Raster Smart Object Appearance

Working in Photoshop CS4. I have placed a 900ppi bitmap image in a 300ppi CMYK file as a Smart Object Layer. Why does the edge of that image appear to be Anti-aliased?

This image shows the comparative magnification of 900% for the 300ppi CMYK image compared to 300% for the 900ppi Bitmap image. The 900ppi Bitmap image on the right which can have no tonality was placed in the 300ppi CMYK image as a Smart Object Layer and then takes on what appears to be an Anti-alias or tonal edge. Thanks for any and all comments.

• Photoshop CS6 Scaling issues: Vector/Raster smart objects

My team and I have noticed some strange issues when affecting the overall interpolation of a .psd via scaling, cropping, or canvas resize.
Test:
Original .psd is even x even overall pixel dimensions.
Original vector and raster smart object assets are all proportionally scaled with width x height percentages equal.
Preferences: "Snap vector tools and transforms to pixel grid" is turned off
Resize .psd via Image > Image Size palette.
Scale styles, constrain proportions selected.
Every interpolation style tested.
Resize the .psd to 50%
Result: All smart objects (both types) no longer are proportionately scaled. Usually off by a minor amount under 1/10th of a percent.
Some objects' center point shift a half pixel to the right or left.
This also occurs if we use the crop tool or resize the canvas.
Is this a known bug and if so, is there:
1) any setting to truly lock proportions?
2) any resolution being pursued currently?
Though the shift and the disproproptions seem minor, the overall quality of items such as icons, hairlines, and other things that should be more crisp become far more degraded in CS6 vs CS5.
We have over 100 users and need to evaluate if we should drop back down to CS5, where we weren't having any of these issues, as our work demands a lot of precision, so you can see why this is worrisome.
Thanks!

I'm not going to say anything about the abysmal rendering of Vector Smart Objects in CS6 because it'll be beating a dead horse but I can explain the issues you see with measurements after scaling.
The slightly disproportionate scaling and half-pixel shift of the centre is unavoidable when it happens because the resulting Smart Object/Vector Smart Object must measure an integer number of pixels in height and width and be perfectly aligned to the document pixel grid. That's true in CS5 and CS6.
Say a SO/VSO originally measures 102 x 103 pixels and you scale it by 50%. The Options bar may say the result is 51 x 51.5 px but the result will really be 51 x 52 px, and therefore the new height will really be 50.49% of the old height.
The original SO/VSO is an even number of pixels wide and an odd number of pixels high, therefore its centre will be halfway down a pixel. The 50%-scaled SO/VSO is an odd number of pixels wide and an even number of pixels high, therefore its centre will be halfway across a pixel.

• Smart Objects rendered incorrectly in CS6

Here is a logo, pasted as a smart object from Illustrator into Photoshop CS5.1 :
Here is the same logo pasted as a smart object from Illustrator to Photoshop CS6:
Note the gaps in the orange gradient at the top of the graphic, and the transparent areas in the border of the shield. This discrepancy appears (to me) to be a result of using a "sharper" antialiasing mode in CS6 which is leaving 1 pixel wide gaps between objects that are actually completely aligned to the same points in Illustrator. Scaling the object will result in the gaps showing up in different areas of the graphic. This is incorrect behavior on the part of Photoshop CS6. Will there be a fix forthcoming? I'll have to keep working in Photoshop CS5.1 for the time being until issues like this are resolved.

I think the discussion got sidetracked here on talking about anti-aliasing of "raster" smart objects. THIS IS NOT WHAT THIS COMPLAINT IS ABOUT.
The original complaint, which still stands, is that vector artwork is now rendering with 1 pixel wide gaps between elements that are, in Illustrator, exactly aligned. If you go back and look at my original two examples, the logo in the second screen shot has gaps in the orange banner in the logo, and is missing elements in the border around the shield. These are gaps or holes in the logo caused by a change in the way vector objects are rendered in Photoshop CS6. This can NOT be corrected by changing the antialiasing style - there is no choice of rendering method used. You get the new one, that is broken.
In this particular example, I opened up an old CS5.5 Photoshop file in CS6, and edited it. During that process I resized the logo a little bit, and didn't notice the gaps and lines that now appeared in the logo. I ended up sending out artwork that was affected by this bug. Luckily I did finally notice and in the nick of time was able to fix it by using the .PNG export work-around.
I was going to post a very simple example where I had a grid of filled boxes in Illustrator that were exactly adjacent to each other, which should result in a single larger solid box in Photoshop, but instead results in 1 pixel wide gaps between the elements. You can do this experiment for yourself. The reason I have not posted such an example is that, to my dismay, this example also now exhibits the same thin gaps in Adobe Illustrator CS6. So the rendering of vector images is broken there, as well.
Dragging and dropping elements out of InDesign into Photoshop is also a workflow that I have developed when creating web pages from previously produced print designs. This bug also affects this workflow. Every seperate vector shape in a logo or other compound artwork is now being rendered in such a way that small gaps might appear between elements that should be touching. I imagine that they are being pixel aligned or otherwise sharply antiased so that two shapes that are touching in the vector artwork are now being drawn not-touching. In the original example, if I resize the logo to a different size, the places the gaps happen change - some places that are gapped now touch, others that didn't have gaps now do.
THIS IS A BUG which will affect legacy artwork, and will affect workflows. This has degraded the usability of the Creative Suite as a whole, and should be corrected as soon as possible.

