Superdrive making clicking noise when my Macbook Pro is lifted

Hello all,
I recently had my New 13.3 in. Macbook Pro displayed replaced and now when I lift the Macbook, the superdrive makes a clicking noise similar to the sound when a dvd-rom can't read a disc. There is no dvd in the drive during this time. I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing this problem with their Macbook Pro.
I have another question, when I received my macbook with the replaced display, the display had several patches of dirt and an line scratch underneath the screen. Will apple replace the screen for me again or is it possible to have the entire macbook replaced? This is very frustrating to have to send in my brand new macbook for repairs twice in one month...

External Monitor RGB Noise Flickering with MacBook Pro

Hi folks,
I recently bought a MacBook Pro and plugged into it an HDMI converter to DVI, so I can plug into the MBP the LCD Apple Cinema Display of 22" and have 2 monitors working or, just one while using the hardware of the MBP.
The MBP has 8 GB of RAM of 1333 MHz and an additional ATI video card of 1 GB.
So, when working with the Apple Cinema Display plugged into the MBP, some kind of fast graphic anomaly occurs, which looks like an RGB noise. And that happens in a blink, each about 5 to 10 minutes and only in the Apple Cinema Display.
I'm wondering why happens this, because I need the big screen to work. Also, the MBP costs me a lot of money (US $4000 because I live in Argentina) and we don't have here the easiness to go and buy another or change the product because of a "just in case" thing due many other implications from the actual government.
So please, let me know why this happens and if it's dangerous. I don't wish my hardware get broke because I use it to work an there are no replacements here.

I ended up buying the HDMI cable and adapter for the mac and the screen quality is GREAT! It auto sets itself to 1080p. Don't use VGA. Get the HDMI cable and adapter.
Again, the horizontal lines are from me taking a picture of my monitor from my iphone.

Strange noise from my macbook pro 13" retina

Hi everyone,
I got a problem with my new macbook pro retina 13"... I bought it last week and I already got problems with it!
When I'm using it, I can hear sometimes strange noises. I made a video showing from where the sound is from and you can hear this noise.

The strangest thing is that the only parts in this computer that are moving are the fans and it doesn't seem to be the fans causing this sound (it would be more regular).

In light of the age of the MBP, I suggest you pack it up and go to the Apple store and return/exchange it for a new one. Problem solved!

Bizarre 'processing' noise from within Macbook Pro retina 15"

Hi all,
For the last few months I have been hearing noises that I can only describe as reminiscant of a Spectrum zx or commodore loading screen coming from within my laptop. It is not constant, but can last from minutes, to hours on sporadic occassions. The sound is fairly slight, but when working or generally browsing the internet in a quiet environment, the sound is unavoidable and somewhat annoying.
I have had odd noises coming from this laptop before. My right fan was faulty and it produced squeeking noises. An indepth Genius bar diagnostic testified the error and a replacement fan was fitted. But this noise is different. The hardware test shows no faults. I have attached a video to help aid my description.
I am still within my one year warranty, but, having mentioned earlier, I have already had replacement fans fitted (and the apple staff scratched my retina display so they ordered a new screen as well whilst it was in for repair). I have also noticed some dead pixels in the new screen.
Is there any suggestions as to what this sound could be? Would a Genius bar appointment be necessary and could I get another repair considering I've already had one?
Having said all this, I hardly use my MBP for anything substantial, literally, browsing the internet up to now and I really take care of this machine. The big projects I initially purchased the laptop for are still in development - so it hasnt even been put through its paces.
A bit gutted overall & I think I am going to have to purchase the extended Applecare.

Extreme fan noise on Retina Macbook Pro "15 2012

My Macbook runs very loud without intensive apps open when I connect it to a Thunderbolt Display for over an hour. I have tested this to great length, it doesn't matter whether it's photoshop, microsoft word or google chrome that's running, it's the fact that it has to power an external display.
I have taken it to Apple Support, however they perform their cooling system tests in 18 degree airconditioning so it's impossible to demonstrate how loud it gets at normal room temperature.
I presented this problem twice within my warranty period, but Apple will simply do their test and deny any problem as the fans barely start up in the cold test environment. They did say that if my laptop overheats and becomes damaged, they will cover the damages because I made the complaint within the warranty period. Now my warranty has expried (I simply didn't have time to waste taking the computer to Apple again within the last two months).
Is there anything I can do to get my laptop fixed? I'm pretty sure the graphics card was faulty to begin with as it cannot take the load of a Thunderbolt Display over an extended period. There are so many documented cases of issues concerning fan noise and overheating with the 2012 rMBP, is Apple not going to do anything about it?!

