Rating Music

What's the API to change a media item's rating? I can find my music tracks, and get their MPMediaItem. I know how to pull their MPMediaItemPropertyRating property. I don't know what class/function is needed to alter the music rating. Thank you.

That's because a public setter method does not exist. You are plumb out of luck.

If you manually manage the device the you can remove the content from the PC after you have put it on the device. However this isn't the recommended way. At some point you'll probably need to restore it which involves wiping all the data. If you don't have all this data to hand then you'll have to try to recover it from a now problematic device first. It's much easier to sync with your library - yes you have two copies, but that's not a waste, it is prudent. As long as you have two copies you can afford to lose one knowing you have a backup. In practice I keep a complete backup of my library, in addition to the subsets of it that I can put on my devices.

  • Rating music in IOS 5 made very hard

Since the update to IOS 5 the now called "Music" player automatically displays the album artwork when playing another song, even if I select the song explicitly by tapping on it. This makes rating my music very hard since I have always to switch back to the list view by tapping the list icon in the lower right corner.
I do not like applications that assume I am stupid and do the thinking for me. Apple is on the way to match Microsoft ...
Why am In not even enabled to switch this behavior off? For rating music the iPad is now nearly useless.
@Apple: Please change this behavior or give us options to select what WE want. Could not be that hard ...

I'd like to second this. If I have put the music app in list view it shouldn't switch on me every time the song changes. I like to put on a playlist of unrated music and star each song. This "feature" makes the process very annoying.

  • Rating Music On 5G 30GB iPod

    iPod: 5G, 30GB
    OS: Windows XP
Sync: Manually manage music and videos
I've recently started rating my songs on my iPod so I can have a smart playlist for my favorites. I had rated a lot of songs on my iPod using the iPod itself since I was away from the computer and iTunes. When I connected my iPod to my computer, all my ratings were gone, and remain gone when I disconnect my iPod from the computer. However, when I make the ratings on iTunes on my computer, the rating remains when my iPod is connected as well as when it is not.
How can I retain ratings I make on the go?
    5G, 30GB Windows XP
      Windows XP

I'm pretty sure I set it to automatic.
The "Manually manage music and videos" is UNCHECKED.
Is there anything else I could be doing wrong. This is so frustrating. I restored and resynced and everything too.

  • With new IOS, can't synch all my "top rated" music to iPhone--Help needed

I've just updated my iPhone 3gs to the latest OS. But in synching my music, I only get a portion of my "Top Rated" and "recently added" music...any suggestions on how to get all of them?
I've re-started and re-synched my computer and iPhone several times.
Anybody with some wisdom here? Many thanks.

The first thing I would do is try to use Image Capture on the Mac to pull all of the Photos off your old iPhone.  The Image Capture program is found in your Applications/Utilities folder.  After you have them on your computer, download the free program Pic Share It.  Install the free version of it on your iPad and then drag and drop the photos from your Mac to your iPad.  Here's a video showing you how it work.

  • IPod Interface on 3GS Phone Becomes Unresponsive While Rating Music

I recently purchased a 32gb 3GS iPhone so I could finally store my entire music library on the phone instead dividing it up in to what could fit on 16gb.
The problem I'm seeing now is that when I'm playing music and I rate a song, the iPod interface will be completely unresponsive for anywhere from 5 to 15 seconds. It will continue to queue up the button presses and then once it comes back, it'll jump all over the place as it responds to all the buttons that were pressed. This happens for any song in live updating smart playlists (with live updating on and off) and normal playlists.
I've seen other threads that talk about this and they recommended that I start fresh with the 3GS and don't restore from a back up of my old 3G but that didn't make any difference.
Any one else seeing anything like this?

Exactly the same thing is happening to me since I upgraded to 4.0. I have the 32gb 3Gs. In the middle of a call the screen goes black, the apple logo appears and I have to wait up to a minute for the regular screen to reappear. It happens every time I spend more than three or four minutes on a phone call.

