Raster to vector converstion help

I am running illustrator 10 on a G4 running OS10.39.
I have a tiff file in illustrator that I would like to convert to a vector file.
Does anyone know how Illus. 10 can do this or of a download I can use that will do the conversion.
Thank you in advance
Johanna

VectorMagic is an online service you would be best to do this that way. there is a feature called auto trace in v.10 but not very helpful.

    Hello All,
    When I convert a raster to vector with Live Trace the result is great but I want to reduce the number of points so I get less layers when I import it into Painter. Can anyone advise on how to do this?

    Shame! I would have thought that, at the very least,  you knew that Painter existed! Oh! Woe is the world, woe is the world!!

  • Matching Raster and Vector RGB color in InDesign CS3.

    We print on a Durst Lambda RGB imaging device to photographic paper. All color management is done as an early bind (raster files are converted to the printer's color space and vector colors are chosen from a palette database). So basically the files must go through InDesign without any color change in raster or vector information. We have clients that require specific RGB builds for logo colors the are present in both their raster and vector files.
    Color Management is set to "North American General Purpose 2" with "RGB: Preserve Embedded Profiles" selected.
    1) The file is exported as a PDF 1.4, High Quality, PDF/X_None.
    2) The PDF was ripped on a Cheetah RIP (Jaws level 3) with no color management on.
    3) Solid raster colors such as 0-255-0 will reproduce as 0-255-1.
    4) The color differences between the raster and vector are usually 1-4 points.
    5) The vector is consistent as was input in the programit's only the raster that changes. When you are trying to match raster and vectors logo colors it is a killer.
    However, I can go into the InDesign (or Illustrator) color settings and turn color management off (This is our current workflow). In doing this the RGB working space uses the monitor profile and "color management policies" are set to OFF. With these settings the RGB raster and vector match. The problem with this work flow is two fold:
    1) We have other devices than our RGB Durst Lambda that can use the InDesign color managementVutek flat bed 3200 and grand format 3360.
    2) We have had many occurrences where the custom "color management off" settings have reverted back to the default "North American General Purpose 2"without any intervention.
    I have tried this with different RIP's with the same results.
    Does anyone have an idea to create a simple PDF workflow and keep the color information consistent?
    Program: InDesign CS3 5.0.2
    Platform: Mac OS 10.5.2
    Computer: G5 tower with 4 gigs of RAM

    I believe that setting is an old Illustrator setting that has been saved to effectively turn the color management off. The monitor profile effects the image displayedit doesn't effect the color transform.
    Anyway, the color management I want to use is the "North American General Purpose 2".
    To reiterate:
    The procedure:
    1) The file is exported as a PDF 1.4, High Quality, PDF/X_None.
    2) The PDF was ripped on a Cheetah RIP (Jaws level 3) with no color management on.
    The Problem:
    3) Solid raster colors such as 0-255-0 will reproduce as 0-255-1It changes from the original raster color placed in InDesign.
    4) The color differences between the raster and vector are usually 1-4 points.
    5) The vector is consistent as was input in the programit's only the raster that changes. When you are trying to match raster and vectors logo colors it is a killer.
    To summarize, the color of the raster file will change from the original that was place into the documenteven though nothing was selected in InDesign that would change the color (i.e. profile conversion to an output profile or a transparency effect used). The change is slightbut there.

  • Raster and vector..Photoshop to Illustrator

    I created a logo in Photoshop (it is now a raster image), now need to enlarge it and have it printed on Tshirts and signs.  Can I transfer it to Illustrator making it a Vector file, or does it need to be created in Illustrator to be a Vector file?

