Rattling noise from CD Rom area

I have an iMac  Desktop (21.5-inch, Mid 2011), a year ago it started making an intermittent  rattling noise,  it appears it comes from the cd-rom area, now is turn into a continuous noise, theres no CD Rom inserted, any ideas?, thanks in advance

My question is why are you leaving it on Standby/Hybernate for extended time periods instead of shutting it down?

i hear a rattling noise from my iPhone 5i f I shake it slightly. This is a replaced handset, the previous iphone also had a flaw. The people at apple say that it is normal but there was no such noise in the previous one

I would recommend an Apple Store visit because you should hear nothing when you shake an iphone, they are build with little to no moving parts and more than likely that sound is from a hardware defect.

  • Iphone 5 makes a rattling noise from day 1, the replacement also makes this similar noise. customer care can provide me with another replacement but can not promise if the new replacement will have this noise or not. can i get a refund ?

my iphone 5 from day one makes a rattling noise when you shake the device.
the replacement i recieved also makes the similar rattling noise, apple calls it a "common problem" and says its the autofocus of the camera which makes the noise, but people i know are not experiencing any such noise in their evices, hence its not their in all the iphone.
honestly investing Rs 45000 in india i dont expect my device to have a stupid defect as this one,
In my latest conversation i have had with a senior representative of apple care iv been given an option to have anpther replacement but they cant promise me that the new replacemnt will have no such rattling noise it might be even worse.
since apple cant promise me a replacement without any such noise and my device is not even 90 days old, and since apple calls it a common problem in iphone5 is it possible that they give me replacement of 5c or 5s and il pay the difference in price or just have a refund ? since they cant provide me with a solution and keeping this device with this defect is not a solution with me.

Sorry if it's over 14 days apple does not refund the device, just sit tight and keep on asking for a device that doesn't rattle, be firm but polite about your position on the matter.

  • T61 Display Problem and Annoying Noise from ESC button area

I have two problems with my T61, model 6460-66U. One's with display and another is annoying noise coming from ESC button area.
Ordered in Feb, 2008 for college use, as soon as I start to use it there's some problem with the display quality. When using Aero there would be black square spots appearing on screen and would disappear when hovering mouse over these areas. Processing speed is somewhat slow when using Aero. While switching to Basic Vista style, those black square spots will only appear in the Windows Photo Gallery's left corner, like the image shows: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3149/2746362257_6dc6a4d6a2_o.jpg  When playing videos, like avi, rmvb, wmv files, there's a common problem that the screen in the media player keeps flashing with the green color. I thought it was the RAM, because it's 1G so it got upgraded to 3G over summer break. Hoping the problem would be solved, but not . Recover the system back to factory status helps a little, but after upgrading the newest driver (7.15.11.7597) of Nvidia 140m there would be sudden black out on screen, and notice of display driver stopped working. When degrade to 7.15.11.129 version it runs fairly well but problem with Photo Gallery and videos as mentioned above still exist. I found a Korean media player which could fix the video playing problem, but with Windows Media player, Realplayer and other major video player the problem still exists. Screenshot of the problem is here http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3087/2746362307_aff12c556c_o.jpg  I upgraded BIOS, but laptop would become slow and video images would blur/double shadows. So I swtiched it back.
And recent few days, there's annoying noise coming from in the upper left corner, where ESC button is. I don't know whether it's from the fan or the AC adapter, it's like Zssssss, and if I press my finger on it, the noise would be a little louder. There's a similar problem that I noticed in the first few weeks with the experience of this laptop, whenever I maximize the volume (both volume control of computer and the music player), some annoying noise, which is similar to this Zsss sound but louder will buzzing along with music. Didn't care much about that since if I don't maximize the volume it would just be fine. But this time the whining noise won't disappear. What probably cause this?  Anyway to fix it, like replacing certain parts??
Suggessions and help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!!

Dirt can get under the button in an instant.
I use a strong suction vacuum cleaner and tip the computer from side to side and upside down while clicking the button to suck out the dirt.

  • GE70 2PE Buzzlike noise from Fan/CPU area

Greetings fellow dragon army. My newly bought(been 3 weeks or so) has started to create excessive buzzlike noise from the fan as if theres a little string hitting the fan while its working especially when turbo boost is on making it very very annoying but also making me troubled. I've not hit the laptop to any surfice and theres no problem whatsoever affecting the performence at all. Any ideas what might cause this?
Thank you for your replies, Have a good day.
    Best regards, Berkcan.

this could be a defect fan where fan is spinning right but making a noise unless it's from speakers.