• Smart objects transform&duplicate again

I am on a windows xp system and using the ps cs3 extended 10.0.1 version.
My question is about smart objects and their transformation capabilities.
I have made some tests on 3 objects. I have created a vector object applied basic layer styles(shipped with photoshop) and duplicate it twice. Rasterized duplicated ones. Converted vector original and one of duplicated raster copy to smart object and leave one of the raster copy as normal object. Objects have given the same size information in the info palette. Aligned them vertically using a grid.
I have tried some possibilities i have used ctrl+alt+T command transform and duplicate on one of the smart object. It was not working. So i have tried ctrl+shift+alt+T it was not working properly too.
I have applied ctrl+alt+T to normal raster object to create a reference transformation it was working. But when i apply ctrl+alt+shift+T command to vector and raster smart object. I realized that command transforms duplicated copies completely different than the reference transformation applied to normal object.
is it a bug or a normal behavior .

• How to place raster images as smart objects?

I'm trying to duplicate Photoshop's File:Place menu functionality and I'm experiencing something that I can't figure out. (I've added my code to the end of this message.)
I have a variety of test EPS images that I can run through the File:Place menu. They all appear on the document as "Smart Objects". That is I can then do a bunch of transforms to the image (like rotate, move, deform) before committing to the image to the document.
The important point here is that some images, when opened by Photoshop, first ask that I "Rasterize EPS Format" while others just open up without comment.
While doing these File:Place actions, I've been using the Listener plugin that comes with the SDK to generate code dumps of my actions. From these I've then generated my own code for placing images onto a document. I've had to re-arrange the code a bit to work in Objective-C so there's a good chance that I've done something wrong while translating.
Now if you look at my code you notice a commented out section. If you uncomment those lines then you basically have what I got from the Listener plugin log. But the problem is that this code then doesn't act like the File:Place menu action. It creates a new layer, places the image on the page - but its gone one step too far and the image is no longer a "Smart Object". The image is committed to the layer.
With a bit of experimenting I commented out the line that you can see commented out in my code. However, this does something odd. For all images you can see Photoshop put up a busy icon for a few seconds showing that it is process, but only images that Photoshop wants to "Rasterize EPS Format" actually appear on the page as Smart Objects. Trying to place the images that Photoshop doesn't rasterize results in nothing appearing.
That's my problem. If I uncomment that line in my code then all images that I test with appear on the page - but not as Smart Objects. If I comment out the code then only images that Photoshop wants to rasterize appear - but those that do appear then appear as Smart Objects.
So that's my goal: to place any image onto a document as a Smart Object just like Photoshop's File:Place menu command does. Any ideas where I'm going wrong?

Auto_Desc descriptor;
Auto_Desc offsetDetails;
SPErr error = kSPNoError;
Handle aliasValue = NULL;
FullPathToAlias(cPath, aliasValue);

if (error) break;
// error = sPSActionDescriptor->PutEnumerated(descriptor.get(), keyFreeTransformCenterState, typeQuadCenterState, enumQCSAverage);
// if (error) break;
error = sPSActionDescriptor->PutUnitFloat(offsetDetails.get(), keyHorizontal, unitDistance, 0);

error = sPSActionDescriptor->PutUnitFloat(offsetDetails.get(), keyVertical, unitDistance, 0);

while (false);
if (result != NULL) sPSActionDescriptor->Free(result);
if (aliasValue != NULL) sPSHandle->Dispose(aliasValue);
return error;

If you want to go with Batch I would recommend creating an Action of more or less these steps:
• set the resolution to the same as the background image’s
• change the image from Background Layer to regular Layer if necessary
• convert it to a Smart Object
• add a Drop Shadow Layer Style to the image (do not use Global Angle)
• place the background image (File > Place …)
• move it behind the image layer
• Image > Reveal All
• make Selection from that layer’s transparency (cmd-click its icon in the Layers Panel) and use Image > Crop
• select and transform the image layer to fit the intended position
This would naturally work out best if the images had the same size and proportions.
For the reflection on the floor duplicate the image, flip it vertically, move it in position and reduce its opacity to maybe 10%.
Realistically you may have to hide it partially behind the pillows, a Vector Mask would be an option.

