RAW & DNG survey

Do you convert RAW files to DNG format. If so, why? If not, why?

I think it's too early to say if DNG will become a long term archival standard.
If you buy in wholesale to the Adobe ethic then DNG would appear to make more sense, although I'm less convinced about the XMP info. I really don't like separate sidecar type files, and if you store all the edit info in a central repository then you're effectively tied into that product through workflow at which point I don't see that it matters if you use native RAW or DNG.
Whilst the basis of non-destructive editing is a good idea, we all like the thought that we keep those untouched captured pixels, it's no guarantee that those edits will be applied identically forever more. Software changes even if the the RAW file and it's XMP contents don't.
I'm not overly precious about changing edit metadata in RAW files, Lr, ACR and even DPP will happily do so, although software errors such as those seen not so long ago are a bit of a pain.
I quite like Jeff Schewe's description of Hero RAW files, but in those cases, what matters more than ever IMO is the edited output file you create from them. Sure, at some point you may revisit that RAW if the software processing takes a big leap forward, but, if you sell a print that's popular and you don't archive the finished processed output then it might be a pain to explain why the product is now different. At some point you turn that hero RAW into dare I say it, a piece of art, hopefully. A revisit is a different piece of art, a new interpretation.
And for those items, well TIFF still seems to be the best choice.
So I think it's a moving target. I don't buy into the idea that somehow the camera manufacturers don't know how to get the best output from their device, and don't know about colour for example. The dyes used on the sensors are crucial to a cameras colour reproduction and the camera maker absolutely does know most about that. I do buy into the idea that camera makers know little about making good workflow software. Or general editing and processing software.
At what point does the DNG converter software drop support for old cameras? Never? If so, then presumably ACR can continue to support those old files too. If the DNG software can keep old formats going for all cameras from all makers then why shouldn't individual camera makers software continue to support all their cameras providing of course they are still in the business. If they do go bust or give up, if DNG converter or ACR still support the files, then you're not totally lost.
However, Lr etc, is more than just the RAW pixels, it's about the workflow and edits too, and those just don't seem to be portable. And would you really want them to be? If the RAW format was universal and the edits you could perform were part of a standard, where does the innovation and competition come from? IMO as soon as you go beyond the real raw RAW info, then you've gone partly proprietary, and then longevity becomes an open and moot point.
So no, I haven't gone DNG, yet. At present I like Lr's workflow so my edit info stays in the main catalogue. XMP files etc. no thanks.

  • RAW DNG sequence / Edit Original with ACR within Premier

I need to speak to a Adobe Premier expert. I have a RAW DNG sequence shot on my Canon 5d Mark 3 via Magic Lantern imported into my premier project now. I want to edit the DNG's image settings with ACR (adobe camera raw). So i right click on my DNG sequence / clip and go to Edit - Original . ACR pops up and i make my image modifications. I click ok but the DNG sequence doesnt change, its stays the same.
Now i can do all this without trouble within After Effects, but it just adds another step to my workflow. When it should be working within Premier. Im still waiting to see if ACR will ever work directly within Premier.

Maybe whoever answers your question can give me some insight. I imported my DNG sequences to After Effects, because Premier wouldn't import the DNG sequences,  and created a new comp for each of the shots I have. Later in Premier I imported all those AE comps. Now where would be the correct place to color correct and grade this? Straight in Premier? Or will I be loosing the flexibility of the DNGs? Should I do it instead in the AE comps? Or maybe it doesn't matter? Thanks for the help!

  • How do I process raw .dng or .pef from pentax k20d into .tiff 's (or jpegs) in aperture 3?

    hi all my friends!
how do I process raw .dng or .pef from a pentax k20d into tiffs or jpegs in aperture 3? (i have the trial only but will buy a3 if i actually can learn how to use it in 30 days...which i've failed so far)... the raw files are taking up too much space on my HDD. i understand how to change the colors, sharpness etc of the raw files. but how do i actually turn raw files into a tiff or jpeg to just keep in the library in aperture? i have no intention of keeping the raw's.. I just shoot raw to get better jpeg or tiff results.
also I would greatly appreciate some tips how to do this in batches fast and easy. I have yet to yield images so good i will actually want to spend time perfecting them. for now i just want an easy way to turn raw files into tiffs or jpegs with some standard or completely auto mode. i can do it in camera but it is time consuming.
and you cant convert raw to jpeg or tiff in iphoto, right?
    best regards, Joakim
p.s. and thank you who will answer this...i can't find the answer anywhere...tried for a whole day... d.s.

