Rasterization of complex postscript-file crashes in 64-bit Photoshop CS5

Rasterization of complex PS-file crashes in 64-bit Photoshop CS5
I have a variety of complex postscript files that were created in Adobe InDesign CS3 and CS5 through "print to postscript file". I try to rasterize these files in Photoshop CS5 (64 bit on Macintosh) and it crashes Photoshop even before the dialog box comes where one has to specify the dpi for rasterizing. If I use Photoshop CS3 or Photoshop CS5 with 32 Bit opening, it does not crash; and in this case I can rasterize a 100cm x 160cm format with 300 dpi.
If I reduce the complexity to near triviality it works with the 64 bit version.
A major reason why I bought CS5 was because I thought that with the 64 bit version I can handle rasterization of large files better: there are a few minor artifacts created by rasterization in Photoshop 32 bit version which are presumably due to some memory problems; I thought the 64 bit version can solve it. But now it turns out that the 64 bit version cannot handle complex files at all.
If I use Distiller to convert the postscript-File into a pdf file, then the 64-bit version does the rasterization, but there are some reasons why I prefer the rasterization directly from the postscript file.
Is that a bug of the 64 version?
V.S.

I did a lot of testing in the meantime since we have often the task to printout large charts with complex content on plotters of medium size printing companies who need tiffs since they cannot handle pdfs with complex contents.
It turns out that for large charts with complex content the method to export from Indesign to pdf with PDF/X-1a profile and subsequent rasterization in photoshop to create the tiffs sometimes produces a few minor artifacts; mainly very thin white lines that you see in the printout. Also it is not good if your file contains graphics for which PDF/X-1a profile sometimes does not yield the desired high quality. (In addition the pdf file has a lot of display artifacts visible on screen but not manifesting in the rasterized photoshop file.)
The use of the "High Quality Print" profile (instead of PDF/X-1a profile) makes it worse since sometimes semi-transparent objects are printed as 100 percent solid. The solution in this case is to change the Acrobat 5 compatibility of the "High Quality Print" profile to Acrobat 4 compatibility, this solves the semi-transparent problem, I don't understand why, but it does.
On Macintosh one can print to pdf (instead of export to pdf), this solves all problems with artifacts as far as I can judge; however  "print to pdf" has PDF/X-1a profile and I don't see any direct way how to change it to "High Quality Print" profile. Presumably I would have to locate somewhere in the Library > Adobe Application Support > Adobe (on Mac) the presets for "print to pdf" and change it if possible.
The easiest way on Macintosh that gives no artifacts is for large charts with complex content to "print to postscript" (with Adobe PDF 9.0 PPD), then use distiller with any suitable profile, like "PDF/X-1a-2001" profile or "High Quality Print" profile, to produce a pdf. This pdf looks fine on screen and simultaneously when rasterized with Photoshop (for example the 64 bit version of CS5) gives you a good photoshop file.
You may be right that the workflow
Indesign > print to postscript > pdf via distiller > rasterize to photoshop file
is outdated for simple and medium complex projects, but for those really complex large charts this is the only viable way to my knowledge; I also know that some of my colleagues use this sometimes for complex projects when export to pdf creates artifacts.

See for yourself which version of ACR is needed for that camera’s RAW files
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
then check your version (Photoshop > About Plug-In > Camera Raw).
Your version of Photoshop does not support that version of ACR.
You could use the free DNG Converter.

  • I downloaded both files and when I try to open I get this,The file archive part of adobe photoshop cs5 is missing.

I can't open either file, first one keeps asking me what to open with and the second one says, the file archive part of adobe photoshop cs5 is missing.  what am I doing wrong?  I have a serial number

It sounds like your downloaded archive file the big is eithe corrupt or not where it should be.  That file is a 7Zip file which can be extracted with 7zip.  If the downloaded file is bad delete it and download it again Download CS5 products

  • How can I diagnose an intermittent crash when saving in Photoshop CS5 in Windows 7 (64bit)?

    Hello,
I have been experiencing an intermittent crash of Photoshop CS5 in Windows 7 when saving. I cannot effectively reproduce the problem and am having difficulty diagnosing the cause of the it. I have updated Photoshop to 12.0.4.0 and still experience the crash. Can someone offer advice as to how to resolve this issue? It is troublesome since I lose all my work without any means of recovery when it happens.
    Hardware:
    AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4GHz

    Hunt,
Thanks for the advice. Here is what I have done so far which has not alleviated the crashes while saving:
Only run the application as administrator
    Clear the preferences file
Disabled virus checking on files I am using
Disabled virus checking on file writes (just in case the above was not enough)

  • Wind.8bf file missing from trial version photoshop cs5?

