RAW d200

Windows
Procesador Intel® Pentium® III o 4

  • Nikon D200 Support

Has anyone heard an update as to when Aperture will support the raw D200 files?
    Thanks
    Steven

I sent Nikon a note and this was their response...
    HI
Thanks for your question. As far as when other companies will support files from new companies you would have to ask those other companies. We provide the necessary tools for them to use, it is just a matter of them implementing support.
Regarding your request for a "universal" file format, Nikon is always looking at new formats and technology and when an industry standard format is available that offers the same benefits as our NEF files we will certainly study that format. THANKS
    -David
    Thanks for using Nikon products!
My suspicion, based on tea leaf reading of this note, is pretty much you have to do it the way Nikon wants or else...and that may generate problems for Aperture. Notice also the rather passive nature of "when an industry standard format is available.... " heck as a major player, Nikon should be leading the charge rather than sitting back and waiting for a standard to appear.
I also guess that Nikon does not want me to buy the D200 any time soon.

  • Exported Jpeg size

Just started using aperture 1.5 and find that its not bad. I am trying to retouch Raw D200 images to black and white by making a new version and either using the chanel mixer to monochrome or by desaturating. I am finding it really nice to use and comparing the images side by side is fantastic for keeping consistency. Only minor thing i have noticed is the jpeg size is only2.8ish meg when exported from aperture, as apposed to a file that was exported using Nikon picture project or Capture NX and retouched to Black and White in Photoshop which ends up at around 3.8-4.5meg as a jpeg.
Does anyone know why, and is it something to be concerned about?
    Thanks for your help.

The JPEG size is a function of JPEG quality - it could be that NX is set to output lossles JPG, or at least a higher quality level.
For any export preset, you can edit it and adjust the JPG quality - if you highlight an export preset while in the preset editing mode, and hit the "+" button at the bottom left, if will duplicate that preset so you can make a slightly different one.
You probably should look over the presets you use anyway just to make sure all settings are as you would wish.

  • Need help with the noise reduction settings

    Hi,
After som experimenting I need some help with the settings for noise reduction.
I just edited and converted a few pictures from RAW (D200) til 8-bit TIFF. Opend the file up in photoshop and was shocked to see the amount of noise in the pictures. I then exported the RAW-files and did the same conversion in Capture One 3.7.3 - The result is a lot better regarding noise. In capture One I'm using the noise reduction step before "High".
Can you share your experience with the optimal settings for best noise removal ?
    Thanks in advance,
    fbrose

i use it once in a while, but i play around with the sliders in full screen mode and at 100% and then see what the sliders do. I don't have a definite procedure that I can suggest though.

  • LR 2 and AutoTone

I'm aware that a function like AutoTone cannot be perfect for all images, but for the quick adjustment of a larger batch of photos I'd like to have a function that simply corrects the black and white point automatically.
Photoshop or Capture NX have such a function, and most pictures look at least "ok" using it.
After several experiments with AutoTone in LR 1.x I finally could get along with that function, only few pictures got much to bright and had to be corrected manually.
Unfortunately in LR 2 AutoTone works significant different, now almost 40-50% of my RAWs (D200) get to dark using it. Is there any chance to correct or tweak this behaviour?
I've tried a preset which only uses "AutoExposure" and "AutoShadows", but this is also quite unreliable: while AutoShadows more or less sets the blackpoint correct, I've no idea how AutoExposure works. In some underexposed photos it even sets the exposure to lower values, so that the photos get more darker.

    > Unfortunately in LR 2 AutoTone works significant different, now almost 40-50% of my RAWs (D200) get to dark using it. Is there any chance to correct or tweak this behaviour?
It was tweaked for 2.0 because most people found it unreliable in 1.x.

  • The Future of Aperture

Does anyone know what the future of aperture is? Should I wait until the dust clears and version 2.0 is available? Suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Rick

It really depends what you want help with. If I never use Bridge again it will be too soon. Not everybody agrees.
But for me, working directly on RAW D200 images without going through ACR is a joy. I am absolutely getting benefit from Aperture now, and frankly have been since 1.0 although (only with D100 and scanned negs).
There are so many items that are useful. The direct access to Photoshop CS2 is exactly what I need for compositing and heavy editing. But let me tell you, I need to externally edit - less, and less.
You need to play with it at an Apple store, and imagine how you would use it. For many, Aperture is very valuable time saver despite some feature issues.
    I is very, very subjective.
    My two cents.

  • Cannot open NEF files from D200 in Camera Raw 4.1

I am using Photoshop CS3 with Windows XP. I have downloaded the latest Camera Raw update (4.1) and installed as directed.
I am able to open Raw files from Nikon D70 in camera raw but unable to open files from D200 - I am getting the message that it is an invalid file.
When I revert back the the previous version of camera raw I can open these files with no problem.
    Can amyone advise please.
    Thanks
    J

    Janet,
    > I am not using Photoshop 6, where did you get that from?
We are referring to Trevor in post #2, not you.
As to your issue, just a general comment, as I don't do Windows:
Even though it sounds too obvious, make sure you have properly uncompressed (unzipped) the downloaded ACR 4.1 and that you have installed it according to the instructions.
    >I have downloaded the latest Camera Raw update (4.1) and installed as directed.
Note that you didn't say "unzipped", so forgive me for bringing it up.