do you know if the raw files are some way made more compact when you shut down aperture? cause i mean, +20MB for a pic is a lot of space on the hard drive vs. 5MB for a jpeg or so...of course keeping your raws would be the optimum if they simply don't take that much more space than a jpeg... how does aperture do it? are the files "zipped" when not in use?
No, the size of the files doesn't change, Aperture doesn't compress or otherwise alter the masters.
and in either case, can you put the aperture archive/library somewhere else than on your local HD, like a portable 1 TB HD? mine is only 250 Gb or so and running low...
This is doable and most people running on laptops use this method in one form or another. The best results are  obtained by keeping the library on the internal HD but storing the masters on an external HD. The masters in this case are referred to as 'referenced' (when the masters are in the actual Aperture library they are referred to as 'managed' )
By putting the masters on an external disk but keeping the library on the internal you get the best of both worlds, reduced internal disk consumption and better speed accessing the Aperture library. If the library itself was on the external HD, especially if it was USB, you could notice decreased performance.
There has been much written about this type of setup here in the discussions. Searching the list here should get many articles discussing this topic with lots of very good advice.  Also spend some tim with the User manual, Apple did a good job with it and the fist few sections really explain the various bits of the library and the different ways to set it up.
As i wrote in my first question, is there an easy way to adjust the values of a 100 raw files automatically?
To adjust a large number of images try this: Select one image and adjust  it as you like. Then select Metadata->Lift Adjustments, a HUD will open. Now select the other 99 images and in the HUD that opened select Stamp Selected Images, all those 99 images will now have the adjustments you applied to the first image.
Again this is all covered in the manual.
    Good luck

  • Prerendert mp4 replace with RAW DNG in After Effects

    Hello,
I try to replace a mp4 clip with RAW DNG. The mp4 clip was made from the RAW DNG, but when I try to replace it, the length of the clip never fits.
    Details:
    1. RAW DNG recorded with 30fps
    2. RAW DNG with Media Encoder to 30 fps mp4 rendered
    3. mp4 import to AE
    4. Replace mp4 with RAW DNG
    Result:
    mp4 clip length = 08:19:12
    DNG RAW length = 06:39:04
The info window shows bith clips with 30fps .
Both clips shows: 0000000-0011973 (frame count from dng raw )
    All Settings on 30fps:
Media Encoder: "Media / Indeterminate Media Timebase: 30fps"
After Effetcs: "Import / Sequence Footage 30 fps"
Premiere. " Media / Indeterminate Media Timebase: 30fps" (just in case  - maybe encoder reference pp..i dont think so..but..)
What can I do? Im doing something wrong, or is it a software error?
Even if I dont replace, just import the raw dng to AE it show the shorter lenght, but as well 30fps in the info window.

    I did a testfile.
I exported a clip (30fps) to png sequence (60fps) and add it to the media encoder and when I press the button "match source" Media Encoder shows me (again) 23,976fps, but when I manually put it on 30fps it really export with 30fps. So I have a mp4 with 30fps
So I import that mp4 to AE its 03:29, when I import the pngs itself directly to AE its 03:29. So my setting seems to be correct. I choose the same settings importing RAW DNG.
I recognize that Media Encoder doesn`t recognize that the RAW DNG is a picture sequence, in the import window the "import sequenze square" is grey out, but it imports it as a the picture sequence, but not with the correct fps.
Its confusing, because it shows in the the clip info, after rendering the correct fps (30fps), but its not 30fps , its more like 23,976 frames. So it really looks that its a adobe software error.
    Is it?

  • Trouble converting RAW files with Camera RAW/DNG - CS4 Mac

    Hello!
I am using CS4, with Camera RAW 5.7 and Adobe DNG 5.7.  These are the versions listed as compatible with CS4.  I am using a new Canon Powershot S100.  Can I use newer versions of the RAW/DNG with CS4, or am I just out of luck? Please help!

