RAW editing workflow with Photoshop Elements 6

I have been using the following workflow with RAW images in iPhoto and editing them in Photoshop Elements 6. It seems to be working fine. Does anyone see a problem with my workflow???
I choose to edit in external editor (Elements 6), and the image opens in Camera Raw. I make my edits here because I really like the editing power of Camera Raw. After I am finished, I chose Save As and choose jpeg. The save dialog tries to save back to the Originals folder in the iPhoto Library that the RAW file came from, so I simply choose the appropriate event in the Modified folder and save it there. It replaces the jpeg that iPhoto had created when the original RAW file was imported. When I go back to iPhoto the changes are applied.
Now I realize that I can't reopen the original RAW file again in Elements without reverting to original, but that is usually not an issue. I also realize that messing with the iPhoto Library outside of iPhoto can be dangerous. Another drawback is that I haven't been able to open multiple RAW photos from iPhoto into Camera Raw so I can apply changes all at once.
But I can't see anything wrong with the workflow. Am I on the right track, or am I missing something?

No, I don't believe you can do that with RAW editing. By manually replacing the first modified version with your RAW edited version iPhoto will not update the thumbnail. You will be able to see the edited version if you go to the edit mode or full screen mode. But the thumbnail will not be identical. If that's OK with you then you should be able to go with that workflow.
If the edits are significant enough you might want to save the new file to the desktop and import as a new file.
You can try this on a copy of the iPhoto Library. Open the library package and move the contents of the Data folder to the trash along with the Thumb32Segment.data, Thumb642Segment.data and ThumbJPGSegment.data files. Then launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options. This will rebuild the thumbnail files and my reflect your edited versions. Again, make a backup copy of the library before trying this.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Camera RAW Editing with Photoshop Elements 7.0

I am editing Canon Camera RAW format images with Photoshop Elements 7.0.
When I try to use the Clone Stamp option, an error message indicates that I need to change to 8 bit color to continue. I am also aware that some feel that 8 bit color is good enough. I would like to keep the 16 bit color.
Will upgrading to Photoshop Elements 8.0 allow me to keep 16 bit color?
    Thanks
    Bob  AZ

No, as far as 16 bit support, pse8 is pretty much the same as pse7.
Pse9 is due out within a few months, so who knows whether more 16 bit support
    will be added or not.

  • Batch Editing with Photoshop Elements 4.0

I have an folder of photos which I would like to resize as a batch with Photoshop Elements 4.0. However, I am at a loss as to how to do it and am missing a step or two in my workflow.
I would appreciate any specific step by step suggestion that you may have.
    Thanks for your help.

    not for "batch editing"
You can set PSE as the external editor in the iPhoto preferences. iPhoto has the capability to directly interface with any external editor - simply go to the iPhoto preferences (iPhoto menu ==> preferences ==> General and set the Edit photo option to in external editor - select the desired external editor and you are set - now when you edit photos they are sent to the selected external editor and when you are finished editing you save (not save as) and the edited photo is returned to iPhoto, the original is maintained in iPhoto and the iPhoto database is correctly updated.
If you want the option of editing in either iPhoto or the external editor after selecting your external editor simply set the edit in back to main window - now when you right click (control Click) on a photo you will get a menu which allows you to select either.

You need camera raw 8.4 for your camera, if it’s Digital Rebel T5 EOS 1200D EOS Kiss X70. It is not compatible with PSE11; so it’s a bit odd if that software was bundled with the camera except that it will work with jpegs. I suggest you download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your CR2 files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the DNG files will editable in PSE11(keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.4
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • What is the best motherboard to use with Photoshop elements 11 premium edition?

I'm going to build my computer by selecting components and having Fryes service put them together. I'd like to build a system with a motherboard that supports 8 gb RAM, and a 250GB SSD drive (SATA III) with a 750gb or 1 TB  7500 rpm slave internal drive or an similar 7500 rpn external drive. The system I build will have usb 3 and hdmi ports with a dvd rom 24x drive. It will have a Windows 7 premium home edition OS. It will have an Nvidea video card with 2 gigs of independent ram.
I'm trying to build a PC that works efficiently with Photoshop Elements premium version 11. I am a casual home user. I will be doing some basic video rendering of DVD home videos that I have converted to dvd from VHS and 8mm format.. I am NOT a gamer.
I have a monitor and therfore I'm only interested in building a desktop box with thease specs and I'd like to get the best quality componenets for my desktop build for $1300 or less.
I'm not interested in anything from Dell (alienware).
Any motherboard recomendations or criticism/recomendations of other components I want to use will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

