Rating Photos 1-5

Hi there,
I use the rating feature of iPhoto all the time to help cull the rubbish and keep the good stuff, while using the 5 star stuff in print projects and slide shows etc.
Is there anyway to do this in Photos, without clicking on the info button and then adding a manual Keyword of X Star? this makes it into a massively long boring process, in iPhoto all i needed to do was hit cmd+1-5.
Thanks!!!

Winston,
Thanks for you speedy response, I like to work with software rather than moan about it, I'm happy that the star ratings are now in the keywords, there are a few benefits. One of them is that I understand this will now be embedded in the exif info on the photo file, I don't think that was the case in iPhoto, (I could be wrong!) My winge is that to add these I don't have the shortcut key to do it in an instant... Well things move on and I do believe that apple would have done their research, so I'm now thinking that maybe this was not the best way to sort and manage my snaps anyway... So I now have 2 follow on questions...
Is there a how to guide on how best to work with the Photos app specifically looking at sorting, organising and cataloging of my snaps in Photos? (Apple help, forums or you tube etc??
Are we able to 'create' shortcut keys that will assign some of my most popular keywords to a photo or group of photos?
Thanks!

  • Bug?  Rated photos won't laod on 5G iPod

Does anyone else have this issue. I posted earlier about problems getting all my photos on my ipod and only unrated photos got loaded. So I got home and put no rating on all those same photos and they loaded. Can anyone else confirm this?

Rating Photos??? Is this an Apple computer feature only?? I have seen nothing in my Windows version about rating photos.

  • Importing ONLY rated photos from Canon 5d3 to lightroom 4.4

Is there a way of rating a handfull of photos in the Canon 5d3 and import only the rated photos to lightroom 4.4?
I dont use the canon software supplied as it is just one more thing to do and will delay the process if i want to get news images out quickly.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the replies.
First, I don't have a card reader and yes, I probably should get one eventually.  To clarify, import is not slow, it simply does not even attempt to import.  When I connect my 50D with a card full of RAW files, LR detects it but it shows "No Photos Found."  I honestly don't think that it is LR's fault, it really seems like there is some obvious setting I have missed on either my camera or LR.
    Thanks.

  • Rating photos, during slideshow, iPhoto 9.6/Yosemite

    Hello
I used to be able to run a simple slideshow of images in iPhoto, and click on rating stars as it ran, great for easy photo sorting.
I've updated to Yosemite & iphoto 9.6, and I can see how to do this anymore ?
    Any ideas?  Thanks

    Thanks Leonie, that does work
When I do this it shows no clue on screen that the ratings have happened during the slide show, but I do see the ratings are there when its done.
It used to show a nice big 1-5 star display you could click on
    Anyway, you've solved my problem
    Thanks again

  • Command-5 shortcut for 5-star rating photos in iPhoto not working

When I go to 5-star rate a photo in iPhoto using the default Command-5 shortcut, the shortcut no longer works.
The Command-1, Command-2, Command-3, Command-4 shortcuts work for (1-star through to 4-star ratings), but for some reason Command-5 no longer works???
There is nothing wrong with my "5" on my keyboard.
I went to my local Apple Store and spoke to a Genius. He said that there is probably a mistake in the iPhoto code, and that the mistake would only be corrected after someone mentioned to apple the problem.
I would like to find out if there is any way firstly to rectify the problem myself? or alternatively how to get in touch with Apple to let them know there is a problem, so that they can fix it by the next software update.
    Thanks

Ty trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)

  • Bug in LR 3.4 changing folders show not the 1st photo after setting rating filter

    Bug in LR 3.4 ?
In the Library module, I have several folders.
    Folder 1 contains 100 photo's
    Folder 2 contains 100 photo's
After rating the photo's in folder 1 (let say I rated 10 photo's with one star, then I changed the viewing status to Filters - Rated - > 1star) and I get to see the 10 photo's
Then I switch to folder 2 (which has filters off). In stead of beginning with photo 1 (the beginning), it starts the focus on the image wich is no 17 or anyway much higher (i think the photo no of the 1st rated photo in folder 2).
    Has anyone experienced this behaviour?

