Ratings of photos

In the previous catalog I was using I could create fields. I used two fields for quality. One related to the intrinsic quality of the subject and the second to the quality of the photo itself. In other words, a picture of the Eifel tower might have to qualify as high on subject value even if its photo quality was not so high if it was the best I had. Or even more striking is your child's first steps. You grabbed the camera and snapped but no one will give you an A for the photo quality but it's still an A photo. So if you wanted to select photos of your child, you would probably want to include it even if you couldn't rate it 5* on quality.
Or do people use the stars as a kind of combination of subject importance and photo quality?
I'm thinking of using color labels for one of these categories.
I take it both rating and label are stored in the XMP. Even though we've learned that Lightroom Metadata may not be accessible by other programs because it's in XMP rather than IPTC or EXIF etc. Until export. Hum. Is XMP exported when you export as well as IPTC, EXIF etc? I'm trying to figure out if I'm going to lose ratings and labels when I go on to another program.
My previous catalog program can export its info but I don't know whether I will take the trouble to learn SQLite well enough to import the information... Lightroom doesn't even have a way to export image name and metadata, right? I'm just thinking down the road and trying to maximize what I go away with when I decide some other product is what I want to use.

I use star ratings as a combination of "artistic" quality, technical quality and importance. Not ideal but it seems to work for me. I usually find the pics I want. I don't use colour coding. Flags are used for picking photos to print/ for slide shows and web.
My "problem" is however, that I've allways used one star for the best and 5 for the worst. LR can handle this as well but it's easier in LR to use 5 stars for the best photos and 1 for the worst. Would like to change to this, but recoding +15,000 photos doesn't really appeal to me. Does anyone know of a way to do this automatically?

  • Star ratings for photos?

I see they improved the photo app a little but I can't find a way to do star ratings like in iPhoto.  Am I missing something or did they leave the feature out (again)?

    No. Not sure why.....
I use Sort Shots for this and some other stuff.
Also, there are other apps that allow this but not in conjunction with the standard photo app. (I don't think)

  • Bridge: ratings for photos

Somehow I accidentally hit a key that put a "rating" on my
photo (stars at the bottom) and I did this before without knowing and it said something
in red letters noting it was a rejected picture, which it wasn't and each one I clicked on to view larger kept getting the Rejected notation.
I could not find how to get rid of that. How does one change or delete the "rating" in Bridge?

In Bridge click on Lables in toolbar and make the changes you want.

  • "Unrated or better" shows no photos in browser after Lion upgrade

After upgrading to Lion I have found my Aperture library isnt working as it used to.  At first I thought I lost all of my photos, but am able to reveal them in my library under photos, but not within the projects.
If I click into a project say "Wedding" I cant see any photos in my browser, If I hover my cursor over the project name it shows "Wedding - 909 versions".
The filter selected (default) is "Unrated or Better" and this shows up no photos. Many of the photos in the album have no rating, some have 2, 3, 4, 5 stars.
If I select "Show all" everything becomes visible.  If I select "* * * * or better" then my photos 4 stars or better show.
I have the same problem across all of my projects and albums.
I have found that if I add or change the ratings of photos, or import new photos that they are not affected by this problem.
It looks to be a problem with unrated photos not being recognised as photos without a rating.
Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? or do I need to restore my library from backup (rather not as my library is 100GB)
    Thanks!

Have you found an answer to this problem? This started happening to me as well and like you I thought I had lost most of my photos.
    Anyone else found a fix?

  • Lightroom Library Grid Mode - Uncommanded Ratings Changes and System Crash

I have Lightroom 5.  When I am in Library Mode and Grid view with a rating filter set, I get the following:
On multiple occasions, when the mouse is in the vicinity of the "set Rating" stars, the existing ratings of photos in the grid start changing one after the other for no reason (no mouse clicks).
When I try to use the Undo command to restore the correct prior rating,. Lightroom ALWAYS crashes and shutsdown.
    Has anyone seen this before?

Are you using a Bluetooth mouse? My Apple Magic Mouse sometimes scrolls by itself for a few instants after I click on something. By that I mean that if I move it sideways or up and down, without having my fingers on its top, it acts as if I had swiped my finger on its active surface. If this happens while your cursor is on or near the ratings field, it may act as if you were changing the rating on purpose? Of course, this is just a guess, as you did not state your OS or hardware.

  • Star ratings in Bridge, contact sheet in InDesign

If i add star ratings to photos in Bridge, can I include them in my InDesign contact sheet using Tools>Indesign?

    Hi DeNoveau,
I was struggling with this same issue. I found a solution that is somewhat helpful. Not ideal but better than nothing.
    1. Create the InDesign contact sheet as you normally would.
    2. Choose Window > Automation > Scripts
    3. In the Javascript folder, find LabelGraphics.jsx
    4. In the panel that comes up, choose File Path
That should do it. As I said, not ideal but better than nothing.

  • What's is the best way to use iPhoto? I need to understand.

What's is the best way to use iPhoto? I need to understand.
I guess the iPhoto is only for people with 5,000 of personal photos.
Or even 200,000, but they can't use this app everyday.
I'm not talk about working as a photographer. They use Aperture.
They may use iPhoto like a family album that you take a look sometimes.
And don't care about putting photos from the camera or from internet everyday.
I have tons of music and I love iTunes 8, works great. So I tried but I can't stand iPhoto anymore.
I have over 173,000 photos. My goal is organize, have total control, crop in Preview and delete them fast as I can.
The iPhoto is too slow. And is not only about performance, more RAM... but the whole concept.
Finder is much better/richer/flexible to organize than iPhoto.
I'm not talking about the photographer workflow.
And I'm not talking about editing and all these great photo features, the search, and all the iLife environment. They are amazing.
When I'm iPhoto, I feel like a prisioner.
I can't open an album/folder/event alone just to take a look, without do lanch the iPhoto app with the all thousand photos together. And it's slow.
I can't use Quick Look there.
So, I'll use Finder for manage/crop/etc. But what's the best way to use iPhoto in my case? Put the best/key ones there to use in iLife/MobileMe? To do a more serious editing? I like the features: keywords/ratings/hidden photos/events... It would be cool this features in Finder.
    For example:
iMovie: Manage movies? NO. It's editng only.
iTunes: Manage music/small video/podcast...? OK. Editing the song? OK for tags/convert/artwork/equalizer... For music there's a GarageBand of course.
iPhoto: Manage photos? Yes and No.
I think Finder would kill iPhoto incoporating all the editing features in Preview and the rich manage in Finder.
Jobs said that no one care about iDVD anymore. They care about the web.
Using iMovie to export to MobileMe.
Maybe iPhoto become less important in a near future. With a better Finder+Preview Right?
Sorry for this long text with a short question.
    Thanks.

Your post demonstrates exactly why I keep saying that iPhoto is not the application for you.
It would be better an iPhoto organizing photos by words like when iTunes browse his music.
Why on earth would anyone want to organise photos by words? A list mode is entirely pointless in a Photo application. That's like having an old photo album organised with the photos facing inwards so you can read the back of the picture.
Again, this is a characteristic of a File browser. You don't want a Photo organiser, you want a file organiser.
And, in iPhoto, you can search by tags, effortlessly in either the search box or by using a Smart Album.
iPhoto always loads all that events and all the thumbs library to scroll, and I think it's overkill.
So, how is iPhoto to know which ones you want to work with today? Open a library, get the Library.
Would be better a Cover Flow option to browsing in Events.
You've obviously never tried scrubbing along the Event icon.
Imagine iTunes using Cover Flow mode all the time. It won't be too useful.
Many, many people do, including myself on a library of 20k tracks totalling more that 100 gigs, and find it very useful. Same with the Finder.
And if when iTunes Store starts to sell photos?
Why on earth would the iTunes store start to sell photos?
    My photos are not junk,
I didn't say there were. Read my post again.
When I said Finder to crop photos I mean Preview. But I feel in Finder. Because what's in Preview? A photo opened with a Preview's menubar and some cocoa APIs like adjustments. Not?
Oh, so you don't count Preview as an application. Fine. It is an application but you don't feel it. As you wish.
My point to you is very simple: Because of the way you want to organise your pics - using lists views and so on - iPhoto is not the application for you. Don't use it. But you keep writing things about the application that are untrue, and I'm aware that other folks search these forums and I don't want them to have inaccurate information about iPhoto.

  • How do I find the file size of an album in iPhoto

I'm a iMac newbie and I need your help! I need to determine how large an album is in iPhoto so I can figure out how big of a thumb drive I need to store these pictures for my digital frame. On my PC I would just right click on the file. That obviously doesn't work here. I saw a similar question in the forum that said to go to the Photos menu, but my only options there are: Adjust date and time, batch change, rotate clockwise, rotate counterclockwise, my ratings, edit photo, flag photo, hide photo, detect missing faces, duplicate and delete.
Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Select the album, Select all photos in the album, then click on the info button.   Number of photos and total size are on  top of info pane.

  • Lightroom 5.7 problem after installing Creative Cloud Photoshop 2014 Trial.

My Lightroom was working fine earlier today. However I wanted to edit some photos from my new Fuji x100T in Photoshop. When I tried to go into my CC 5 Photoshop, it wouldn't load the photos because my Camera Raw Plug-In wasn't up to date and when I tried to update it, it wouldn't update it for CC5 past the version I already had which is 6.7. So I broke down and downloaded the Photoshop CC 2014 trial so I would have the most recent Camera Raw Plug In. After installing it, I tried to open Lightroom and got the message: "Configuration Error. Pleas uninstall and reinstall the product. If this problem still occurs, please contact Adobe technical support for help and mention Error 5. I have never had to uninstall a Lightroom version to be able to install an upgrade and I am concerned about losing information (presets, ratings,Maybe photos) if I do. Not sure why I am getting this message for a program which was working perfectly up to the moment I installed the CC Photoshop Trial. Help! I have work I need to do in Lightroom (and Photoshop) tonight and it is a big problem that I can't use Lightroom.

    Hi Jeff,
    Thank you for your reply.
No, I am not using Windows. I’m using Yosemite 10.10.2 on a MacBook Pro.
I ended up trashing (There was no “Uninstall" option) my old Lightroom (which was 5.7), reinstalling Lightroom 5 and then upgrading it to 5.7. Now seem to be working alright.
I uninstalled Creative Cloud 6 and went back to using CS5, using Lightroom to render the files, since I can’t use the latest Camera Raw versions with CS5, so I could work on them in Photoshop. Not an ideal solution. I wouldn’t mind upgrading to CC6 but not if it messes up everything else.
Quite honestly, I don’t understand why an Adobe user should have to depend on other Adobe customers for answers about Adobe problems. Adobe should have a strong customer support group to handle these problems, particularly when they are caused by Adobe. I have been an Adobe customer for at least 10 years. I like the products but the customer support needs to be improved. Apple does a better job.

  • Lightroom Mobile sync  and 2 computers

    Hi All,
I've looked but I can't see a specific answer to this question, so I thought I'd make it my first posting.
I've just subscribed to Creative Cloud for Lightroom. I liked the idea of being able to sync different devices and continue work whilst I'm out, but I made a massive assumption that, I think, turns out not to be correct.
I thought that once I had synchronised a collection with the cloud, I could access it on my mobile device. This is true, and works well.
But, I also thought that if I had a 2nd computer with Lightroom on, it could also be used to work on the synchronised collection. It turns out that this isn't the case.
It seems such an obvious use case to me, especially given that when you subscribe to Creative Cloud, you can use Lightroom on 2 machines.
    Here's my situation.
I have a Mac Pro in the house which is the main work station. I have a MacBook Air, I use when I'm out and about. I want to be able to use the MBA to at least do my "picks" when I'm travelling. I know I can use my iPhone/iPad for that, but the screen on the MBA is so much better, plus if I really wanted to, I could do a bit of developing on the MBA (I don't really see myself ever doing it on a Mobile device).
Am I missing something? Is there a way to get Lightroom on my MBA to see the 'Mobile' version of the collection the iPhone can see?
    Rob.

You can't do this using the normal desktop Lightroom application on your laptop, but what you can do is use Lightroom Web via your browser on any computer.
So on the MBA, go into your browser and log into your Adobe account at https://lightroom.adobe.com/. You can then:
use the P, U, X keyboard shortcuts to add pick flags
use numbers 0-5 to add ratings
    remove photos from collections
let others see a collection by making it public, sharing to FB etc, giving them the Adobe URL
add new originals to LrMobile by dragging them from the laptop's folders and dropping them in the browser - the newly uploaded file will be automatically added to your main catalogue. Try this, it's got lots of potential uses.
What you can't do is email individual pictures from the browser (unless I overlooked something) and you can't do any Develop work.

  • Hi,  Im using photoshop elements 12.  Having an issue with organizer.

When I select the people tab, I do not see my people in stacks.  -- I have identified the people in my photos.
Now whe I got to the upper right corner and select one or more stars in the ratings, the photos then appear stacked by person.
why does this occur.  Can I fix so that the phtos appear even when i do not select a rating.

Moving this discussion to the Photoshop Lightroom forum.

  • Semi - Smart Albums - all I want is to update iPhoto every time I add a new

after reading the iPhoto Help files descriptions of Standard and Smart - Im after Semi - Smart.
Standard: You can also create an album by dragging a folder of photos from the Finder into an empty part of iPhoto's Source list. iPhoto creates an album with the folder's name and imports all photos contained in the folder.
    - but what iPhoto 6 wont do is automatically update itself every time I add a new pic into the source folder.
Smart Folder: "You can make a Smart Album that contains only certain types of photos, photos with high ratings, or photos that match other criteria, including EXIF information, such as a specific shutter speed or camera model....
iPhoto automatically modifies a Smart Album when any photo that matches the album's settings is added to or removed from your library."
but what iPhoto 6 wont do is to simply capture the folder name as Ive named it in my source folder structure.
    So Im after:
    a. drag a folder ( for example, cars, gemstones, Klimit art) into the iPhoto source pane, it becomes a semi-smart folder in that it watches every new change I make to the source files on my computer. I add a file, iPhoto 6 adds it. I delete one, it deletes it. I mod it - you get the game here.
Do I need to upgrade iPhoto to handle this rudimentary task ? Seems like this action would be built in - am I missing something here ?
    TIA

