RAW files dark green

After import, when I select a RAW file, it turns to a dark green hue. The following message occurs in the adjustments panel: "This photo was adjusted using an earlier version of Apple’s RAW processing." Clicking on "Reprocess" does nothing. The corresponding JPG and RAW thumbnail appear unaffected. I've trashed the plist and reinstalled Aperture, to no avail. Up until my last few imports, I've had no problems. Any ideas?
Aperture 3.2.4   Mac Pro 2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon   Mac OS 10.6.8    Camera: Canon EOS 7D

Now my thumbnails are also turning green.
Oh no!
In some similar cases  in AP 3.2.4 it helped to reregister the camera with the lauch services database, see this thread:
Getting very green tint on importing GF 1 RAW files.
But that always occured with the raw support in Lion after upgrading from SnowLeopard, but it is worth a try.

  • Why does Aperture make D7000 RAW files Dark????????

Okay, i've been through a million different ways - files look GREAT, then you load them into Aperture and they look like sh*t.
And i finally figured out a way to PROVE that Aperture is screwing up my files! Here's what I did:
Transfered original RAW files from my Nikon D7000 to a folder on a hard drive.
    1. Photo Mechanic: Loaded a RAW file into photo mechanic, it looked nice - exactly like it looked on my camera screen, did absolute nothing to it, exported it as a JPG. It came out looking NICE! Nice soft colors, lots of subtleties, beautiful. Could be a little sharper, but I wanted to make absolutely NO adjustments - since the test was for overall color and image quality.
    2. Aperture: Loaded the exact same original RAW file into Aperture and it looked like crap! DARK, muddy, all the subtletiy is lost. I did Nothing to adjust it, exported it as a high quality JPG - it came out DARK and muddy. Ugly!
***????? So annoying!!! This happens over and over and over again.
It's YOU Aperture! Not me!! Not my files! Not my camera - which i've brought back to get checked countless times to see if something was wrong with the camera.
It's really annoying. You have to fix it! There are countless comments online about this same problem. FIX IT!!!!!!!
If you email me i'll attach the two sample files. I did NOTHING to adjust either of them in either program. This is just the crappy dark garbage that Aperture generates from perfectly beautiful RAW files from Nikon D7000 cameras.
    - please respond.

What happens if, as an experiment, you use Adobe DNG Converter to convert one of the D7000's NEFs into a DNG? Same result?

  • Aperture imports Lumix GF2 RAW files with strong green colour cast

I'm using Aperture 3.3.1 with Digital Camera RAW 3.14.0 built 6460000.1 and iPhoto 9.3.1
When importing RAW files from my Panasonic Lumix GF2 into Aperture, the initial thumbnails are fine (it displays those embedded in the RAW file), but when Aperture has finished its processing, thumbails and full size images are dark and green - it seems only the green channel has been taken into account.
When importing the same photos in iPhotos, they look normal, with all their colours.
If I open the iPhoto library with Aperture, the photos are fine as well.
This is the first time I import photos since updating Aperture, iPhoto and Camera RAW a few days ago - I had the previous versions from before the updates issued around the last WWDC event.
I would have assumed iPhoto and Aperture use the same Camera RAW engine so I don't understand how Aperture is "broken" but not iPhoto.
Any ideas for the resolution of this issue are welcome.
    Thanks.

I applied the solution found on this this page:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3948457?start=0&tstart=0
Read the instructions carefully as there is a space to remove (introduce by the line break in the forum), then you need to reboot your Mac.
I solved my problem for new image imports. Regenerating the thumbails of already imported images didn't change anything. I gues this was because my issue was not just with the thumbails, but the whole image, without the Quick Preview feature activated.

  • HT3946 LX3 RAW files very dark after updating to Aperture 3.3.2

Since updating to version 3.3.2 my RAW files from my lumix LX3 appear very dark and with a green caste in both thumbnail and full views. My Nikon NEF files are fine. Anybody else had this problem?

Actually, looks like the sliders are greyed out on all settings, manual, Av, and Tv??  This just happened recently and I don't think there was an update.  I rebuilt the database already.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

  • Strange colour spots (red & green) appear after RAW files converted to JPEG, anyone know how to fix it?

Strange colour spots (red&green) appear after RAW files converted to JPEG, anyone know how to fix it? Thanks.

