Rate & Delete photos during slideshow in iPhoto '09 (8.1.1)

Generally, I like the new iPhoto. One thing I HATE is that I cannot find a way to delete or rate photos during a slideshow. In the last version, one option was a trash can, another was a rating. I use the slideshow to see the best, full screen detail of the photo. If it doesn't pass that test, I delete it. I can't find a simple convenient way to do that now. Am I missing something?

Yes, I can do that. It means I have to click on EVERY SINGLE PHOTO and again to move between photos in order to cull photos. A joy of digital photography is the ability to take lots of shots and choose to keep the best. In the old version it was wonderfully easy to use the slideshow to rate and delete photos right from a "last import." I had to click only once to do it and only on photos I wanted to rate or get rid of. I was hoping there might be a way that I wasn't finding in the new version. What I'm hearing is that a really valuable feature of the old version has been eliminated.

  • Permanently Deleting Photos and Folders from iPhoto

I just purchased my first iMac on April 2, 2008 and simply love it. Goodbye Windows. WooHoo...
OK, now for my question. I am a semi-professional photographer that commonly takes about 500-1,000 photos during any given photo shoot. Normally (on Windows with Adobe Photoshop), I would load all 1,000 photos into my Adobe Catalog and review them. After a few days of edits and review, I may only want to keep the best 50-100 photos and I delete the others. But when I use iPhoto, even if I delete the 900 extra photos from my Library, they still sit in the iPhoto Library folders and take up space. I have opened the iPhoto Library Package and can see the Data, Modified and Original folders with all of the unwanted files, but I was advised by Apple Support to NEVER delete or remove files by opening the iPhoto "Package".
Is there any way to physically remove the unwanted photos from iPhoto once they are in my iPhoto Library, or do I need to edit and review them outside of iPhoto before I load them into the iPhoto Library which seems to be a permanent thing?
This is a common process for photographers who take a lot of photos. It's nice to be able to review and edit them before deciding on the best ones to keep. Surely there must be an option from within iPhoto that would physically removed the deleted photos and update the iPhoto Library correctly, without having to open the iPhoto Package and risk corrupting the Library.
Since each photo will be between 4MB (jpg) to 10MB (RAW) in size, do I need to use another application for my initial sorting, review and editing, then only import into iPhoto the "Keepers"? If so, what application should I be using?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    JeanneV
    As stated above:
Put the pics in the iPhoto trash and then iPhoto Menu -> Empty the Trash
This removes the pics from iPhoto and the Hard Drive.
    A couple of notes:
    1. You need to be in the Library view to do this. If you delete from an album it only removes the pics from the Album. To put pics from an Album directly into the trash use the -delete keystroke
Are you sure that you're in the Library View? This is the most common reason this doesn't work. On a longer shot there may be minor issues with your HD, but first make sure that you're in the Library View when deleting.
Also, I want to have iPhoto write the "Modified" version of my images on top of the "Original"... to save HD space. Can that be done?
No. iPhoto preserves your Original file no matter what. This is hardwired into the application and there is no easy way to defeat it.
You may export all your pics from iPhoto. Empty out the iPhoto Library (put the pics in the trash, empty the trash) then re-import the one previously exported. But this is long winded and will need to be done as your library grows. And, of course, this will defeat the Non-Destructive editing feature of iPhoto.
You can run a library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Of, if you don't want your Original file preserved, then simply don't use iPhoto. There are alternatives out there. Search on MacUpdate.

  • Cant rate photos during slideshow mode

    Good day
In the Adobe Classroom in a Book LR5 pg 28 there is a method shown to start the slideshow - Window > Impromptu Slideshow.
It states that while you are running the slide show you can use the keys 1 - 5 to rate the photos and the left and right arrows top scroll through the photos.
the numbers indicate the rating but it does not apply the rating to the photo - when you get out of the slideshow the rating is the same as before I started the slideshow.
Additionally the left and right arrows dont appear to work.
Any ideas on what i would be doing wrong?
    thanks

    Cliquegge wrote:
OK Rob - so you'r saying this is the same for you - manual updating of the ratings works (as it does with me) but the "on the fly" rating during the impromptu slideshow doesn't work (same as me)
Also note hitting the esc button does NOT exit me from the slideshow - it appears that only a mouse click will perform the exit for me.
All true - sorry about the round-a-bout wording .
I suspect Adobe knows about it by now, but may be worth logging a bug (?)

