Rating filter

Is Aperture bugged?
Sometimes when I filter for 3 stars and above it includes random selections rated below and sometimes just a group of images leaving out other 3 star rated images?
Is there a modus operandi I should be following?
In Adobe bridge..you just click and its sorted!...so why is it so hard and complex in Aperture?

that's a hard one.
for some people, projects will be collections of photographs from one photo shoot. for others (like myself), projects will be long term collections. for example, I have projects for Birds, Animals, Insects and Family (not in that order though
I have a top-level folder called "  to process" (with two leading spaces to keep it at the top of the list) which contains all of the newly-imported rolls of 'film' that need to be rated, keyworded, categorised and moved. each roll of 'film' is a project in itself. if I move all of the images out of the project into other existing projects, I'll delete the original empty project.
I have another top-level folder called "Nature". it's structured as:
Nature (folder)
  Animals (project)
    " unidentified" (smart album)
    Bats (smart album)
etc
  Birds (project)
    " unidentified" (smart album)
    Bulbuls (smart album)
    Buzzards (smart album)
etc
I actually have a top-level " unidentified" keyword that I apply to all nature images whose subjects I do not yet recognise. I can then use this keyword to collect all of those unknown creatures together until I find them in my books, categorise them, re-keyword them and remove the " unidentified" keyword which automatically removes them from the first album.
I was going to have one project per species but it seemed too complex to administrate in the long run.
another top-level folder is "Travel":
Travel (folder)
  2002|Russia (project)
  2005|09 Indonesia (project)
    Albums (folder)
      Indonesia 2005, Day 1 (smart web album: keyword = "Web Album 1", custom theme)
      Indonesia 2005, Day 1 Cover (web journal, custom theme specifically to create 'cover/intro pages' for my albums)
      Indonesia 2005, Day 2 (smart web album: keyword = "Web Album 2")
      Indonesia 2005, Day 2 Cover (smart web album)
something that doesn't get discussed much here is how Aperture uses 'scopes'. when you add a smart album to a project, only the images from that project will be available to that album. the same applies for other filtered objects. it's very powerful and simplifies many of the arrangement tasks we have to do. it's much easier to know that you're filtering from a subset than from the whole of the library.
if you want to set up albums or filtered objects with images from anywhere in the library, simply create them at the root level. you can then apply filters or drag images from anywhere in the library and add them to your albums, etc.
additionally, remember that Stacks were designed to keep near-identical usually rapid-fire photos together in one heap, allowing you to simplify your collection. one image from each stack can be selected as the Pick of the stack which will be the one referred to by Aperture when you add the stack to albums, etc or when you sort/filter your images. stacks were not designed for general grouping of images.
if you need any more help, shout.

  • Bug in LR 3.4 changing folders show not the 1st photo after setting rating filter

    Bug in LR 3.4 ?
    In the Library module, I have several folders.
    Folder 1 contains 100 photo's
    Folder 2 contains 100 photo's
    After rating the photo's in folder 1 (let say I rated 10 photo's with one star, then I changed the viewing status to Filters - Rated - > 1star) and I get to see the 10 photo's
    Then I switch to folder 2 (which has filters off). In stead of beginning with photo 1 (the beginning), it starts the focus on the image wich is no 17 or anyway much higher (i think the photo no of the 1st rated photo in folder 2).
    Has anyone experienced this behaviour?

    Yes,
    folder 1: Filter - Rating > *
    folder 2: Filters OFF
    And both are sorted at Capture Time. So when changing from folder 1 (with rating) to folder 2 (without rating) it starts not at the beginning.
    I have also a folder 3 without rating (same as folder 2), and if I go from folder 3 to folder 2 it starts at the beginning as it should be.
    Also: if have the following setup concerning filters:
    Library Filters: - Lock Filter
    Library Filters: - Remember each source's filter separately (so I can change the filter settings on each folder)
    NOTE, I can reproduce it:
    It appears that switching from folder 1 to folder2 (as described above) the focus on folder 2 is the first picture with a rating, and NOT the first picture at all. And that is with Filters OFF. Switching from folder 1 to folder 3 (no photos are rated in this folder),it starts at the first photo (as expected).

