Raw file disappeared

I have a folder in LR4 where all the raw files have disappeared but the thumbnails are still there and the library and develop icons are still in the lower right corner. Fortunately I have a backup but I'd like to know what happened.  I've tried to look  to look at a sample of other folders to see if I have that problem anywhere else but I haven't found another folder with this problem.
Is the HD going or could I have done something to make this happen?

Lightroom is telling me that. I can open the image in PS5.
Just reading back over my initial question. I should have said that the EMPTY  thumbnails are still there with the library and develop adjustment icons in the lower right corner of the thumbnail.

  • Raw files disappearring in Lightroom

It maybe something I am doing (still learning program) but it seem sometimes when I edit a file (source being Canon camera raw, 5D, XTi and 1D MK2N) the raw file no longer appears in Lightroom (edited file does if saved to psd or similar format). The files are still on my hard-drives and if I try to re-import it states they are already in the library but indicates the edited file name (that is if I have edited in CS2 and saved as x.psd, even when I select the cr2 file it refuses to import it as x.psd exist in library already, x is generally the original file name). If I save as x_something.psd then this does not occur. Whilst I understand the need to protect the raw files, it makes no sense to hide them after edit - it as if Lightroom is only looking at the name not the extension and only seeing those extension is sees as being related to Adobe PS products. This is annoying and I often save a copy of the raw file, a tiff copy, a jpg copy and psd copy with the same name just a different extensions.

As I understand it, but I have not tried LR Mobile, you have to have the raw files on a real computer and then sync the smart previews from LR desktop to the iPad.  I am still trying to get my head around a real use case for a non professional enthuasist photographer.

  • When I open several Raw files and edit one, the others disappear

Sometimes I open numerous raw files simultaneously and they appear on the left in a sidebar. Then I choose one to edit and when finished the others have disappeared and I have to load them again. Is there a keystroke that will bring them back without entirely reloading? Are they still in PSE but hidden? This seems like peculiar and poor design. (Mac version)

Using Preview is quite simple. I open the group of files I want to view and edit. I select one and drag it on top of the PSE icon in the dock, and it opens in the PSE raw editor. When I've saved the file I simply click on the Preview dock icon to return to that app. and repeat the select-and-drag to PSE. Preview provides a full screen display of file icons for the files I want to edit, so it is quite quick and transparent.
I don't necessarily want to Open a file; I might simply Save it from the raw editor. If I have 10 raw files, five of which I want to edit and Open, 3 of which I don't want to edit, and 2 of which I want to Save within the raw editor, the simplicity you describe disappears. Using my Preview-to-PSE scheme, I work on one file at a time and dispose of it when done. I don't have to keep track of which file needs what disposition, as seems to be the case in the process you describe. Please correct me where I'm mistaken.

  • Highlights disappear from RAW files

I have a bunch of raw photos that I took from a dinner party. When I use Adobe Bridge (Windows Vista 64)to view them, the raw files look great. If I double click to open one in camera raw and then make no changes at all, just click to save it as a jpeg with the highest quality, the catchlights in people's eyes and any sparkles on jewelry nearly disappear. Do I have something set wrong? I know you lose detail going from raw to jpg, but it should not lose this much. The catchlights nearly fade out completely.
    Thanks for any advice.
    Jean

    Hello,
Thanks for responding. I hardly ever accept the default ACR settings. My problem was that I was NOT making any changes to the RAW file. All I wanted to do was to convert it to a jpg. I think my problem was with Adobe Bridge, though, because once I opened it up in Photoshop, it looked much better, even though it looked horrible in Bridge.
In fact, now Bridge is giving me a different problem. After I save a file as a jpg, it shows up in my Bridge browser. If I click to view it in bridge, the bottom half is completely obliterated with horizonal colored bands. (Looks like the graphics card dying, except it's only in Bridge.)Only random files this happens with. If I open that same file in any other program, it's fine. Aargh!