I use "Export" function to convert the picture from RAW format to JPEG format, resolution 240 pixels per inch. Strange red dots appeared in the area supposed to be dark grey, as per the picture below. The red colour does not appeared in the original RAW picture when viewing from Lightroom, only exist in the JPEG it created. Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks!

  • Panasonic GH2 RAW files go deep green with latest update

I updated my machine yesterday for the RAW updates. There is an issue here as far as I can tell with the Panasonic GH2 precessing. GH2 RAW files thumbnails look fine but Aperture, iPhoto and Preview all show a dark deep green image. Silkypix shows the correct image from the same file.
    Is anyone else seeing this?

Same issue here. Have posted to Aperture feedback and included a link to an example. I was shooting raw + jpeg until the camera became supported, so it's very blatant the raw processing isn't working. I tried using a range of camera settings to see if some of the intelligent DR features were tripping it up, but always the same result, even with all the advanced features all turned off.
What would be interesting is to hear if anyone is NOT experiencing this problem with GH2 raws.

  • Raw images are rendering dark green, and Raw FT not working

Upon loading Raw files from a Canon T5i into Aperture, the previews, when re-rendered by Aperture, turn a dark greenish hue. I've verified that the Digital Camera Raw software is up to date and my Camera is supported.
The second issue is that when I select "Raw Fine Tuning" from the "add adjustment" menu, nothing happens. The dialogue does not appear, and the RFT line does not get a bullet in the drop-down list.
I've recently installed Aperture 3.5.1 on a new machine, and haven't had this problem on the previous one.
Any help will be very much appreciated! Thanks.

As one test, please select one of these photos, in Adjustments click on Effects, then White Balance, and choose Auto.  What happens?

  • Why are my RAW files created by Vuescan so dark in Aperture?

I've been scanning images using Vuescan and saving as 16/48 bit RAW images. These images always look great in Vuescan but when I import these images into Aperture, the images are very dark. I need to do an exposure correction of +2 just to start seeing anything in the midtones. Ed Hamrick, the author of Vuescan, says this is because the RAW files have a gamma of 1.0 (coming straight of the CCD). If I save the same scan in TIFF format, the images look pretty much the same in Aperture and Vuescan.
My question is what benefits does saving in RAW bring given the large adjustments that I must make. I know I can automate the adjustments at import which might make this less of an issue but I wonder if saving in TIFF is nearly as good. Some of the pictures have a wide dynamic range with lots of shadow detail.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for any help.
    Bob

My frustration has been that I am doing the processing twice which is pointless. I need to choose a workflow. Mind you that if Apple supported the full DNG specification, it would be able to deal automatically with these RAW scanned DNG files (I believe they are linear DNGs) and automatically compensate during import just as Lightroom does. I am using the trial version of Aperture - which I feel really comfortable using - but I think I may take Lightroom for a spin prior to making a final choice of software.
As I tried to clarify, there is no benefit in saving as RAW from a scanner. Just save as a normal 16-bit TIFF and you'll and up with a simplified workflow and no loss of data nor detail. Actually, a DNG is internally just a TIFF.
If Apple fully-supported the DNG specification, then the RAW Fine Tuning adjustment would be available with its auto-exposure button to get a good starting point for tweaking the images.
You could provide Apple with feedback via, Aperture>Provide Aperture Feedback.
If I continue with Aperture, I am thinking that I will save these files as RAW TIFFs and do the gamma adjustment at import. This should streamline the workflow by making it possible to scan two 4x5s at one without the need to tweak each one in the scan and then do all my processing in Aperture (or Lightroom). I will just trust the scanner.
You shouldn't trust your scanner, just as you shouldn't always trust matrix metering or 'I'll fix that in post". Aiming for the best starting material is aiming for the best results. So instead, carefully examine each scan, which will not take you that long BTW.
I will still create the scanner profile of the IT8 target which I should then be able to use as a proofing profile to compensate for any color bias in the Fuji Provia film used. Perhaps I am wrong about this.
Actually, you're wrong on this. The IT8 provides an input profile, and not an output profile or working space. Imagine scanning a slide and printing it. Softproofing for IT8, then you can't softproof for your printer and vice versa.
Your post has allowed me to really think through my workflow and I really appreciate the input I've received in this thread. Now, I just wish I could get Apple to add support for Linear DNG (or whatever format Vuescan RAW DNG is which I know contains three colors per pixel rather then one as in Camera Raw) which would provide the additional tools to deal with these DNGs at import.
Although linear DNG support would indeed be nice for unsupported camera's, it is not necessary here. If Vuescan DNG has three channels, than it is a TIFF. (since demosiacing MUST have been applied, there are no scanners with a Foveon sensor as of yet)
Well to cut a very long story short just use TIFF for scans. It's a necessity for proper colormanagement and will simplify your workflow.

