RAW changed to TIFF in upgrade to iPhoto '08

When we upgraded from iPhoto 4 to iPhoto ’08, we allowed the newly installed program to convert our old iPhoto library into the new format. Everything seems to be OK except for RAW images from a Nikon D80 with file extension .NEF. All of the .NEF images which were in iPhoto before iPhoto converted them are now identified in the iPhoto information box as "kind TIFF Image". They do not display as sharp images in iPhoto.
For the record, images uploaded from the same camera after upgrading iPhoto appear as sharp photos and are correctly identified as “kind Nikon Raw”. We knew that iPhoto 4 could not work with RAW photos, but it allowed us to upload them and see and label their chunky images, and we believed that they would be preserved when we upgraded the program. This was one reason we chose to upgrade. Unfortunately, we didn't realize the scope of this problem until after we had deleted our backup of the iPhoto 4 photo library.
If we export one of these misidentified images, then change the file extension of the exported image to .NEF from .TIF, and then import it into iPhoto again, the problem is corrected, but the description we have entered for the photo is lost. (Keywords would also be lost, but we hadn’t used them.)
Why did this happen? Could we have prevented it? Is there a way to correct the identification of these images and preserve the descriptions we have entered for them? Is there a way to correct all of our approximately 1000 RAW images all at once or to automate the file extension changes?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Other users have reported similar problems, mostly with Canon raw files. Do a search in the iPhoto forum for "raw to tiff" and you'll get a list of the threads where it is discussed. There may be an solution or explanation in there.
Metadata can only be written to jpg or tiff files by iPhoto. So exporting the raw files to the desktop cannot include the metadata you added. Keywords and comments added to a Nikon NEF file by other applications, iView MediaPro, do not get imported into iPhoto. iPhoto creates a jpg version of the file for display and editing and the metadata does not get transferred to it.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Can you save Canon RAW files as TIFF in iPhoto 6?

    I was just wondering...
Can you save imported Canon RAW (.cr2) files as TIFF files in iPhoto 6? I know you can view RAW files in iPhoto, but I need to edit them in Photoshop CS, which I don't think supports Canon RAW.
    Thanks!
eMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Photoshop CS, not CS2 or CS3, etc...

    Robert:
Yes, you can export them to the desktop and select
tiff as the format to save as.
Have you tried opening the cr2 files with CS2? PSCS3
    can open and edit them.
    Do you
    Twango?
I am stuck with Photoshop CS, and have not chosen to upgrade to CS2 or CS3 at this time. For now, I will use iPhoto to export RAW files as TIFF and open them in Photoshop. Thanks for your help!

The iPhoto library should be in your user folder/Pictures unless it was moved.

  • I just upgraded to iPhoto '11.  When it was finished many pictures do not appear.  I have a black box but the information for the picture is still there.  Some are raw and some are jpeg.  Also lost all albums.  Can anyone offer assistance?

I just upgraded to iPhoto '11.  When it was finished many pictures do not appear.  I have a black box but the information for the picture is still there.  Some are raw and some are jpeg.  Also lost all albums.  Can anyone offer assistance?  Using iOS 10.7.5

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • RAW JPEG PROBLEM  I'm new to Aperture and neglected to mark RAW JPEG pairs when I imported (from iPhoto).  Now I have two images for each photo.  Help!!  How can I change this?

I’m new to Aperture and neglected to mark RAW+JPEG pairs when I imported (from iPhoto).  Now I have two images for each photo.  Help!!  How can I change this?

How did you import from iPhoto? If you saw the Import panel with raw -jpeg pairs, then you probably did not import your iPhoto library as library, but as files, and then you will see plenty of duplicates - previews, thumbnails, originls, edited versions. If that should be the case, it would be better to delete the import from iPhoto and to import your iPhoto library again, but this time using "File > Import > Library".
Only that would require compatible versions of iPhoto and Aperture.  What are your Aperture and iPhoto version numbers?

  • Upgraded to iphoto 11 to change layouts for a book I am making. Help!