  • Noise coming from sim tray area.

I have an iPad 2 wifi+3g and check the sim tray to make sure it had a sim card in it.  Now I'm noticing a slight rattling sound coming from that area.  Maybe it was always there i'm not sure.  Has anyone else noticed that and do I have a serious problem?

    Hi,
My iPad 2 3G is making the Same Noise. I figured out, where the noise is coming from.
It's not the SIM Card or tray, it's the mechanism to open the Slot. Put the tool or a paper clip in this little hole and shake your iPad again. The rattling noise will be away.

  • My ears are ringing from blast of white noise from Logic 9

NEVER had this happen in Logic 8 (or any other software for that matter) on same hardware.. Not only can you not OPEN Logic 9 by clicking on a logic 9 file, SAVE in Logic 9 without it putting audio out of sync, now I discover you cannot RECORD for more than a few minutes without getting a blast of white noise. Seriously, my ears are still ringing 8 hours later from this noise. If they are still ringing Monday I am going to the hearing specialist and Apple WILL be paying the bill. I pray no serious damage has been done and that I will still be able to do mastering work. If I monitor through Logic, even at 128 the monitored audio will occasionally slip out of sync and there will be like a 2 second delay in the monitored audio, then eventually a deafening blast of white noise. To release software in this untested state is totally negligent, irresponsible and downright dangerous. Disgraceful.

had this happen yesterday. at least we could SEE it in the waveform and turned down to check it. no reason at all to get it, but it just decided to do it.
BTW, i used to have this happen to me in L7 and L8 sporadically after a few mins of recording on the same track, never did understand the reason behind it.
Right, it's not new to Logic 9.
I always thought this may happen when either... (pick one or any combination thereof)
    1. A drive was asleep (not necessarily the recording drive) and wakes up.
    2. The OS starts writing a swap file to the system drive.
    3. Journaling kicks in to record changes in the disk structure.
I turn Journaling off on any audio drives.

  • New PB 15" emits static noise from keyboard area

Immediately after purchasing a new 15" PB there is a low crackle/popping noise coming from the keyboard area when the machine is on. It is loud enough to be heard from 5-8' away when working in a relatively quite work environment. The sound is also muted so I know that isnt' it.
Spent an hour on the phone with applecare and they have had my PB since Monday morning with the 'Hold - Engineering' note pasted on the support website.
    Has anyone had similar problems?

I myself have a titanium and a G5 (and have tested other aluminum powerbooks) that exhibit this behavior when the following conditions are met:
previewing movies or audio in the Finder
firewire or pcmcia soundcard attached and being used
some applications cause this to be louder. it is more noticable when the processor performance is set to "highest" in the energy saver control panel.
since you have a newer 'book, and there is no processor performance drop-down, i am curious about this. i have found it to be more noticeable on the aluminum powerbooks actually. probably just because the G5 is sitting under my desk as oppossed to in front me.
just look around the forums for the word "sizzle" and you will read more about it. From my understanding this is standard and the noise is caused by the processor napping. Most people who are annoyed by this have installed CHUD (from Apple developer tools) to turn off processor napping. This makes the noise go away but it also does not sleep the processor. This shorten battery life and the fans to go on sooner since the powerbook runs hotter with this off.

MSI z77A-G43 C1E enabled and strange noise from cpu area ? What will be the problem? When I disabled it there is no sound. BUt when I enabled it there is a strange noise while moving my mouse cursor or when there is some CPU activity, sounds like a squeeking or scratching, a bit like hdd activity, but barely noticeable. It looks like it's coming from the area around the cpu socket, must be something on the motherboard. is there a solution other than just disabling it? I want to be able to make C1E enable but cant bare this noise so I have to turn it of....

Sound like some electrical sound produced by current going through that area.

