Rasterizing contents of a clipping mask

Is it possible to rasterize the contents of a clipping mask so that after applying the clipping mask, you can move the object and its contents around as if it were simply filled with a pattern?
For example, say I have a satellite photo and I make a clipping mask to crop around where my house is. Is it possible to take that small cropped image of my house (maybe with a circular clipping mask) and put it on its own layer?
Thanks!

Landdogger,
A photo is raster.
If you:
1. Create a mask in the form of a circle,
2. Select both and Object>Clipping Mask>Make,
3. Change Transparency from Normal to something else,
4. Object>Flatten Transparency,
you wil get what appears to be a circular image without the parts that are masked out, except for transparent parts to fill the corresponding square; and you can move it as desired.

  • Plea from technical artist: CS5 clipping mask content selection as a preference...

I just have to weigh in on this.
I've been trying to adjust to CS5, from CS3, since November. It's now March.
My job involves taking apart and editing complex art created by other people... who have all different ways of working.  The inability to see what a clipping mask contains when I click on it, AND the inability to edit the contents unless I first locate the perimeter of the mask and/or switch tools, has me working "blind". It's become a real battle to figure out how the previous artist set things up.
I've found workaround methods, but they're just that. I seem to be doing a lot more clicking, double clicking and tool switching, all of which are that much harder on hands that do this for 10 hours a day.
I need to be able to click on an element and know if it is part of a mask, what other additional elements that mask contains, whether the perimeter of the mask is aligned correctly, etc.
PLEASE make it a preference setting to handle masks and mask content selection the old way.  When I'm building new art, I'll be happy to work the CS5 way.  When I'm trying to figure out what someone else has done... please don't make me work harder than I already do...
    Thanks.

    Larry (et al),
[Please be assured...I've invested HOURS trying to get this clipping mask to work before requesting help on this forum.]
The exact same image as per my prior post appears when the file is saved:
Illustrator --> Save As --> PDF
Illustrator --> Export --> JPEG (with and without Artboards)
Illustrator --> Export --> PNG(with and without Artboards)EXCEPT: One PNG trial with "Transparency" selected (turned ON) did not have a white background but did have the unwanted 90-degree corners.
Illustrator --> Save for Web --> PNG
Illustrator --> Save for Web --> JPEG
And a few other trials whose details I omitted to record.
After ~dozen trials...with many permutations & combinations of Adobe Illustrator's parameters...all I can generate is the image in my prior post--with the unwanted 90-degree corners.
Let me fully acknowledge, no doubt I'm doing something wrong...yet I just can't figure out what.
@Larry: Would you please clarify the reference to the Avery labels? Regrets, I looked at the site you provided...yet don't understand how it relates to clipping masks.
    Here's hoping someone can throw a life-line.
    Many thanks to everyone,

  • Photoshop elements 6 help with making a clipping mask

I have a button template (for a pinback) I put into elements. What I would like to do is make a country flag button. Right now the flag image is sitting ontop of the template. I would like to make a clipping mask (I think that's what's it's called) so that the image covers the entire part of the button that will be seen when it is printed. Here is a link to a button. This is what I am trying to do, but am not having any luck. I would a appreciate a step by step guide. I am using photoshop elements 6 on a mac OSX (ver. 10.5.8
    any help would be great

  • Trouble with Clipping Masks

    Hello!
I created a pattern in illustrator, and then I created an object, and I wanted to fill half of the object with the pattern, so I used a clipping mask to do this.. however, now when i try to group everything together, the clipping mask in released and the pattern spills all over the artbaord... when i try to copy and paste into a new document, everything is pasted as white instead. When i try to merge the layers, the clipping mask is released...
I'm not sure how to fix this and have been searching for a solution for it. I hope you can help me figure out how to keep the clipping mask from releasing..
Also, I tried rasterizing but that doesnt work either and it makes my shapes all rough and choppy!
    Thank you

Thanks for replying but unfortunately that did not help!
I always select with the solid selection tool ^^ infact when i want to select everything i just use command+a.
Anyway, I'm still unable to group or copy the entire picture without the clipping mask releasing..

