Raw file opens as jpg
Can somebody help me. I am running CS3 on MacOS X. with Camera Raw 4.1 plugin.
When I open RAW file it is opened on in RAW editor but in Photoshop as a Jpg file with different name.
example:
initial file:L1010860.RAW
when it is opened in photoshop the name changes to: L1010860_2.jpg
>Photoshop cannot open RAW files; only Camera Raw can.
While Photoshop can not open a raw file without a helper application, the statement that only Camera Raw can open raw files is not true. A common problem encountered by Nikon users is that the Nikon NEF plugin overrides ACR and the raw file is opened in it rather than ACR. The Bibble plug in can also open raw files in Photoshop. Alexinna's problem appears to be related to iPhoto and may be analogous to the problem with the Nikon NEF plugin.

Why can't i save an edited .raw file as a .jpg
I am using PSE 10 and with other catalogs i had no problem of editing my .raw files (6.7version) and then opening them and after further editing doing a "save as" and saving it as a .jpg file in a version set.
now I am working with another set of picture files and when i try to save the final edited it suggests:
ed-1.psd and the drop down menue also lists: psd, pdd, pse, .raw, png and TIFF.(there are no layers in the file)
search of FAQ was unsuccessful. I have avague recollection of having this similar problem years ago with other earlier versions of PSE but can't remember the solution. This is my first instance of this problem. Other info that may help is i believe this is a "converted catalog" from PSE 8. I am running on WIN 7 Prof, 64 bit
Appreciate any help
Dan Y
I went back to a previous different catalog>same computer, same PSE10 and selected a previous version set consisting of the original >raw file and the saved edited file ed-1.jpg and selected the original .raw file, opened full edit, it opens in ARW 6.7 as before, then opened the file in the PSE10 editor and tried to save as a .jpg ( which i obviously did in the last few days at most)(no changes made to computer or programs) and it WOULD NOT OPEN AS A .jpg AS DESCRIBED ABOVE.
HOPE THIS HELPSYou are possibly working with a 16 bit image. Before clicking the Open Image button in the camera raw dialog change the drop down to 8 bit and you should then be able to save as jpeg.

RAW file converting to jpg?
How to I convert a RAW file to a JPG format without opening the RAW file in ACR?
Richard CooperColin, I started shooting RAW very near the beginning of my digital experience, way back in 2002 (!). Back then, I simply ran them through the Canon converter with no adjustments; ACR wasn't an option in Elements at the time. However, I did save all those RAW originals, and, on occasion, I've gone back to some of them, adjusted them with ACR and Elements, and wound up with a better edited photo.
On the other hand, the ones I took in JPEG before discovering RAW....they are what they are, permanently blown highlights and all.
Disk space, DVD's and even CF cards (1 GB are now $50 in some US stores) are so attractively priced now that I don't even think twice about whether or not to shoot in RAW. The camera is set on that 24/7.
Just one person's approach...

Can Olympus RAW files open in Lightroom mobile?
Can Olympus RAW files open in Lightroom mobile?
As I understand it, but I have not tried LR Mobile, you have to have the raw files on a real computer and then sync the smart previews from LR desktop to the iPad. I am still trying to get my head around a real use case for a non professional enthuasist photographer.

Canon 7d mark II raw files open error
Photoshop elements 12 will not open the canon 7d mark II raw files, from what I read elements are not going to upgrade there camera profiles anymore, so anything new your just out of luck? The support people have no clue.
Faq:
FAQ: Will Photoshop Elements work with my camera, or Why won't my raw files open?
more specifically:
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
in which you find that your camera requires the ACR 8.7 version
Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
in which you see that PSE12 can't, and that PS13 can with an update.
So what solution, since Adobe does not upgrade older versions? It's the free Adobe DNGconverter:
Use the latest version of the free DNG Converter (for Macintosh or Windows)
You can convert your files to the universaly compatible DNG format (the files will work with any version of the Camera Raw plug-in). See In depth : Digital Negative (DNG) for more information.
This standalone utility lets you batch convert whole folders of raw files to the DNG raw format that your PSE12 can read.

