Rastor image overprinting on white

I am working on a project where I'm placing a rastor image on a clear stock, with a white ink back-up of just the image.
The image is on the same layer as the vector shape filled with white. The image is in front of the white vector shape.
When I select the rastor image and go to the attributes pallet, it does not allow me to select Overprint Fill. So, when I output it, the image has no white back-up. It is just transparent.
I'm working in AI CS5 on a Mac. I have tried the rastor image (placed into AI) as a CMYK Photoshop document and as a CMYK EPS with clipping paths generated in Photoshop.
Is there a way to set the rastor image so that it will overprint onto the white vector shape? This is not a problem when I select two vector shapes, and have one overprint onto the other.

The issue may be the white. What kind of device are you outputting to? Are you using a RIP station?
Typically, white in CMYK is interpreted as having no ink.
Also, are you certain your printing devices has white capabilities?

Or you could select the embedded image, and open the Window>Document Info panel. Select Embedded Images from the fly out menu on the Document Info panel. This should give you the color mode and more info on the embedded file in question.

Your description of the problem is not quite clear so I made certain assumptions. I hope I am rigtht. I believe you have a color patch such as this:
that you would like to place in an image area that has modeling in its white background. You do not want to lay in a flat color but rather to add a color and not lose the modeling or other background tone. The problem is, after making the selection, if you use Edit > Fill and set the Blending mode to Color, the white background remains white. The only colored background area may be an object's shadow or some similar area that is not pure white. (Image 2) It is an unsatisfactory result.
If that is an accurate description of the problem, consider this:
Image 1: The original image
Image 2: Edit > Fill with the Blending mode set to Color. White remains white
Image 3: Mode changed to Lab Color. Edit > Fill with the Blending Mode set to Color. Then return to RGB.
(I would not normally use this green as a replacement color but since it is a Tiffany clock, I chose a light version of Tiffany's trademark color.)

Are you referring the the multiple thumbnails in ACR side bar? I don't use LR but I do use Photoshop and as far as I know Photoshop has no sidebar with image thumbnails.

How to make a Text/image without a white background?

I have an image that I would like to eliminate the white background to use in Dreamweaver CS4 I also found a funky text I would like to use without a white background as well and turn the text into an image. ANy help greatly appreciated. I trie dnumerous ways in Photoshop but I think it can be done in Illustrator. Thanks

If you have a raster image with some white, you may remove it in Photoshop, or maybe in one of the latest versions of Illy.
When you create vector artwork in Illy, there is no background, so just choose a raster format with transparency such as PNG or GIF. Remember to tick Transparency, choose a Matte colour, and to tick Anti-Aliasing in the Image Size window when you Save for Web (etc).

How did you change it? Did you make your B&W on a separate layer? If so, just erase the part of the layer you don't want, or add a layer mask and paint with black over the parts you want to hide.
If not, then you can copy/paste the original photo (you will need to press ctrl+A/cmd+A to select all before you can copy) into the new image. From there it depends on the relative proportions of B&W. Arrange the two layers so the one with the most area that you want to keep is on top, and either mask out the rest or just erase it away.
For future reference, an easier way to do this when starting from scratch is to use the smart brush. Choose a black and white conversion style, turn on the inverse checkbox and paint over the part you want in color. The rest of the photo turns black and white, leaving what you paint over in the original colors.

Spotting low dpi images, overprint, pantones etc..

I'm designing a flyer in Illustrator, wich I exported to PDF using flyer.be his printoptions.
When I upload the file to their server which has an auto checking service I'm told that some black text isn't in overprint, which might result into white lines, that some images are lower that 300dpi and that some spot colors are present.
Is there an easy way to find out what image, text etc is causing this problem?
I'm basicaly looking for a proofing tool which shows me the areas that might cause problems instead of clicking on everything hoping to spot it...

The issue with that white space is explained by the use of relative positioning of your menu. Remember that relative positioning visually allows you to move an element, but that its "shadow" or "foot print" is retained in the document flow. So it still takes up space where it originally flowed in your content, and this causes the header image to position itself the way it does. Turn off the relative positioning of the menu to see what I mean. A simple solution is to set the #header to relative positioning, and then apply absolute positioning to the menu.
There are other issues with your code. Much of it can be simplified, and you should really stop using ID selectors from this point on, and predominantly use classes instead. The use of ID selectors ought to be limited as much as you can - they force you to write bloated convoluted code.
Try to write DryCSS (Don't Repeat Yourself).

How can I turn an image black and white?

I want to edit an image I have inserted into a pages document. I can't see a way to easily change the colouring of the photo to black and white. Using the bars seems to make the colouring look a little odd. Any suggestions?

In Pages v5.2.2, the quickest way to transform a photo to b/w is to select the photo, and on the right panel's Image tab — completely desaturate the image. Tweak the Exposure for tonality adjustments.