  • Clipping mask, object too complex, can't use bitmap either

    Hi all,
I'm in Illustrator CS4 trying to make a page that has content that I want to embed within a rounded rectangle.  Sounds easy enough.
I've been successful sticking some content into a rounded rectangle, until now.  Now I have a page that apparently is "too complex".  It has lots of transparencies and gradients and such.  Once I try to do the clipping mask thing I am told it's very complex and may not print or work right.  I go ahead anyway and it just looks blank/invisible.
Then I thought artboards might be a way to do this, but I couldn't see how you could make an artboard that is a shape other than a rectangle (I'd like a rounded rectangle).
So then I thought if export the image to a bitmap and then repaste it in, maybe I could embed the bitmap into the rounded rectangle.  Pain in the butt, but I'm looking for any solution.  But that doesn't even work because it says the top selected object must be "a path, a compound shape, a text object, or a group of those".  So a bitmap can't be used
Has anyone had more luck with this?  In CorelDraw I've always just placed objects, no matter how complex, into a "container" without any issues.  Certainly there's a way to do the same here.  This drawing isn't *that* complex.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Check your flattener settings in the prefs, specific flattening options of your object groups and also the raster effects resolution for your document. Reduccing their dpi should make working possible.

  • Clipping Mask with photo question

Hi everyone!  I'm having issues trying to create a clipping mask over a photo.  I have consulted 2 books and several other sites to no avail.  Here's the breakdown:
I have a compound path shape layered on top of a rasterized photo.
I select both, choose Object, Clipping Mask, Make and both objects become clear.
(I've tried variations and the closest I came was when, after the Clip Mask, Make commands, I made the shape white.  The image shows through but now there's a white fill surrounding the shape. It's still not what I want.)
I'm close and appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks. I made the object a compound path before I started but no dice.
This image is the closest I've gotten to what I want but obviously it's wrong.  (this was after several failed attempts, I simply made the mask shape white.)

  • Trouble making a clipping mask in Photoshop

I have the following set up:
I would like to make a clipping mask out of all of the objects above the "Text" layer (so that all of the stuff from the above layers is only applied to the letters), however I am struggling. For one, when I go to ungroup "Group 1" it changes the complexion of the graphics and makes it darker for some reason. Also, when I merge the layers above "text" I get the following:
Anyone know how to accomplish this?

    NM, I found the answer:
Place all the layers above "Text" into a group (it's okay to nest groups).
Ctl/Cmd-click on the Layers Panel thumbnail of "Text" to load it as a selection.
With your new "master group" targeted, click the "New Layer Mask" icon in the Layers Panel.
This will create a layer mask on the group that applies the group content only to the non-transparent pixel on the Text layer, which I think is what you're trying to do.

  • Clipping mask with white brush won't work

Hi, im using photoshop cs6 on a mac and when I do a clipping mask and click and try to use a white brush to show more of the mask it doesn't work, however when I use the black brush it does work

Clipping masks are a little different from, say, vector masks. They simply take into account the content in the base layer they're clipped to, whether they're black, white or any other color.
To reveal with white, you'd have to insert a vector mask on the base layer and work from there.
ON EDIT: This assumes you have more content in the base layer to work with, so scratch that. You're probably better off just using a vector mask and concealing/revealing that way.

  • Why does my layer freeze after putting it in a clipping mask?

I have a new retina-display iMac, and my version of Photoshop (Creative Cloud) is up-to-date.
Whenever I drag an image from my browser over to my open Photoshop file and place it, it's fine. But when I then try to move that layer into an existing clipping mask, suddenly the layer freezes. I can see it, and I can see the transform controls, and it is being masked, but I can't move it, or use the transform controls to re-size it. It's like this new image layer is completely frozen.
I have to save the Photoshop file, close it, re-open it, then everything works as normal and I can adjust the new image and move it around. Happens every time. Please help!
My computer is brand new and I just freshly installed Photoshop, I shouldn't be having to deal with any weirdness already!'
    Thanks

  • Help with clipping masks, please?

I am running cs4, I have a picture of a hand holding a piece of paper, I want to put text behind the thumb and the forefinger.  I'm thinking clipping mask, but I can't seem to get it to work right.  Please help?