    Kristi,
    The difference between raster and vector graphics is far more than just resolution dependence. That's just one aspect. Just as important--even moreso in textile screen printing--is that vector artwork is built from objects. This makes all the difference in the world wihen it comes to practical production needs for "logos" and for screen printing.
    For example: Okay, suppose the raster image of the "logo" is oversampled enough to avoid pixelation (which is actually less of an issue with screen printing) when enlarged to the size needed for the T-shirt. Someone's making a blunderbuss statement like  "you can then color separate it" isn't even beginning to think through the practical requirements of the reproduction process. Yes, you can print color separations from a raster image. But what kind of separations do you get? Assuming a CMYK or RGB raster image, you'll get halftone dots. Halftone dots are inherently problematic in screen printing. Most common screen printing assumes line art and spot color, not contone art separated to halftones.
    There are methods for creating raster artwork in Photoshop which will result in color separations suitable for spot color and screen printing separations, but it's far more involved than just designing in CMYK or RGB and then making some automagic "conversion." It requires just as much forethought and understanding of the process as building it correctly as vector artwork.
    To advise you correctly, one has to know more about the specific situation in question regarding the specific original artwork and the capabilities of the screen printing house re halftones and color separations.
    A similar set of considerations apply to signs (which you also mention.)
    Trust me: If your focus is "logos" destined for screen printing and/or signage, and you intend to make it your standard workflow to create the original artwork in Photoshop and then use Illustrator as some kind of automagic "conversion" utility when you think you need vector graphics--then you are very much barking up the wrong tree, and are creating untold problems for yourself before you even start.

  • Can anyone help me with raster to vector and transparent background?

    In Photoshop CS3 I created a three dimensional logo (beveled, drop shadow, etc.) and want to covert it to an Illustrator vector file (and then to an EPS) with no white background. When I "open" the flattened .psd file (that has no background) in Illustrator it does come in without a background but when I convert it to a vector file via "Live Trace" it adds a white background whether I keep the drop shadow or not. How do I make a vector file and save it as an EPS in order to import it into an inDesign layout without a white background showing up? I followed a couple of videos on YouTube but they were always demonstrated with a flat, one or two color logo. This logo will be used with and without a drop shadow ... can you even vector a drop shadow? Any help or tutorials you can point me to would be greatly appreciated.

    If your intent was to create a vector logo, you should have created it in illustrator not photoshop. That said, if it is a simple logo, live trace can be used, but it can also generate a lot of unwanted vector shapes that normally are not needed. If there is any complexity to your logo use the pen tool to trace instead of live trace. You can then control how the shapes are created.
    But to answer your question if you open the properties panel for live trace you will find a check box for removing the white background.

  • Photoshop Script  Black and White Raster to Vector

    I do not have AI Adobe for I do not want to spend the money and have to learn an other complex Adobe application. I'm no artist either.  However at rimes I wanted  to have AI live trace feature to change black and white line drawing into vector graphics. AI creates EPS files with embedded vectors. And can export the vector to Photoshop.  Though Photoshop opens EPS as raster layers I find that EPS file created from tracing black and white lines and artwork with programs like potrace that use curves to create black vector shapes. That when these are opened in Photoshop as Black layer with transparency. When these layers transparency are loaded as a selection and the selections converted to path. I find the path are extremely good.
    Potrace is a cross platform open source program packages available for many operating systems. Windows (32 bit) and (64 bit), Mac OS X (Intel), Mac OS X (universal),Linux (32 bit) and (64 bit), Linux (Alpha), Linux (Sparc64), Sun Solaris (Sparc), Sun Solaris (i386), Sun Solaris (x86_64), FreeBSD (i386), NetBSD (i386), OpenBSD (i386), AIX and AROS (i386). Potrace is a command line command. So it can be use started with options and passed a file from bat files and scripts. Potrace requires No instillation. All the needed potrace requited files just need to be place into a folder and potrace run from that folder as the current directory.
    So a created a Photoshop script that more or less uses potrace like a Photoshop Plug. The script define a custom shape for the current active document using potrace and add a new shape layer using the new defined custom shape as the top layer. The script also toggle off the other visible layers so you just see the shape layer.  You can use alt click on the shape layer visibility icon to toggle the other layer visibility so you can see how well it matches the document.
    I'm a windows user so the Photoshop script I wrote though in javascript will most likely only run on a windows platform because of my use of windows features its command line start command and file system conventions. I'm quite sure a Mac variant could created. Here is screen capture showing how well the defile shape  matches up and a link to the script. You would need to download potrace to use it and fix the vars in the script that point to potrace. http://www.mouseprints.net/old/dpr/potrace.jsx

    Good day!

