RAW  file converting to jpg?

How to I convert a RAW file to a JPG format without opening the RAW file in ACR?
Richard Cooper

Colin, I started shooting RAW very near the beginning of my digital experience, way back in 2002 (!). Back then, I simply ran them through the Canon converter with no adjustments; ACR wasn't an option in Elements at the time. However, I did save all those RAW originals, and, on occasion, I've gone back to some of them, adjusted them with ACR and Elements, and wound up with a better edited photo.
On the other hand, the ones I took in JPEG before discovering RAW....they are what they are, permanently blown highlights and all.
Disk space, DVD's and even CF cards (1 GB are now $50 in some US stores) are so attractively priced now that I don't even think twice about whether or not to shoot in RAW. The camera is set on that 24/7.
Just one person's approach...
Chuck

  • RAW files converted to JPGs - why?

Pics shot in RAW format in my Minolta A2 camera appear correctly as MRW files of 11.6mb each when imported into iPhoto. However, when I look for them in the iPhoto Library (in their correct catalogue position under year/month/date) they are displayed as JPG files. This used not to happen, and other iPhoto users say their files are corrctly tagged as RAW. Conversion to JPG of course means loss of quality with compression, negating the whole purpose of shooting in RAW. I should be able to import photos from the iPhoto Library into Photoshop as RAW files for processing there before export and any compression. Something seems to have changed, but I can't figure out what. Any suggestions?

First off, editing a RAW image results in the modified photo being saved in JPG format. The original RAW image is still there however. If you want something lossless, check your iPhoto preferences. There is a setting that causes edited RAW images to be converted to TIFF, or you can have it send RAW files to an external editor. Note that RAW is just an electronic negative format. In order to do anything with it anyway, there is a rasterization phase that converts it to JPEG or TIFF or some other format for editing and printing.
Bring up iPhoto help, and search for keywords "edit RAW". There is an item "Working with photos taken in RAW format" that will give you more information.

  • Adobe X PDF files converted to jpg, edited and converted back to PDF have ragged, unclear text.  I didn't have this problem with Acrobat 9 standard.  What is the remedy for this.  If this is the best I can expect, I won't be able to use X standard.

I can't imagine any worse workflow than converting to JPEG to edit text, then back to PDF. Text in a PDF is a vector thing, smooth at all resolutions. And JPEG is made for photos. EVERY conversion to JPEG and back loses quality but how much loss there is will vary.
If you must go to an image format, try PNG.

  • Sony RX100 raw files converted with DNG converter not recognizable

Since  installing Maverick 10.9.4 on the Mac, Sony RX100 raw files converted with DNG converter are no more recognizable.
    Somebody else the same problem?

I know my DNG files themselves and the info they contain are fine. But they're not properly supported in Mavericks 10.9.4 and I don't plan on switching to Windows. A file that I converted to a DNG using Adobe software is now listed as an unrecognized file in OSX. No thumbnails, no iPhoto, no Aperture. Essentially, no support. And this is a problem. A quick search will show you people with various Sony cameras (A7, RX100 mkI and mkIII, at least) having the same problem.
No matter where the blame falls, the simple fact is that if you shoot with various Sony cameras, use Adobe software to convert the file to DNG and happen to be an OSX user, you're files are no longer compatible with OSX or Apple's photo software. They will only open in Adobe software. You literally get a warning message from OSX saying, this is an unsupported file type when you try and open it.
Like I said previously, I've had a managed iPhoto library for about 5 years now, numerous hours of tagging and organzing, and every DNG file converted from a Sony ARW RAW is currently unsupported. Original ARW files work just fine. It's nuts. Maybe it's Adobe's fault. Maybe it's Apple's fault. It really doesn't matter. If DNG is not a reliable standard format under certain edge cases (Sony ARW, DNG converter, OSX Mavericks), it's not a reliable standard format at all. I just hope that Apple or Adobe figures this out, so that I can get those photos back.
In the mean time, certain users such as myself just can't rely on DNG. End of story.

