Raw adjustments VS Photoshop adjustments

I understand the benefit of shooting camera raw and I like the adjustments you can make without effecting the photo itself. The one thing I can't get used to is the limiting workflow in raw that allows you to undo only one change. Being a long time user of Photoshop I'm spoiled by all the image changes I'm allowed to make in combination with one another and the ability to back out of all or some of them.
I'm I missing something in the raw workflow? I wasn't sure if this should be posted in the Photoshop, Bridge or Raw forum. If any of you know of a forum that discuss's this sort of stuff, please point me there.
Thanks,
Sparky52t

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I don't think I explained myself very well so let me try again. In Photoshop I can make a duplicate layer and change all sorts of settings to improve the image. If I want to go back to an earlier point in my changes, I can simply go to history. When I'm happy with my revisions I can compare it with the original to see if I have indeed made a better image by switching between the layers.
When adjusting raw images the process seems so linear by comparison. I might adjust the exposure slider and then the recovery slider and then the fill light slider but if I'm not happy where I am, there's no way to cancel the recovery and fill light sliders and get back to only the exposure change I had made. And there's no original image I can switch to for comparison.
To be honest, I have a lot to learn about raw and at 56 learning comes a lot more slowly than it used to. I'm aware of the benefits to using raw but at the moment the costs are holding me back.

  • Photoshop adjustments not saving back to Aperture

Using Aperture 3.3.1 and Photoshop Elements 10.
When roundtripping a photo as a TiFF file to photoshop, I make adjustments in photoshop. When I click save (not "Save as") it takes me to a save as dialog box and a TiFF options dialog box. The adjustments I have made in PS are not showing in Aperture. Not on the thumb or the preview. Is there a fix for this.
I have tried restarting aperture, or making a minor adjustment to the image, but the image is still not updating.

What is the file extension you are seeing in the save-as dialog? Aperture saves as "tiff", but Elements as "tif". Make sure the extension is "tiff".

  • HDR:  Adjustments in Photoshop or Lightroom?

Are any creative/optimization options lost by taking images from Lightroom, sending them to Merge to HDR Pro in Photoshop to create the file, keeping it a 32-bit file and sending it back to Lightroom for further adjustments compared to keeping it in Photoshop, converting it to a 16-bit file and using the HDR Toning adjustments in Photoshop?  Will either strategy result in a better final result as a large print?

Working on the 32-bit image in Lightroom will give you far more flexibility and enable you to do a lot more. Julianne Kost produced a quick tip for Lightroom 4.1 that explains the benefits of doing your HDR images this way. You might want to take a look.  Of course everything she shows still holds true in Lightroom 5.

I have a canon 7d and my aperture version 3.4.5 is not recognizing the raw format? The Can not review any raw photo in the adjustments/raw fine tuning controls.

When i click on the adjustments everything is grayed out and the messages states " Image Not Found'.
Are you seeing broken arrows or yellow warning triangles, when you enable badge overlays?
That looks, like your original image files were missing.  Are your images referenced or managed?
Create a smart album with the rules "Files status is missing" or "Files status is offline". This will show you any images, where the original raw files cannot be found.

  • Camera Raw - apply auto tone adjustments ...

In camera raw, "apply auto tone adjustments" option in the preferences dialog is not same with the "auto" button on the basic panel, isn't it?
Both of them control the same sliders, are there any relationship between them?

Maybe, there is a bug for Windows 7 64-bit ... when the "apply auto tone adjustments" option is active on the preferences dialog, the auto button on the basic panel is also active and I'm always getting slightly different results by pressing it.

  • Opening RAW files in Photoshop CC

Why can't I open my RAW files in Photoshop CC?  I am only able to open the jpgs.  I browse the thumbnails in Bridge and then correct in the RAW menu but when I request to open them in Photoshop, they cannot open.