I am trying to learn a specific text effect and the tutorial uses the "wind" filter in photoshop.  I am currently using a trial version of PS cs5, and have been able to use all features so far...  has the wind filter been ommitted from the trial version?  Also, I downloaded an older version of the Wind.8bf file and located it within the correct /plugin/filters/ folder, but PS still does not recognize it.
    Does anyone have a suggestion?
    thanks,
    Neil

Did you look in Filter - Stylize - Wind?
It only works on pixel-based layers.  Is the tutorial based on an older version of Photoshop, or have they done something to the text to rasterize it into pixels?
If I recall correctly, the Wind filter is provided in Photoshop CS5 as part of a single plug-in file that provides a whole bunch of filters.  I believe they did this to help speed up the startup, as Photoshop doesn't have to enumerate so many plug-ins this way.
Generally speaking, you should not put the separate 8bf file from another version of Photoshop into the folder tree for the current version, and in fact this can break things.  Remember to remove the file you put in place.

  • Cannot open file or create image in Photoshop CS5 (12.0.4 x64)

Photoshop starts as normal. When I do File>Open or File>New nothing happens. See demo here http://www.screenr.com/LUkH
I've searched the webs and see many cases of what sounds like a similar issue, but I cannot get any of the suggested fixes to work for me.

    What I've tried so far:
I've uninstalled, deleted all AppData and ProgramFiles folders, installed, updated. Still no luck. Version 12.0.4 x64.
    I've removed all printers.
I've done the preferences reset trick by holding down CTRL+ALT+SHIFT when launching Photoshop.
I've done the super weird ESC and CTRL+SHIFT+S described in the last link above (sounds like nonsense!).
Photoshop was working fine on this same computer earlier, but one day decided to stop working.
Can't even access the Adobe Chat support for CS5 even though I paid them a lot for this currently 100% useless software.
    I'm running Windows 7 X64, fully updated.
    Photoshop CS5 (12.0.4 x64). Freshly installed.

Transcript from unhelpful Adobe Support, CS5 is no longer supported. Basically this turned into a hopless a rant on my part...
Tazkir: Hello. Welcome to Adobe Technical Support.
    Tazkir: Hi magnus.
Magnus Olstad Hansen: Hi. My Photoshop is no longer able to open images or create new images. I've tried everything I can imagine would help at this point, and I really need some advice. I've also asked the community here (http://forums.adobe.com/message/5720427#5720427). Please advice what I can do to be able to use the product I've bought from you?
Tazkir: Please allow me a moment while I look into your account & verify the details.
Tazkir: Could you please provide me the email address registered with Adobe?
    Magnus Olstad Hansen: (email)
Tazkir: Thank you for the email address.
Tazkir: Just to confirm you were able to open Photoshop before.
Magnus Olstad Hansen: That is correct. It's been working before, on the same computer.
Tazkir: I am sorry to inform you that I could have really helped you . But this issue is not under our support area. I am sorry to inform you that the concerned team will be available after .I request you to please contact us back via same live chat after .so that your issue will be handled and resolved by the concerned team.
Tazkir: Is there anything else I can help you with?
Magnus Olstad Hansen: after ... when?
    Tazkir: During week days.
Magnus Olstad Hansen: Ok. I've made so many failed attempts at getting help with this issue, could you please leave a note for the relevant support team and have them contact me at (email) ?
Magnus Olstad Hansen: It would be easier for everyone, I imagine.
Magnus Olstad Hansen: Or even if they just reply to the forum post.
Tazkir: I am sorry I checked and see that you have Cs5, We don't support CS5 anymore. Please visit the forum.
Magnus Olstad Hansen: I will never buy software from Adobe again.
Magnus Olstad Hansen: I already linked you to a forum post, noone can help me there.
Magnus Olstad Hansen: And Adobe does not care.
Tazkir: I am sorry for the inconvenience caused to you.
Magnus Olstad Hansen: Yes. 2 years is not an acceptable lifetime for purchased software.
Magnus Olstad Hansen: I will be forced to replace my legally purchased version with a pirated one, support and help is better for that software than the legal one.
Tazkir: Is there anything else I can help you with?
Magnus Olstad Hansen: Well, no, I only have this problem.
Tazkir: Thank you for contacting Adobe. Good Bye.

  • CR2 Files Won't Open In Photoshop CS5 - Camera RAW Updates Won't Install...