  • Can't open canon raw files in cs4

I recently had to rebuild my pc after a problem that stopped a few of my programs working (I'd installed xampp so I could use wordpress on the pc but it stopped cs4, firefox, video studio and a bunch of other stuff working - removal and reinstalling did no use, I had to build a new disc).
I reinstalled cs4 and got all the updates but now I find I can't open can raw files with cs4 or bridge. I tried replacing the Camera Raw.8bi file with the latest file from adobe as per their web instructions but it still doesn't work. So I tried the adobe dng convertor (version 8.3) and ran the files through that, still no luck, I can't open the files.
I could open them wwith canons own software and save as a tiff, but then I'm losing a lot of information.
I'm still running vista home premium - no I can't upgrade to windows 8.1 and use the latest photoshop and lightroom software because 8.1 doesn't work with my nikon scanner or my epson large format printer. It doesn't like a few other items I have either.
I remember I had to download a few files a couple of years ago when I first bought the pc (a whole 3 years ago) as I was having trouble with photoshop and raw files then but I can't remember the name of the file or where I got it from.
Anyone able to help? much appreciated if you can.

    Hi John,
Adobe told me to replace the relevant file, which I did. The trouble is that went I do this then 'camera raw' disappears from the 'help / plugins' list and there doesn't seem to be any way of getting back other than uninstalling and reinstalling cs4, and once I do this it overwrites the files again...
I can't remember having this trouble when I first installed it a couple of years ago but I do seem to remember having to replace a file somewhere but that may have been on an earlier version.
    I have an old EOS 5d mk1 & a 7d mk1, so it's not as though the camera is unknown to cs4.

  • Raw Files Appear Deleted or Corrupted Suddenly in Aperture with Unsupported Image Format Error

I have been using Aperture 3, latest update, for the past year. Today, I tried to import new raw files from my new Sony RX1r and, as far as I can see, all raw files in Aperture give the "Unsupported Image Format" and alert symbol in the library where not only new files should be, but also ALL PREVIOUS RAW FILES. These files do no even show up as existing in the iPhoto Library.
This is, needless to say, distressing, as hundreds and hundreds of photos seem lost. Also, the files show a reduced pixel size and file sizes all go to .5 Mb. Some of the photos seemed to show up initially and look fine until I tried to open them, then they all either disappear or show the Unsupported Image Format instead of the opened file. I have tried rebuilding the iPhoto library, but no help.
I have looked in these discussions and see similar problems with Aperture. Perhaps, Apple has not made an update for the RX1r from the RX1 for raw files, but why should all older raw files now be corrupted, especially those recently made with my Olympus OM-D? Had no problem with Aperture until this disaster.
    Please help.
    William

Just an update. Restarted computer and attempted rebuilds of iPhoto library a couple more times and finally files and photos mostly recovered, except for those I had tried to open. Aperture seems to have a problem, or a host of them, dealing with RAW files, and there is no update yet for the Sony RX1R for Aperture or iPhoto. Lightroom 5, on the other hand, seems to work great with these files directly, so that will be where all photos go for now. Will iPhoto and Aperture just become old archives? It is so infuriating that Apple does not allow for simple importing and exporting compatibility with such an excellent program as Lightroom 5 just to protect their somewhat poorly supported Aperture. I've been a staunch Apple supporter and user since the 80's, but having more doubts about the direction this company is taking.

  • Can't find a raw file that was just on my fash card. need help.

I shoot raw/jpg.  I viewed in Digital Photo professional and transferred a Tiff to photoshop. I saved the image on a seperate disc. when I opened and tried to save again I received an error saying I didn'thave permission. I finally saved the psd version by changing the name of the picture. when I went back to the raw file on my flash card it was gone.  when I went back to the tiff file that was gone to. the only file I have left is the jpg back up and the psd version.  All the other pictures are still on both the flash card and my backup drive except this one. I've done recovery searches and they recover everything i've deleted from the flash card except the file I need.  I don't understand why this happend. I've tried searching for hidden files etc. I didn't delete this file. the recovery program shows that it is there it just won't get it. it gets everything else but not this one.  both the raw and the tiff files disappeared from two different drives. I want to get the raw file back.  Help!