  • Rating filter moves images on light table into a single pile

    Anyone seen this?
    I have a bunch of images arranged on the light table with various star ratings. The images are arranged by number of stars into various grouping - all the 5's together etc.
    When I use the filter in the browser to see only the 5's for example, the light table will show only the 5's as epxected.
    When I then select unrated or better, all the rest of the images end up in a single pile on the light table.
    If I filter on 3 or better, and then switch back, just the 2s and 1s end up in the pile, ie whatever is not displayed by the filter gets piled up.
    Is this a bug or "feature"? If it's a feature it's very annoying, unless there is some way to "lock" the position of an image on the LT.

    OK, so figured out a convoluted bodge-around:
    1. Make an album of all your selects. Select all and make a new Light Table(LT) from all.
    2. With LT selected, click the lock icon.
    3. With LT still selected, hold down apple key, and select your album of selects (step 1). This opens this album in a separate tab, but because lock icon on LT is selected, the LT viewer area is still visible.
    4. in you album of selects, type your chosen keyword search. From the resulting set, select and drag the image(s) to the LT viewer. Do this with as many keyword searches as required. When done you can optionally close the selects album tabbed browser.
    5. Use LT as you normally would. You can now toggle on/off images by keyword by typing it in search field.
    Any other methods I've tried crashes Aperture.
    Comments anyone?

  • Can't install on my samsung vibrant because of "content rating filter" even after I have allowed for install of non-market apps. Firefox website says incompatible as well and my android platform is a version above.

    I have a samsung vibrant phone. I am running android eclair, I think its 2.1. I was trying to instal firefox. Linking from the web to the android market, I get "app not found msg." To link from the web, I changed my phone setting to allow apps from non-market sources. When I visit the firefox web page for android I get an "app not compatible with phone" msg. same msg for both regular and beta, but my phone is listed in the compatible phones list. Upon trying to install anyway, I get an "incompatible with content filter settings" msg. What does all of this mean and how can I change it?

    "Content filter" is the Android Market's method for restricting certain applications that may provide access to "mature" content. You can disable content filtering in the settings of the Market app on your phone.

  • Star rating filter has stopped working

    I have always sorted my photos by using star ratings but all of a sudden the filter has stopped working properly.
    For instance,
    >= 4 stars works as expected
    >= 3 stars displays 'no photos match the filter'
    It affects my entire catalogue and is fundamental to my workflow.
    Has anyone else had this and does anyone have any suggestions how to fix the problem? It seems to affect both my laptop and my desktop computer.
    Dan

    Just to say I have just updated to 5.3 and this has no effect on the problem.
    Also, I tried creating a smart collection and it exhibits the exact same problem - a rule 4* or greater works fine, 3* or greater does not.
    It's bizarre and a complete pain!

  • Retaining rating for images after PS edit

    In LR2, I could rate my images in LR, edit in PS and once done, they reappeared in LR, complete with the rating of the original image.  In LR3, once edited and returned to LR, they lose their rating.  I find this very frustrating as I have to undo the rating filter, find the edited copy of the image, then reapply the filter.  Such a waste of time!  I like to filter a shoot and only look at the images I will be working on and I expect the edited version to retain it's star rating.
    I hope I have been clear enough.  Has anyone struck this issue and more importantly, do they have a fix for it.  Interestingly, I had the beta version of LR3 and I didn't have this problem.  Trialling LR3 now.
    I love some of the features of LR3, but will be returning to LR2 if I can't fix this issue.
    Cheers
    Beth

    It is very frustrating.  I tried both options and still no ratings -
    and now it froze my Lightroom
    It is crazy that this one small thing changed in Lightroom - they
    should know better than to mess us up