  • How to delete photo's from both Iphoto and source (external HD) at the same time

I've seen a few postings on this but none seem to answer the quetion.  Sorry if this is a duplicate and I coudn't find the answer.
I have an external HD with over 4GB of pictures in various folders and subfolders.  I would like to import one folder at a time and go through the photo's using iPhoto to choose which ones I want to keep and which ones I don't.  If I come accross a picture I don't like I would like to delete it in iPhoto and at the same time have it deleted from my external HD.  I have tried the following with no success:
    1. Import photo's to iPhone and delete photo's I don't want.  I did this in the photo's view, not events or albums.
    2. After deleting the photo's I empited the iPhoto recyling bin which then sends the photo's to my Macbook pro recycle bin
    3. I then emptied the macbook pro recyle bin.
From what I've read this is how you're supposed to be able to delete photo's permantently form you HD or External HD.  The photo's I delete never end up getting erased from my external HD though.  So now I'm still stuck with a back up of a bunch of pictures I don't want on my external HD.  They are gone from iPhoto but this doesn't help or avoid taking up space.  This only cleans up iPhoto library but not my actual external HD.
So am I correct that there actually isn't any way to do this other than going through the photo's on my external HD using Finder and deleting them before importing to iPhoto?

A managed library is the default type that iPhoto creates.  Make sure you have the option selected to copy photos into iPhoto when importing:
was hoping it would at least keep thumbnails of all my photo's.
I use a DAM (digital asset management) program which will do exactly what you want: Media Pro 1.  It creates catalogs (libraries) of thumbnails, up to 640 x 480, that is uses to manage the photos.  You can do anything to the photos except edit, slideshows, or anything that requires the full source image when the source files are not available.  You can arrange  photos in Catalog Sets (like iPhoto albums), add keywords, etc. to them even when the sorce files are not available.  When the source files are available you can write that metadata to the source file and rename files. You can use Media Pro in demo mode for about a month I believe.
A catalog file for 44,000 photos (178 GB) with the thumbnails set for 320 pixels at high resolution is only 1.5 GB. The larger the thumbnail selected the larger the catalog file will be.

  • How to prevent resizing photos during slideshow?

    Hello,
I'd like to know if there is any possibility to see the photos in their exact size, when I run slideshow? I tried to switch on/of that "Scale photos to fill screen" option, but this just changes the rule which side of photo is resized to fill screen .
I'd like to see small photos rather in their exact size during slideshow than resized to fit width or height of the screen. If it is not possible in iPhoto 06, can I manage it in iMovie? I've never used that app but I've heard something about slideshows and iMovie or iDvd..
    Thank for your answers
    Honza

hope this one hasn't been answered millions of times already...It has.
I'd like to prevent it altogether. Can this be done? Not really. You need to use the ComponentListener to handle the componenResized events. You can get multiple events by adding the following to you code. The problem is you get lots of flickering when you handle each event and resize the frame.
    Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().setDynamicLayout(true);

  • Why cant I delete photos from event in Iphoto 08?

Set to edit in external editor. After trying to open movie, return to event and cannot delete photos. Open and close program a couple of times, reset to edit in new window, re-open program and I can delete, but only by dragging to the trash located in Iphoto window (cannot drag to desktop trash, use delete key, use command-option-delete etc). Works on a couple of photos, then will not let me delete in any manner again.
    Any idea what's going on?
    Thanks

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

  • Can't delete photos from iPhone using iPhoto.

I connect my iphone to mac, wait until the photos are syncronized, press delete photos and after a short process nothing happenes. If I connect my iphone later it's written that all photos are syncronized, I press delete photos and again nothing happanes. How to solve this problem?

Use Image Capture (in the Applications Folder) to do this.
Never let your computer erase data without you first checking that the data is safe. Specifically never use iPhoto (or any other app) to delete the photos from your Camera Card. Disconnect the camera, check the transfer has gone correctly and then use your Camera to Reformat the Card. This has three advantages:
    1. You know your data is safe - because you've taken the time to check it.
    2. Reformatting the card is much, much faster - takes a couple of seconds
    3. Reformatting also refreshes the Directory Structure on the Card, helping prevent issues with the card and prolonging its life.

  • Rating photos, during slideshow, iPhoto 9.6/Yosemite

    Hello
I used to be able to run a simple slideshow of images in iPhoto, and click on rating stars as it ran, great for easy photo sorting.
I've updated to Yosemite & iphoto 9.6, and I can see how to do this anymore ?
    Any ideas?  Thanks

    Thanks Leonie, that does work
When I do this it shows no clue on screen that the ratings have happened during the slide show, but I do see the ratings are there when its done.
It used to show a nice big 1-5 star display you could click on
    Anyway, you've solved my problem
    Thanks again

  • Delete photo during slide show view?