Recovery programs can only recover file that have beed deleted when the media space they occupied has not reused and written over.  So if the recovery program did not recover your images. I would be willing to bet some of the space the image occupied has been written over.  So it can not be recovered even though its delete directry enter can be read its data is no longer intact.
Without a system trace you have to rack your brain the remenber all you did.  To get a clue to what wrote to your flash card. Its best to just copy file off flash cards onto your hard disk and remove the card from the card reader with the files still on the flash card.  After processing your images on your computer its a simple quick process to format the flash card in camera.

  • IPhoto deleted all my RAW files when transferring??

All my RAW files, 30 GB, from my summre holiday, just disappeared. Are there any way to recover them?? This was what happened:
    1) I was in Sweden on holiday, brought my Macbook and left my iMac at home
    2) I took a lot of picutres, and transferred them over to my Macbook after every day/photo ocassion
    3) I got back home with 30 GB of photos on my Macbook, to transfer to my iMac as to edit them there, with better speed and bigger screen
    4) I transferred all the pictures by copy them from iPhoto and paste them into a USB stick, then insert them into Aperture
    5) When I now start to edit in Aperture, I notice that all the photos are JPEG. Before, in iPhoto, one RAW and on JPEG would be displayed, but after copied into Aperture, they are both JPEG. They will be named for instance "IMG_3241" and "IMG_3241 2", but both files are JPEG!
    6) I already deleted the original files from my Macbook, so all that remains are double sets of JPEGs
How the **** can it be this way? I really copied RAW and JPEG into the USB stick, but then they come out as only JPEG, and a double set of JPEG as well.
Anyone got idea on how to recover those RAWs? Maybe this thread can also serve as warning for people not repeating the same mistake.
Now all the holiday pics are useless. Thanks Apple!

    4) I transferred all the pictures by copy them from iPhoto and paste them into a USB stick, then insert them into Aperture
How exactly did you do the transfer? If you copy and paste from iPhoto, you will only copy the preview images (jpeg files), even if the original images are raw. The same will happen, if you drag from iPhoto. So your USB stick probably only contained jpegs. To export your original raw files, you need to use the file menu:
File > Export > (Kind: Original)
The best way to import from iPhoto to Aperture would be to import the iPhoto library into the Aperture library. This way you will transfer all your edits.
Do you have a backup of your iPhoto Library?
If you did not work with your MacBook recently after deleting the iPhoto Library, you might try to use recovery software, like Disk Drill, to recover your original raw files.

  • Aperture 3: problem when re-processing raw files to the latest converter

After converting to Aperture 3, many of my Nikon D80 raw files are coming up with the message:
"This photo was adjusted using an earlier version of Apple's RAW processing."
Aperture 3 offers a "Reprocess" button next to the message. Every time I click it, the images gets messed up with a big spike in the highlight end of the green channel. Is this a bug? Anyone else seeing this?

I faced the same problem when importing from my card reader. I chose to save the A3 library on a removable disk. The importing took ages to finish, and then all the pictures had a green color. It said that the pictures were processed using an earlier Apple Raw processor, and I had the Reprocess button. I did that and nothing changed.
I restarted A3, and now my project has disappeared even though it is available on disk.
I opened the original library on my MB hard disk and the photos showed fine.
I'm going to retest this, by importing the pictures to the default A3 library, maybe it will then recognize my pictures and process them correctly.
EDIT: when importing to the default Aperture Library (not the one on a separate drive), it's very fast, correct, and no problems. I'll guess I'll have to backup the old way...

  • Raw File conversion to Tiff or Jpeg - best workflow for multiple files in Photo Shop Elements 11

Hello, I am pretty new to shooting in raw and Photoshop Elements (11).  I have one big problem. Once I open Elements up and load the Raw files from the SD card it shows them all on the left side in Camera Raw. I make my contrast and color adjustments if needed, but then my problem starts: I do not really want to make any further adjustments in Elements itself, but in order to save my Raw files either as Tiff or Jpeg it seems like I need to - through clicking on the "open image". Now it only opens up that one particular photo. I did not manage to go simply back to Camera Raw to grab the next one as the screen just disappears. However, this one by one process is of course not the preferred way. I know that there is batch processing, but am also not sure if my adjustments that I did in Camera Raw will carry over as I am actually never saving anything and would like to avoid saving it before all manually as .dng files as it would just be another extra step. I hope I could make clear where I have problems and what I would like to achieve and hope you can help me. Many thanks in advance.
    Philip