Convert color images to black&white bitmaps

Hi,
I have black&white scans of public domain books (image format). I use an OCR software to convert them to indexable PDFs (image+text format). However, the OCRed PDFs are insanely big: a 27 MB scanned PDF leads to an indexable PDF of 728 MB! And unfortunately, my OCR software doesn't have output settings, so I have to find a way to compress the files using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro.
Using Advanced Options > Optimization does reduce the file size, but not significantly. The problem seems to be that my OCR software converts the black&white scans to color images, and encodes them as such inside the PDF. So I need a way to set the image modes back to black&white. I tried using the Advanced Options > Preflight dialog, and selecting "Convert to black&white". However, the resulting PDFs stay about the same size! It seems that "Convert to black&white" converts the images to grayscale, instead of to bitmap.
Any help would be appreciated!

I mentioned "bitmaps", because when I open the original PDF and right-click a random page and select "Modify image..." and open the image in Photoshop, the mode is set to "Bitmap mode": meaning 1-bit mode, containing either black or white pixels. However, when I do "Modify image..." for the OCRed PDF, the mode is set to "RGB Color Mode". I think this explains, in part, the huge size of the OCRed PDF.
Maybe this table will make it more clear:
Original PDF (Bitmap Mode, 132 dpi)
Size: 27 MB
OCRed PDF (RGB Color Mode, 300 dpi)
Size: 728 MB
Now, from the table above, it's clear that I have to reduce the image resolution. So, using the Acrobat's PDF optimizer, I tried the following settings:
Optimized OCRed PDF: Try 1 (Downsample to 132 dpi, JPEG compression)
Size: 733 MB
Optimized OCRed PDF: Try 2 (Downsample to 132 dpi, ZIP compression)
Size: 449 MB
But 449 MB is still huge for a single book. And I don't want to reduce the resolution under 132 dpi, because I will loose quality. Clearly, if the original document is just 27 MB, I should be able to squeeze the OCRed document too. But I don't know how.

Cyan overprint in white border around pix

Using Epson 1900 and CS5---
Using Colormunkie created paper profile for Epson paper - using any paper surface and problem exists..
It is printing a light cyan overprint on the white borders around the pictures. There is no cyan overprint in the picture itself.
When I use any Espon paper profile for the 1900 - it does not occur. Nor does it occur in CS3.
Any ideas? Show Paper White and Match Colors boxes either checked or unchecked in the Printer dialog box does not make a difference.

Thanks Chris- yes you are right the other profiles are version 2.0. I will contact X-Rite tomorrow and see if their units can produce icc profiles in the 2.0 version. Although I doubt it. Curious, though why problem did not exhibit itself in CS3.

Import an image to black&white into array

Hello there.
I'm making a type of cutter, that cuts stamps out of potatos. Currently, the pattern is an array of booleans of 25x25, where you have to click what you want to see and then the program cuts it out. We'd like to add more functionality though, perhaps by allowing images to be imported and these should then get put in the array, according to black/white-scale.
I have absolutly no idea how I'd start doing anything like this.

Hi,
You should use the File Dialog VI. Provide it with a promt name (appears in the windows bar). pattern label (image type name), file patern (extention like *.bmp or *.jpg) and a start path (folder you would like to start in). You will now get a popup which starts in the folder you provided and limits to the extention you provided. Se VI attached (LV 2011) for an example.
What falkpl ment with VDM is Vision Development Module. This is an addon which you can install onto LabVIEW. It gives you a large library of VIsion functions to work on your images. For more info goto:

NI IMAQ is a driver for our Frame Grabbers to capture images from cameras.

Conditional Build Tab for image leaves extra white space

I've applied the "Print" Conditional Build Tag to an image in
my online help. When I generate the help and view it in the
browser, extra white space is inserted between the steps. For
example, instead of the steps being:
1.
2.
3. etc.
They now look like this:
1.
2.
3. etc.
Why is there extra white space where the image used to be?

Probably there is a paragraph break or a space that you can't
see but is not enclosed in the conditional tag.
Check the html code immediately before and after the tag.

How do you make a color image black and white

I looked at the Adjust Image tool, but I could not see an easy way to make the color picture turn into black and white.
Yes I realize I could go back into iPhoto and do that. I don't want to do that.
In Word there is an image control that allows you to do various things with the image, including going to grayscale.

Thanks Walt. That indeed was easy. I had tride saturation before, but didn't get all the way left, so it just looked washed out. I decided, wrongly it appears, that it would not do as I needed. Thank you. I just wish something like that could have been in the help file or PDF.
I think once I get the hang of the nuances, this program will really rock. Its just taking longer than I anticipated. I mean, it is an Apple program---so I was counting on a lot more intuitive steps.