Files on my computer. I upgraded the DNG file. I am using Photoshop 6. This camera takes pretty good pictures in JPG. but I would love to have the RWL files open.
Does anyone have any idea of what works?Realised pretty soon some thing was not right with images but continued work flow with out problems with any other import
Exactly what was not right?
Most likely a hardware problem causing corruption in the transfer of files from SD card to your computer. It could be the SD card itself, card reader, hard disk or memory.
Side issue:
Open Lightroom 4 on macbook air import to HD
Drag and drop in Lightroom on to external HD
why don't you save yourself a step and import directly to the external HD (and thus also produce one less place where file corruption can happen)? -
Imported raw files open in PS as JPEG
I want my raw files to remain raw files when I import them into Photoshop. My raw files automatically open up into JPEG files. How do I stop this from happening.
Thank youI’m not very experienced with Adobe Camera RAW (and by the way there’s a Forum for that specifically), but what you describe sounds implausible to me.
If one opens a RAW file with ACR one produces a psd file which one certainly can save as a jpg, but it is not »opened« as a jpg.
Anyway one can set ACR to open images as Smart Objects, thus maintaining them as RAW-data in a psd file.
But maybe I’m misunderstanding you. -
When I pick a raw file from iPhoto to open in Bridge, it opens as a JPG. Why? I want to adjust the raw image (thus keeping the original...original. I'm using Mac OSX, with 2 gig ram on a new iMac.
Gene, you mean I can't just WILL my machine to do my bidding? Darn! But, you and Ann , you are right. Just setting iPhoto's preferences to "use RAW etc. was the simple solution
to a dumb question. Here's probably another.
Bridge shows two raw files: the CSR2 file made my Canon 40D, and the file I converted with DNG converter. I stack them, and the CSR2 file is the default "top" picture. When i click to open it, it's opened as a CSR2 file, and it seems I can adjust it using Bridge tools. Is there then no difference between the CSR and DNG file, since I can open/adjust both?
Or, if there's a reason I should be working on the DNG file, is there a way to move that file to the top of the stack? -
I am using a Nikon D5100 and shoting in raw. When I upload the photos to iPhoto they are raw files. When I open them in Photoshop CS6 they are jpgs. I tried uploading the photos to Bridge CS6 and they imported as jpgs. Any idea how to open the files so they remain raw and not jpg?
Images that have been opened in Photoshop are not "raw files" or "jpgs", they are documents.
Can you please be a little more specific about what you mean by "When I open them in Photoshop CS6 they are jpgs"?

Greetings -- This is my second post. If you know you are going to work with your photos in Photoshop, should you be taking pictures in RAW format or in JPG? I have read that every time you save a JPG in JPG format, that you further compress the picture and chip away at its quality. Whereas this does not occer with a RAW file as long as youy keep it as a RAW file.
ZUFor what it's worth, every serious photographer that I know of (and I know of a lot of them) shoot in RAW format. I do too. As I understand it, the reason is that in RAW your camera's built in processing essentially leaves the digital image you shot alone. Consequently, the image's digital information is, for the most part, untouched, which means that when you download the image to your editing software (such as Photoshop Elements), you have an image with all the information on it that you originally shot. And this means that any additional processing you do, begins with a "pure" image. In effect, a RAW image carries all the information your camera captured when you shot the photo; JPG does not because the camera did some processing and compressing as you took the shot.
I suggest that you experiment. Shoot the same subject using the same settings on your camera, except shoot one in JPG and the other in RAW. Then download them to PSE (or whatever) and see what you think. One caution: the JPG image may look better initially than the RAW image, because of the camera's processing into JPG. So, use PSE to futher manipulate the original images and see if it makes any difference to you personally.
By the way, I also understand that working on a JPG file over and over can deteriorate the image. That is, if you open a JPG, work on it with PSE, save it, and then open it again to work on it, save it again, and so on, the JPG file will begin to show bad things. This doesn't mean that you can't open a JPG file over and over; instead, it means that if you open it and process it further, deterioration will occur.
I'll bet someone else can clarify and expand on JPG vs. RAW better than I can. -
RAW files open directly into Photoshop
Odd issue here: when launching RAW files they open directly into Photoshop. Either Camera Raw gets bypassed or it just processes them on the fly.
This happens after a bit of usage, re-launching Photoshop solves the problem for the next few files.
This happens if I launch the RAW files from the Finder, Bridge or Photomechanic. Only the right-click on my mouse in Bridge will show the option of opening images in Camera Raw.
This is driving us nuts here. Happens on 4 work stations.
RAW files are mostly CR2's. Mac OS 10.4.10Are you using PhotoKit or PhotoKit Sharpener? If so, this is a known issue with the previous builds...go to the CS3 Beta page and redownload the current builds.