Follow directions for a battery that should not remove yourself. Also have the Apple tech make sure you do not have a bad temp sensor.

It's been getting progressively worse over the last few months. I took it to the Apple Store in July and they documented it, said it would "eventually" need service. I called in September when it was cracking almost 90% of the time when closing the screen. I got it back and it was fine for about a week or so, and then it started again.
If I adjust the screen in any way or when I'm closing it (almost always when I'm "pulling" the screen down to close it), this noise happens on the right-side. My wife has a white unibody Macbook and it does not make this noise at all. As far as tacticle or feel of it, I get the sense the hinge isn't disengaging when I'm trying to close the screen.
I just sent it in again but am getting progressively more and more disappointed in this machine--it was expensive. I have Apple care (thank god) and it is covering it, but in the past year (going on two) that I've had it, it's had the following repairs done...
* Logic Board (headphone jack died...)
* Hard Drive (kernel panics...this is what they replaced)
* RAM (part of the same repair for kernel panics...this is also what they replaced)
* Hinge (2x now)
* Battery Cover (warped)
The only issue they have not been able to "fix" was the pulsing backlight when it's on low brightness, they said that was "normal". However, I'm getting a horizontal black bar flashing on the screen every so often when I'm using it--it's anywhere from 1-3" in width from the top of the screen. I've not seen this on any other Mac in our home.
Sorry, I don't mean to sound like a rant but the hinge thing is really annoying (not to mention the repairs). Anyone else have this issue?

My late-2008 MBP's display hinge has always made a slight creaking sound when it moves. After 22 months of use, there is no indication that this is actually a problem.
The only issue they have not been able to "fix" was the pulsing backlight when it's on low brightness, they said that was "normal".
My screen's backlight pulses or flickers slightly at very low brightness settings. I believe they all do. It's explained in this excellent post from darrylh:

My MBP has always done this, dozens of times a day. It has no more effect on my work or my enjoyment of the MBP than the fact that I blink my eyes frequently. When my eyes are closed, I can't see *any part* of the screen. But I'm not sending my head in for repair, because blinking doesn't interfere with anything I do. I suggest that you simply ignore your display's blinking, just as you ignore your eyes blinking.

Um, if the harddrive is whining it might be broken since the whine was caused by fan/power issues. I'd take it in to an apple store and have it looked at right away before the drive dies.

Scraping noise when turning MacBook Pro

I recently had my computer in to the Apple store to replace the battery. Since the replacement I have noticed a strange noise that happens if I turn the computer sideways. It is a loud scraping sound. I will be taking it back to the store to have them take a look at it but judging from similar threads it could be any number of things. Just want to get an idea whether anyone else has experienced this issue.

I've not experienced this issue, but there should not be any noises, no matter which position you use your MBP. Visit your Apple Store again, and have them fix the issue.

High pitched noise and 13' MacBook Pro (2010) not working at all

A few nights ago my computer starting making a high pitched noise and was immediately slower (barely working at all actually) I feared it was over heating so I shut it all down and let it rest for the night, the next day I went to start it up and the noise started again and I couldnt get passed the white screen that pops up when the computer is starting.
I'm fearing the worst and thinking it might be the hard drive or something. But I thought I would see if anyone else had any thoughts or possibly something I could try.

Applejack is just a command-line "front-end" for a number of different command-line tools you can use in single-user mode, and I'm not sure whether it's Lion-compatible. You can always try booting into single-user mode and executing:
/sbin/fsck -fy
That's unlikely to solve your problems, though. Since you can't boot from two different hard drives and your optical drive, that indicates there's a more serious hardware issue, or multiple hardware issues.