  • Nested XML filter / freezing

    Hi Spry,
    I'm currently working on a nested DataSet filter, but it
    freezes up the browser and keeps eating memory.
    I cannot give / grant any1 access to our test servers,
    because they run on a secure router. So i can only provide the
    filter and the current on line page.
    The filter function:
    function filter_rooms(){
    var els =
    document.forms['searchpannel'].getElementsByTagName('input');
    var filter = '';
    for (var j=0; j < els.length; j++){
    var input = els[j];
    if (input.type == 'checkbox' &&
    input.id.match(/^p[0-9]$/) && input.checked){
    filter += input.id.replace(/^p/, '');
    if (typeof myRoom == 'function')dsRooms.removeFilter(myRoom,
    true);
    if (filter !== ''){
    filter = new RegExp('^['+filter + ']');
    document.getElementById('allrooms').checked = false;
    myRoom = function(dataSet, row, rowNumber) {
    return filter.exec(row["numpersons"])? row : null;
    }else{
    document.getElementById('allrooms').checked = true;
    myFilter = false;
    }if (typeof myRoom == 'function')dsRooms.addFilter(myRoom,
    true);
    this is just the basic of the filter, when this is working i
    still have to figure out how im gonna check if a hotel has any
    rooms left after filtering, if none i have to remove the hotel for
    the result page. (but this is something to do later :P )
    Page of problems + instructions of getting there:
    Url:
    http://www.hotels.nl/indexen.html
    Press the button: Find best deals!
    (because u need the correct param's to view the page).
    I cant give the link to the xml feed, but u all know to view
    it in firebug so i highly doubt this will be a problem
    Here u will see the current search environment. The filter is
    activated in the same way as the Star Rating filter. (same amount
    of check boxes, and values send etc).
    I wonder why it crashes. Is it because i linked dsRooms to as
    nested xml set to the paging? Or am i just doing something wrong
    here.
    Note: I am aware that the current core file that we are using
    still contains the old filter error (the if statement) But on our
    test server we are working with the fixed version, so this is not
    the issue.
    The core file is a bunch of spry scripts packed together so
    we have less HTTP requests.
    If u require information on what is packed in it, feel free
    to ask. But i highly doubt its needed.
    Nutshell version: help :)
    V1

    Hello Kin, your solution worked okay, but i seem to found a
    little problem using nested filters.
    When u apply a filter to a nested xml, it will be deleted
    when u apply or postload the parent dataset.
    U could ofcourse use a observ for that, for some that would
    be a solution, but for me, not really. <-- i tryed to use that.
    But in my case i have a problem with that, becouse when there
    are no rooms left in the Nested list. i have to filter out the
    hotel. So i call a filter on the parent hotel, wich will delete the
    rooms filter, wich will be called again on postload, and create a
    loop.
    I tryed using Spry:if statement, it does hide the hotel, but
    it doesnt update the paged view ( it only "hides" the rows, but
    doesnt update the amount of items per page, so u could have 10
    results on a page instead of the set 30).
    I dont know if spry:if would work like that. Or if its a
    small error. If it all works like it supposed to work, than maby i
    should try to use flattend nested xml using xpath(subpath).
    If u got any idea's or suggestions, feel free to post
    ;)

  • Tags on thumbnails in organizer

    I have lost the tags on each of the thumbnails --- they are not visible.   It appears they are tagged but I am unable to see them on each of the thumbnails.  They were there, now are not.  How can I get them visible again?

    Hi Elements User,
    Which version are you using? I don't see a small checkbox near Star rating filter. Or are You using a MAC and that is different from windows?

  • Lightroom Library Grid Mode - Uncommanded Ratings Changes and System Crash

    I have Lightroom 5.  When I am in Library Mode and Grid view with a rating filter set, I get the following:
    On multiple occasions, when the mouse is in the vicinity of the "set Rating" stars, the existing ratings of photos in the grid start changing one after the other for no reason (no mouse clicks).
    When I try to use the Undo command to restore the correct prior rating,. Lightroom ALWAYS crashes and shutsdown.
    Has anyone seen this before?

    Are you using a Bluetooth mouse? My Apple Magic Mouse sometimes scrolls by itself for a few instants after I click on something. By that I mean that if I move it sideways or up and down, without having my fingers on its top, it acts as if I had swiped my finger on its active surface. If this happens while your cursor is on or near the ratings field, it may act as if you were changing the rating on purpose? Of course, this is just a guess, as you did not state your OS or hardware.

  • Stacking issue..