  • Sony a6000 raw files: Green shadows

Please look at this discussion: Re: Raw file: Sony Alpha/NEX E-mount Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review LR produces green shadows, Capture One and DXO do not. The explanation is a wrong value of the Black Levels in the Sony ARW (312 instead of 309). Can and will this issue be addressed in the next release?
    Thank you

That camera has been supported since version 5.4 of Lightroom. Are you sure you have Lightroom 5.6 installed? There is no plug-in for Lightroom to provide the camera support. Lightroom does not use the Camera Raw plug-in.

  • Lumix raw files are showing horrible green cast and not option

Hi, since upgrading Aperture to the current version, my new Pictures when shown the preview are ok, however when clicking on them they change to a horrible green. My files are RAW (.RW2) from a Panasonic Lumix GX1. Other thing, when checking in Adjustments, the RAW Fine Tuning Adjustment is greyed.
The ones from my Nikon D800 are good, that means, is not a general problem.

What is your MacOS X version? Your camera should be supported by MacOS X 10.7.4 or later, but your signature says 10.7.2?
If you have MacOS 10.7.4 or later,  but Aperture does not recognize your camera, try to register the raw support for your camera with the launch services db, see this post by Alan Roseman:
Re: Aperture 3 preview of raw file greenish
But also read the following post, that explain how this is supposed to work and to correct the typo in the command
In short: Quit Aperture, open the terminal, paste the  follwing text in (all in one single line) and hit return; then reboot the system.
    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -R /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library

  • Something is turning my photo files dark -- this started when my RAW problems began.

I have a MAC 10.8.5.  Back in February I was not able to open RAW files from my new Sony RX100-II camera.  I asked for help on this board, see https://forums.adobe.com/message/7200550#7200550.  I downloaded two programs, one from Adobe for DNG converter and one from Sony.  They both worked.  Since then my photos, sporatically, are getting a black veil covering them.  This started with DNG files.  I trashed the DNG converter and the Sony converter as my RAW files started opening in PhotoShop CS4 and CS6 (I don't know why they didn't open before).  Now the veil is about 10% black where before it was about 80% black.  I know I'm not presenting this clearly enough, but I am quite upset.  This is happening to files wheither I open them in PhotoShop or directly from my hard drive.  I open a folder and see many photo thumbnails.  One by one the thumbnails darken.  I can still see the image, but once the file is opened I cannot remove the black veil.  This started with my RAW files and now is happening to my jpg files.  It doesn't go in order, but moves around hitting one here and one there.  I have the majority of my files backed up on a drive not connected and I have a backup drive connected, so not terribly worried about losing my photos, but don't want to plug in a good external drive at this point.  I did a virus scan using Intego and no files were quarantined.  Not sure what to do at this point.  Would appreciate help.  Diane

Here is what the embedded previews look like as viewed in Windows Explorer which is not rendering the raw data, just showing the embedded preview from what ever software created the DNGs.
In Camera Raw, Lightroom and Bridge the DNGs look dark on my system the same as the JPGs included, above, so it's not errant Camera Raw defaults:
If I open one in RawDigger, raw analysis software the image is very dark similar to how it looks in Camera Raw so I think the data is just that dark:
If I open one in Photoshop and adjust the gamma to something around 2, then it looks brighter more like the DNGs embedded preview but lacks contrast:
So my suspicion is that the DNGs have linear gamma or perhaps the wrong DNG profile embedded in them.  This would be controlled by the scanner software and cannot be fixed in the raw converter, only Photoshop.
Another approach if your PS is new enough is to open the DNG into PS using the CR defaults, then set the mode to 32-bits and use HDR Toning, which assumes linear gamma and makes it look more natural.  I did also ASSIGN a profile of sRGB to the DNG before HDR toning:
And if you use PS-CC there is a Camera Raw layer filter that can be used for toning 32-bit images:
Since I've never used a Nikon Coolscan I can't really say what to do differently but I'd guess there is some setting or some scanning mode that can be change to make things look better.