Simply select and edit each picture thumbnail from the left panel without clicking 'Done' or 'Open'.
When you have edited each individual picture, select all your thumbnails - click on the first one - shift click on the last one. They should be all highlighted.
    Then simply click 'Done'.
Your edits are saved in sidecar xmp files.
If the thumbnails are not yet automatically updated, select the files, right click and choose 'Update thumbnail'.
No need to use the editor with 'Open as' if you don't want any further edit or jpeg/tiff/psd/png version.
    Edit:
I am not sure I have understood your question.
The above process lets you convert and edit a batch of raw files without opening the editor.
If you want to get jpeg or tiff files from the already edited raw files, either use the 'process multiple files' of the editor or the 'export' feature from the Organizer.
The common raw workflow in Elements consists in converting small batches as explained above to take advantage of applying common edits or individual differences. In some cases you want to open the editor, in others not.
    That's at the input time.
When you want to output pictures, the selection of picture is different for each purpose. You'll include pictures edited in different batches, some still in raw format, others already converted in version sets to jpeg/tiff... For each output purpose, those selected pictures can be sent to the destination folder in the required format withoug opening the editor at that stage either using 'process multiple files' or 'export'.

  • Elements 6, Canon 50D Raw Files, Windows Vista

    Hi all...my first post here...
I'm able to load and see my Raw files in the organizer after loading the latest ACR. But when I browse through the files, after a bit,  I get an error message that Elements needs to close. After closing I check my task manager and notice that the organizer is at 25% CPU usage, so something is hanging things up. I just don't know enough to figure it out. (I'm a little tech savvy, but not a lot...)
I'm on a PC running Vista. Any thoughts would be very appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

"Bug Files"? That's a new one for me.
I've successfully imported a Thousand RAW files with thumbnails generated in the organizer.
    I've got 4gigs of RAM.
I left the organizer open for 6 hours today and when I got back home, the RAW files still wanted to freeze, yet I was able to go to some jpg files and work on them before getting the "Elements is not responding and needs to close message". I'm going to go back to check on browsing the RAW files again.
I heard from someone on a DPReview Canon Forum who had the same problem with Elements 6 and the 50D Raw files and it disappeared when he upgraded to Elements 7.

  • Raw files showing only as icons in bridge

This is a recent problem for me.  The raw files in question are ".pef" files from a Pentax k100d that I've had for quite some time.
I started having a problem with Bridge crashing on me.  In trying to solve that problem, I started Bridge by holding down the crtl key and choosing the three option to reset preferences and purge cache.  Since doing this, all my thumbnails have disappeared and I can't get them back.  I've read and found the appropriate locations for the camera raw plugins:
I am running 64 bit Vista. I have CS4 and found that the latest version of Camera Raw that I could install was version 5.7.  I found the install instructions on the Adobe site.  As it told me to do, I downloaded the zip file for version 5.7 and extracted.  I moved the Camera Raw.8bi file from the top directory into C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS4\File Formats and moved the Camera Raw.8bi file from the Win64 folder into C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS4\File Formats.
I also found the 5.7 Camera Raw installer and ran that.  I am still having the same problem.
I have spent the better part of two days googling and trying to figure out what I am doing wrong.
I've tried moving all my cache files and letting them regenerate.  I've purged the cache several times.  Nothing I do works.
I do notice that when I go to a directory of photos that I have not been to in a while, I see the thumbnail for a brief moment.  It quickly disappears and the flower icon appears.
Do I need to re-install Bridge?  Do I have to uninstall first?  I can't do that separate from Photoshop can I?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried all of those options: Prefer Embedded, High Quality on Demand, Always High Quality with every combination of Generate 100% previews.  Still nothing
I searched for all the instances of the camera raw file and it found 4 versions of the file 2 associated with CS4 and 2 associated with Photoshop Elements that I used a couple of years ago.