Same story we hear again and again.
New camera, old software, and the often un-stated expectation that the software company should go out of its way to provide new camera support for free.  First thought by those in the know is "you bought a new camera, why do you feel you don't need to buy new software to go with it?"
Those same folks who bought a new camera might never consider asking a camera manufacturer to make their new camera compatible with their old software.  It's a funny disparity.
Adobe walks a tightrope of expectations.  As it turns out, when you download the latest free DNG converter version they actually DO provide new camera support for free - it's just that converting to an intermediate file format is not quite as integrated or convenient as using the latest version of Photoshop with native support for that camera to just open the files directly.  Nor do you get the SIGNIFICANT improvements in image quality that the newer converters provide.
Use the DNG converter, but if you care about your image quality you'll consider upgrading Photoshop.  They really have made strides in raw conversion.

  • Prerendert mp4 mit passenden RAW DNG erstetzen

    Hallo,
    3. mp4 in AE importiert
    4. Ersetzen mp4 with dng raw
    Ergebnis:
    mp4 Datei Länge = 08:19:12
    DNG RAW Länge = 06:39:04
Dabei werden im Info Fenster bei beiden Clips 30fps angezeigt
Beide Dateien zeigen : 0000000-0011973 (frame anzahl) an.
Soweit ich nachvollziehen kann stehen alle Settings auf 30fps:
Media Encoder: "Media / Indeterminate Media Timebase: 30fps"
After Effetcs: "Import / Sequence Footage 30 fps"
Premiere. " Media / Indeterminate Media Timebase: 30fps" (zur Sicherheit auch da)
Was kann ich da noch machen?

Antwort: Nachdem die DNG RAW Datei Sequenze in AME importiert wurde, auf den File-Namen , rechts klick, und "interpret footage" und dort die gewünschte Frame Rate einstellen...

  • Having trouble placing RAW / dng files in idesign 5.5. Any suggestions?

Having trouble placing RAW / dng files in idesign 5.5. Any suggestions?
Here's what i've done so far:
    Updated my raw plug in
I shoot on canon rebel t3-i

Open the RAW or DNG file in Photoshop as a Smart Object. Then save as a PSD file. Place the PSD in InDesign with File > Place
InDesign cannot place RAW files. However, if you use the workflow I suggest, you can still edit the RAW/DNG files if needed. To edit, choose Edit Original from the InDesign Links panel, and the PSD image will open up. Then double-click the smart object and it will open in Adobe Camera Raw. Saving the changes in PSD will update them in InDesign.

  • Ordering Prints from LR Raw/DNG

I've got a boatload of raw/dng photos I need to print. What's a good workflow for ordering prints from an online service?
Say something like Shutterfly? Looks like there's a plugin for LR. I'd like to avoid mass converting to Jpeg/srgb... is there any service that takes a raw/proPhoto rgb? Or is that overkill?

JPG highest quality, full resolution with sRGB should be good enough for a place like Shutterfly, unless they gprovide formats for special paper, then you can convert to those, but be sure you specify they have a custom profile and no auto-adjustments are to be performed, otherwise things won’t look right since they’re likely to assume sRGB for the profile.
Raw cannot have ProPhotoRGB associated with it since it is raw sensor data not RGB data.  And a raw file would be interpreted by the printing company using whatever software and settings they wanted, completely ignoring whatever you’d done in Lightroom.
What gives you the idea that you need to send raw photos, or even ProPhotoRGB photos?  Is the prints going to be in glowing or fluorescent ink.  I can’t imagine any other reason to use ProPhotoRGB as an image profile desitined for printed output since paper usually has a lower gamut than your monitor, even.   You use ProPhotoRGB with 16-bit TIFs for intermedia or archival perposes.  You wouldn’t want to use ProPhotoRGB with an 8-bit format or as a final output format for printed or display purposes since the gamut of the paper or display would be much smaller than ProPhotoRGB.  Normally you use ProPhotoRGB as an intermediate format for images that will be adjusted further.

  • Linear Raw dng set color order?

    Hi,
Is it possible to set the color order in a Linear Raw dng? I have B,G,R and not R,G,B. Is it possible to set this in the dng sdk as a tag? Or do I have to reorder my pixels?
    Thanks a lot,
    Greetings,

It actually does not matter what order the colors are in, as long as the color matrix tags use the same order.
(The colors don't need to be "red", "green", or "blue" either. They can be any three or four arbitrary colors in any order).