will try that out, thanks for the tip.
Who would want to have to use Automator or Applescript to make such a rudimentary function enabled within iPhoto ? I would guess 95% of Mac users never use those things. The whole point of Mac is to keep your life from having to descend into mundane technical details, thus freeing one for more time with life's higher level tasks. This should be basic from-day-one type behavior in any photo app.
Will chime back in on how difficult it get iPhoto to auto-update itself with every new pic I add/subtract to these watched folders.

  • Storing presentations in Aperture?

can anyone give me a little advice as to how to manage "presentations" on the Mac and in Aperture?
i have gotten started with putting together little "slideshows" in Aperture that i can also post to something like Vimeo on the web and I have also done a more formal KEYNOTE presentations. i also have pdf versions of this which i 'digitally printed' but i now know that Aperture does not like multi page pdf files.
so in addition to .key files that i cannot seem to import into Aperture i am also noticing that i have .avi and .mov and 3gp file types as well that are already in Aperture.
    three questions:
    1. is there a "best" way to handle the avi or mov or 3gp files such as exorting them and then re-importing as some kind of mac "standard" file type?
    2. can i get the keynote presentations into aperture or do these have to stay in a folder in finder somewhere?
    3. any other advice on organizing this sort of "presentation data" on the mac?
THANKS for any help on this.
    Jon

Well, different strokes for different folks. I prefer to manage my photos; I don't care for the "inbuilt" management. I don't want (actually can't stand) "events", "projects", "dates", "faces", or whatever is the default. I don't need tags. I don't want "ratings" - my photos are either worth keeping or they're not. I can find my Columbia river gorge trip photos in a folder I created and appropriately named "Gorge 2012". So, as long as I can remember that I was in the gorge    , I can find the pictures, LOL
I can search for camera type, resolution, place, subject, even my custom tags, like height of the sun over the horizon and define smart albums and web pages based on these rules.
Great for you if you need that - I have no need for it.
And Aperture keeps track of the different versions of any image and stores them economically. I do not have to waste diskspace on different versions of the same image by creating duplicates.
Again, I don't have a need for that because I don't keep more than one photo. It is either the original or a digitally enhanced version - whichever I like best is the one that is kept.
The only exception would be my artwork creations, but those are not photos - I will keep my original background for instance because I may use that again in another project (i.e. the birthday card I created for baltwo).
    @ Terence:
Wouldn't it just be easier to use an app designed for the work you do? Elements? Acorn? Pixelmator? Graphic Converter?
I may use one or more/all of the following with one photo (depending on what I will be using the photo for): Graphic Converter, PS Elements, Image Tricks, Aperture, Digital Photo Professional, Swift Publisher and Photo to Movie. I will also use Photos while making a movie (as a background, for video layering, etc with FCE, LiveType, iMovie HD, the new iMovie and iDVD). I've experienced very little loss since I won't save as a .jpg until I'm done working on it.
FWIW, I believe we had a similar conversation some time ago; I simply want and use folders for my photos: "gorge 2012". I don't want it cross referenced, places, faces, dates, or whatever - just a container (folder) holding those particular photos. I find it much easier to deal with that than having to worry about a previous/future/incompatible library version. I control my Photos folder and can drag a copy of it anywhere I like.
I actually tried iPhoto some time ago and became completely frustrated at the flashing/moving dates "2010", "2011", etc while scrolling and trying to find a photo. I prefer a filing cabinet type filing system: alphabetically arranged folders containing appropriately named pics. I also use column view (never icon view). I never did find what I was looking for in iPhoto - until I went to my folder to find it.
As for keeping all materials in one folder while working on a movie project: since my sources are from half a dozen different people besides myself, I do not want any of those photos or video clips permanently - once I'm done with the movie, they will be deleted (there will be about 300 GB worth of files accumulated). It is therefore much easier for me to keep all of them in one folder (after I've catalogued them, weeded out what I don't want, enhanced others, etc - in other words, once they're the right size, look good, and ready to use). I'm dealing with photo sizes from 480 x 319 to 1920 x 1080 (and video in 720p and 1080p) and I have to find ways to incorporate them all and make the whole thing look good. And, when the movie is done and 20 - 40 copies burnt, the entire movie project folder is Toast (pun intended)
As I said, different strokes for different folks - my system works for me whereas iPhoto's, Aperture's, et al does not.