    Hi ! I'm using LR 2.4 (camera raw 5.4) on a Mac. The problem I'm having is this :
    I want to edit a file in Nik Software so I do an "edit in"...mplah mplah mplah and select "stack with original". The file that returns to LR (although stacked with the original) has lost its rating, so I suddenly lose it (as I have a rating filter on...)
    This behavior has only been the standard since a couple of days. It used to work fine until now.
    Any suggestions ?
    Thanks,

  • Edit in...other application

    I have just upgraded to Lightroom 3, although I am using the free 30 day trial for now.
    I am editing images in third party software (Nik Viveza 2).
    In Lightroom 2.X after saving the Nik edits, I would return to Lightroom and the edited tif image would adopt the same star rating as the original file and sit next to it in the grid/filmstrip.
    In Lightroom 3, after saving the Nik edits, the edited tif file has no star ratings. Therefore, I have to remove the star rating filter, search for the tif file, give it a star rating and reapply the star rating filter to keep working. Any ideas how do I set Lightroom to apply the original files star rating to the edited tif image?

    Try saving metadata (Ctrl+S) before launching the external editor.
    Thanks Dorin. Is it a known issue? Hopefully 3.1 isn't too far away then.
    Thanks for the metadata tip. That will be a handy work-around for now.

  • Can i filter app store by rating

    I want to search the app store and filter apps by rating.  Is that possible?

    There is no such filter.

  • Filter songs by rating (on the fly, without smart playlists)

    Is there any way (3rd party app maybe) that would allow you to live filter the displayed/played songs by rating? ie. if I have an artist selected, and all 200 songs are shown by that artist -- I would like to select on the fly to only display/play songs that are rated 2 or higher.
    Aperture has a similar function that does not require making smart lists -- "Display only 2 or higher" of the current album, etc. -- AND you can sort with a sub-filter in addition (in iTunes, I would show/play only 2 and higher, and maybe sub-sort by album, or shuffle it.)
    The only current way to do this is to create a unique smart playlist for every artist, genre, etc. that you would want to filter by rating in that way. Alternately, you can sort by rating, so the best are at the top, but with large selection of those ratings I often want to be able to shuffle the order within that selected rating range.
    This software addition would be very useful!
    Thanks for any tips...

    Merci beaucoup for the response. However, what you described in both cases are the workarounds that I described & that I've been using.
    With sort by rating solution, the music can then only be sorted by rating -- and there will be songs of lower ratings played eventually.
    Let me try to describe what I'm looking for more precisely:
    Like in Aperture, there would be a small gui selection toward the top of iTunes, and you select what ratings should be shown/played -- for example, 2 & higher. Then, there will be no songs shown/played that are below 2 stars. You can then have it play on shuffle, or sorted by other data such as artist, album, etc. -- and you will never hear a song below 2 stars.
    The smart playlist is the other workaround I've used, but it's also not the solution. It requires making a separate smart playlist for every possible artist/genre, etc. that you would want only (for example) 2 stars & above to play. For example, if on a whim I wanted to listen to all of my U2 music on random/shuffle -- I'd like to be able to just select Artist-->U2, and with the 2+stars GUI selection, I know I will never hear anything below 2 stars -- *without* having to take the time to make a smart playtlist for this random & rare mood. If I suddenly want a even higher selection of U2, I just click the 3stars GUI selection, and the shown & playable songs instantly update. No need to always have to create & edit smart playlists for such random selections...
    This interface works extremely well in Aperture - I wish they'd migrate it over to iTunes!
    I hope I'm clearer now... Thanks again

  • Filter Import by Number of Rating Stars and other such

    My work flow is to look at the card with Nikon ViewNX2, and assign rating stars to the keepers, then import the keepers
    into Lightroom.  I  can't see the stars in the import dialog, though I can see them once I  do the import.  LR clearly
    understands the rating stars because it can import them.  I'd like to be able to see the rating stars in the import dialog and
    filter on them at import time.  I suspect that there are others out there that would like to filter on color labels and the flags.
    Why not use Lightroom for the review?  I sometimes don't have the Lightroom computer with me, or any computer at all.
    Nikon ViewNX2 is free, and I can install it on whatever computer is handy.  It's also fast, and understands dual monitors.
    Simliar logic applies to BreezeBrowser and even the free Microsoft software.
    There was some discussion of this in http://forums.adobe.com/thread/724396?tstart=0.

  • Filter files by rating before import?

    Is there any way of filtering files by rating BEFORE importing them from my camera to my PC? I can sort them once they have been imported but it would save a lot of hard drive space if I could only import the ones I rated before importing. Thanks.

    No, there's no way. Few cameras allow you to set ratings.  If you want to save hard drive space, just use the library filter and delete the files after importing.