    Yes,
    folder 1: Filter - Rating > *
    folder 2: Filters OFF
And both are sorted at Capture Time. So when changing from folder 1 (with rating) to folder 2 (without rating) it starts not at the beginning.
I have also a folder 3 without rating (same as folder 2), and if I go from folder 3 to folder 2 it starts at the beginning as it should be.
Also: if have the following setup concerning filters:
    Library Filters: - Lock Filter
Library Filters: - Remember each source's filter separately (so I can change the filter settings on each folder)
    NOTE, I can reproduce it:
It appears that switching from folder 1 to folder2 (as described above) the focus on folder 2 is the first picture with a rating, and NOT the first picture at all. And that is with Filters OFF. Switching from folder 1 to folder 3 (no photos are rated in this folder),it starts at the first photo (as expected).

  • Rating/editing my photos on iPad

Is there any way to manage my photos on my iPad and then synch with iPhoto on my iMac?
I've been sick and in bed and thought it would be good to go through my photos and rate them on my iPad, so I could later go into iPhoto to delete the lower rated photos.  I'm trying to free up space on my iMac, and don't want to sit at my desk for hours going through all of them..... It would be much easier and more comfortable to do it right from my iPad!

    Nobody has a solution here?

  • Showing one rating at a time.

I notice that when viewing by rating (1, 2, 3, stars...) the program defaults to viewing the rating you choose and above.  So, say I want to just see four star photos, it's showing me four and five star photos.  Is there any way to set the rating function to only show those star rated photos I want to see? Or am I using the rating system wrong?  Thanks.
    Daniel

Thank you so much, John.  I think I am needing a larger screen. ;-)
My wife and I realized we needed a larger LCD TV when we keep moving our 19in screen closer and closer to us.  So we upgraded to a 32 in.  The other night I said, "maybe we should move the TV closer."  I guess it's time for both a TV and LCD upgrade.
    Take care,

  • Having difficulty assigning more than one tag to a photo...

I know that you can click more than one tag to a photo, but if I filter for say photos that have no tag, and then assign a tag to that photo, it then is removed from that filter, because it no longer meets the filter's definition - it now has a tag.
For example, I have 200 photos in a file, some with tags and some without tags. I filter for photos that have "No Tag." I see a photo of a bird in a field. I want to assign the tag "bluebird" and "Ellwood Bluffs" to the photo. But when I assign "Bluebird," the photo now disappears, preventing me from assigning the second tag.
    Any suggestions?
    Cliff

    Ramon:
My apologies. Yes, you are correct. I meant to say 200 image files in a folder.
So the second paragraph should read:
"For example, I have 200 images in a folder, some with tags and some without tags. I filter for photos that have "No Tag." One of them is a photo of a bird in a field. I want to assign the tag "bluebird" and "Ellwood Bluffs" to the photo. But when I assign "Bluebird," the photo now disappears, preventing me from assigning the second tag."
I have Bridge for Mac (version 2.1.1.9. I am not rating photos. I am assigning tags, what Bridge calls keywords, so I can search for the photos later using metadata.
    Thanks,
    Cliff

  • Sync albums but only sync 5 star photos in each

I would like to sync only the 5 star photos from each of the albums in my aperture library so that they appear as albums on my iPhone but with only the 5 star photos inside. At the moment I am syncing a single 5 star smart album but it contains 1300 images and it's hard to find what I'm looking for on my iPhone. My photography style is to take lots of photos and choose the best in Aperture. This means I might have an album in Aperture with 300 images in but only 20 that I rate 5 stars. Basically, I want all my albums on my iPhone but with only my 5 star rated photos in each.
    Can anyone help?

Yes, that's an option I've considered. But as with any database, size is inversely proportional to speed - larger database equals slower performance. LR 5 is much better than earlier versions in this regard but when you reach 100,000 images you can feel it.
This is incorrect. I accept that you think the database is getting slower, but the database (and really all databases) are designed to work pretty much the same regardless of the number of records, except for perhaps searching through the entire catalog. We have seen in this forum people who are now editing larger RAW files than a few years ago, they see it is slower, and decide it is the size of the database, rather than the size of their photos.
What aspects of Lightroom are slow? If it's scrolling and displaying the previews and searching, then it might be the database. If its displaying images in the Develop module, it is NOT the database at all.
Have you taken steps to improve the performance of the database, such as Optimizing it regularly? have you tried these performance tips: FAQ: Experiencing Performance related problems in Lightroom?

  • How do I sort all of my photos alphabetically by title?