Noise from MacBook Pro Retina 13 late 2013

I wonder if noise from my MacBook Pro Retina 13 late 2013 is normal. I can hear it only in quiet room (first time I heard it in the middle of the night). It’s very quiet noise. I don't know what to compare this noise. For me it’s sounds like clicking the spring. I can hear it when scrolling the webpage by trackpad, start mission control by gesture (or F3 key), changing the full screen apps by gesture or when minimize Safari or other apps. I think it depends on the graphic system work. It’s a little lauder when I use 1680x1050 scaled resolution than use 'best for display' resolution. I think the noise occurs when graphic system do some operation. Is it possible?
Today I was in Authorized Service Provider but technician heard nothing. There I can't hear this noise too, because this noise is very quiet and there is not total silence. Diagnostic tools show that everything is ok. But I still hear it in total quiet room. I tried to record this noise by iPhone but it can't do that.
Can you do me a favor and check this on your MacBook? Sit in totally quiet room, please. Set the scaled resolution 1680x1050 then bring ear closer to the keyboard and scroll a webpage (which have a lot of graphics) by gesture on the trackpad, start mission control or open notification center. Can you hear then any noise? Please listen carefully, because this is very quiet noise.
I’ll be very gratefully for your help. I wonder if only my MacBook making this noises or all MacBook Retina late 2013 making this.

Thank you Jon Bo for your response. I agree with you. This noise is something like electronic noise, and it is related to the graphics card.
The rMBP 13 late 2013 works without any noise other then situations I’ve described above. The noise is so quiet that I can't hear it when e.g. external HDD working in the same room.

Maybe you could describe what kind of "weird" noises you are hearing? Everybody's perception of weird is not the same, and something that you may think is weird may have a logical explanation. But we can't even begin to diagnose it without a little more to go on....

What is "normal' operation noise for MacBook Pro's

Hi guys, could somebody inform me of what is considered "normal" operation noise when the MacBook Pro is in use? I purchased my first Mac 2wks ago & have already gone through 2!! The first one had battery issues so they just gave me a new one (very nice of them) & the second one had optical drive issues which again they issued me a new one. The third one now, which is only 3days old, keeps making some sort of slight static noise or sounds like optical drive is trying to read a disc or something every time I open an application & when surfing the net & switching through pages. It sounds like its coming from the middle right hand side. It's not that loud as it can only be heard when I'm in the library or when I'm in a moderate to quiet room. Now, rather than me going in again to the Apple Store & making a fool of myself just wanted some insight of how these machines run/sound? Any info would be great....Thanks

Well, took it to Apple, they gave me now my fourth MacBook Pro.
Apparently the noises weren't normal but the glass like sound is the SMS sensor - so thats normal. The new one now which I got yesterday sounds better except now every time I wake it from sleep or turn it on after shutdown the fans go on high speed & make a really loud noise which only lasts for a few seconds??
The other 3 I had did not do this...so, am I just having bad luck or is every mac different when waking?

My Macbook Pro feels slow and the hard drive is making a faint rattling noise.

I'm seriously considering taking it back to the Apple Store. I've had it for just over 4 months.
The hard drive is a lot louder than it used to be and rattles faintly.
I used to be able to open various large applications like Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Fireworks for web design all at once, and each application worked fine transferring different files from one to the other.
I'm really disappointed that after 4 months my MacBook Pro feels like an ordinary laptop. It's embarrassing to think I paid £1000 for something that will decrease in performance ability over such a short period of time.
I repair disk permissions, have 15% + free space on my hard drive, empty the recycle bin, pretty much everything that should help un-clog the system.
I have also use compressed air to blow dust out of the fans and around the insides of my MacBook Pro. (No I have not damaged anything, the noise is roughly the same as it was BEFORE I took the MacBook apart), and still no luck.
Any help, suggestions or even sharing a similar experience would be appreciated!

Loud fan and metal cracking noise on Macbook Pro 13''?

I have the late 2011 model Macbook Pro 13''. The problem started out with just a loud fan, the computer started to operate really slowly and just yesterday I started to hear loud metal rattling on the inside. At first it was just when I turned the computer but now it will do it periodically while it's sitting completely still while running. It also is heating up a lot. I've already gone to Activity Monitor and killed all activities using too much CPU and the fan doesn't stop.

I have the same model and accidentally dropped mine off my bed today.
I looked around for a while to see what the noise could have been and found this

I'd suggest you try turning off the SMS and then back on.
I did that with mine and it hasn't made any more noise since. If that doesn't help, it's never a bad idea to go to the apple store to have it looked at. Especially for how expensive the computer is.