With regards to your .arw files:
You need to either purchase and install Lightroom 5.4 -- OR -- download and install and use the FREE Adobe DNG Converter version 8.4, did you actually launch and use the DNG Converter?
There should be no problem importing JPG files into Lightroom from your camera, what happens when you try? Is there an error message?

  • Nikon AW110 .NEF Files in Camera Raw / DNG Converter

I'm a bit new to NEF, and even RAW to be honest. But far as I can see both DNG converter 8.2 and Camera Raw (newest) is not happy with the .NEF Files from my Nikon AW110 camera. It won't open them.
Is this something that will just be updated in DNG or RAW sooner or later? I have an early release of the AW110 and naturally there is not too much support out for it yet.
Please let me know if I should be able to open these or not. It's no worry if there's nothing i can do about it yet, I just want to make sure my camera raw or photoshop isn't broken.
Trying on OS X 10.9 (and 10.8) Photoshop 14.1.2 and Camera Raw 8.2.0.94
    Thanks guys

ACR/DNG Converter 8.2 were released mid-Sept, which seems to be about the time or just before the Nikon 1 AW1 was available, so you’ll need to wait until at least the next release of ACR 8.3 / DNG 8.3 sometime in during late-Nov to early-Jan timeframe, I’d expect, unless there is something strange about that camera that requires extra time.
The first place ACR/DNGC are available is the release-candidate at Adobe Labs, so check back there from time-to-time:

Here is the list of currently supported cameras, where the Nikon 1 series is just above the Olympus section:

  • When opening a 6x4 landscape orientation raw (.dng) file in Photoshop CS5, it will automatically crop to a 4x6 orientation.  How can I change this?  I did not have this problem before now.

I need to know how to correct this so it doesn't automatically change the orientation.

That's new to me. I usually use the standalone dng converter to convert any raws to dng. Then I can open in Photoshop. Since I have never had this problem, the best I can do is to get you close to a fix if I don't have an exact answer. There is also a Camera Raw forum that can better advise you.
Adobe Camera Raw  Also since you mention Lightroom, see if they know anything. Photoshop Lightroom
Since I'm most experienced in Photoshop, I can only hand out stock troubleshooting that would just miss the problem. Photoshop CS5 does host ACR. Is this happening when you open the dng in ACR from Lightroom, and not after you open the dng from ACR into Photoshop?
Finally when a dialog box isn't working correctly. It's the Alt key on your keyboard that would change the Cancel button into Reset in ACR. It might not work if you are using a Bluetooth keyboard. (My screen capture keys won't let me show the Reset button)
So try that and if it fails, check out the other forums. If no one else joins this thread, I should tell you I"m out of ideas, can't seem to locate an answer, and I don't want to hold you up.

  • Camera Raw/DNG 6.7 not loading CS5 Extended (or Elements 11)

I install Camera Raw 6.7 for CS5 Extended.  Install successfull per Adobe Application Manager.  Successfully installed all updates.   I look in CS5  Edit>Preferences>Camera Raw and it says no plug in installed.   I attemp to open a Raw file (CRW/CR2) and it says wrong doc type.  Installed DNG converter 6.7 with a successful install.  But when DNG runs it crashes and I get the error message "Adobe DNG Converter has encountered a problem and needs to close...".   Same issue with PS Elements 11.  Not only are the file formats (Raw CRW and CR2) not even recognized, they do not appear in the open window greyed out as I've seen in other video demonstrations of the product.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled both products with virus/firewall protections disabled.   I have a AMD Athlon XP 3200+, 1.0 GB RAM Running XP Professional w/SP3 with 100+ GBs of available disk space.

I fixed the problem, it was simply a Preference Setting in Bridge.  I was in a directory with only jpg images.  Once I changed the preferences to allow ACR to open jpg everything is fine.  When I went to a directory with RAW images, they work fine now also.

  • Install RAW DNG Converter 7-2 from my desktop to Bridge and Photoshop?

I have a Sony A99 DSLR which is now supported by Adobe.  I downloaded the DNG (RAW) Converter 7_2 to my desktop.  How do I install it in Bridge and Photoshop?

DNG converter is a standalone tool. For Photoshop/ Bridge you need the corresponding version of Camera Raw (ACR). Refer to this:
