RAW files as thumbnails in Windows Explorer

I've noticed something curious with my new PSE7. When I connect my camera (Canon 40D) to my computer I can see my CR2 files as a thumbnail, but when I copy them to my computer I cannot.
Is there anyway to allow me to see the CR2 files as thumbnails so I don't have to keep shooting with RAW + small JPG?

If you are on Windows XP you can download and install the ArcSoft RAW
Thumbnail Viewer: http://www.arcsoft.com/products/rawviewer/. It does not
seem to work on Vista (64bit). Otherwise get one of the free graphics
viewers, such as IrfanView or FastStone.

Cannot delete exe files - The action can't be completed because the file is open in Windows Explorer

We have received 3 new computers with Windows 8.1. All of us 3 have the same problem: we cannot delete exe files with message "The action can't be completed because the file is open in Windows Explorer"
For example, I download skypeinstall.exe on desktop, install the program correctly and then try to delete the file: file is in use by Windows Explorer, cannot be delete.
We reboot computer, we are able to delete the file. But, if I restore the file from the recycle bin on the desktop, I cannot delete it again until I reboot the PC. I used ProcessExplorer to see what is locking it and I can see 5 instances of explorer.exe
locking the file.
I can always reproduce the same way:
1-Reboot
2-Delete exe file
3-Restore file
4-Delete stop working and 5 explorer.exe handle are locking it.
I have tried the following so far after reading multiple threads:
- De-activating Windows Search service
- Activating User Experience service
- Deleting from command prompt (no success)
- In folder options: inactivate display icon on thumbnail and activate always display icons, never thumbnail
- Changing folder view (contents, detail, small icons...)
- Using Lock Hunter - not working until reboot
None of these worked.
We all have Windows 8.1 with Crucial SSD drive, could the problem be linked with the SSD drive incompatibility?
Any help would be appreciated.

Please try to make a clean boot for your system, then check if this problem resolved.

If problem persists, try to open Resource Monitor to check handle of Explorer.exe, if there any exception, end them for test.

Viewing thumbnails in Windows Explorer

I have just bought CS6 and when I save, the thumbnail shows the PS logo instead of the actual photo. How do I change this?

Not sure what you mean. There are no visible PSD thumbnails in Windows Explorer or whatever you are referring to. This hasn't been the case qor several versions now. It existed once, but then the compatibility issues became to great and ever since Adobe has not pursued the matter further. Use Bridge to browse your files.

Viewing thumbnail in Windows Explorer

On my desktop PC running Vista, in Windows Explorer I get a thumbnail showing the content of a pdf file. On my laptop running Windows 8.1, I only get an icon with the pdf logo. Is it possible to get the thumbnail view in 8.1? If so, how?

Cannot delete file - tried everything - file in use by Windows Explorer error

Hi - I have tried now for 2-3 hours trying to delete an .mkv file from my "Downloads" folder
It says the file is in use by Windows Explorer and cannot be deleted
I have tried deleting it using Del command prompt as me and as Administrator (I am the Admnistrator, there are no other users) - no luck
I have tried Safe Boot and then deleting - no luck
I have tried rebooting many times and then deleting - no luck
Any ideas? It's driving me nuts

hi to all who have this bug- "file in use by Windows Explorer error"
this is the only way that it works:
1.type cmd in search box
2.go to the drive and the directory the file is in ,for example:
after you type cmd you have a black screen with c:\user\
type in the drive the file is in and hit enter example - d: than hit enter
than you should see d:\>
now click the directory the problem file is in ,for example i will call the directory "movies" type in this- cd movies
now you will see this d:\movies>
to delete the file type this: del filename.mkv (dont forget the .mkv or any other file extension) don't hit enter yet, first open task manager (cntrl+shift+esc) go to process tab than right click on explorer.exe choose and click on end process
now your desktop should disappear. get back to the "cmd" window and hit enter.
now the file is deleted. now go back to the task manager and click on "file" on the upper left corner then on new task then type in "explorer.exe"
and you are done
please note that the file name you choose to delete cant be with spaces between the letters .if so you will need to change it in the same way in the cmd window only the comand will be instead of "del filename.mkv"(for example) after you are in the
right drive and directory:
rename "test space.mkv" testspace.mkv

this is the only way it workes
Instead of running a CMD prompt and typing everything, just start up Winrar or Winzip, kill Explorer, then delete problem MKV files to your hearts content within Winrar or Winzip.
Winrar and Winzip will navigate your folders as well.
After you are done, create a new Explorer task.
or..... if you need to rename MKV files, just rename them within Winrar/Winzip with Explorer not running.
I change the MKV extension to AVI (in Winrar with Explorer killed) in order to avoid Explorer issues, if I ever want to move the files in the future without needing to kill Explorer all the time to do so .
Using WinRAR works for me. Using the cmd function becomes complicated when I cannot rename my file with the rename command".

RAW Thumbnails in Windows Explorer?

I had this problem when I first got my Nikon D40x in June, I couldn't see thumbnails in my Windows Explorer. Then one day during the summer, on its own it seems, I was able to see thumbs, and its been that way until recently when I had to reinstall XP. Now i can't see them anymore.
What do I need to do to be able to see thumbnails of my RAW images again in Windows Explorer?
I'm using Photoshop CS3. And I've installed the newest Camera RAW plug-in.

That would be available from Microsoft. I believe they call it a codec (for whatever reason), and if you search MS for "raw code" a lot of info comes up .. including:

PDF Thumbnails in Windows explorer...