  • "Bad" colors/banding when going into Edit mode with Canon RAW files

Just got my iLife '06 suite yesterday and ran into something very disturbing: something wrongwith the colors of RAW files once you go into editing mode. In the library view, they're fine. Try to edit one, and after a few seconds, there's a final refresh of the image window that heavily alters and bands the colors. (Looks almost like a poor conversion down to 256 colors or less - it's that bad).
This is happening on Canon 300D and 20D raw files, and did NOT happen with iPhoto 5. The RAW files open up and display just fine in Preview (as well as 3rd party apps) - problem is in iPhoto 6 only. I've already sent in a bug report - has anyone else tried double-clicking on a RAW file to go into Edit mode yet?
    David Miller

I use Huey from Pantone to calibrate my monitor for consistancy in different lighting situations and across applications. But the same effect happens by choosing any one of the non-standard monitor calibrations.
    Try this:
Choose a RAW photo and monitor calibratioin that causes the banding and discoloration.
Open the RAW photo in Edit mode and wait the couple of seconds for banding to appear.
Next, adjust the image size slider so that scroll bars appear at the bottom and right side of the photo. It doesn't take much. Notice the banding disappears!
Now grab one of the scroll bars and move it. Observe the banding and discoloration. And, when you release the scroll bar the banding disappears again.
I don't remember this happening with iPhoto 5.
I think it has something to do with the display
calibration. After I first saw this I switched back
to my default iMac G4 profile, and the problem wasn't
there anymore. I'm not sure what the difference is. I
set up several different profiles, each with
different choices for Advanced, White Point and
Gamma, and some trigger this banding, and some do
    not.
    Anybody have any similar experiences?

  • Corruption of RAW files / rendering preview

I have recently imported many RAW files that I took at an event. The problem is that whilst many of the photos look great, approx a third initially look good but then a 'rendering preview' message comes up - once the message has disappeared the photo's change and end up looking awful!!!
Without meaning to sound ungrateful, before anyone gives the standard role-out answer, I am very aware that RAW files do not contain camera settings etc etc and that the image that comes up instantly is a jpeg until it has finished rendering etc etc. The point being that all photos were taken on the same camera, in the same situation, on the same card and dowloaded at the same time.
Why are only some of the shots coming up with the 'rendering preview' message? The majority render instantly and look great!!
Why do they look so bad. The best way I can describe the way they look is:
    very little dynamic range
    high contrast
    too much gamma
    blown highlights
    very poor quality
    cold
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Guy,
Having the same problem and discussion here:
    http://www.dppro.co.uk/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=14&thread_id=144&pid=841#post_841
I've checked my "edit/Preferences" and on the Pre-sets Tab my auto tone box is not checked. I don't think it's that but it's at least a helpful suggestion.
You ask" Why are only some of the shots coming up with the 'rendering preview' message? The majority render instantly and look great!! "
it will be the amount of cache/virtual memory you have set aside for Lightroom. The previews will be generated up to the cache limit and then only on demand. Click on one of the unaffected previews and I'll wager that goes south too :o(
I think it's a bug. Your comment about expecting people to say RAW files don't have camera settings. I think that's off the mark. My understanding was that RAW files didn't compress any in camera tweaks irreversibly. It makes no sense for new DSLR's to have all these fancy features if the optimum file format chooses to ignore them. Why bother to put them on Pro spec cameras if they can only be used on Jpeg files? i could be wrong but I'm there's just no point in having all the settings in camera if any serious enthusiast/Pro looking to get the best from their investment has to put hours in on the PC because the premium file option ignores their in camera effort. I though RAW was about options and being able to change your mind. Like I say i could be wrong but I think it's a bug.
I had to upgrade to v 1.3 so I could get the software to read my D300's RAW files. I'm sure an earlier version of lightroom used to pull this stunt too but I'm sure my Fuji S3 files were not...abused... in this way by v1.2.
I'll watch this thread with interest. I hope it works out favourably.
    Regards David

Is there a solution or shall I throw away Aperture and move to Adobe?
Thanks in advance for your attention.

Raw support is camera specific - it needs to take into account the sensor characteristic, and if possible, the lens.

The sensors do differ, the lenses are treated differently, the X-E2 can record 14bit raw. It definitely needs a different raw support.