  • N8 - Rattling noise when listening with headphones

Just got my N8 but unfortunately noticed a slight but annoying rattling noise when listening to music via earphones. It's most noticeable at the start and the end of songs as well as in quieter passages.
Anyone else noticed this? If this is a known issue and fixable via firmware update I won't bother but I'm afraid it's hardware related. Already tried different headphones and reset the device but that didn't help.
Is there anything else I can do that might fix the problem? Thanks!

hi,i'm Hafiz from Malaysia.i'm having EXACTLY the same prob with my new N8's earphone.it's so frustrating that the controller of my earphone unit,is not working at all! The moment i connect the earphone to my lovely N8, the only projected sound appears is full with distortion, incomplete like voice cancellation function is on, and not entertaining at all. I ENABLE THE LOUDNESS AND STEREO WIDENING FUNCTIONS, then it sounds better but the quality is far behind than my previous N70, N73 and N95. To make it even worse, all buttons are NOt functiining at all - volume, fast/rewind, stop etc. I even take off and reconnect the earphone thousand times but it fails to function as what its supposed to be. I went to the outlet where i bought this remarkable hp,unfortunately it was hopeless. The retailer even reformatted my phone's C drive, it failed to overcome my earphone issue. The retailer tried to use and replace with a new earphone set, again it was a failure. Other than that,my N8 functions as what have been promoted. I tried with other earphones and the result was just the same, POOR SOUND QUALITY! Please settle this SIMPLE prob a.s.a.p as it really makes feel uncomfortable and sad of getting 'incomplete' set of N8.

  • Noise from hard disk

    Hi, everyone.
I bought a new mackbook pro in this Jan. Recently, I hear some not continuously noise from hard disk, especially when i open a file in hard disk or verify the hard disk. Is something wrong with my hard disk?
    Thanks

This hard disk clicking is a know problem for many laptops. If you search it on Google, you will find a lot of discussions about it in the Unbuntu Linux forums. In most cases, it is due to the Advanced Power Management (APM) feature of notebook hard drives. The default APM settings of these drives are aggressive so as to extend notebook battery life. As a consequence, the HD tries to park its actuator head to the ramp whenever it judges the system as idle. However, OS X or some third-party applications may access the hard disk quite often, resulting in a park/unpark cycle every few seconds.
Every of these cycles is counted as one load/unload cycle. Most notebook drives support up to 600,000 load/unload cycles. If a hard drive parks its head every few seconds, it may shorten its life by "using up" the cycles more quickly.
I had the same problem on my Powerbook with a Hitachi Travelstar 5K160 80GB PATA drive. I heard the frequent clicking sound right after I installed it into the laptop. The SMART status appeared to be Verified, and there was no problem with the drive itself. After searching on Google and Hitachi web site, I found the causes and solved the problem using the Hitachi Feature Tool. For other HD brands, I have no experience at all.
Basically, Travelstar 5K160 drives have three idle modes, from which a user can set one as the deepest idle state:
    1) Active Idle: the actuator head is parked near the center of the disk, and power usage is 45-55% less than performance level. Recovery time to active mode is about 20ms.
    2) Low Power Idle: this is usually the factory default idle mode. The head is UNLOADED to the ramp and the power consumption is 60-65% less than the performance level. Recovery time is about 300ms.
    3) Low RPM idle: in this idle mode, the hard disk will spin down to a lower RPM speed. More power is saved but recovery time is much longer. (I can hear the disk spin down and spin up again a few times per minute. There is also a lag in system reaction time.)
To get rid of the hard disk clicking, you need to set Active Idle as the deepest APM idle mode. To do it on a Hitachi hard disk, you need Hitachi Feature Tool, and a Windows laptop with the same HD interface as your drive (PATA or SATA). Sadly, the feature tool is only for Windows and Linux.
You can download Hitachi Feature Tool 2.10 as an ISO image here: http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#FeatureTool and burn it into a bootable CD. The userguide of the tool is available on the same page.
Then, take out your hard drive from your Macbook and install it into a Windows laptop. Boot the machine using the Feature Tool bootable CD. Choose "Change Advanced Power Mode" from the drop-down menu.
The default value is 128 (Low Power Idle). Just increase the value toward Performance, until you see the APM mode over the value bar becomes Active Idle (starting from 192). Click OK and Exit the feature tool. Switch off the Windows laptop and take out the hard disk. Install it into your Macbook. You will not hear the clicking sound again when system is idle. The lowest APM mode will be Active Idle and hence the drive will not park its head to the ramp during operions.
If your hard drive is a Hitachi Travelstar 5K160, you can find the 5K160 specifications version 1.1 from Hitachi web site. On page 69 of the document, it explains the APM idle modes. On page 145 about the register values of the APM modes.
To set Active Idle as the deepest idle mode may adversely affect battery life. (I haven't yet tested it myself) However, there seem not to be a big difference than the Low Power Idle, according to the datasheet of 5K160. For this model, power consumption of Active Idle is 0.8W, while that of Low Power Idle is 0.6W, on average.
    Hope this is helpful.