I have noticed that when you choose thumbnail view in XP or Vista, it only shows a adbove icon instead of an actual pdf thumbnail of th actual document. When reviewing hundreds of PDF's in windows explorer, this is a necessity. Why was this a standard installed option on Adobe 7 and then lost in version 8 and 9. This has to be a program glitch. This is becoming more and more of an important issue in my office as time goes on.
Please note that I AM NOT referring to seeing thumbnail views from within acrobat. This is a simple option that I know how to enable. I need to see them from a ile explorer window.

Thumbnails in Windows Explorer

Some pdfs that I download show in Windows Explorer with a thumbnail on the icon itself. Mine show in the Preview pane, but not on the icon. How can I make pdfs that show a thumbnail on the icon in Explorer? I'm using Acrobat 9 Pro on Windows 7.

Different Thumbnail Bridge - Windows Explorer - Purge Did Not Fix

I have posted this here because there seem to be similar discussions in this forum. The file is an .icon. The file is in a folder full of other icon files.
Bridge displays it correctly. Windows Explorer (Win 7) does not. I purged the cache for this icon file and also for all the other icon files in the folder. That did not fix it. I also tried using the Windows icon purge in Disk Cleanup. Then I rebooted Windows.That didn't work either.

You did not say what kind of a file. If it is a psd file Windows will not didplay thumbnail.

Can't open INDD files from Bridge or Windows Explorer

I upgraded from CS2 to CS4 in Jan 2009, but didn't uninstall CS2 until yesterday because the program file sizes seemed weird: CS4 was listed as less than 6Mb in the Add/Remove Programs list, while CS2 was shown to be many times that size (gigabytes?). I called support within the first month and was told it would be okay to uninstall CS2, but the tech could not explain the difference in program sizes, so I left it in place until yesterday. Now, neither Bridge nor Windows Explorer recognizes InDesign files. I can still launch the program from the Start menu and Desktop shortcut, and I can open files from within the program. But Bridge says the default for opening an INDD file is Acrobat...or Photoshop, Firefox or IE. Windows says the same. The INDD icon is no longer displayed in Windows Explorer either. It seems to have vanished from my system. I have tried to re-associate InDesign files with the program through Windows Explorer numerous times to no avail. Operating System: Windows XP Professional on a Dell GX270.
Is the only solution here to uninstall & reinstall InDesign? Any comments or suggestions are appreciated.

I'm having the same problem, with two exceptions:
1. A previous version of InDesign has never been installed on this PC before we got CS4.
2. It tries to open the files in Acrobat (7.0), and then this message pops up:
Acrobat could not open "....INDD" because it is either not a supported file type or because it has been damaged... To create a PDF document go to the ...
This is incredibly frustrating. The only way I can open files is to go through the InDesign "open file" command inside the program. I cannot open any Bridge files at all (same problem, opens in Acrobat).
I cannot chose the file type from the file association list as it does not show up on the list no matter how many times I search and choose it from my drive to associate.
... Is this a registry problem, maybe?

DLL file in Windows\system32 folder cannot be found by regsvr32 even though the file is visible in Windows Explorer

I am trying to register a DLL on a Windows 7 ultimate, 64-bit computer (all SPs installed).
The file resides in c:\windows\system32.
The DLL file is clearly visible in Windows Explorer. The file is not hidden. It is not marked Read-Only. All users can access it.
When I run regsvr32 it responds that the file cannot be found. It says to check the path.
The same thing happens when I run from the command prompt if c:\windows\system32.
When I try to open using Dependency Walker, it also cannot find the file.
Does anybody know what's happening here? I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone.

Hi,
You could run SFC command to see if you fix any corrupted system file.
If this cannot help, try to replace this file with a known good copy.

I can't find iTunes U/podcast files in iTunes OR Windows Explorer.

There are some podcasts (mostly iTunes U) on my 5th gen iPod that I cannot delete. They show up in my iPod's menus, but they do not show up in any section of iTunes. I have used Windows to show hidden files and deleted some of them off my iPod through Windows Explorer (I still couldn't find all of them, and I went through every file on my iPod), but even after I deleted the files in Windows they still show up on my iPod after I eject it!
Does anyone have any ideas, short of wiping it clean and starting over, how I can delete these podcasts? It's driving me crazy.

I forgot to add that even though the files show in my iPod after being deleted while connected to Windows, they are not playable in the iPod. If I click play the iPod starts freaking out and not responding properly (the scroll wheel gets all jerky).
I did multiple soft resets and that did not fix the issue. Thanks all!

Open files in Builder from Windows Explorer

Hi,
As I'm browsing files with Windows Explorer (on XP SP2) I
want to be able to double click on a file with a certain extension
(.xml, .java, etc.) have have it open up in Builder/eclipse. Using
the normal way of doing file associations ("Open With..."), I get a
"workspace in use" error (and the file still doesn't open). This
seems like it should be a slam dunk, I did this with JDeveloper all
the time - is it not possible with Eclipse? Thanks.

are you able to open a file from explorer when eclipse is not
running. ie - is it loading files whileu have eclipse already open
thats the problem?
if so, this is because eclipse is trying to run a second
eclipse. there is a way to tell applications that they can only
open once. if this is whats happening, i'll have a look at it, i
know i made a note about ths for something else last year, but just
cant remember right now.
i agree tho, it should be set to work in this way as
standard.

Can't transfer files via PC Suite: Windows Explore...

Has anyone else had this problem?
Nokia E61 (3.0633.09.04) via USB cable
Windows XP SP2 + latest patches/updates
PC Suite 3.82.22.0
I can connect and see the phone and install software via PC Suite, but I cannot transfer. It will start to transfer the file and then I get a Windows system error dialogue box asking if I want to send the error to Microsoft or not. :-(
This used to work on my phone. But then my computer crashed and I had to reinstall it. Now it's pretty much the same machine but PC Suite won't transfer files.