  • Where can I download raw file converter for panasonic gh4

Is aperture raw file converter compatible with Panasonic GH4

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH4?  That camera is not yet supported, see the list of currently available RAW support:  http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html
It usually takes a few month after the release of a new camera for the RAW support to be available. As a work-around, use the software that comes with the camera (probably SILKYPIX Developer Studio), to convert your RAW to a different lossless format (e.g. TIFF), while you are waiting.

  • Raw file converter for Canon EOS 5D Mark iii ?

When will Aperture 3 have a raw file converter for Canon's new 5D model? Should I work with JPEGs in the mean while or is there another better solution?
    Best regards, Markus

    Markus,
    see this long thread
Canon 5D Mk III - RAW update?
I would shoot in raw+jpeg while you are waiting and use the Adobe dng converter,
    see Adobe's Camera Raw Converter
Then, when the raw is supported by Aperture, reprocess your masters.

  • Strange colour spots (red & green) appear after RAW files converted to JPEG, anyone know how to fix it?

Strange colour spots (red&green) appear after RAW files converted to JPEG, anyone know how to fix it? Thanks.

I use "Export" function to convert the picture from RAW format to JPEG format, resolution 240 pixels per inch. Strange red dots appeared in the area supposed to be dark grey, as per the picture below. The red colour does not appeared in the original RAW picture when viewing from Lightroom, only exist in the JPEG it created. Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks!

I am unable to download my Canon 6D RAW files via Lightroom  CS4 and tried to get a DNG converter that will work.
Please advise the optimum version I need to download to get my RAW files converted. Many thanks Bev

The 6D was supported since Lightroom 4.3 and Camera Raw 7.3.

  • IPhoto importing RAW, then converting to jpg--losing RAW file completely

Okay, I've read through some of the posts on similar issues, but I still have some questions. I've always used iPhoto to import my RAW files (since it supported it anyway) and never had problems. I bought a new G5 and it seems like this problem has shown itself since. I went back to my G4 though, and found that all my old .NEF's are now jpg's as well. If I do a search on my computer for .NEF's it brings back nothing having to do with .NEF files.
In the past I've imported using iPhoto because of the ease of keeping track of the original files. After importing I open them in Photoshop CS with Camera Raw. I cannot do this now. The weird thing is that viewing it in iPhoto the extension that it shows is .NEF, but when I look at the file in the Finder it shows that it's a .jpg. Was there an update recently that changed anything considerably? This is a very frustrating problem. JPG files are pretty worthless to me because I can't get the same amount of info/size out of them.
Any insights to this would be very appreciated.
    Thanks.
EDIT: I've forgotten to include other info. My camera is a Nikon D70 (supported by Apple). I'm using all the latest versions of OS X, and iPhoto. I have PS CS.

    Hi heloguy,
Did you look in the Originals folders on each date?
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.

  • Why can't i save an edited .raw file as a .jpg

I am using PSE 10 and with other catalogs i had no problem of editing my .raw files (6.7version) and then opening them and after further editing doing a "save as" and saving it as a .jpg file in a version set.
now I am working with another set of picture files and when i try to save the final edited it suggests:
ed-1.psd and the drop down menue also lists: psd, pdd, pse, .raw, png and TIFF.(there are no layers in the file)
search of FAQ was unsuccessful. I have avague recollection of having this similar problem years ago with other earlier versions of PSE but can't remember the solution. This is my first instance of this problem. Other info that may help is i believe this is a "converted catalog" from PSE 8. I am running on WIN 7 Prof, 64 bit
    Appreciate any help
    Dan Y
I went back to a previous different catalog>same computer, same PSE10 and selected a previous version set consisting of the original >raw file and the saved edited file ed-1.jpg and selected the original .raw file, opened full edit, it opens in ARW 6.7 as before, then opened the file in the PSE10 editor and tried to save as a .jpg ( which i obviously did in the last few days at most)(no changes made to computer or programs) and it WOULD NOT OPEN AS A .jpg AS DESCRIBED ABOVE.
    HOPE THIS HELPS

You are possibly working with a 16 bit image. Before clicking the Open Image button in the camera raw dialog change the drop down to 8 bit and you should then be able to save as jpeg.