• Enlarged Smart Objects with vectors inside them appear as resized bitmaps

In Photoshop CC for Mac I have...
Created layers of vector art
Combined them into a smart object
Enlarged the smart object (both via "Transform" and "Image Size")
Upon enlarging, the vector objects look the way an enlarged bitmap would (i.e. fuzzy, pixelated, terrible) instead of crisp and clean as a vector should look. I've double- and triple-checked to make sure all layers have remained vector after resizing and they have.
This is a terrible inconvenience for anyone that works heavily with vector smart objects and resizes them. I use this workflow on a daily basis to make adapting interface elements for various screen resolutions easier, without it I am beyond screwed.
If anyone knows a workaround (or if this requires a setting that I haven't found to be changed) please let me know.

you may want to read it from the beginning.
Basically while a smart object layer embedded object may contain  vector graphics.  Photoshop renders a composite for the embedded object and uses the resulting rendered pixels for the smart object layers pixels.  When you transform a smart object layer your transforming those pixels like raster layer using your Photoshop preference interpolation preference..  If you want to resize the vector graphics contained in the embedded object you must open the embedded object into the approbate application and resize the embedded object using vector tools. After you commit the resize. Photoshop will update the embedded object and the layers pixel will be the composite rendered for the updated resized embedded object.

• Smart object does not appear at specified time in slide.

Here's my issue:  When I insert a speech bubble into the slide, set it to appear after 5.0 seconds and the display for the rest of the slide, it does not appear at the specified time. HOWEVER, if I move the speech bubble to appear at the very START of the slide, then it appears. I thought perhaps I needed to add an effect to make it work, so I selected the thought bubble, then added a "fly in" effect and set the time. It still won't appear at a specified time--only if I put it at the start of the slide.
Here's my question: Why won't the smart object (speech bubble) appear at a specified time, but it WILL appear if I set the "appear after" time to 0 seconds? I also have tried moving this on the timeline, and it still only shows at the start of the slide.
Many thanks for any help.

Previewed in browser and in normal preview mode. (Just clicking "preview from this slide).
Normal project -- not responsive.
And..I'm not worried. No need for wine. (Although I've never been known to refuse one if someone offers. )
Screenshots below. As you can see, the image is not set sa a button.
And, yes: I know there is a spelling error in the thought bubble. Just trying to get it to work first.
I think there may be a bug in the system, as I have noticed other weird things. (EG: The time indicators under "timeline" often disappear for no reason. I have to close out and re-lauch Captivate to get it back. (Clicking on "timeline" in Windows dropdown does nothing to correct the issue. Other things I've noticed is that the navigation works fine when I play the whole project through ONCE, but upon a second preview, all settings -- such as "jump to slide __" -- do not stick. When I go back in and re-enter all of the navigation slide commands, the same thing happens when I replay it. My client notices the same thing. Bizarre.)

• Mysterious white outline appearing around smart object

Hi. Actually not sure if this is an Illustrator issue or Photoshop.
In a psd file I have a Smart Object created in Illustrator. It is just some basic shapes that I merged together into one shape with a fill color (#FF28FF), no stroke.
Although there is no stroke, when looking at the Smart Object in Photoshop, there seems to be a very thin white outline around the shape. I've double checked again and can't find any reason for this white outline to exist. I'd like to stress that this white outline is very subtle, yet definitely visible.
I've uploaded a sample of what I'm talking about here:

It's driving me crazy. Can someone please explain to me how to get rid of it, or what is causing this?
Thanks!

Thanks for your reply Mike. My monitor is pretty new. I got it only about two months ago. It's a Dell u2311h. I don't have the hardware to properly calibrate it, so I've been using settings recommended by people on forums (with the same model and revision) who DO have such equipment. I know this not ideal at all and that different units vary from one another inspite of being same make and model.... but this is the best I can do right now.
Out of curiousity, assuming that you are correct, I went into my monitor settings and played around with the rgb. The white outline that I'm seeing did seem to vanish when bringing the Green way down, but the colors were completely wacked at that point.
I did try catching the info with the eye-dropper and it did not detect any white. So I guess it is a calibration issue. If you have any suggestions for solving this issue without calibration hardware, I'd be happy to hear them.
Thanks!