It’s really a personal choice. I’ve recently bought a new Dell. Like you I was not interested in the consumer products so I purchased a business spec machine and I’m very happy with it. It’s Dell Precision T3600 with Intel Xeon CPU and Nvidia Quadro 2000 graphics card. Running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit with 8gb RAM. I got 1TB and 500gb drives both 7500 rpm with a 3TB Seagate external HD. I gave SSD a miss until prices drop further. I don’t think the extra speed is that relevant to Photo editing although perhaps more relevant to video rendering. I’m also not gaming or running other apps that might benefit from an SSD. Photoshop Elements is a 32 bit program which runs well on 64 bit systems but cant use more than 1.5 to 2GB of RAM. Premiere Elements has 64 bit support and can therefore take advantage of the extra RAM. At the end of the day it’s your choice.

  • Iphoto Editing with Photoshop Elements 9

I am going into Iphoto, clicking the Edit button and it brings up Photoshop Elements 9.  I make changes, they
look OK so I save it.  When I get back to IPhoto, it looks like the change has been made.  However when I go
back later in the day and click on the updated photo and there is a triangle with an exclamation point in the middle.
This means it can't find the original.  They're all located in Iphoto, what is happening?  Why does it look like the changes
are make and then I can't find them?

I do use a Mac, so I don¹t think versions is an issue. I would rather
pictures edited in PSE, which began life in iPhoto, should always be saved
back to iPhoto, as they were in Elements 8. That is not happening. Neither
do I know where to find pictures that PSE has saved.

    >> The save dialog sees an original and asks for permission to change it.
If you see the save as dialog you don't have your saving files preference set
correctly. To make versions, you must set it to Save over Original.
However, note that there is a big ol' bug in the mac version that if you even
open that particular preference window (even if you don't change anything
there) PSE will no longer add file extensions when you save. When using PSE as
external editor it doesn't matter so much, but if you ever save to the desktop
you will need to add the file extension manually to the saved file.

  • Problem with editing Aperture photos with Photoshop Elements 10

When I try to edit with Photoshop Elements 10, Aperture makes a tiff file, starts Photoshop Elements 10 and get to a screen where I have a choice between "editing" or "managing" files.  I select editing but when i finally get the editing screen there is no photo to edit.  Process worked fine in Elements 9 and Aperture 3.1. Anybody been able to roundtrip with Aperture 3.2.1 and Photoshop Elements 10?

(Aperture 3 and PSE 10; Lion; using Referenced files in Aperture)
I tried Barbara's recommended method and PSE now opens with the image displayed and accepts edits.  However, when I save the adjusted image, what I get in Aperture is a TIFF file of that name but with no edits displayed.
When I go to the directory in which the referenced files are located, the adjusted file exists and I can view it.
So, (at least as I have things configured), when accessing PSE from Aperture I am able to make adjustments and save the adjusted file, but the adjusted file does not display in Aperture.
Is anyone having success with Barbara's method using referenced files?
I hope it is not necessary to do a separate import to get the adjusted file to display in Aperture - which would make PSE totally impractical for use.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Best workflow - iPhoto + Photoshop (Elements) or simply drop iPhoto?

    Hi everyone.
I am an amateur photographer but I like to take good pictures and have them look at least semi-pro. My wife and I have been using iPhoto for years to organize our photos. Some basic editing is also done in iPhoto.
However, the biggest reason to use iPhoto is the ease of organization and the sharing features (share via email, Facebook, etc. right from iPhoto).
I am ready to move to Photoshop (via Photoshop Elements, I don't need the full program). But I am not sure it is easy to go from iPhoto to Elements.
    Would you recommend:
    1. using iPhoto + Elements (how? right click a picture in RAW and "edit with external editor"?)
    2. simply organize and edit it ALL with Photoshop Elements and forget iPhoto (is there an easy way to import the iPhoto Library with at least some of its organization elelemtns like albums, RAW pictures and dates into Adobe Bridge or Elements?)
Please help, what would be the best workflow?
Maybe Lightroom or Aperture? (which don't seem to offer the same features as Photoshop or Elements)...