If you can open the RAW files in Camera RAW, then you don't need to update, but it won't hurt to do so.  The thing is, if youare able to do your edits in Camera RAW, I can't think of a reason they wouldn't open in Photoshop when done.  Nor have I heard of such a problem before.  Are you definitely clicking on Open image, and not Done?
Try opening a JPG in ACR.  Select it in Bridge, and use Ctrl (Cmd) r.  Make some adjustments and try and open in Photoshop.

  • Old version of Camera Raw toolbar in photoshop cc

    Hello Guys,
I'm hoping someone can help me with this problem that's been driving me nuts for a couple of weeks now.
I have the very latest version of Photoshop CC - when I bring up Camera Raw in Photoshop (Filter-Camera Raw Filter), the toolbar at the top displays the older version of the tools available (screen shot below) - the newer version with the current tools doesn't appear. I've tried deleting and re-installing Photoshop CC numerous times now, tried numerous web searches and a search on this forum to no avail. I did have Photoshop 6 previously installed for a short while last year before I moved to CC, but I have uninstalled that already. Im on a mac using latest version of Mavericks. Curiously I can get the new version of Camera Raw if I use Bridge, but as I don't use Bridge for anything else this is not really a solution.
If anyone can help me out I will be really grateful!
    Best wishes,
    David

Hello folks...many thanks for your very quick replies, it's greatly appreciated. I'm sorry that I've taken longer than I would like to thank you all, work got in the way and this is the first chance I had to reply.
So yes, my original question was borne out of my own ignorance. I'm still learning about Photoshop and Bridge and thanks to the great tutorials on Kelby One I've come a long way. But not far enough it seems! After reading all your replies I finally realised that I was making a fundamental error, and wrongly assumed that the Camera Raw filter in Photoshop CC would give me the same toolbar as the CR plugin available in Bridge. Part of this was due to the fact that I don't currently use Bridge in my workflow - my images go into Aperture (for organisation and until recently minor raw adjustments) and from there I then pop into Photoshop, missing out Bridge altogether from my workflow. With all the tutorials I ve been watching on Kelby One, I've been slowly weening myself of Aperture and getting a much better handle on the intricacies of Photoshop for my editing and this also partly explains why I was getting confused.
Thanks again to everyone who replied and getting me back on the right track. It's all one big goddam learning curve - I hope to get there one day!
    Best wishes,
    David

  • Transfer camera raw preset to photoshop action

Hello everyone, do you know if it's possible to transfer the adjustments I did on Camera Raw / LightRoom to a Photoshop action?
    Thanks

Thanks very much Mylenium, I did that, but I ask myself if it's any way to do it via an action inside Photoshop, just to share it in this format.
In fact, I can more or less "imitate" LR's noise, luminance and shadow adjustments inside Photoshop, but it will be very helpfull if you can tell me a way to "imitate" the 8 color channels control panel of HLS present in LR / CR (red, orange, yellow, green, aqua, blue, purple, magenta) inside Photoshop.
You know, when going to Photoshop, the maximun number of channels I can find under Adjustments > Hue/Saturation is 6 (reds, yellows, greens, cyans, blues, magentas).
Maybe is there any conversion scheme or a plugin out there to transfer original data of LR's 8 color channels to PS's native 6 color channels?
    Thanks again!

  • Opening raw images in Photoshop Elements 9

When opening raw images in Photoshop Elements 9 (File -> Open or File -> Open As), the Adobe Camera Raw dialog do not open.
Instead I get a window with a progress bar and the text "Reading Camera Raw Format".
The image then opens in the Photoshop Elements editor.
I have tested this with raw images both from Canon EOS 1000D and Samsung WB2000 cameras.
I would appreciate any suggestions on how to solve this issue.
I run Photoshop Elements on a HP netbook running Widows XP and with an Intel Atom N450 / 1.66 GHz processor, 2 GB ram and a screen resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels.

Unfortunately you can't see the raw converter in PSE 9 on screens less than 800 px tall, which means not on netbooks. PSE will automatically convert it for you, but that dialog box and a few others, like the Advanced Downloader window, will not appear.