• How do I stop automatic placement of files as a smart object in Photoshop CS4?

I have done numerous searches on the internet to find out how to stop Photoshop from placing files as a smart object. I followed the suggestion of going to Edit > Preferences > General to uncheck the "Place or Drag Raster Images as Smart Obejct" but that option does not appear in Photoshop CS4. Does anyone know how to deal with this issue in CS4?

This may sound strange, but to avoid the "Smart Object" designation, just stop "placing" the files. Either open them, or copy and paste them into Photoshop.
If you're just opening raster files in Photoshop, they come in as pixels - drag a newly opened raster file onto your target Photoshop file. If you're copy/pasting art from Illustrator, you can choose at the time whether it is a "Smart Object," or "Pixels." Sounds like you want pixels.

• Smart Objects - File size issues

Hey All,
The Question: Not sure if this question has been answered elsewhere. But when using a nested smart object (meaning a smart object within a smart object) Photoshop CS5 doesn't display the correct file size (at bottom left) or seem to account for the nested smart object file size.  Is there a "setting" I’m missing to accurately display what the true file size is?
The Problem: Using multiple nested smart objects that I have reduced the size of my image to be 260x200 for web export. Photoshop CS5 won't let me save a file that appears to be only 3mbs claiming it's over 2 gig's. See image below.
Really not sure what to do about this, the company I work for makes lots of changes so using smart objects is necessary for my work flow. But also seems to be slowing me down trying to figure out issues like this and is problematic when it comes to saving all the work I have been doing.
Thanks for the help

One thing you might have missed is that Photoshop is not a file editor its a document editor.   The sizes Photoshop is displaying are related to how much ram it using for the documents data. How efficient ram is being used etc. File sizes vary all over the place sizes depend on the number of pixels in an image format support layers no layers compression?, transparency.   There is no way Photoshop could even guess at any file sizes.
An other is all smart object layer are not created the same and their sizes my be far different the you may think.
Smart object layers have a basic format. There is an embedded object, there is a composite pixel rendering for embedded object that is used for the layer pixels and there is a transform associated for the layer rendered pixels.
Anything Photoshop supports can be an embedded object.  These objects are copies of the original object.  For example a copy of a RAW file where ACR settings are stored in the file copy metadata. An embedded object might be a copy of a PSD file that has thousands of layers. in any case Photoshop renders pixels for the embedded objects composite view and uses these rendered pixels as the smart object layers pixels.  These pixels can not be changed within the document.
However the embed object can be opened and worked on and changed. If the change is committed Photoshop will update the embedded object and render the updated object composit view and replace the layers pixels.
Smart Object Layer Pixels can only be acted on in the document not changed with paint etc. For example the Transform associated with the smart object layer sizes and positions the layer rendering over the canvas. The layer actual size may be larger then, smaller then the canvas size and have a different aspect ratio then the canvas. Example if you place in an image that is larger then the document canvas size one of Adobe Photoshop's Preferences is set by default have Place resize large images to fit within current the documents canvas size. The transform associated with that placed layer would cause the rendering of the layers pixels to fit with in the canvas.
Though an embedded  object may contain thousands of layers the actual object may be much smaller then you think for PSD files are compressed object may be compressed.  Also while the embedded object  may contain vector layers when a smart object layer is transformed the layer is transformed using interpolation like a raster layer for all that is being transformed is the pixels Photoshop rendered for the embedded smart object. The only way to work on the embedded smart object layers it to open the smart object and work on the object itself.j

OS X 10.6.8
Problem: Transform applied to Smart Object cannot be repeated on another target.
"Edit > Transform > Again" fails to transform any target after a Transform is applied to a Smart Object. The following message appears:

When ever I have a problem in CS6 and I have many I always test priot releases like cs2 cs3 cs5.  I nevet nitice before you posted this problem the Photoshop has different favlors of Free Transform and that free transform for CS6 has been modified.  Adobe seems to be introducind new improvement matche with new bugs,
Investgating your bug using CS5 I see the following.  There are two types of free transform one type seems to be for smart Object layers and the other for other layer types.  In CS5 you should see a difference in the Option bar for Free transform.
The option bar for layers other then smart object looklike this:
Transform 9 anchor point icons  X: field Relative icon Y: filed  W: % Constrain icon H: %  Angle ° H: ° V: °
The Option Bar for Smart Object layers look like this:
Transform 9 anchor point icons  X: field Relative icon Y: filed  W: % Constrain icon H: %  Angle ° Check Box Anti Alias (grayed out)
If I use the one for other then smart object layers Transform Again is not gratey out and I can use Transform Again on layers even smart object layers However the anchor point seems to be relative always to the first transformed layer's anchor point
If I use free transform on the smart Object Layer and not have done any transform on a other then smart object layer in this Photoshop session not even in an other document the smart object layer will be tramsformed and Transform again menu item will be grayed out. If any had done a Transform on an layer other then smart object layer even in an other document Transform Again would not be grayed out and could be used on the smart object layer at hand.  The transform would not be the one just done on the smart object layer rather it be the one done to the other then smart object layer.  Seems a bit bazzar to me.  This may be how CS6 is also working.
CS6 also added interpolation method to the other then Smart object layer transform and not the one for smart object layers. To be consuitant Adobe should have also put interpolation into the omart opject transform for Adobe transforms smart opject layer by first rendering the pixels for the smart opject then transforms them like a raster layer.  Adobe did manage to record the interpolation use into an action step.  However I do not know if the made it into Scripting  it did not make it into the photoshop javascript user guide. I will test the scriptlistener plugin to see if it records it for the action manager....