Youv'e got your clipping mask reversed. You want to draw paths around the areas you want to keep where the text is concerned. What you currently have would allow you to mask content in the fingers themselves, not outside of them. And you want the clipping mask to be placed on the text, not on the hand image.
Basically you want a path which matches the outline of the card (going around those fingers) then place the text inside that clipping mask.
Red path is the clipping mask....

  • Working with clipping masks

I am unsure if this is a question regarding Photoshop or Illustrator but can anyone offer guidelines on how this image was created for the text to be behind part of an image but not all? Example image attached.

Gmez, you made a B&W layer on top, clipped to your text.  So the B&W only shows up where the text is.  I think it actually looks good, but it's not what you were intending to do.  There are a couple of ways to do it.  An easy way is to just rasterize your text layer, then put a mask on it (not a clipping mask) and paint out what you don't want.  But this method is destructive, so if you want to change the type later you're SOL.  For this, considering that you want the background desaturated anyway, I would just duplicate the base layer, put it on top, put a layer mask on it, and paint out the background so the text pops through where you want.  It involves a little more masking, but if you do it that way then you can just put a desaturation layer below it, and now your foreground will be fully saturated and cover the text, while the background is desaturated.
Edit - scratch that, I guess you can put a layer mask on a text layer without rasterizing it.  Learn something new every day.  Just do that, paint out (with black) whatever you don't want on the text layer mask.
As to the desaturation.  Try using an adjustment layer instead.  It's non-destructive (you can reverse or alter it later) and takes less space in your final file (good practice for later when things get more complicated).  Click on the bottom layer, then add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, and move the saturation down.  Now on the mask on that layer, paint the foreground black to bring back the color.  There are better ways to get black and white (that give you more control over your contrast and 'colors'), but hue/saturation is a good first step.
Edit:  That magazine cover is hysterical.

  • Resizing objects with a clipping mask around them?

How do I resize an object (or group of objects) with a clipping mask around it? While normally I could just enter the dimensions into the Transform boxes for width/height, what that does is resize the outermost area(the clipping mask area) to those dimensions. But what I want to resize is the visible object within the clipping mask-- how do I do this quickly?
It's for a set of objects I'll have to resize frequently...

Nope... it scales the clipping mask itself.
The objects I'm trying to scale are buttons, I've got the various elements (shadows/highlights, etc) in a group, and that group includes the clipping mask. I select the whole group, click the clipping mask, select edit contents, and the button remains unchanged while the clipping mask gets scaled.
(The clipping mask is there as a workaround to create an innershadow effect, since PS has one and Illustrator doesn't.)

  • Clipping mask capabilities for groups

A colleague pointed this out and while there are work-arounds (at least for pixel-content layers) I have to agree with him that Clipping Mask-capabilities for Layer Groups (both as clippee and as clipped – or whatever one should call it) might occasionally make for improved convenience.
Anybody else have an opinion on this?

Yes, and for multiply masked Adjustment Layers one can put them with the pixel Layers into Groups with a Blend Mode other than Pass Through.
So one can certainly work without the feature, but for some combinations of Pixel- and Adjustment Layers it might be convenient.

  • Draw inside, clipping masks & Live paint

I made a drawing of a stone floor excavation and I used 'draw inside' to delimit the excavation borders as below:
and this is what it looks like with edit contents selected:
Sadly, I also wanted to carry on drawing in 'Live paint' mode to 'colour in' sections (the above is just a small section of a much larger drawing), but because 'draw inside' creates a clipping mask, this object is now incompatible with the 'Live paint' paradigm! So I thought I would 'expand appearance' to continue and this is what I get:
What's that about? Whatever it is, it's not very useful!
My question is, is there a way for me to successfully translate a 'draw inside' object to a 'Live paint group'? The above objects are just simple shapes with a single fill & stroke.
    Thanks

Ahh, you're a gem Monika, thank you very much! I only had to modify your answer a little to achieve my desired result, and that was to (after releasing clipping mask) copy and paste in front (because I still needed a version of the boundary as part of the Live paint group).
    Thanks again
    Les
