Raw file previews of .rw2 files (in Finder, etc.) on Macintosh?

I know that this is not necessarily a Photoshop question, but it is the kind of issue that Photoshop users might be able to help me with.
I have two computers and two cameras. The computers are both Macs, the cameras are a Canon and Panasonic. For reasons that I don't understand, I can see image previews of the Canon raw files (.CR2) files in the Finder and other programs, but I can see previews of the Panasonic files (.RW2) files on only one computer. Both computers have Creative Suite Design Standard CS4 installed. I just updated Camera Raw by hand to v 5.7, but this didn't help.
I have talked to Apple Tech Support, they said that this was a user application issue--some application installs something that allows the Finder and other apps to display a preview of the image.
Browsing Apple's support forums, there is an indication that if I were to install iLife or Aperture, that might solve my problem (because there is a raw file updater for Mac that supports .RW2 files). But I don't have either program currently installed on either computer, and one can display previews.
Any thoughts on this? Anyone else able to see or not see previews of raw files.
TIA
PS--converting the .rw2 files to .dng does not help.

hello.  did you ever find a solution to this problem?  i still have this same problem with .rw2 riles not previewing in finder on one of my macs.
thanks. .j

  • Is there a way to save Aperture RAW edits (previews) as .tif files?

In iPhoto Preferences/Advanced, it is possible to choose to save RAW edits as .tif files. The resulting files are then stored in the Previews folder inside the iPhoto Library. In Aperture, edits of RAW files are stored in the Previews folder as .jpg files. I am aware that I can export the edited versions as .tif files outside of the Aperture Library. Is there a way to do it inside the Aperture Library, just the way iPhoto does??

Probably collecting everything on an artboard into a new layer might give you the option to use a script to save layers to files.
But this is a feature request but no as of yet has suggested a way that this might work, at least I do not think so.

  • How to enable TIF file preview?

    Hi
I want to see Tif files preview like Jpeg files in my doc.
    How I can do that?
    Thanks

    Hi Entezari,
Thanks for posting your query, If you use a picture library or asset library instead of a document library for your tiff's SharePoint will automatically generate a preview image for your tiff. Then you will be able to click on the enlarged versions of the tiff
directly in the browser. You can also upload the dwg files in a picture library or asset library.

  • CS5 File Preview Images

IDCS5 (Snowleopard 10.6.3) doesn't seem to be creating file previews when saving files even though the Preferences option to 'Save Preview Images with Documents' is ticked and also ticked when saving the ID file. Not sure if this is to do with Quicklook but, has anyone else noticed this?

Mine does but then again I am using https://www.code-line.com/software/sneakpeekpro/ alongside the normal Quickview. I think I just answered my own question!

  • Preview and Finder can't see my .RW2 files

I recently got a new camera (Panasonic GX7) which shoots the same raw file format .RW2 as my older Panasonic GF1 camera. My workflow is to convert the .RW2 files to .dng at import via Lightroom, and to save the .RW2 files as backup on a separate drive.
Just noticed that if I try to view any files from the new camera in Preview, I get a message "The file "_000xxx.RW2" could not be opened. Preview currently does not support this raw file format". Also looking at the files in Finder with Column View, no preview is available, just an icon. Same goes for the .RW2 files and the converted .dng files.
On my wife's Mac Mini running 10.9.4, all these files display as I would expect.
Question is, will Preview ever support this raw file format (from this camera - same file format displays just fine from older camera!) under OS X Lion? Or is the truth that "While you're running a Lion machine Preview ain't never gonna support this new-fangled camera's raw files"?
    Can anyone advise?
    Thanks in advance
    Jim

Thanks QuickTimeKirk - as I feared!
My MacPro won't go beyond Lion, so I'll have to live with this for a while, I guess

  • Support for Panasonic GH4 RAW (RW2) Files?

Any word on support for Panasonic GH4 RAW (RW2) files? They load into Aperture (and Photoshop, too) with the dreaded "unsupported image type" alert.

The GH4 comes with a software disc that includes SILKYPIX Developer Studio 4.1 SE for Mac & PC. Installing the software seems to also install the Panasonic Raw 2 Image Plugin. Once the software was installed, I was able to open the RW2 files shot with the GH4 in iPhoto, Lightroom 5 and Preview. After SILKYPIX Developer Studio 4.1 SE is installed, the RW2 preview images also appear in Finder.
I was not able to find the software on the Panasonic web site, so if you are installing on a new Mac without a CD/DVD drive, you'll need to use Remote Disc.

  • Olympus RAW Files Preview Problems

    Hi,
I have started using Lightroom as my photo editor and organiser and have taken on board the advice to convert RAW files to DNG. Unfortunately I have discovered that Finder (I operate an IMac, Mavericks 10.9.2) will not preview these DNG files. I use an Olympus EM1 and have been reliably informed that Apple does not support Olympus RAW files converted to DNG, but they do support Canon and Nikon. I would appreciate everyone's support in trying to get Apple to recognise Olympus and I would be grateful if you would take a few minutes of your time to copy the following few sentences and post them onto the Apple Feedback web page, which I have also provided. Thanks in anticipation.....
    "Hello,
I use an Olympus camera and convert the RAW (ORF) files to DNG in Lightroom. Unfortunately Finder preview does not preview these files, although I believe that Canon and Nikon camera files are previewed. Would it possible for Apple to enable previews in Finder of Olympus RAW files converted to DNG?
    Thanks."

