thing you need to recognize is that plotting/cutting/printing sign work--although ubiquitous--is not immediately recognized in forums like this. Illustrator users are primarily oriented toward offset-printing, desktop inkjet printing, or web work. The vast majority of Illustrator and Photoshop users probably have no experience at all in large format one-off cutting/plotting/printing. (Heck, nowadays many AI users have never set foot in an offset pressroom, either.)
Similarly, neither Illustrator nor Photoshop nor any other Adobe application are expressly designed with cutting/plotting/printing hardware and workflows in mind. (Corel Draw--at least in its documentation and community, if not in actual software features--more than any other mainstream illustration program, openly recognizes that market segment.)
Whether the software focus follows the user focus or the other way 'round (chicken or the egg), the bottom line is, you need to understand that you represent a minority here when you discuss signage cutting/printing. So when doing so, you should make that clear at the outset of your post: "I'm preparing graphics for output on a [brand, model] large-format sign vinyl printer/cutter."
    > I'm producing images in PS CS3, saving as a pdf...
Why PDF? Don't do that. All you are trying to do is get a raster image from Photoshop into Illustrator. Keep things simple. Determine if your output device works best with CMYK or RGB raster images. Create the raster image in the appropriate color mode. Get it looking the way you want it, crop away any excess white space beyond the artwork itself, fully flatten it, and save it as an ordinary TIFF file.
Place the TIFF in Illustrator (again, in a file of the appropriate color mode). Draw the cutting path on top of it.
Now. The second thing you need to understand (actually, a ramification of the first): There is no express support in Illustrator for the cutting device. Illustrator itself doesn't know a "cutting path" from any other. So you have to have some mechanism by which to "notify" the printer/cutter device which path(s) is/are to be used for cutting, as opposed to which are for mere printing.
That mechanism differs among the various device manufacturers (and even among a given manufacturer's models). For example, I use a Roland device, the software driver for which recognizes a particular Swatch name and color as the designator for paths that are meant to be cut. Roland provides an AI Swatch Library that contains the cut swatch as well as swatches for the resin ribbions used in my device.
Other device/software combinations uses different means. Depending upon your device, you may have to open the AI file in a dedicated sign printing/cutting software and designate the cutting paths there; or you may even have to assemble the raster image with the cutting path in that separate software (in which case, you wouldn't have to use Illustrator at all--just draw the vector path in Photoshop, and export it as a separate .ai file).
So you need to explain some about your workflow. Is your output device one which will be driven by a print driver (including cutting) that can be invoked from Illustrator's print command? Or is the driver for your device something that you launch as a separate application and "load" with an Illustrator file? Or does your particular setup require use of one of the several vertical-market layout programs specifically taylored for sign work? If the latter, what kind of AI files can it import?
    > What I'm then trying to do is layout 30 or so individual images in a single Illustrator document but when I place my individual pdf's onto the artboard they still have the white background from PS. How do I get rid of it so I can layout the images close to one another?
Again, CROP the raster image in Photoshop, before placing it in Illustrator. Alternatively, (again, using my particular device as example--your capabilities may differ) you can use the cutting path as a Clipping Mask in Illustrator, and then directSelect the clipping path and designate it as the cutting path. But I don't recommend that, because if the raster image is supposed to bleed, the device would have to perfectly register its printing operation with its cutting operation. Better to leave a proper bleed of the image beyond the bounds of the cutting path.
    > I've spent the last week trying to figure it out...
In principle, it is all quite simple. In practice, it is not, for these reasons:
First, the poor way that software vendors write their documentation these days. There is too much assumption that end users understand the most
basic aspects of things like file formats. Your saving raster images from Photoshop as PDF is a case-in-point. PDF is a "container" format--it can contain both raster and vector artwork, as well as live text objects. But so can AI. There's no reason inherent in your description to justify placing one "container"(PDF) inside another "container" (AI), just to output another "container" (PDF or EPS) to a vinyl printer/cutter.
Second, similar assumptions on the part of plotter/cutter/printer manufacturers, and their self-protectionist associations with the afore-mentioned vertical market (read "overpriced") software vendors.
Third, Adobe's near total neglect of POP, large format, and sign trade segments of the graphics community in the features and interfaces of their products. (Frankly, same thing goes for technical drawing.)