  • Imported raw files show as jpg

Since updating to Lightroom2 (currently 2.6), whenever I import a RAW file from iPhoto - selecting to leave the photo in it's original location - it shows as a .jpg file once it is imported into Lightroom 2.  With Lightroom 1 it would import as a RAW file.  Is there a setting I need to select to keep Lightroom from automatically converting my RAW files to JPG on import?

Thanks for your help. It worked as you suggested except the corresponding jpg file that was made by the camera is imported into Lightroom along with the RAW file. Unfortunately, my Canon 400D will not shoot RAW files only, you have to have a large size JPEG along with it which is a waste of file space, but nothing that can be done to shoot RAW only.  So at the very least I can import RAW files as you suggest and then delete the JPEG. As far as iPhoto goes, I've been using it for many years and like it a lot.  I find it easier and more intuitive than Lightroom's organizational tools.  Lightroom is an exceptional tool for printing or prepping a final image for electronic distribution and that's how I use it. In short, I use each application for what it does best.  I only color correct, print or publish less than 1 or 2% of the thousands of images I shoot. Thanks again for solving this mystery!

  • Canon 6D RAW file converter

I am a PS CS5 user and recently purchased the new Canon 6D.  I have downloaded the RAW files from my camera, but PS won't read them (Canon software will).  I was given the sugestion to convert them from RAW to DNG with the Adobe convertor so I can use them in PS CS5.  It looks like the Adobe RAW convertor does not support the new Cannon 6D files yet.  What are my options to have PS read my RAW files other than shooting in JPEG?  Thanks!

I am having the same problem! I figured out how to convert but now a new problem! Can someone explain this...
The photo that I have taken is 19.1 MB
I had to download the DNG converter for my CS5 to read the file.
When I take the photo into CS5 my Camera RAW window opens up (before it goes directly into Photoshop).
I tweak my pic and then hit open...it opens in photoshop and then I save my file to jpg....and the file size is now 9MB...why is this happening? Why is it going from 19 to 10?! I dont want to lose that much?
Can someone help out? This may be an easy fix?!

  • D300 RAW files converted to TIFF Anomally

Ok....heres the thing! I recently spent 2 months in Argentina working on shootshorses.com. I used a Nikon D300 RAW (12mb) and downloaded everything (70 gig) to an 80 gig ipod. Aperture at this point could not read the nikon nef file so viewed them in nikon view nx, picked 50 or so I wanted, converted to 16 bit tiff on desktop and imported to Aperture. (now 77mb files)
When upgrade for aperture 2 came out, installed and attached ipod and imported all the work. Started working on some of the same images in the new projects in order to uplaod more to web site. wanted to lift and stamp changes from tiff files and apply to freshly imported raw duplicate files then delete much larger tiff files. Point...the identical stamped changes make a completely different image.
Checked the new raw file against the previous tiff file with no adjustments on either, on screen (apple 30 inch) and the tiff files blow the raw masters away for depth and sharpness. do not understand why as they are both the original Raw file from the ipod.....Question is, why is this? Suddenly the raw files really look digital and the tiff files have a depth that approach the work done on the kodak DCS pro.... and that is a bench mark!
If anyone has any explanations it would be great. Many thanks
    A perplexed David Sinclair.

AHHH... . amazed there is such a notable difference.... simple really. Only problem ,natural I suppose, Capture nx being same manufacturer, but makes me ask what else might be missed in the way of picture quality with Aperture. Many thanks for your answer

  • Raw file opens as jpg

Can somebody help me. I am running CS3 on MacOS X. with Camera Raw 4.1 plugin.
When I open RAW file it is opened on in RAW editor but in Photoshop as a Jpg file with different name.
    example:
    initial file:L1010860.RAW
when it is opened in photoshop the name changes to: L1010860_2.jpg

    >Photoshop cannot open RAW files; only Camera Raw can.
While Photoshop can not open a raw file without a helper application, the statement that only Camera Raw can open raw files is not true. A common problem encountered by Nikon users is that the Nikon NEF plugin overrides ACR and the raw file is opened in it rather than ACR. The Bibble plug in can also open raw files in Photoshop. Alexinna's problem appears to be related to iPhoto and may be analogous to the problem with the Nikon NEF plugin.