  • How do i stop itunes from syncing all my music to iphone

I have a problem where I have all my music syncing on to my iPhone even when "sync music" is unchecked in the iTunes application.
The data bar at the bottom of the screen shows that the sync worked (increased data amounts become available) but the music is still on the iphone.
I have even deleted music off my laptop but it still shows on the iPhone.
I've read the discussions on similar issues but can't seem to find a remedy. I discovered this problem when I needed to create some free space on the phone to add an app update. I decided to just keep my Top Rated music on the phone but as I say, everything is still there. The sync's seem to work.
Any ideas please. I've spent a fair amount of time already on this.
I am using ms notebook. iphone 5 with latest software (iOS 8.1.3).
Hope someone has some ideas. Thanks.

    Hello phil.winter,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you would like to remove your music from your iPhone but are thus far unsuccessful. I know that you have already unchecked the Sync Music box and report that the music remained on your iPhone, but did you click the Apply button in the bottom right hand corner of iTunes after you unchecked that box? If not please try this step and let me know if the issue continues.
Sync your iPhone, iPad, and iPod with iTunes using USB - Apple Support
Click the Sync button in the lower-right corner of the screen to sync your content. Only the information in the content list you've enabled syncing for will sync to your computer. If you made any changes to any of the settings, first click the apply button.
    Have a great day,
    Joe

  • I have a PC, windows 8, how do I sinc my Top Rated play list from my Itunes on my computer to my Iphone 5?

I have been syncing my iphone with my Pc Windows 8 Itunes.  I thought it would automatically take my "top Rated" music from my Computer and add it to my phone.  What can I do to make this happen?  And since there are levels of ratings can I sort the play list by the 5 star one down??  thanks guys

    Hi DebbieLC!
I have an article for you that can help you troubleshoot this issue a little further. We have an article that explains what to do if you have no content in your iTunes after updating, and it can be found here:

  • Seems a very nice music-sync feature has been dropped (Touch 8GB, 3rd gen)

    Hi,
I don't know whether this has been brought up before (searched various sections of the support forums but did not find any reference to it) but if so, please excuse me.
Before upgrading my touch to iOS4 and/or updating to the latest versions of iTunes (I don't know which of those two updates can be accounted for this missing feature, that's why I mention both) there was a nice music sync option via which you could define the amount of disk space to fill up with music (you could also select f.e. that you preferred higher rated music to be selected) which would randomly fill your touch up to the limit specified with a random list of music.
It seems this functionality is dropped (at least I couldn't find it anymore) for my iPod Touch. It was a feature I really loved. All I am left with now is to either select "entire music library" or "selected artist, playlist or genre". Selecting the first won't work as my iTunes library is ten times bigger than what would fit on the iPod, the second option does not really randomize the music list but always makes a selection out of the playlists I have. Next to that I completely lost the possibility to define the maximum amount of memory to reserve for music.
Am I so stupid that I overlooked this feature completely or has this really been dropped? If so does anybody know why it has been left out in the latest iTunes versions?
    Rgds,
    Jan.

    i liked this feature too
i used to have it on my mp3 player too.
    :O)

  • Problem importing song rating from WMP10

I want to import (transfer?) ratings info from 20G of music saved in Windows Media Player 10. With a fresh install of iTunes onto my Windows XP machine, it imports my library info (song name, artist, composer, etc.) except it does not import ratings info (1 to 5 stars). I spent all Summer rating my music in WMP10 - please tell me there's an automatic way to get this into iTunes. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Ref: can't import WMP10-rated music, I saved them as MP3s, figuring that would be simplest if I ever wanted to change music players (like now that I want to buy an iPod).

  • Suggestion, Music ratings for iMovie

I have noticed that when looking at your music selection for the movie, imovie does not allow you to rate your music, or view the rating that you may have already placed on them. In my opinion I believe for this to be an important feature when trying to create a sound track for your movie.

Not to be a party pooper but this is by no means a function of a video editor. There is iTunes for rating music. Now, it would be nice if iMovie showed your iTunes ratings but... You can make a playlist of favorite or "starred items in iTunes rather easily.