I need to be able to sort my photos by title. This is critical to my business. I can't find a way to do that. It appears that Photos automatically sorts by date which is problematical when I have 10,000 photos.
I want to be able to sort by:
    title
    date
    rating
    keyword
    location
All of those, not just one or two or those sorting options.
I guess it is too much to ask to have second level options for sorting as well; ie. alphabetically by title and then within that by date (or rating).

Photos doesn't offer those sorting options.  In nearly all modes photos can only be sorted by Date, either Date Added or EXIF Capture Date.  In albums you can sort by date or manually.
The only time I've found the sort by title available is in a folder of albums and it only applies to the sorting of the albums.
I would go back to iPhoto for now.  Add keywords to help in identifying photos as well as titles and descriptions.  Then when iPhoto isn't compatible with the system anymore you can migrate to Photos and have the keywords and description to help search and arrange in groups in albums.
If your photos are critical to your business I'd look into one of the professional DAM (digital asset management) apps that can sort by any feature you can think of.  One such app is Media Pro 1.  I use it as my primary DAM and iPhoto for special projects like books, cards, calendars, slideshows.
You can learn about other DAM apps at  The DAM Forum.

  • Photos not deleting in iPhoto

Photos are not deleting in iPhoto library. When I select a photo and hit delete they photo does not delete and the next photo is highlighted. I've tried to drag photos to the iPhoto trash but that doesn't work either. I was having similar problems when working in the iPhoto library on my Air and had to rebuild the library/thumbnails. It also will not merge two Events together. This was the same problem I had before I rebuilt the library. This worked for a little (an hour) while but am now having the same issues. I am syncronizing my libraries with Chronosync but haven't ran into this problem before. I'm using iPhoto 9.

I am in the process of organizing all my photos (around 24,000), starting to name Faces, merging Events, rating photos, and deleting photos. After I work a while I run into this problem above.

  • Applying star rating/color label to "Current Pick" in Stack View mode

Is it possible to apply a star rating/color label to the "Current Pick" in Stack View Mode? Thanks.

is there a way of applying both the five-star rating, AND the green color label at the same time, with one keyboard shortcut, or otherwise?
If you need to do this in exactly one action, then I don't think there is a way to do this. Of course, if you want to accomplish this in two actions, you can select all the 5 star images, and then apply the Green color label to them all in one step, but that isn't what you asked for.
Is there any way to make my five-star rated photos more visually prominent in the grid view?
    Not that I know of
ANother thought is to create a smart collection of your 5 star images, and then you can use the smart collection to view the 5-star images (none of the other images will appear)

  • I photo Albums Missing

This question was not answered actually, but the powers that be seem to have closed the post, since the person who decided that because I find the Albums feature on iphoto to be ridiculous, or not useful at all when trying to upload organized, titled images from iphoto to other programs such as snapfish, flickr or kodak.
I can not drag the album. I can export, but the album is out of order.
So the question remains, is there anyway to view the photo Albums, in the finder to upload elsewhere?
If not, then I do not see how iphoto can be useful for that purpose. (despite the fact that millions use it). To organize photos by roll, yes, by album no.