If you AREN'T usinf PhotoKit or Sharpener, try resetting your Bridge preferences and purging the cache. -
FAQ: Will Photoshop Elements work with my camera, or Why won't my raw files open?
What is a raw file?
A raw file is the unprocessed light data that was captured by your camera sensor. The only settings on your camera that apply to this file are aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. This means that any settings you may have applied to the file, such as white balance, or black and white effects, have no effect. Because this sensor data is raw, it must be processed or baked into an actual image file, that's where the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) plug-in comes in.
What is Adobe Camera Raw?
ACR interprets the raw data and makes image information out of it. But every camera has a unique sensor and thus has a unique form of raw file. Even though camera manufactures may use the same file extension each time (e.g. Nikon raw files are always .NEF), each camera model has a different way of storing information. Because of this, we must continually update ACR for new cameras. As we add new cameras to the list (over 300 now) we update our published list of supported cameras. Additionally, with the changes to ACR, newer releases will not always be compatible with older versions of Photoshop Elements.
So, will the my raw files work with Photoshop Elements?
So if you are wondering if your camera is supported by ACR or will work in Photoshop Elements, first check this list:
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
Once you know whether your camera is supported by ACR and by which version, check this list to see whether your version of Photoshop Elements supports that version of ACR or later:
Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
If your version of Photoshop Elements should open raw files from your camera, make sure you have the latest version of ACR installed. Go to Help > Updates to install the latest ACR release.
You can also manually download and install ACR updates:
Macintosh
Windows
What if my camera is not compatible with my version of Photoshop Elements?
Supposing you have a camera that came out after the release of a newer version of Photoshop Elements, so that your version of Elements is no longer recieving updates, you have two basic options:
Purchase the latest version of Photoshop Elements that supports your camera.
Use the latest version of the free DNG Converter (for Macintosh or Windows)
You can convert your files to the universaly compatible DNG format (the files will work with any version of the Camera Raw plug-in). See In depth : Digital Negative (DNG) for more information.
Where are all of the tools and options that I've seen available in tutorial books and videos?
Photoshop Elements has fewer tools and options than it's parent Photoshop. These differences are documented here:
Adobe Camera Raw differences between Photoshop and Photoshop Elements

RAW files converted to JPGs - why?
Pics shot in RAW format in my Minolta A2 camera appear correctly as MRW files of 11.6mb each when imported into iPhoto. However, when I look for them in the iPhoto Library (in their correct catalogue position under year/month/date) they are displayed as JPG files. This used not to happen, and other iPhoto users say their files are corrctly tagged as RAW. Conversion to JPG of course means loss of quality with compression, negating the whole purpose of shooting in RAW. I should be able to import photos from the iPhoto Library into Photoshop as RAW files for processing there before export and any compression. Something seems to have changed, but I can't figure out what. Any suggestions?
First off, editing a RAW image results in the modified photo being saved in JPG format. The original RAW image is still there however. If you want something lossless, check your iPhoto preferences. There is a setting that causes edited RAW images to be converted to TIFF, or you can have it send RAW files to an external editor. Note that RAW is just an electronic negative format. In order to do anything with it anyway, there is a rasterization phase that converts it to JPEG or TIFF or some other format for editing and printing.
Bring up iPhoto help, and search for keywords "edit RAW". There is an item "Working with photos taken in RAW format" that will give you more information.
If you find this helpful or if it solves your problem, please indicate this by clicking the appropriate icon in the header of this reply.
