Rating a RAW thumbnail causes it to rotate and lock.

I use Bridge (CS3) to examine all the RAW files from my shoots and select the best for further processing in ACR. To do this I rate the thumbnails/images using the star system.
This works OK for RAW images that are in landscape (horizontal) format, but I strike a bug when rating images in portrait (vertical) format.
The majority of the time when I rate a portrait image, Bridge then immdeiately rotates the thumbnail (and the displayed image) 90 degrees anti-clockwise. The two Rotate buttons are then greyed out and I cannot rotate the images or thumbnails back to vertical. (If I select some affected images along with unaffected ones the Rotate buttons are not greyed out, but clicking on them only rotates the unaffected ones).
Removing the Rating doesn't fix the problem. They remain stubbornly rotated. This causes me problems when I go to do a second pass through the 5-star images to select the final ones for post-processing, as I have to turn my head to the side to get a proper look at the images (they are all people shots and it is very difficult to assess them unless they are oriented in an expected way).
This may be unrelated but I have also noticed that, for the unaffected images, I often have the ability to enter Audio, Video and DICOM metadata. Once they are rotated by Bridge I am no longer able to enter that metadata. (The images have been taken on a Canon 350D, so audio and video isn't applicable and this isn't a problem in itself, more just additional information about the problem).
I have been unable to find any other mention of this behaviour except for one thread on Flickr where another user mentions the same problem (with no solution).
It's a clean CS3 install on a new PC, and the images are all newly shot on a Canon 350D. I have the workspace arranged with thumbnails in a strip across the bottom and metadata in the righthand pane, but changing this layout doesn't fix the problem.
Anyone got an ideas?

This auto rotate is unusual, so must not be a universal problem with Bridge.  Just a thought here.
It could be the camera.  Some cameras have a setting to save the camera's Orientation for each exposure. This information is stored in the image file as EXIF data ( a form of metadata). File Browser recognizes the embedded data and attempts to "help" you by rotating your images to match the camera's assumption.  Check your camera's documentation to see how to turn it off.
Let us know if this works.
Note:  I have a Nikon with the Auto Image Rotation function ON, but do not have the problem you describe.

  • Raw Search Terms for "Spotlight Comment" and "Locked" Status

Is it possible to do a raw search for a specific Spotlight Comment. I know the option exists in the Other… dialog box, but I need to find files that do not contain comments which is not choice.
Also, is there any way to find only files that are unlocked?

If you go to Others and select Raw Query you can use it find items with a specific comment, and items without any comment. For example, if you have the comment "testme" in the Spotlight field you would paste this into the Raw Query field:
    kMDItemFinderComment == "testme"
and all files with that comment would be found. To find files in a folder that contain NO comment at all, you would use this:
    kMDItemFinderComment != "*"
Be warned though: when I tried this on a folder with only 5 items in it, 4 with comments and one without. it worked, returning the lone uncommented file, but it took an amazingly long time to do so (perhaps a minute, while the search for "testme" was instantaneous).
The "File readable" and "File writeable" functions shown in Others, which presumably are what one would use to find locked files, simply do not work. This is not surprising since the information about whether a file is locked or not does not in fact appear in a file's metadata. I guess that will be a future addition. You can use find in Terminal to search for files that are locked/unlocked. Let me know if you really want to do this.

  • Recently FireFox often has been causing 100% CPU usage and locks up until it finishes the process (various ones). Clearing cookies/cache didn't help. Any ideas?

    Windows 2000 SP4, 1g RAM, Firefox 9.0.1
We keep IE6 and Firefox open simultaneously for 2 different mail accounts. Firefox was always much faster even with 3 or 4 tabs open, but for the past couple of weeks when trying to update a screen the CPU suddenly goes to 100% usage and of course nothing will move until the particular process is finished. Closing one or more tabs does not help. If I close Firefox completely with Task Manager CPU usage goes back down to nil. After restarting Firefox CPU usage may or may not go back up depending upon whether it tries to continue the previous task that was locking it up.
It did not do this with Firefox 3.6 but then again it didn't happen immediately after updating to 9.0.1 either.