Upgraded to iphoto 11 to change layouts for a book I am making.
Layout change went great but now I have text in the lower right hand corner of my cover that I cannot remove.
It is the old title of the book but smaller and where the page number would be. Show/Hide page number has no effect although changing the font for page numbers does affect the text.
I really do not want to start over. I have tried changing layouts to no avail. I wish I could make a new cover and just import it to replace the one I have. Any ideas? Is there a command line fix that could solve this?
    Thanks for any suggestions!

check a preview of the book and see if it is there - Before ordering your book preview it using this method - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 - and save the resulting PDF for reference - the delivered book will match it.

  • Upgrading to iphoto form 8.0 to 9.0

    PLEASE HELP!!!
Got a new (to me) macbook pro.
It came with ilife (old version) and i installed iphoto, etc etc
The iphoto i have is Version 8.0
I apparently needed some upgrades (RAW compatibility upgrades) to see my RAW photos and videos taken on some newer cameras.
I can't upgrade from iphoto 8.0 though, since all the upgrades require me to have iphoto 9.0 or later installed. And I can't seem to download iphoto 9.0 anywhere. All the iphoto updated downloads i find are version 9.xxx and those require you to already have 9.0 installed.
    Why is it this complicated?
Any ideas as to how to bring my iphoto 8.0 (installed from an older ilife CD) up to date so i can actually see and work with my pictures? I'm guessing i am about to go through the same ordeal with iMovie.
    THANKS!!
I upgraded my system to 10.6.7... a fight in itself

If you also use iWeb and iDVD I recomment you get the iLife 11 boxed verson from Apple's online store.
That will give you all of the latest iApps including iWeb and iDVD on disk which will make it easy to do a reinstall if there's ever a need or install iLife on a new computer which will not have iWeb or iDVD.

  • I have a Mac Desktop that is running OS 10.10.1, I am trying to upgrade my iPhoto to 9.6, but nothing happens after the perceived download.  I even retarted and still my iPhoto is in not available, why?

My iMac = Desktop 20", 2GHz processor, 4 GB memory, running OS 10.10.1
I am tring to upgrade my iPhoto and when I follow Apple's instructions on how to do so, the download seems to occur, I click on the upgrade package and nothing changes.
I have restarted the computer after the download and still no change.
    What am I missing?

    leonie,
Thanks for the reply, I finally got it solved.  I had to find the upgrade in the Utilities folder of the Finder...

  • I am trying to chose an upgrade from iPhoto to either lightroom or photoshop elements 10

I am trying to chose an upgrade from iphoto to either lightroom or photoshope elements 10, and would appreciate any comments/advice
    Thanks for your time
    Sandy

Elements and LIghtroom are different categories of app. Elements is a pretty straight up editor. Lightroom is database driven photo manager with lossless processing. Simply, Lightoom would be the upgrade to iPhoto.
That said, there is no upgrade path from iPhoto to these apps. You will need to export from iPhoto to the Finder - a process that means you will lose something of the work you have done in iPhoto already.
If your reason for upgrading is to add editing power then you can use Elements as an extenral editor to iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
If the Limitation you see in iPhoto is primarily photo managment then have a look at Aperture. Half the price of Lightroom, much better manager, complete with OS integration.
If you're shooting Raw then Lightroom or Aperture are the way to go.
You can set Elements as an external editor in either.

  • Just upgraded to iPhoto 11 and have a major problem!

Can anyone assist me please. I have just purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 and once I loaded it and tried to organise my photo collection, the system informed me that my iPhoto needed to be upgraded to iPhoto 11.
I purchased the upgrade and when I loaded Adobe PSE9 'Organiser' I received an error message box which states that I have an
e-licenser Control Error. Specifically it states that 'Halion Sonic 1.x M6' has caused the following error:
elicenser(s) contains no valid license for this application.
It then gives me the following options:
         - For Trouble shooting options click 'Help'
         - Click <Licences> to view available licenses
         - Connect a valid eLicenser and click <retry>
         - Click <cancel> to abort.
I do have an elicense for Halion products that I use with Cubase 6. I am not sure why a software for my music studio should conflict with PSE9 and prevent the software from organising my photographs from iPhoto.
Even if I remove the Adobe software from my iMAC the iPhoto 11 upgrade will not load any of my photos that were originally on the system
Please can anyone offer me some advice as I have tried all of the above options without success.
    Strummerlee