I have now tested the Scriptlistner Plugin it does record the interpolation for transform normal layers. Still the layer resize method in the Photoshop Javascript user guide has not been change for that support. In the past what I have done is scripting was to save the users default interpolation Photoshop prenerenvr changed the preference to what I wanted to use do the layer transform resize then restored the users interpolation preferance.  Adobe broke that in CS6 if the users defalt preference is what Adobe's defalt is "Bicubic Automatic" an internal Photoshop error occurs. Adobe did not add "Bicubic Autoimatic" to scripting when I try to save the preference scriping has the internal error. There is also no way to set the preference back to "Bicubic Automatic.  I'm also transform smart object layers so I would still have to use the save preference, change preference, transform, restore preferance method.  This works if the users preference is set to some preference other the "Bicubic Automatic"

So to me it look like CS5 and CS6 transform work basiclly the same.  There seems to have been some behavior changes made to CS6 I can not seem to put my finger on as well as the addition of the interpolation method in the option bar. I can't put my finger on it so it may be the same in CS5 and CS6.
It may have to do with the bazar behavior of Free Transform  and Transform Again not being available on smart object layers if no free transform to a normal layer has been done in this Photoshop session  but are available if one was done in any doument. And thet you can start to do a transform on the smart object layer and see the Transform handle but then start using transform Again shortcut Ctrl+Shift+T and watch the old transform being done perhaps rotating some virtual anchor point and not around the acnchor point bing displayed in the Transform bounding box and control points.

Over in the Adobe Feedback site several issues were posted with CS6 Transform one was marked "Not a problem" by Adobe. One was marked "Solved" by Adobe and the others have no Adobe markings the may on not be a problem
So I beleive there is a bug but I do not think it originated in CS6 the bazar things I see happing also seem to be in CS5.

I was also having this issue, and I did some more searching and found this answer in the Adobe forums: Re: Photos from Lightroom 5 to Photoshop CC (2014) and back.... The issue appears to be caused by having not updated Lightroom to the latest version prior to having CC2014 installed (wow that's stupid). The trick seems to be to uninstall Photoshop CC2014 and to then reinstall it after having upgraded to Lightroom 5.5.

• Smart Object Bug?

When I edit Smart Objects in CS5.5 they open in their own window; meaning I only see the smart object in my new window when I chose to edit. In CS6 I am seeing the actual document I made the Smart Object from, as well as the Smart Object when I edit the Smart Object, AND it has its own rounded border that when saved out, does not appear - it is taking that from the original for no reason.
Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit only. I did not install 32 bit.

Hi Zeno,
Thanks for the suggestion. Resetting the temp directory to another location is a good workaround. I was having the same problem with another program, CuteFTP, and changing the temp dir fixed its problem too. I had previously tried running in Compatibility mode, Administrator mode and both together but none of those modes helped.
It would still be nice to know why Windows 7 denies access to its own temp directory but at least now, I can get back to work.
Thanks,
David Salahi

• Smart Object and blend mode issue

I have an object that I moved from another image and needed to resize. The object is an image of a bottle and glass, with both the bottle and glass having reflections from their base. They both also have some layer masks with the reflections. I grouped the glass and bottle and created a smat object before the move to the new file). Anyway everything worked fine, except the reflections are much stonger in the new file (they are sitting over the same colored backgrond as in the original. If I open up the smart object and put a background behind the images  and the reflections (background is transparent)everthing looks as they should. The reflections have a blend mode of multiply).
So why does the smart object not render the reflections properly (without lowering the opacity more within the smart object group) they appear almost at 100% in the new file. Any suggestions?
Can't post the files as this happened at work.
Thanks
Jeff