We need to clarify a few things.
You cannot edit a RAW file.
A RAW is a dump from the camera's sensor. All the data that the sensor "saw" is poured into this container. Nothing can be done with this data. It can't be printed or anything else. All that can be done is to process this data into a usable form - that is to a recognised graphic format: jpeg, tiff, png etc.
In a point and shoot camera this process is done automatically by the camera. With high end P&S and with dSLR you can either have it done for you in the Camera or do it yourself.
When you use Aperture you are doing it yourself... Processing the RAW into a working format.
So, in the iPhoto version you would send the RAW to the Elements, +process it to a jpeg (or whatever)+ and save that jpeg to the desktop and then import it.
Oddly, iPhoto and Aperture share exactly the same engine for processing RAWs. You've just got more fine control (read: knobs and sliders) with Aperture. If you're content to process your RAWs in iPhoto then it's the same machinery as Aperture.
    With Aperture here's what happens:
You import the RAW and process it. Aperture records your processing decisions +in a database+ and next time you view the pic applies them live as you view it. (This is why the Hardware requirements for Aperture are much higher than for iPhoto). Again, if you want to print, Aperture makes a printable version on demand.
There is nothing to be gained (that I know of) from sending the RAW to Elements from Aperture.
If you want to further edit in Elements Aperture will send a processed tiff to Elements for work (or psd - it's a setting in the Preferences).
    1. I have a lot of pictures which were RAAW and I edited in iPhoto without knowing it would convert them to JPEG as soon as I hit the "edit" button. Now, when I import to Aperture, will Aperture import BOTH the original RAW file AND the edited JPEG version?
iPhoto did not convert those files to Jpeg. It preserved the RAW and processed the file and saved the output as a jpeg. Want to see your actual RAW? File -> Export: *Kind: Original*.
Yes, if you use Aperture's Import iPhoto Library option it will bring it all over. But experiment first, because some folks don't like this and prefer to only bring over the RAWs and re-process them in Aperture.
    3. Will Aperture preserve the organization I had in place (e.g. tags, albums, faces, etc.)?
Yes and No. I'm fairly sure that it brings over Events and Albums. It definitely brings over tags and keywords. It certainly does not bring over Faces. Faces are not part of any standard metadata at this time, and Aperture (and LR) has no way to work with them.
My advice always when considering a change like this is to download the trial, import a couple of hundred pics and explore and see what happens when you press this button or that.
    Regards
    TD

The "restore disk" is built into the Mac. See About Recovery.
Need more specifics about what error messages you got while installing Adobe Flash.
However, you can almost avoid Flash altogether by setting YouTube to play the HTML5 version instead.

I don't know about the sound issue. Might be hardware as you think. Try other headphones to check.

    Hi Christoph and WarriorAnt,
Thank you both for the replies.
I don't know anything about GarageBand because I've never used it. I've never used any music software before, (other than iTunes, Ha!)
I don't have GarageBand on my Mac because it wasn't stock on the old Powerbook G4, so I would have to buy it. I'm happy to do that if I can figure out that it does what I want ... but I'm overwhelmed by the info at Apple's site. Too much for a beginner like me. Even the wikipedia.com entry for GB uses too many terms I don't know, so I'm easily lost.
I just want to be able to set up drum loops and play along with them. The main thing is that I'm able to use third party loops. There are so many really amazing loop products out there ... jungle drums, acoustic jazz drums, lounge, etc. I don't want to get caught up in anything proprietary (like Band-In-A-Box) because the selection is limited. I'm sure GarageBands loops are great, but I want access to all these other third party loops as well ... loops that were not specifically made for GarageBand.
Will GarageBand let me drop in any and all drum loops from these other companies?
And does GarageBand work like a basic sequencer, where I can program up an intro, X number of measures of a loop, then a turnaround, then a variation loop, then an ending, etc?
I know the high-end stuff like Native Instruments Kontakt does this, but unfortunately it also does a kazillion other professional-level things I will never need and don't want to pay for (and which make the software more complex and daunting).
Thank you again, both of you, for responding and helping me with this project.
Just a little more advice on those two questions would really go a long way.

  • Can I link iPhoto with Photoshop Elements Editor?

The new AppStore PSE Editor doesn't seem to link with iPhoto like the full version

If you're referring to iPhoto on your Mac:
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note 1: screenshots are from PSE 10
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.
Be sure to select the correct item in the Adobe Photoshop Elements folder as the external editor in iPhoto:

Is there a way to convert .wmv's to .gif's with Photoshop Elements 10?  If not, will an up upgrade to version 12 include something that will do this?

I have done it manually, and it takes a long time just for 1 patch.
Just the sample editing and naming takes hours!
    Autosampler automates this process.
You can define how many velocity levels you need.
If a midi CC changes the sound in an interesting way, you can have Autosampler send the controller in increments and sample that.
At the end of it, you end up with a finished EXS instrument.