    Your question is not clear
Can anyone assist me please. I have just purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 and once I loaded it and tried to organise my photo collection, the system informed me that my iPhoto needed to be upgraded to iPhoto 11.
How were you organizing your photo collection? You are aware that make any changes to the content or structure of the iPhoto library will corrupt your library and cause data loss
As to informing you that you needed to upgrade to iPhoto '11 - I do not believe that that ever happens - you may be notified that your library has been upgraded and you need an upgrade - this can be caused by library corruption (like moving or modifying files within the iPhoto library using the finder or a program other than iPhoto) - I'm not clear but it could possibly be related to your organizing your photos
You then go into s discussion of PSE9, Halion and Cubase 6 - all not Apple products and not iPhoto related - hat questions would best be addressed in the support forums for those products
Even if I remove the Adobe software from my iMAC the iPhoto 11 upgrade will not load any of my photos that were originally on the system
this depends on exactly what you did to "organize" your photos - I'm guessing that you have destroyed your iPhoto library and will have to start over but need more information to be sure
Do you have a backup of your iPhoto library from just before you "organized" your photos?

  • Problems with iPhoto upgrader on iPhoto 7.1.5. HELP!

I installed and ran the iPhoto upgrader for iPhoto 7 in preparation to install a newer version of iPhoto (9 or later) so that i can get photo album and books printed via iPhoto.  I downloaded a number of available iPhoto 9 upgrades, but none worked even through i had run the upgrader.  I am now stuck with a MacBook (OS X 10.7.5) with a version of iPhoto that won't open (error message: You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto) and also wo';t allow me to install any iPhoto upgrades.  Help!  I have tried to restore iPhoto from time machine, but that hasn't worked, plus trying the original install disk for my laptop hasn't worked, presumably because i have upgraded the OS a few times since i got it (it's a late 2008 dinosaur of a macbook!).  I am worried that now i have lost my photos and will have to pay 50 quid for a iLife disk with no guarantee that it will work.  All i really want to do is un-install the upgrader and return iPhoto to it's original 7.1.5 state.  Is that possible? Also how can i check that my photos are still stored somewhere without being able to open iPhoto? Please help! Thank you.

You only need to run the upgrader if you have iPhoto 9.5.  It's not needed for other iPhoto 9 versions, i.e. 9.0 thru 9.4.3.
You might be able to downgrade that library by following this iPhoto LIbrary Manager tutorial: Fat Cat Software - iPhoto Library Manager Help - Downgrading a library to an earlier version of iPhoto

  • Adding shutterfly upload software changed the defaul mail program in iPhoto

I recently added the shutterfly upload software for iPhoto and in the process, it changed my default email program in iPhoto from Mail to some new microsoft program. I went into preferences to change back, but now Mail is greyed out and not an option. What is up with that? And how can I get my default back to Mail?

The program is MS Entourage and the fix you described above solved the problem.
However, I just upgraded to iLife 06, and upgraded my iPhoto from 4 to 6. In the process, this issue of the MS Entourage hijack has returned. I've deleted Entourage from my computer and the iPhoto preference file, yet no luck -- I still can't return the setting for email in preferences to Mac Mail (that option is greyed out). Any ideas?

  • Cannot change dates in new upgrade

Since the upgrade of iphoto this week i have been unable to change the date of my events,   When i bring the event up and check info the date is correct but not on the event page,  This becomes a problem when i would like all my evens in chronological order,,,,,Can anyone help.   PLEASE

This has been reported a few times - I have not seen it
Report to Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback
If things are working correctly the event dates are simply a reporting of the dates of the photos within the event - be sure that there is not a photo in there with a wrong date - try welecting all of them and adjusting the time by one seond and marking to change the original and see if that has any effect