100% CPU usage occurred most often toward the end of the working day when busy trying to print on-line postage. We don't have any memory-consuming plugins but according to the knowledge base articles Firefox memory usage can gradually increase during the day even if you do nothing. It seems that may be the problem so we close and restart Firefox more often now as that usually fixes the problem. However, if we get stuck on a particular website update that causes the CPU to to go 100%, we can always start Firefox without previous tabs so the update will stop, or simply use a different browser until we have time to let the computer play games with itself.
So our workaround of restarting Firefox turns out to be the final solution (until we find something better - will post it if we do). Vic

  • RAW Thumbnails don't show in Bridge

I am very new to using Photoshop and Bridge (complete novice); I just took my first Photoshop class this weekend. Have never used either program before the class.
Thumbnails of my .NEF files (Nikon Camera RAW) are not showing up in Bridge. The files are there, there's just no image---it's just a generic icon. JPEG files are fine. They display as thumbnails in the "thumbnail view" just like they're supposed to. Also, the camera Metadata doesn't seem to be working either. It's like bridge isn't recognizing the .NEF files. the I've loaded the appropriate plug-ins into Photoshop which made it so I could open the .NEF files in that program (at first I couldn't). I found a plug-in folder in the Bridge Application Folder and copied the same plug-ins but it's not making it work. I also tried adding the files in Bridge by creating a new batch and also by clicking a dragging. What can I do to fix this? I want to be able to see the thumbnail image.
I'm using CS2 (9.0) on a Macbook Pro with OSX (tiger) and 1 gig RAM.

Since I have to go, I suspect that it is not Photoshop, but Windows 7, whose dialog boxes Photoshop uses.
You can set up Windows to display raw thumbnails using the Microsoft Codec Pack which you get here:
How do I view RAW pictures in Windows 7? - Microsoft Windows Help
Then Photoshop should be able to display them as thumbnails.

Please Please Please:let me rating my raw files in the iPad and then sync with LR.

definitely the battery wont be the problem.
The important thing is that the IPAD already can see the RAW files;)
would be very useful to make the rating in it.

  • Bridge CS3 no longer renders RAW thumbnails

Running PSE9 on OS 10.8.2 Mountain Lion.  Also running Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9 that I believe came bundled with PSE4 and which I have become fond of using as a tool for importing photos and other steps early in my workflow.  I shoot almost exclusively in RAW and sometimes in RAW/JPEG.  Recently, having made no change that I can remember, Bridge is no longer able to render thumbnails of the RAW files, instead showing just a thumbnail of a white sheet with the corner turned down; JPEG thumbnails render just fine.
I would be extremely grateful for anyone that can help me get the RAW thumbnails working again.  I suspect some anciliary file outside of the main program package since Adobe is so fond of sprinking useful files all over the place if that rings any bells.
I have tried to find a standalone Bridge CS3 installer on the web that I might use to re-write whatever is missing but I cannot find it.  It's an unusual request but if anyone would lend theirs to me I would also be grateful.
    Thank you in advance.

Turns out my sister is more a packrat than me and she still had her original PSE6 disk, which was also bundled with Bridge CS3.  Uninstalled/deleted 9 and Bridge and removed every trace of them and prior versions I could find (e.g Library files) to a flash drive.  Installed 6 along with Bridge and all seems to be back to normal.
Hopefully everything else still works right and I won't have to try-and-err putting Library files back one-by-one or something.  Once it feels like all is stable I'll be putting in my upgrades to PSE9.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

  • Rotated thumbnails don't stay rotated in full size

I recently upgraded to iphoto '11 and have been trying to go through photos and organize. If I look at thumbnails for an event, I can rotate the ones that need it using cmd+r and they appear as I wish, but if I view them full size or in a slideshow they are not rotated and are even distorted, as if resized. I rebuilt the library, thinking it was some corruption issue, but that didn't solve the problem. Any ideas?