In PSE 11, have you checked whether you have the latest plugin for your camera?  If not then it is not a bad idea to do it now by going to:
    Help >> Updates
You may also want to check if the files are saved in your default location normally "MyPictures" in XP or in Libraries >> Pictures in Windows 7 machine.  See this picture:
Hope this helps if not please post back explaining clearly what do you see on the screen.
    Good luck.

  • Finder Window Flashes When Showing Preview Of Multimedia Files.

When Show Icon Preview is selected the finder window flashes(i.e, its gets highlighted and deactivated in a flashing manner) especially when previewing files of movies and pictures(PDF previewing is fine). The problem is there even in cover flow mode while loading the preview, and once the preview(thumnails) of files are done the finder behaves normal. When i checked the problem in another account it's working fine with out any problem in show icon preview mode, clover flow mode.I think the problem is a corrupted preference file.I tried deleting com.apple.finder.plist but its of no use...

    You are using Perian?
--> Delete ~/Library/Preferences/org.perian.Perian.plist and re-login! May update the Perian tool and the flashing is gone.

  • How to change file preview in Finder?

So I just finished my latest short film, and I exported it to Finder. However I don't like the preview Finder chose for my video, it simply chose a random frame from my video and made that the preview of the file. I have a custom poster I made for the video I would like to make the preview of the file. I've look at other websites and they all mistook "preview" for icons. I am not talking about the icon of the file, I am talking about the actual preview of the file. If you open the Info pane of an image or a video file, there will be a tab under "Open With" named "Preview" and shows the preview thumbnail for the file. Can anyone tell me how I can manually change the preview of a file? I thought about importing the video into iTunes, change the cover art and take it out again, however because the file is encoded with Apple ProRes 4444 iTunes won't accept it and even if it did it would have been converted to other format, which is something I am trying to avoid and I would like to keep it ProRes 4444.

    Hi!
I'm not sure how to change the preveiw icon, but if you're just looking for a quick way to change the icon preview of that particular file you could always change the the icon from the finder get info window:

Hope this gives you a temporary solution until you find what you're looking for.

  • File preview in Finder not available, only thumbnails. How to fix?

When selecting a file and clicking the space bar, I used to be able to get a preview of the file on the screen that allowed me to scroll through the file (I guess this uses a rendering engine of the application that supports the file format, e.g. MS Powerpoint or Word, so this is not an issue related to the Preview app). This is not available any more. When selecting a file in Finder in Mavericks and then hitting the space bar I only get a thumbnail of the file displayed, usually the first page of the file if it is a document. The preview facility as it was before is extremely useful.

I never knew of this feature with the space bar before. But I just tried it and it does open the selected document in a little preview window. Is this what you want to see?
When I pressed the space bar on this file, this window opened and I was able to scroll through the 3 or 4 pages worth. As you can see I have the option to open it in MS Word if I want to.
This is the same window that opens up when you click on "Quick Look". I don't recall if "Quick Look" is in the menu bar of the Finder Window by default. But if it's not, just right click on the menu bar of the Finder Window and add it to where ever you want it.
Also, see where it says View and gives me 4 options? I use the 3rd option as it gives me a smaller preview of the selected file.
    Hope this helps.

  • No thumbnails in finder/preview after exporting files as dng out of lightroom?

Does anyone have experience sorting out the issue of no thumbnails in finder/preview after exporting files as dng out of lightroom?
There are several conversations in the forum about this problem, but cant seem to find a solution.
Anyone know how to sort this out?

    Thanks for your reply.
Mac does support previewing dngs in finder and preview. This has not been a problem before (besides when using my fujufilm compact camera, which mac now has updated the Apple camera for).
To answer your Q about dng files. Thats exactly what i do. I have work which involves communicating/transfering multiple lr -edited files to someone else whom further edits in ps. Not only that, I personally use dng as a way of storing my files. I suppose like to keep my files tidy and uniform.
Any mac users out there who has a a solution to my issue with previewing dngs?

I have just bought a Panasonic Lumix compact camera. Aperture and Preview can't open the RAW files from this camera. Panasonic recommend downloading 'SYLKPIX Developer Studio SE' to save RAW file formats. How can Aperture and Preview read the files?

Either use 'SYLKPIX Developer Studio SE' to develope the RAW files and to save them in another lossless format like TIFF, or try if Adobe's free DNG Coverter can convert your Lumix RAW files to dng. Then import the dngs. This way, your files will still be RAW files.  This works (most times) for my Lumix FZ28.

  • Trying to export RAW originals from Aperature 3 to LightRoom 4: I choose File Export Originals. I think then Pictures LR. But then I can't find files in LR library.Files seem stuck in Pictures as NEF

Trying to export RAW originals from Aperature 3 to LightRoom 4: I choose File>Export>Originals. Then Pictures>LR. But then I can't find files in LR library.Files seem stuck in Pictures as NEF and or DNG files. I know Im stuck on something dumb but I am stuck. Help?

You now need to import those files into Lightroom.
BTW, Lightroom uses a "referenced" system so your images will always be in the folders you download/copy them to. Lightroom is a database first and foremost, albeit with non-destructive editing capabilities (effectively Adobe Camera Raw).

  • Does previewing mpeg-2 files cause the Finder to hang in Leopard?

In Tiger, previewing an mpeg-2 file in column view in the Finder causes a spinning beach ball for ages. Has this been fixed in Leopard?

This is probably your Norton software doing its best to ruin your mac.
I would start by trying to uninstall the Norton/symantec stuff. Then take any of the norton installer discs you have and burn them. I would also bury the ashes.
Maybe a safe boot would work to try to start up so you can uninstall the norton.
Barring that you may just have to start from scratch and reinstall everything (except the norton stuff).
Then never never never buy anything from symantec again.
    Hope this helps.