Bought a new Canon MG7540 printer to replace the old HP A618. When printing vector objects from Illustrator, they look like graphics from dandy (8 bits) ... no smooth, all cubes ... if do raster than print perfectly.  Who knows how to treat it? No well to rasterize vector before each printing. OS - MacOs 10.10.

Have you read the User's Guide for that printer?  Odds are you will get reasonable prints.  However, it is a photographic printer.  That said, it should print excellent quality photographic files.  To get smooth lines in Illustrator, try Preferences > Use Anti-Aliased Artwork.  That will smoothen the output.  If, for some reason, that does not work, try Print > Save As PDF > open PDF in Reader and print from there.  Check the User's Guide for media sizes available for your particular printer.  Setup your artboard to the size page you want the image to print on.  Use View > Show Page Tiling ( to see where the page's printable area lies.  Align the page with the artboard using the Page tool.

  • Adobe CS3: Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, and Flash (Not opening)

    Hi,
I have had the adobe creative suite suite 3 Deisgn premium for over an year now.  Recently over the past 2 months I am no longer able to open up any of the following programs:
    Photoshop
    Dreamweaver
    Illustrator
    Flash
They have worked for me in the past but now they are just not opening up for me.  I have tried plenty of things such as:
Uninstalling the whole cd then reinstalling
    Calling customer service
Browsing/googling for ways to fix it
Yet I still have been yet to get this issue resolved.  I have tried installing the CS4 30 day trial and that works fine.  But I want my CS3 version to work.  I tried everything.  The thing is I do not get an error message either on the these so there is no way of titling this issue.  If it helps I have windows vista.  Well please let me know what you come up with .  My email is [email protected]  Thank you!
    Brett Ryan

What does happen?     When I double click on them nothing happens for a second it gives me the loading signal but nothing comes up.
You say no error message - how far in the boot process does the program get?  Does it just not respond at all?  Does the program load-box appear and freeze?  Does the program load-box appear and dissapear?  Does the computer freeze up in the middle of the load?
You never end up seeing anything for any of the applications except for photoshop which loads but then closes right away.  So it just doesnt respond at all.  But there is no freezing.  So the load-box only appears and dissapears when I open photoshop. but for everything else it just never appears.
Does the process display in your processes list?
                No it does not display
Did you install/uninstall/delete anything around the time this started?
I'm pretty sure I didnt uninstall or install anything around the  time it started.  I think I would remember if it did.  So i'm pretty sure I did not.
Did you try going back to a restore point before this started?  No I did not.
Have you run a thorough virus scan?  Yes I have and nothing comes up.

  • Can I have a decreased / cheaper monthly priced membership for some time, by keeping active only Photoshop CC, Illustrator CC, InDesign CC and Acrobat?

Hello, and good evening from Athens, Greece.
I would like to ask a question concerning my CC membership.
I’ve started 1 and a half year ago by paying 29,99 € for the entire CC (all programs). Now, it’s 49,99 € and I’m having a really difficult time to keep it this way. I’m living in a country which is in the middle of crisis and my profession as a graphic designer, is not an exception to reduced spendings on advertising.
My question is, can I have a decreased / cheaper monthly priced membership for some time, by keeping active only Photoshop CC, Illustrator CC, InDesign CC and Acrobat? I don’t need for now the other apps. Can I have a membership plan only for those applications? I would very much appreciate your respond, a help and a solution to my issue.
    Thank you very much.

Freehand can't convert EPS files into editable vectors. I
    usually run
EPS files through Illustrator and then into Frehand. If you
    don't have
Illustrator you can convert the EPS into a PDF and that
    Freehand will
sometimes convert into editable vectors (though it does
    involve a lot
more clean up than going through Illustrator.)