In older versions of iPhoto you could delete a photo while viewing them in slideshow mode. This was helpful in deciding what to keep after a big import. This feature seems to be missing in iPhoto '09. Any suggestions?

Yes this has gone and it's hard to see it as an improvement.
Workarounds: When you import your pics, view the first one at full size and you can then tap the right arrow key on your keyboard to move to the next one. As you do can tap command-delete to move unwanted pics to the trash.

  • Deleted Photos appear again after iPhoto-Restart

    Hi,
I am using a large iPhoto-Library from a Samba-shared directory. This works fine for a long time.
I just realised that deleting of photos and events seems to be buggy:
    1. When tragging a Photo to iPhoto-trashbin in still appears as an events, but also in the trashbin. When deleting the content of the trashbin the event disappears
    2. The crasy thing is is appears again when reloading the app
rebuilding of caches or anything doesn't help. I tried out a lot
I checked out in the finder: The picture was never deleted from its original folder. I deleted it manually. Now the thumbnail appears, but the white '?' comes up, when opening the picture
    Anyone having the same probem?

    Hi,
I am sorry that I was asking a question that was obvious to everyone.
As I didn't found a solution to make a MacOsExtended Journaled filesystem on ubuntu to mount and share it with samba or nfs (HFS+ seems to be quite similar, but cannot be mounted rw) it tried something different:
Instead of shareing the mounted filesystem through TCP/IP I am shareing the block-device now. I found an mac app that allows to act as iscsi initiator. To set up an LVM on ubuntu and make it in iscsi-divice is easy. Until now this works quite nice. I guess I will be able to use Timemachine though this mechanismn as well.
I would like to suggest something to the apple-developers:
It would be great to have a feature in iPhoto allowing use a local and a server-library. The local library only shows the Photos of the last 12 month or so, but the thumbnails of everything. Everytime you connect your server an automatic sync to the server library (containing everything) is done.
    Thanks a lot

  • Delete photos after import into iPhoto

Is it possible to delete the photos on the mac after they have been imported to iphoto?

Yes, if you're running a default Managed Library. In that scenario the file are copied into the iPhoto Library on import.
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Deleting photos in "trash" within iphoto

I have a trash icon within the iphoto menu on the left of my screen.
Iphoto will not let me delete these photos altogether or separately.
    How do I do this?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions,
What happens if you go to iPhoto Menu > Empty iPhoto Trash?
If that does not empty the trash, how many pictures do you have in the trash can currently?

  • Won't show entire photo during slideshow

I have many old scanned pics of various dimensions and when I create a slideshow, many of them are not shown in their entirety (think cropped) before the next slide comes. I have selected the "scale to fit" option but that doesn't quite get it done. Resizing them would distort the images, right? If I had small portrait pics in there and a large landscapes, wouldn't they come out looking like Kai's Super Goo projects?

I agree with the original post. I've got fairly regularly sized 4:3 photos, higher resolution than my screen, and I can't combine the Ken Burns effect and any other preference to ensure that I see the entire picture. Usually the top gets cut off - possibly because I have an iMac G5 whose aspect ratio is longer in relation to its height than my photos. The option to 'scale images to fit screen' doesn't seem to do anything either way - I would be happy with black bands at either side if I could get the whole pic but I can't. I can easily do this with GraphicConverter, a much simpler program. I am puzzled that people should be content to have slide shows where involuntary cropping takes place: and there's nothing in the Help file about it. Is it a Permissions problem?
    TIA

  • Sorting photos in slideshow in iPhoto 08

I created a slideshow for use in iDVD. But when I exported it to iDVD it reversed in order (the first photo is now a the end, etc). When I click "view" and "sort photos" none of the options such as "descending order" are allowed. I had already edited all 205 slides (Ken Burns effect, etc) so I hate to discard the slideshow and start over. Any ideas?

I think you posted in the wrong forum. You posted in the iPad forum.

  • Delete photo after imported into iPhoto?

I'm trying not to have duplicate photos staying on the same harddrive after I import them into iPhoto.
So, can I archive the original photo off my hard drive to an external after I import them into iPhoto?
I know it's perhaps a silly easy question, but I thought that I would ask before I start moving pictures off to my external drive.
    Many thanks,

Assuming that you are using the default (and very strongly recommended) managed library you have no need to keep the source image