  • Lines - artefacts? - on raw files from d200

hello. this is the first time I've tried a forum..
my problem is old raw files that were originally imported into iphoto from a D200 (jpegs shot at same time are fine) - they appear ok but with thin coloured horizontal lines (artifacts?) - in iphoto, and however I export them (eg as a TIFF, as original into Aperture, onto an external hard drive). I have solved this import problem with an update now, so its okay for new pictures - BUT - are all the old files damaged or recoverable somehow?? I would be very grateful for any help..

hello & thank you. I just tried opening them in Capture NX and the lines are still there. I'm presuming this means the files were damaged somehow by being imported through iphoto that first time - as it no longer happens now I have the update (all my backup raw files were - I think - dragged out of iphoto and onto disk/hard drive, & show same thing). Does anyone know if there is any way to restore them?

  • Camera Raw and Nikon D200

I've got an ongoing printing problem that is included in in a post a few days ago. I went to the Genius Bar in Orlando and the Creative there found that I had a problem with some Nikon profiles. I've installed the Camara Raw update but I still get the errors below... How can I resolve?

These files are color icc profile *.icm files. In particular, D200 specific files for the latter (NKLch2.icm is a Standard Nikon Profile).
Have you tried changing the print color profile to AdobeRGB?
If you are already in Adobe RGB color space, save the file as tif in Capture, then print from another program. Also try moving them out of the Profile folder and see if the error goes away? If you are not using them, it should not affect you. My NKLch2.icm file is Nikon Lch Profile v4.0.0.3003, if it matters....
I have never had this problem, sorry.

  • Nikon d200 and RAW files look weird

I just got a mac mini today with the latest iphoto and os x 10.4.7 with iphoto 6.0.4 (305). I got this computer specifically for this camera and my photography because I was having so much trouble with windows and people told me that mac is better.
The Nikon D200 RAW(NEF) files load fine, but after a few seconds they become strange looking and I cannot understand why this is happening. I don't have to do anything other than open the file for this too happen. It comes in, looks normal for a seconds, and then, POOF it looks all strange.
Someone PLEASE help me I am desperate!!!

Can you be more specific. Are the colors incorrect or are there artifacts on the photo. What exactly is wrong with the images?

  • Opening RAW files with iPhoto 06- Nikon D200

Is there any way to open RAW files with iPhoto 06 ? I have a Nikon D200.

I'm puzzled - I cannot even open them in preview - it flashes and then says its unsupported. DOes it matterwhat type of RAW you choose?
I open them fine in Photoshop Elements, would rather load them up in iPhoto for storage though.

  • Nikon D200 Raw files not supported?

Recently purchased the D200 and discovered that the Raw files are not supported. Just wondering if it is Aperture or the 10.4.4 that is causing the problems. Anyone else facing the same problems?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Recently purchased the D200 and discovered that the
Raw files are not supported. Just wondering if it is
Aperture or the 10.4.4 that is causing the problems.
Anyone else facing the same problems?
    Thanks
    In very simple terms...
In order to add support for various camera RAW files, Apple has to ask the camera manufactures to supply proprietary information about how to process and read the RAW files. Each and every single camera has a different "proprietary process" it must use to handle the RAW file that the camera produces.
So that means that Apple is at the mercy of the manufacturers in order to get that information. Now most manufactures would prefer that you purchase or use their own software to work on the RAW files that their camera produces... it's an extra revenue stream for them. Because of this, it's not hard to imagine that they are a bit reluctant to divulge what is proprietary information that they spent time and money on creating. It's well documented that Nikon in particular is very reluctant about releasing such information.
If Adobe has support for a particular camera that Apple does not, then that means that Adobe has already gone through the trouble of asking the manufacture for the information that is needed, reached an agreement and signed the appropriate licensing contracts, exchanged whatever compensation was agreed upon, and then went to work making the software for ACR so it can read that particular cameras RAW files. As you can imagine, it's a process that takes some time to hammer out... more than likely because it involves more lawyers than engineers!
So... be sure you let Apple know that you would like them to add support for a particular camera, but just as important, make sure that your cameras manufacturer knows that you would like them to allow Apple to support their cameras with Apple's software.

  • Nikon D200 Raw Support

    Hi there,
I purchased Aperture immediately it came out in December 2005 at the same time I got my new Nikon D200. Now some 3 months later I still cannot use Aperture for my Raw files from the D200.
Does anyone else have this same problem and/or does anyone have any info as to when this anomaly may be corrected. I have contacted Apple some time ago by telephone but as yet no response. The guy I spoke with said he would pass on my query.
Thanks for any help you may be able to provide as I am very frustated with lack of info in this regard.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

While routing through iPhoto 6's package structure, looking for names of months and days on calendars to translate into Irish Gaelic, I came upon something interesting. There are strings embedded in iPhoto 6 that match most available raw formats--even ones that aren't supported at all by OS X (such as Pentax's PEF files).
Hopefully 10.4.6 and/or further evolutions of OS X 10.4 will introduce more raw formats.

  • RAW import problem with 2.1.1 and d200

I just noticed this problem, so I'm assuming it's a 2.1.1 issue since this used to work fine...
The issue is that when I import RAW images into Aperture, the images do not preview in the import window. They appear as blank dashed line outlined squares and when I highlight them, they give the proper file name and size in mb, but not in pixels. They are listed as 128 x128 which I'm assuming is the preview size.
I can still import the images and they appear as they should once imported. This issue is really only a problem if i want to select a few images to import. My workaround for that is to use Image Capture since they preview fine there.

First read page 107 in the manual for the D200, and make sure everything is set correctly for direct connection.
Yes, I use a card reader, but have used direct to camera. This setting is a bit odd, and I ran across the difference this past weekend when I found my D300 set differently than my D200 has apparently always been. But since I was only connected to my iBook, and was not using Aperture at that moment, I did not see the full consequence that might result from some settings for the USB connection. All reports are that it may have a different impact on RAW than with JPEG.