Your previous posts were in both the iPhoto 5 and 6 forums. Since you refer to Film Rolls I'm guessing you use v6, although you've started this thread in the v5 forum. It is useful for us to know which version you are using, since there are some differences.
So the question remains, is there anyway to view the photo Albums, in the finder to upload elsewhere?
The answer remains, no there is not.
I can not drag the album.
Correct. The album won't drag from the Source Pane to the Finder. Click on the Album, then select the photos. Selected photos will drag and drop to the Finder and some other applications. You can Select All, or Shift-Click to select the first and last photo of a contiguous group, or Command-Click to select non-consecutive photos.
I can export, but the album is out of order.
An easy way to preserve your album order during export is to check the box in the Export Dialog that says "Rename: use Album Name". Let's say you have an album called "Vacation". The Album name option will name each exported file "Vacation - 01" "Vacation - 02" "Vacation - 03" etc. Since the Finder always lists files in alpha-numeric order, they will be correct in the folder of exports. (Remember to create a New Folder for the exported photos so they aren't mixed in with other files.) Then to upload to snapfish, etc., just select that folder. The order will also be preserved whether you copy that folder to a CD, DVD, or other storage media for use in another computer, printing, or even a digital photo frame.
If you had given your photos descriptive titles and can't bear to lose the titles upon export (the above method will NOT preserve iPhoto titles) there is another way. It takes a little more time, depending on the size of your album. With the album in the order you choose, go through the photos one by one and add a number at the beginning of the title. Be sure to pad the title with the correct number of zeros: for up to 99 photos begin with "01 your title" ; and for up to 999 photos begin with "001 your title". When the titles are all numbered, export the album. This time, check the box in the export dialog for "Rename: use Title". Since your titles are now in alpha-numeric order, they will remain in that order in the Finder.
I hope this gives you some of the answers you seek. There are reasons why iPhoto works this way. The most basic reason is that it is a database, and you are not supposed to access your files from the Finder once you import them into the iPhoto Library. In the iPhoto Help file (v6) under a section titled +"About using the iPhoto Library"+ it says:
*IMPORTANT: There is also an "iPhoto Library" folder located in the Pictures folder in your home folder, outside the iPhoto application. If you move, delete, rename, or otherwise touch files or folders within this folder, you may be unable to see your pictures in the iPhoto application.*
    and
*The files within this folder should only be manipulated by a customer care representative.*
By digging into that folder from the Finder, even to upload your photos to a website, you risk damaging your entire iPhoto database. Your photos will be safe, but you could cause iPhoto to forget where they are located. It's best to stay out of that folder completely and access your photos from iPhoto itself.
There is no representation of iPhoto albums in the Finder, because albums exist only inside the iPhoto database file. Your photos are stored based on import date (version 5) or Film rolls (v6 and v7). From v6 Help:
*Your photos aren't actually stored within each album, slideshow, and book; instead, these contain references to the photo files stored in the iPhoto Library folder. This way, you can add the same photo to several different albums, slideshows, books, calendars, or cards without actually duplicating the image file.*
This is what makes iPhoto such a powerful organizer. Albums are completely flexible and use very little disk space whatsoever. You could take a family reunion photo of 20 people, and place it inside an album for each person - without wasting any space. But you can't access your albums from the Finder.
If not, then I do not see how iphoto can be useful for that purpose.
People use iPhoto's different features in numerous different ways. Some people like to use albums to organize their entire libraries. I do not. I like to organize my Library by Film Roll, and my primary choice for viewing is by film rolls. I keep my photos grouped chronologically, with a few exceptions (I have one Roll just for Movie clips). I use the comments section to list the contents of each roll so that I can scroll through my library with the rolls closed and comments showing. That helps me know where to find a particular photo. Just after importing I go through and keyword the new photos. I don't have an album for each member of my family, because I can locate them quickly using the keywords. I don't use chronological albums, because I can use the calendar tool to find photos by date.
For me, albums are useful for special projects. I use them to gather and prepare a group of photos for printing or uploading. I use them when I'm working on a movie, since albums are easy to locate from the Media Pane of iMovie and iDVD. I have a few Smart Albums for collecting the highest rated photos from a specific date (best of birthday, etc). Most of them I save, in case I want to reproduce the project, but sometimes I create an album, export, then delete.
Here's one final example. A relative of mine died suddenly and completely unexpectedly. Prior to her memorial service, I went through my entire library and placed all my photos of her into an album. From there I weeded out the duds, then edited the rest. Some I opened via iPhoto into Photoshop Elements for more "heavy duty" editing, some I just cropped in iPhoto. I printed the album and created a little book to share with her loved ones. Her daughter liked it, so I gave it to her at the service. Since I still have the album, I can easily print out another set of the photos for myself or other family members. That project could have been very difficult, but with iPhoto's tools it only took a few hours, and the bulk of that time was spent editing my photos.
The tools are there. Hopefully as you come to understand how iPhoto works you'll find the way to use it that suits you best.
    Regards.

  • Importing lots of photos from Bridge?

I used Bridge to rate photos inside a folder containing hundreds of photos, and then I filtered/sorted the photos in Bridge based on the rating so only those rated photos showed. How can I now import just those photos into Premiere CS6? When I try to select all of the filtered photos and bring them into CS6 it does not let me, I have to drag each photo one at a time. Is there a better way of doing this?
    Thanks in advance.

In Bridge, filter to show only the rated pix.
Open Premiere and drag the pix displayed in Bridge into PP Project Panel.
    Or...
PP > File > Browse in Bridge > Filter as above.