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Photoshop Element 8's Bridge not showing RAW thumbnails

    Hello!
I use PSE 8 on a Mac with Snow Leopard. I'm shooting with a Canon EOS 550D.
Bridge used to display RAW thumbnails correctly, but it doesn't anymore. Just blank generic icons.
Now, I've reinstalled Camera Raw 6.1 (the Photoshop Elements Version), I've purged the cache (both globally from the preferences and locally from the Tools menu) in Bridge, but nothing has changed.
    Thanks for the help,
    Daniele

Thanks for that help. I had installed 6.1. It worked with my T2i  Canon but didn't show thumbnails (except as generic icons) In looking at ADOBE help for PSE you get the idea that 6.1 is needed. Deleted 6.1 and downloaded 5.7 and now thumbnail photos work.

  • RAW thumbnails missing after iPhoto library rebuild

iPhoto would not open for me shortly after upgrading to Lion. I rebuilt the library using command + option with all checkboxes checked. All JPEG thumbnails were present, but all RAW thumbnails just showed a black box with a dashed line. When I double click the missing thumbnail, the image does appear in iPhoto.
I then rebuilt the library a second time, but the problem is the same. The iPhoto library is in the normal place on the startup drive.
RAW photos were generated with a Canon Digital Rebel and Canon 40D cameras. I do have Aperture on the system as well.

As I say, I've seen it take 4 times to work.
    Other than that:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • RAW thumbnails not showing up as images

I just upgraded to CS6 today but my RAW thumbnails are not showing up. I have a new camera but a new upgrade should be formatted already for the newer cameras I would think. Anyway, anyone know what I need to do?

    Hi,
The first thing i would do is from within photoshop cs6 go to Help>Updates to get the latest
updates for your adobe software which includes the newest camera raw plugin.
Also, which camera are the files from?

  • Raw thumbnails

Why is it that when shooting in Raw my thumbnails look about the correct exposure etc, however when they are opened in the RAW editor they are usually washed out and need a lot of manipulating to get back to the way the thumbnail apprears. I have PSE 3. I have the Settings in the RAW editor in either Camera Raw Defaults, or Image Settings. Either way it seems to make no difference - and all the other settings (Exposure etc) are ticked on Auto when I open the RAW Editor.

I presume you are on about how Elements makes auto adjustments to the Raw images, this is also a nuisance in the Organizer as well because if you have bracketed exposures all the thumbnails look the same as well which does not make choosing the correct exposure easy ;)
OK the first thing you have to do is open a image in the raw converter and untick all the auto boxes then click on the little arrow next to the settings box and select "Camera Raw Defaults".
now whenever you open a raw image it will be without any auto adjustments.
If you also wish your Raw thumbnails in Organizer to look how they were when you took them you will have to go to the Organizer and Select (Highlight) all your raw thumbnails and choose Edit> update thumbnails for selected items.
    Hope this helps

  • Need to view RAW thumbnails from Canon 7D MK II.  Using Elements 13.

Has Adobe released codex for viewing raw thumbnails from new Canon 7D MKII?  When I call Canon, they suggested contacted Adobe.

There was a new update released yesterday called Camera Raw 8.7.1.  If you haven't updated yours then it is worth a try but your particular camera wasn't mentioned in their blog.
    <Camera Raw 8.7.1 is now available>
    Good luck.

  • Opening RAW thumbnails in elements 9 Organizer

Any ideas on how I can open RAW thumbnails imported from my canon 5D Mark 11 in the Organizer.

PSE9 usually ships with ACR 6.2 as does the boxed product so you should be able to see your thumbnails in Organizer.
Use Click+Shift or ctrl+click to select images - them click Fix >>Full Photo Edit.
The images will automatically open in Camera Raw.
Click open to send them for further editing in PSE or click Done to save them.
