Raw device for oracle 8.1.7 on AIX 4.3.3
Hi there,
I am trying to use a raw device on AIX 4.3.3 for ORACLE 8.1.7.
I have created a raw device /dev/or_system
brw-rw---- 1 oracle dba 54, 1 Mar 04 10:44 or_system
but it is not possible to create a datafile on it :
SVRMGR> create database "GLM"
maxinstances 8
character set "WE8ISO8859P1"
datafile '/dev/or_system' size 150M REUSE

GROUP 1 ('/oracle/GLM/redo/log1.ora') size 100M,
GROUP 2 ('/oracle/GLM/redo/log2.ora') size 100M,
GROUP 3 ('/oracle/GLM/redo/log3.ora') size 100M,
GROUP 4 ('/oracle/GLM/redo/log4.ora') size 100M;
create database "GLM"
ORA-01501: CREATE DATABASE failed
ORA-01519: error while processing file '?/rdbms/admin/sql.bsq' near line 407
ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
ORA-01119: error in creating database file '/dev/or_system'
ORA-27038: skgfrcre: file exists
SVRMGR>
The ORA-27028 in exact this situation was reported as a bug in prior ORACLE Versions 8.0.4/ 8.0.5 and had
the bug no. 690228.
But we use as mentioned 8.1.7.
What do I do wrong?
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thank you
Gerhard
Each raw device you create is used as a single data file.
Eg mklv -y 'myfile' <vgname> <number of logical partitians>
Will have two special files associated with them /dev/rmyfile and /dev/myfile. The number of logical partitians will be the size of your datafile subtract 1 meg for overhead.
So, if you were addding the above raw volume to a tablespace, and the lp size was 32 meg, you would
create tabelspace tsname datafile '/dev/rmyfile' size 31 m;
Note the use of rmyfile not myfile.

Advantage of using RAW devices for storing database
Hi,
Marry Christmas to all.
Oracle 10g version 10.2.0.1.0 (rac)
OS : HP-UX 11i
I am new to this enviornment. We are using raw devices for storig the database.
Please tell what are the advantages for using raw devices for storing the database?
Thanks.http://www.fors.com/orasupp/unix/37914_1.HTM
The above link explains the raw devices and advantages. -
Hi,
did anybody successfully test Stephen Tweedy3s raw device against
Oracle? I testet also against Sybase but could not get it to run.
Stephen checked straces and stuff but there seems to be no error!
Look at ftp.uk.linux.org/pub/linux/sct/fs
This patch is against Linux 2.2.9.
Please people, test it and tell me if it works for you
Cheers

Hi Marcis,
I tested raw device with Oracle but in AIX with Oracle 7.3 and
it worked perfectly. While I'm waiting for Oracle8i on Linux and
would test it with raw device, I don't think there would be too
much different.

How can i use raw device in oracle 9.2.0.4
can i use "create tablespace XXX datafile '/dev/raw1' ..." to use raw device for tablespace? Or i should use "ln -s /dev/raw1 /oradata/xxx.dbf"?
does raw device as same as "xxx.dbf" is limited 4GB ?
pool english.hi,
as far as windows NT OS is concerned,,there's a utility (OCOPY) to store ur datafiles on to raw devices,,,but u cant directly access that datafiles for runtime databases,,its just for backup purposes..

RAW disks for Oracle 10R2 RAC NO SUN CLUSTER
Yes you read it correctly....no Sun cluster. Then why am I on the Forum right? Well we have one Sun Cluster and another that is RAC only for testing. Between Oracle and Sun, neither accept any fault for problems with their perfectly honed products. Currently, I have multipathed fiber hba's to a Storedge 3510, and I've tried to get Oracle to use a raw lun for the ocr and voting disks. It doesn't see the disk. I've made sure they are stamped for oracle:dba, and tried oracle:oinstall. When presenting /dev/rdsk/C7t<long number>d0s6 for the ocr, I get a "can not find disk path." Does Oracle raw mean SVM raw? Should I create metadisks?
"Between Oracle and Sun, neither accept any fault for problems with their perfectly honed products"...more specific:
Not that the word "fault" is characterization of any liability, but a technical characterization of acting like a responsible stakeholder when you sell your product to a corporation. I've been working on the same project for a year, as an engineer. Not withstanding a huge expanse of management issues over the project, when technical gray areas have been reached, whereas our team has tried to get information to solve the issue. The area has become a big bouncing hot potato. Specifically, when Oracle has a problem reading a storage device, according to Oracle, that is a Sun issue. According to Sun, they didn't certify the software on that piece of equipment, so go talk to Oracle. In the sun cluster arena, if starting the database creates a node eviction from the cluster, good luck getting any specific team to say, that's our problem. Sun will say that Oracle writes crappy cluster verify scripts, and Oracle will say that Sun has not properly certified the device for use with their product. Man, I've seen it. The first time I said O.K. how do we avoid this in the future, the second time I said how did I let this happen again, and after more issues, money spent, hours lost, and customers, pissed --do the math. I've even went as far as say, find me a plug and play production model for this specific environment, but good luck getting two companies to sign the specs for it...neither wants to stamp their name on the product due to the liability. Yes your right, I should beat the account team, but as an engineer, man that's not my area, and I have other problems that I was hired to deal with. I could go on. What really is a slap in face is no one wants to work on these projects, if given the choice with doing a Windows deployment, because they can pop out mind bending amounts of builds why we plop along figuring out why clusterware doesn't like slice 6 of a /device/scsi_vhci/ . Try finding good documentation on that. ~You can deploy faster, but you can't pay more! -

There was no previous version of OCR. error:PROC-33: Oracle Cluster Registry is not configured

This could mean either your cluster registry file is corrupt or you don't have access to the raw devices. Check the access to the shared storage raw device is valid. If this is not true, then make sure you have all your backup files ready.

How to use RAW partition for Oracle for placing data?
Dear all,
I have installed Oracle on a SUN machine and use database mount point /oracle which is a UFS system.
But now I would like to use RAW partition instead of a UFS system to place Oracle database data...
The installation guide mentions that database mount points have to be prepared before installation, could I just use /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s5 as database mount points after partitioning c0t0d0s5?
I am attempting to create a tablespace in the above partition... Could any experts tell me if the above works?
Thanks a lot!kwan,
Raw partion is used to store Oracle data files and not Oracle software. Oracle home is going be in regular file system. More than one file can not share the same raw device.
You create the raw device at the OS level using the OS command. Then create tablespace on Oracle and use the clause DATAFILE 'Raw file Name'
Hope this helps

OCFS2 , ASM and Raw Device for Voting Disk and OCR
Dear all ,
My manager assigned me to establish a 11gRAC , 3 node on OEL. He likes to locate ASM with datafiles , at the same time, 2 OCR vol on OCFS2 and RawDevice respectively , 2 voting disks on OCFS2 and RawDevice respectively also.
This really annoys me .
Oh all experts, could anybody give me some advices ? Can those stuff be co-existed ?Billy Verreynne wrote:

Not a great idea to introduce additional s/w layers between the CRS software and its OCR and voting disks. If ocfs2 is for example used as a shared file system for these devices (files), then the ocfs2 cluster s/w needs to be up and running, the shared devices mounted, before CRS can successfully start. Thus any problem with the ocfs2 stack, will impact on CRS. Why? What does ocfs2 buy you in this regard? What are the benefits that justifies the increased complexity and the dependency of CRS on another s/w layer?
Fewer moving parts means less complexity, less stuff that needs to be configured and can go wrong. In fact, some users had perception that " Pay mroe so that Get more". -