  • ITunes Match weird glitches on my iPhone 5

    Hello Community.
I'm having a weird problem with iTunes Match, pmart playlists, and songs downloaded to my iPhone. I have used smart playlist on both my Mac and iPhone for as long as I can remember and havent incountered any significant issues until now.
The smart playlist in question I've named Top Rated Music.
    The rules are as follows:
-Match all of the following rules:
    -Rating is *****
    -Genre does not contain Country
-Limit to 150 items selected by most recently added.
    -Match only checked items
    -Live updating
Now this works perfectly fine on my iPad, and Mac. It has always worked on my iPhone prior to iOS 7. What happenes is the playlist works for a few days then stops randomly shuffles the music in no order and not matching the Playlist on my Mac. Random songs will also not appear on the playlist. The only thing I do differently is I download all of the songs on my iPhone in that specific playlist. The reason is that Mobile providers in Canada offer nothing close to an unlimited data plan. Easy to go over if your playing music from the cloud.
Thats where I think the problem lies, the iPhone seems to glitch after a couple days when the music has downloaded. It also seems weird because you cant delete the music off the phone once its been downloaded. I've tried both through iTunes on my Mac and manualy managing music, as well as on the phone itself song by song.
    Things i've tried.
-Restoring phone (Works for a couple days then glitches up again)
    -Replacing phone (Same as above)
-Deleting song using iTunes (Songs wont delete just reapear)
-Deleting songs using iPhone (Songs dont apear anymore, but show up using itunes mac)
    Any help would be appreciated.

Go to Settings > iTunes and App Stores and set to "use cellular data" to ON. Be aware this will use your mobile data allotment when streaming music.

  • Itunes crashes whenever I try to do anything...

Adding folders, deleting songs, rating music, whenever an album finishes, my itunes continually crashes. It's been doing this for the past few software updates, so I don't know what is going on. I've tried doing a total uninstall and that didn't work either. Anyone have any advice? I'm just about ready to trash this piece of junk program and get a music player that won't crash every fifteen minutes...

Negatory.  I've done that: no help.
After consulting with a support guy on the phone, we finally made some progress by moving one of my library files.  When I started iTunes back up, all of my podcasts were gone...but iTunes worked.  That is, at least until I started trying to resubscribe and redownload podcasts.  If I try subscribing to a podcast, I have a 75% chance of it crashing iTunes; I can check this by trying to go into my Podcast tab as it's downloading.  If I can click on all my podcasts and look at them while a new one is downloading, then the new one is fine and safe; if it freezes and crashes, then I know not to try to download that podcast again.  And yes, it seems to be specific podcasts that cause it.  This is really annoying.

  • Smart playlists for file location?

I have half my music on my powerbook hd, and half on an external drive. I want to create a smart playlist of all the music on the internal drive, and one of all the music on the external.
Is this possible? Perhaps I need something else though... I want to avoid the situation of click on a song, and getting the 'not found' prompt, and only see music that is available to me at the time.
    Thanks!

Both correctly include 2 1/2 star songs when one of their criteria is "greater than 2 stars".
Are you sure the songs are not getting includes as part of other criteria in the list?
Very. Each playlist has just two criteria (both of which must match): "Rating is greater than 2" and "Playlist is ___". In fact, I've used those two lists (which between them include essentially all of my rated music) to create a "Rated 2.5" list (which correctly contains all of my 2.5 rated songs and nothing else).
the Smart Playlist option "Rating 'is greater than'" is not mathematically correct, since it does not treat 3 1/2 as greater than 3
It is mathematically correct. You mean it does not work in adding 3 1/2 rating to the playlist.
Yes, that's what I meant, so perhaps I should rephrase: the actual behavior seen after choosing "is greater than" is not the behavior described by the mathematical inequality "A is greater than B" (since some songs with ratings that are greater than B are not included).
On a technical note, the behavior seems to be in "iTunes Library", not in "iTunes Music Library.xml"...
iTunes does not use the iTunes library.xml file. It is created by iTunes only for other applications to access the library.
Ah, thank you! That's good to know. Interestingly, when I look inside the XML file to compare one of my two "especially smart" playlists to what ought to be a perfect duplicate of it (but isn't) there /is/ one small difference in the "Smart Criteria" section (in the next-to-last line of data there, the better-behaving list has a "Bk" in a place where the worse-behaving one has an "A7"). Is there any way for an ordinary user to edit the internals of the actual iTunes Library database?
Have you looked over at dougscripts.com for something on this?
Yup. There are two or three scripts there for setting half-star ratings, but skimming through all search results for 'half-star' or '"smart playlist"' didn't turn up anything relevant.