I've had to take some photo editing work home from the office and I need to open some CR2 (RAW) files on Photoshop CS5. When I drag the files into the program I get a notice that my Camera RAW does not support the files.
I've tried downloading updates for Camera RAW, all the way back to 6.3 (I'm currently using 6.0), but when I go to install I keep getting the message "Some Updates Failed to Install" "Update is Not Applicapable".
The photos were shot on a Canon 5D Mark II, not that it should make much of a difference. I'm wondering what's going wrong? I'm running OS 10.5.8 at home and I'm wondering if that has something to do with it. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

If you have CS2 the latest version should be ACR 3.7.
ACR 4.x is only for CS3. If you download the 3.7 ACR and install it correctly ( be sure to follow the instructions precisely!) you should be OK.

  • I can open RAW files from my camera in photoshop cs5, but they dont save properly after editing

I can open RAW files from my camera in photoshop, but then after I have edited, i save as .raw, and open up the newly saved file and it just comes up as a grey messed up picture.  What am I doing wrong?

    r_r_a_a wrote:
I thought that it was preferrable to do editing on RAW files rather than TIFF for highest image quality.
Yes, it is preferable to do as much editing on the raw files as you can including global and local tone & color correction in Camera Raw...but there is a limit to the work you can do and sometimes you must go ahead and render the raw file into Photoshop for additional work. Then you'll be needing layers and other functionality that can't be done on a raw file. At that point you'll need to save as a TIFF or PSD. If you work in 16 bit and a large enough color space, the TIFF or PSDs will still be capable of the highest quality...as others have indicated, the Photoshop .raw file format ain't for photography per se.

  • HUGE file sizes when editing with Photoshop CS5

Reluctantly I've set Photoshop CS5 up to process photographs for things like barrel distortion that my 18-200 Nikon seems especially prone to.
I open any given photograph with apple-shift-O, make my changes and save. However, the copy that's then put back into Aperture 3 the file size comes out as anything between 30mb and 70mb per photograph - far too big.
I've tried both TIFF 16-bit) and PNG (16-bit) options in Aperture which makes no difference. I've had a look through Photoshop CS5 options but can't see anything which looks correct.
    Thanks

    mjw_london wrote:
I can only assume that it's like this because Aperture 3 only basically allows 2 options, to open in an external editor with either TIFF or PSD - both of which are undesirable because of their huge filesizes. Is there a way of making it open in an external editor with JPEG?
Like jade said, it is not ridiculous. Ideally you would be shooting RAW not (lossy) JPEG to start, but even if you do shoot lossy JPEG you should convert to a lossless format like TIFF or PSD for the entire process of any editing. Large file sizes are a good thing not a bad thing because larger sizes represent more image data. And, hard drive capacity is cheap.
Note that JPEG is a lossy compression algorithm, so when you open a JPEG in Aperture, Photoshop, whatever, the file is decompressed and becomes larger. You can again compress the file (such as back to JPEG) when done editing but be aware that each new compression by a lossy algorithm like JPEG loses image data and may also add undesirable visible artifacts.

  • How to view .MOS files in Adobe Bridge and Photoshop CS5?

I recently shot with a large format camera and used Capture One to tether during my shoot. I went home to look through my pictures and noticed that the files are .MOS files and they don't open in Bridge or Photoshop. How can I fix this?

  • Cannot open CR2 files from Canon T4i with Photoshop CS5

    Please help

    tienstran,
Don't hold your breath.  You will NEVER be able to  open raw files from a Digital Rebel T4i EOS 650D EOS Kiss X4i directly in CS5.
There wil not be any further updates for CS5, ever.  The last version of ACR that will ever run with CS5 is ACR 6.7.1, and you are correct that you need at least ACR 7.1 (or higher) to open your files.
On the other hand, you are wrong about support for your camera in the free Adobe DNG Converter.  All versions of the Adobe DNG Converter form 7.1 and up—including the Adobe DNG Converter 8.1—do support your camera model.
Once a version of either ACR or the Adobe DNG Converter supports a given camera model, all subsequent versions will continue to support it.
So, go and download the Adobe DNG Converter 8.1 and convert your raw Canon files to raw DNG files that you can now open in any version of ACR that will run with CS5.
Remember:  the Adobe DNG Converter works on folders containing your raw files, it does not see the individual files in the folder.  You must point the Adobe DNG Converter to the folder itself, not the files.

Now what? There seems to be a few items in the App folder, but they act only as orphaned aliases. Just start over? Also..., the very nice sales lady said it was not necessary to de-install CS3. There seems to be Adobe stuff all over my HD. Do I need to de-install?

You do not have to de-install CS3. You can start the CS5  install again. You can remove the old vestiges of the CS5 install or remove them. If you are fearfull you can run the CS Cleanscript to remove all vestiges of all versions, but it should be unnecessary.