  • Enlarging raster vs vector Objects

    as i understand it vector objects should enlarge without losses, while
    raster objects pixilate on enlargement.
    In this image
    http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/6178/triangleswithrastercz0.gif the
    top triangle is raster. The bottom one is vector. Otherwise the two
    are identical. I stretched both about 15 fold using transform. They
    are identical. If you magnify them to 800 times actual size the
    pixilation is the same. So, the raster image enlarged exactly the
    same as the vector image??????

    Somehow I'm not being clear. I understand the difference between
    vector and raster objects/images. My point is, theoretically upsizing
    a vector image should give a different (better/cleaner/smoother )
    result than resizing a raster image. Yet, in my example upsampling
    by a factor of 15 times showed no difference.

  • AI effects: Feather versus gaussian blur? which is raster or vector?

    i`m looking at feathering versus blurring. both in illustrator effect drop down menu.
    from what I I understand the blur/gaussian blur under photoshop effects (in illustrator) will pixelate the edge gradation, but the illustrator effect "feather, will keep it vector, is this correct?
    from sample here they both look the same to me, and I noticed the feather effect was gaussian blurring the edge anyway to produce its result,,
    from what I can see I should be able to make either of these as large as a billboard and they would both still be smooth gradients? or would the gaussian blur result in pixelation unless I had the vector object sized correctly in the document in the first place to suit the billboard.
    what I am trying to ask is how do they work,
    my take is the AI "feather" will allow resizing of the vector object shape to any size and not be pixelated on print output,
    where as the gaussian blur PS effect, you would need to make sure your object is correctly sized on the correct document size to ensure that it prints smoothly.
    any feedback is good,....

    wildbirdsketch,
    actually can I confirm, both produce a raster gradation to soften the edge, so its no longer vector once you apply a blur or feather correct?
    It is, but with raster effects.
    asking because if I create a blur/feather, I will have to consider the resolution  or not as again I`m assuming no because each time I resize the object the effect recalculates itself as necessary to create the right blur and resolution for that size.?
    As long as you keep the Effect>Document Raster Effect Settings the same, the resolution of raster effects will remain the same,
    and when these vector objects print (in general for AI), i`ve never known, do they print as Vector or does the RIP turn them all into raster anyway?
    Indeed.
    just confused on this, I`m guessing their only vector while in illustrator, but once going through the printer it will all be raster  via the RIP if thats correct,
    Indeed.
    its just that vector allows you to scale it to the required output size prior to print and have it print crisply without having to focus on resolution or resampling methods correct?
    Indeed.

  • Raster to vector conversion

    My scanner will only scan in bitmap, grayscale, or color. I would like to scan a line art and wind up with a vector image. I can scan bitmap at 2400 dpi but the file is huge. Is there any way to scan the image and then convert it to vector?

    John,
    Two options:
    1. Use the raster image as the basis for a redraw with the Pen Tool and possibly other tools depending on shape.
    2. Try Autotrace/Live Trace first, and then use the raster image as the basis for a redraw with the Pen Tooland possibly other tools depending on shape.

  • Indesign CS6 very slow with vectors. please Help!

