RAW files end up as TIFF. Why?

After taking 300-400 photos and processing them in Aperture 3, OnOne and CS6 (CC) I always end up with some TIFF files. I have no idea how, when or why they were created. Some unknown thing happens during processing that turns some of my RAW files into TIFF files. This TIFF issue is a new issue for me, but I have noticed when I download a bunch of photos to SAM'S the automated SAM'S CLUB download system rejects the TIFF files. How can I avoid this TIFF issue? Do you know of anyway I can batch up the TIFF files and convert them to JPEG in one quick process before sending off to SAM'S CLUB for printing.

I'm assuming you are using Aperture's "Edit with..." menu items. What happens in Aperture when you use an external editor like PS or OnOne, is that it creates a new version of the image to be edited as either a TIFF or PSD file and creates a new corresponding master file in that format. The TIFF/PSD is specified in the Export panel in Aperture's Preferences. (Even if you specify something stupid like Calendar for your external editor, you still have only those two choices for the format of the file to be edited.) The external edits are performed on the new TIFF or PSD version, and your original RAW is untouched. Your external edits show up in the new version when you return to Aperture.
For compatibility with Sam's and most other places that provide prints, you will have to export your edited version from Aperture as a JPEG and send out the exported file.

  • Nikon D800 can't open all RAW-files ending .NEF

Got a Nikon D800 and can't open all RAW-files ending .NEF Most of them no problem, but some I just can't.
"Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model" Thats not wight cause I can open like 90% of my .NEF files :/
Got latest Camera Raw (6.7)..Help please:/

Because many of the camera makers slightly alter their versions of their raw format whenever they release a new camera model.
Nikon does it, Canon does it, and also several other camera makers.
There is not a single version of NEF that all Nikon cameras use, nor a single version of CR2 for all Canon models.
Here is a list of supported cameras and the required ACR plugin needed to open the raw files.
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
Versions of ACR are specific to each version of Photoshop.
Older versions of PS cannot use the latest version of ACR.
You need to download the latest version of Adobe DNG Converter.
This will convert your newer D800 files to DNGs that can then be opened in older versions like CS5.
Be aware DNG only works on folders of files, not individual files. Select the FOLDER not a single file

  • Edited RAW files not saving as TIFF's or JPG's

I thought working with RAW files in iPhoto 08 worked the same as it did in 06. I have lots of Nikon RAW (NEF) files from my 06 library that used to change to a JPG as soon as I finished editing them in iPhoto 06 or a tiff if I had that option selected in preferences. The RAW badge would go away and I would then see a JPG in my library.
None of this happens in 08. I edit a RAW file, the changes look to be saved when I move to the next photo, but the RAW file remains with the RAW badge still showing. Can anyone tell me why this is happening?
    Thanks
    Joshua

I also noticed something else and it looks like this issue is not only with RAW but JPG files as well. It seems like iPhoto is not finalizing the edit and saving the file. Even after closing the program you can return to those edited photos in edit mode and they look as if they are still in the middle of being edited. The level sliders still show the highlighted movement you made to them and you can still hit the shift key and see the before and after. So it seems like it's holding the changes made to the file but not following through and finalizing the changes and saving the file.

  • IPhoto 08, Raw files wont save as Tiff

I have set my preferences to save Raw files as tiff's after editing, however it will only save as jpeg, anyone have any ideas whats causing the problem

Start with the basics: try each of these in turn:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • IPhoto converts RAW files to JPEG when exporting - why?

When I click and drag a RAW photo out of iPhoto it converts it to JPEG no matter where I send it. How do I keep it in its original RAW format so I can edit it in Photoshop? I have iPhoto 8.1.1.9(419) and OSS 10.6.2. The RAW photo file was captured using a Canon 7D.

Some more info for using Photoshop with iPhoto (applies primarily for editing jpgs and not RAW files)
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

  • After importing my JPEGs, the matching RAW-Files aren't found! Why?

I shot JPEG+RAW-Couples with my Canon EOS 450D (aka Rebel XSi) and imported the JPEGs into Aperture 3.1.3. When I wanted to import the matching RAW-Files later, Aperture didn't recognize one of them. I didn't change anything at the files. Importing both as a couple works without any problems.
What's the mistake? Can I fix it or is it a bug?
    Thanks in advance!

Users have reported problems with Aperture when Projects hold too many Images.  How many is "too many"?  No one knows -- I keep all projects under 1,000 Images, and even then very rarely go over 500.
Projects should be subsets of your Library.
Aperture was designed around the general topology of "one Project per shoot".  From the User Manual:
"Projects: The basic containers used in Aperture to organize images by shoot."
I have found that sticking to this topology seems to keep gremlins at bay.

  • Why won't Elements 12 open Canon camera RAW files ending in IMG?

I have a new camera, Canon SX50 which produces RAW images called IMG files. I tried to open one in Photoshop Elements 12 and it says it does not handle that file type. I have Windows 7 x64 operating system. I tried to find updates for Elements 12 and don't see any. (I thought I needed a Camera RAW update). What do I do?

I am not sure if it is relevant but literally 30 mins ago I saw my sytem said there were 2 updates for PSE and PE .
I accepted and saw it loading tons of stuff 45 MB or so all labelled Camera Raw or something like that - maybe that is a fix for your problems
NB I am totally inexperienced just mentioned it as you might check out if you are up to date, and if the latest update helps your issue.

  • Aperture 2 raw files end up iDisk jpg files

When I click and drag (as directed by the help directory) my photo files from Aperture to the picture folder in iDisk, it drags the small image file and not the Raw master file. Example: The master CR2 file for an image is 11.36 MB in the Aperture metadata, after the transfer the data size of the same image file is only 306 km and is listed as a .jpg file. That's the thumbnail size used to view the image in Aperture. I want to save the Raw CR2 master files in iDisk. I checked preferences to find an answer to this problem but no luck. These are master image files that are based in Aperture and have been tweaked with in both Aperture and/or PS CS4. What am I doing wrong. Thanks for any help.