I have Photoshop Elements 12 for both PC and Mac (I use both). I have a new camera, Nikon D810. I downloaded the latest version of Camera Raw, 8.8. My D810 is listed as a supported camera model. However, when I try to open a raw photo in Photoshop Elements, I keep getting the message "Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw. I have tried reinstalling Camera Raw many times, and have tried to open many different raw files in Elements, and still get the same error message. Please help.

How did you try to install ACR 8.8.  The only way I know of that works with Elements is to use the Updates Choice on the Help menu.
There are two charts supplied by Adobe that explain your RAW dilemma.  This one tells you what your camera needs:  http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html   This one tells you what version of software you need:  http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
In your case, the Nikon D810 needs Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 8.6 or Lightroom 5.6.  (Congratulations on buying a new camera!)
To get to that level with Photoshop Elements, you will need to replace your Photoshop Elements 12 with version 13.   Adobe caps ACR updates on version 12 at 8.5.
The most convenient way to get around it without spending any money is to use the FREE from Adobe DNG Converter.  Download and install it from here for FREE:  http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=5855&fileID=5890  Once it is installed you can convert your D810 raw files to an Adobe RAW version with the .DNG file extension that most, if not all, versions of the various Adobe software programs can use.  That includes old versions of Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom.  DNG converter can be used as the tool to move your files from your memory card to your computer, is efficient, will convert in batches and is completely lossless.  There is no risk of any image quality degradation or RAW functionality.

  • Unable to open Canon 7D CR2 raw files in Photoshop CS6

    Hi Folks,
I have been trying to open Canon 7D CR2 raw files in Photoshop CS6 (Extended) (Windows 8.1) but I'm always getting the error "Could not complete your request because the file format module cannot parse your file".
I installed the Camera Raw plugin ver 8.8.0.397 today. Did this initially by downloading and running the CameraRaw_8_8.zip available here Camera Raw plug-in installer. Still got the error.
Went and did the Check Updates in Photoshop and updated the Camera Raw (and other components) but STILL cannot open the CR2 files.
I can see the thumbnails in Bridge but when I double click to open them in Photoshop, same error.
Cannot seem to get past the "Could not complete your request..." error.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers,

    Hi Folks,
Thanks for your replies and assistance so far, very much appreciated. Its a very frustrating problem... this should be one of those things that just work.
I have uploaded two sample pics taken with my canon 7d. If you get a chance, could you please try opening these images to see if they work on your machine.

I have tried opening them on both my office and home computer but neither of them work.
Hmmm... could it have anything to do with the lens (Canon Macro Lens EF  100mm1:2.8 USM)
    Many thanks!

  • How can I process a Sony A7 RAW file into Photoshop CS5.

How can I process a Sony A7 RAW file into Photoshop CS5.  I tried the file DNG converter 8.3, but it did not work.  I was able to download it, but upon reading the memory chip from Photoshop CS5, it reads the jpg files fine, but not the RAW files.  I thought the DNG converter 8.3 was the right file, but apparently it is not.  Perhaps I need to do something in Photoshop CS5 to initiate it, or place it in a particular directory.. Please help.

First of all, you should have used the Adobe DNG Converter 8.6, not an old, obsolete version.  Always use the very latest version.  8.3 was simply the first ACR version to support your camera model, that's all.
Note that the DNG Converter works only on folders, not on individual raw files.  Put all your Sony raw files in a folder and run the Converter on that folder containing the raw files.
I have absolutely no clue as to what on Earth you mean by : "upon reading the memory chip from Photoshop CS5".
You also need to make sure that CS5 is fully updated.  You cannot rely on the highly and notoriously unreliable Adobe auto updater to tell whether you have the latest update installed or not.
I still have no idea what platform you are on, Mac or Windows. Please read the following for next time:
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them, etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster).
A screen shot could be very helpful too.