    We updated to CS6 from CS5.5 to a Mac Pro running OS 10.6. Processors are 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon. Ram is 10 GB 800 MHz DDR2. Video card is ATI Radeon HD 2600 256 MB. One Cinema Display and a smaller Samsung monitor.
    The performance of InDesign when handling groups of vector files created inside InDesign is horrible. For example, I took a little 3 x 3px square and created a grid of 60 squares approx. When I select all of them (pure vectors) and try to move them it takes InDesign 10 seconds to respond to the selection first, and then 10 more seconds to move them.
    Another example, I created a very simple graph, pure vector of course, with a moderate number of text and lines and when I select the whole thing the lag comes again, takes a lot to mark the selection and then is very hard to move it.
    We have tweaked InDesign preferences (Interface, File Handling) as much as we could but the issue remains. We didn't have any problems with 5.5.
    Help please!

    had to install mountain lion and now everything works smoothly

  • Vector Shape Help

    I am trying to draw a circle within a circle an have polka dots around it like numbers five and four.  How do I get them to be even?  Do you think this person used a brush?  How do I get the shape in number 6 and 7?  How do get the rectangle shapes in number 8?  Also, when I create a circle and then another circle inisde of it, how do I make sure that they are evenly spaced?  When I print the shapes are way off?  I would appreciate any help I can get to mimick some of these designs.
    Thank You!!!

    I concur with Doug.
    But if you want to do it in Photoshop I recommend using Smart Objects of opposing pairs of elements, duplicating and numerically rotating those by the necessary angle:
    As for circles with the same center: create a vector circle Shape (with the Ellipse Tool), mark it, copy, paste, hit command-T and with alt-shift pressed scale it (or set the »Reference point location« in the Options Bar to center, click »Maintain aspect ratio« and enter a new value for width or height).

  • Serious Vector Casting Help!!

    I have a Vector of Strings. I want to convert this to an array of strings. How do I go about this. Here is some code excerp
    public static String[] getHeader(Vector values, int format)
    Vector headerFields = new Vector();
    for( int i = 0; i < values.size(); i++ )
    headerFields.add(getString(i));
    return (String[]) headerFields.toArray();
    I get a class cast exception.
    Is there anyway to declare a String array and add strings to it whenever you like. Thanks

    OKAY, LAST TIME! in case it's not working
    please consider the code that was posted
    public static String[] getHeader(Vector values, int format)
    Vector headerFields = new Vector();
    for( int i = 0; i < values.size(); i++ )
    headerFields.add(getString(i));
    return (String[]) headerFields.toArray();
    1. In order to call the method "getString(i)" as shown, the method must exist in the same class or inherited from a super class, otherwise you would have to use a class name if it were static or a pointer if it were instance method
    2. In order for it to compile, it has to return an Object reference because that's the required parameter for the add method in the Vector class
    3. You are adding the value returned from this method into a newly created Vector refered to by "headerFields"
    4. The limit you are using for the loop is the size of the Vector refered to by "values"
    5. The only correlation between the Vector refered to by the pointer "headerFields" and the parameter "values" is the size. So you have two Vectors that are of the same length.
    6. In this code, the only way to get an Object out of the Vector values is to do it externally by allowing the "getString(int)" method to access a pointer that has the same value as the parameter "value". If you don't need an Object from the Vector refered to as "values" then you must simply want to use it's size. If so then just pass an "int" to the method.
    7.If you do want to get some information out of the Vector refered to by "values" then you should obtain the reference to one of it's elements as follows.
    values.elementAt(i)
    If you know what this Object is, then you may cast it appropriately and use the pointer to this particular Object to call a method in that Object. such as
    Something x = ((Something)(values.elementAt(i)));
    x.getString();
    8. If the class that contains this method extends Vector, and the class is intended to supply a getString(i) method, then why send the parameter "values" when you could use "this"
    9. If the class does not extend Vector but "has a" Vector, then you should hold a pointer or an array of pointers (for however many dimensions you need) in an instance field, then you wouldn't necessarily need to pass the "values" parameter.
    10. If the class has niether a "is a" or "has a" relationship to Vector, then certainly this is the wrong approach. You might want to do something with those objects in the Vector refered to by "values". then again you need to access them by
    values.elementAt(i)
    11. If you don't want to use the values in the Vector refered to by the "values" parameter and you want to use some method to get a header for each Object in the "values" Vector, then just send the size to the method.
    12. if you want to convert a Vector of strings then you don't need to create a new Vector in the method, just pass a Vector as a parameter to the method.