The only way to get a master out of Aperture is to export it. Right click on on or more select images in Aperture and choose export master - this will give you the original files that were imported. Realize that there will be no adjustments - it will be exactly the same as it came out of the camera.

Ps. What exactly are you trying to do with iDisk and your CR2 files, as in for what purpose?

  • Why when I open my raw files into lightroom, colors are different from my camera's preview?

    Ciao,
I have a problem... maybe this can be a stupid question but anyway.. I would like to know the reason why when I open a raw image in lightroom, for a second I see the right colors/tone/contrast that i see when i look at the same images on my camera and soon after the word "Loading" I see the raw files with different colors.
    Why this happens???
    Before "Loading" and --> after
    Thank you so much

    Hey Giuseppe
I have a similar problem but the cause may be different from yours. I shoot a Canon 6D and as far as I know no one with the 5D MKIII has my issue, but maybe you could look into it.
Canon's Adobe Camera Raw in Photoshop CC, as well as Lightroom CC, is automatically down converting my CR2 RAW files from 14 bit color depth to 8 bit color depth. This is screwing up my colors, contrast, gradients, etc quite a bit when trying to process RAW files in Photoshop CC and Lightroom CC.
You can read my thread here:
Banding due to automatic downconverting of RAW files to 8 bit
You might want to check and see if your RAW files are actually being processed in 16 bit color depth. There is a possibility that they are being down converted automatically for some reason.
The bit depth in Lightroom for RAW files is supposed to be 16 bit but when opening my files it just converts it down.
Try downloading Canon's Digital Photo Professional 4
    Canon U.S.A. : Consumer & Home Office : EOS 5D Mark III
Use that software to process a RAW photo and convert to a 16 bit TIFF. I know this software truly gives you a 16 bit depth image. Then compare the result side to side with what you're seeing in Lightroom.
If you are having this issue, I have not yet found a way to process RAW CR2 files in ACR or Lightroom and maintain 16 bit depth.
If you are batch processing to JPEGs it probably doesn't matter, but my issue is that it is down converting BEFORE exporting and thus any edits I do become much more destructive on my 8 bit image than they would if I was editing a 16 bit image. I have to be able to keep things in 16 bit up until the point they go to the printer.
Sorry, this may not help you at all, it looks like there could just be a difference in White Balance, but I figured I'd throw my two cents out there and maybe you could see if this is actually what is happening for you, and hopefully eventually Adobe could potentially fix this bug.

  • D300 RAW files converted to TIFF Anomally

Ok....heres the thing! I recently spent 2 months in Argentina working on shootshorses.com. I used a Nikon D300 RAW (12mb) and downloaded everything (70 gig) to an 80 gig ipod. Aperture at this point could not read the nikon nef file so viewed them in nikon view nx, picked 50 or so I wanted, converted to 16 bit tiff on desktop and imported to Aperture. (now 77mb files)
When upgrade for aperture 2 came out, installed and attached ipod and imported all the work. Started working on some of the same images in the new projects in order to uplaod more to web site. wanted to lift and stamp changes from tiff files and apply to freshly imported raw duplicate files then delete much larger tiff files. Point...the identical stamped changes make a completely different image.
Checked the new raw file against the previous tiff file with no adjustments on either, on screen (apple 30 inch) and the tiff files blow the raw masters away for depth and sharpness. do not understand why as they are both the original Raw file from the ipod.....Question is, why is this? Suddenly the raw files really look digital and the tiff files have a depth that approach the work done on the kodak DCS pro.... and that is a bench mark!
If anyone has any explanations it would be great. Many thanks
    A perplexed David Sinclair.

AHHH... . amazed there is such a notable difference.... simple really. Only problem ,natural I suppose, Capture nx being same manufacturer, but makes me ask what else might be missed in the way of picture quality with Aperture. Many thanks for your answer

  • Can't update camera raw file in photoshop cs5

I have Adobe Photoshop CS5, version 12.0.4.  I am trying to open camera raw files ending in ARW (Hasselblad Stellar Camera) and PhotoShop tells me there are no updates available.  I have downloaded the mac os file (using Yosemite, latest version) and get the message the installation was successful, however, PhotoShop still shows that the Camera Raw Version is still 6.0.0.205.  I can view the ARW files in finder, however when I try to open the file in PhotoShop CS5 I get this message:
Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw.
Please visit the Camera Raw help documentation for additional information.

you can update ps cs5 to cr 6.7
update by downloading the files directly and then applying them:
    pre cc updates:  http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
i'm not sure which camera you have but the hassleblad stellar II needs cr 8.8 or better.
your options (if that's your camera) are to upgrade ps or to use the dng converter.

  • I can't load raw files from a Leica d-lux 6. Says it's an unsupported file. Help please!

I cannot load raw files from a Leica d-lux 6.  Aperture says it's an unsupported file.  How do I get it to be a supported file?  Help, please!

What is your Aperture version? Here is the list of supported raw formats for Aperture 3, see: Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support
Your camera is not on the list. Use the software that came with your camera to convert your raw files to dng or tiff images; then you can import the images into Aperture and work with them, while waiting for Apple to release raw support for your camera. Or shoot raw+jpeg pairs and use the jpeg while you are waiting.
Is Mac OS X (10.5.1) really your current operating system? Then you may need to upgrade, when Apple finally releases raw support for your camera. The newest raw support required Aperture 3.4. to be installed.