  • RAW files are super dark in LR

I am new to shooting in RAW and have noticed when import my photos into LR (they are all perfect exposures) they are super dark. I had read somewhere that RAW files would look muddied and dark before processing them. I am not sure, how do you get the color and brightness back into the image? I have tried adjusting brightness/exposure/ etc. and it just is not true the the original perfect exposure of the image. Am I missing a step here? I have been searching online for an answer to no avail. Any help is so appreciated!

There are a couple of possiblities.
    1. You are applying a develop preset during import - check that the Develop Settings option in Import window (right side panel labelled Apply During Import) is set to None (see first screenshot below).
    2. You have inadvertently set Lr to automatically apply a non standard Default development setting - select one of the affected images then switch to Develop module. Choose Set Default Settings from Develop menu and hit button labelled Restore Adobe Default Settings (see second screenshot below)

  • Imported pentax RAW files goes dark

    Hi,
I bought Aperture earlier today and have had nothing but problems importing my images (RAW images that is, jpg files are fine). In the preview where you choose which images to import they look ok (as shot/as in photoshop) but after import they go dark before my eyes (really dark, mb two full stops darker). I tried searching for a solution and found similar problems but no solutions to my specific problem.
    Setup:
    MBP 4,1
    OSX 10.6.7
    Aperture 3.1.2
    Pentax k100d super
After I installed Aperture even finder shows the raw files incorrectly (i tried opening one of the files in a lightroom trial and thats seems to work). Thanks in advance, i really want to like this program...

    Hi,
I have the same camera, and exactly the same problem. Could you solve this issue ?
About images of Pentax cameras looking dark in Aperture, many people mention "if Highlight Correction is enabled, the image is shot at -1 EV exposure compensation, and then everything but the highlights is pushed up in the camera when it makes the JPEG version" -- and thus the solution seems to be to disable this highlight correction. But to me it seems that there is no highlight correction in the k100d super...
Aperture 3 actually clips the histogram (dark pixels turn completely black) with respect to the same PEF file read with the Pentax Photo Lab app or the Gimp. The "Raw Fine Tuning" adjustements do not solve this.

  • Getting very green tint on importing GF 1 RAW files.

    Using AP 3.2.3 on 10.7.4.
Getting very green tint on importing GF 1 RAW files. Also a message saying the files were processed usnig a previous Aperture RAW conversion. When I click on the reprocess button nothing happens for a few seconds then the WB corrects, but not every time. Sometimes I have to click on the WB picker for it to have an effect. This has only just started to happen as I've used the GF1 for 2-3 years with no problem. I see from other posts that the WB is a known issue but I alsohave the previous RAW message as well.
    Any thoughts?

    Two things to try:
Force the generation of new previews by holding down the option key while selecting "Update Preview"
If this only happened after you upgraded to 10.7.4 and worked well before, then register your camera with the lauch services database - see this post by Alan Roseman:This solved my questionRe: Aperture 3 preview of raw file greenish, but read the follow up posts (the lsregister command) as well, on how it is supposed to work and how to correct the typos.

  • Aperture D600 Raw Files too dark?

Is anyone else seeing that their Nikon D600 raw files stink in Aperture? I realize that Apple backwards engineers Raw support but if I look at a file from my D600 on Aperture and Capture NX2, the difference is 10-fold. I can see detail in the shadows in the NX2 conversion and nothing but black in the Aperture conversion. I have never seen this much of a disparity and I have used well over a dozen different DSLR's. I am curious if anyone else is seeing this? I mean in one image I can see a staircase in the NX2 conversion and nothing but black in Aperture?

"Neutral" on the camera means nothing.  Those control the JPEG previews only and do not affect RAW files.
Yes I know. However, that JPEG preview is what you see on the back of the camera so having all parameters set to as little post-processing as possible will help give you a more accurate preview of the Raw file. I will give you some more background... Our first DSLR was a Canon 10D. This was before Aperture v1.0. We moved to a 20D, a 30D, a 40D, switched to Nikon and used a D80, 90, 300, 300s, 7000, and 600. I have photographers whose files I process that included Fuji (yikes!), Canon 7D, 5D, & 5DMII. Haven't had a Sony camera yet. I started with Aperture v1 and am now using the latest Aperture release. I have a very good understanding of the process.
@ funkcanna, thanks. I haven't used a D4 but it is good to hear I am not going crazy! Yes, the files just go to crap when you click on one. I too hope this is not a sign of things to come... I really don't like Lightroom but for now, I have no choice.
